❔

Funk, soul, jazz, and plenty more – all wrapped up into this 70s masterpiece from Rufus – the kind of record that not only never gets old, but which still has folks wondering how the group could have gotten things this perfect all these many years later! Chaka Khan and the group are in sublime formation here – tight, but never slick – sublimely soulful, but never in a way that sounds like they're trying to copy anyone else at all – always in this unique blend of all the best elements from all their favorit styles, fused into a fresh new sound that's completely Rufus-like all the way through! Titles include the incredible track "Stop On By", plus the instrumental "Rufusized", "I'm A Woman", "Somebody's Watching You", "Please Pardon Me (You Remind Me Of A Friend)", and "Right Is Right".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Rags To Rufus
ABC, 1974. Near Mint-
One of those records that everyone seemed to own, back in the day – and for good reason, too – as Rufus and Chaka have a way of opening ears of folks who dig so many different styles – from soul to rock to funk and jazz – but all with a groove that's totally their own! Keep On Pushing
ABC, 1964. Very Good
There's no need for The Impressions to push from behind – because with a record like this, they're very firmly in the driver's seat! ABC, Late 50s/Early 60s. Very Good
A collection of Lloyd's biggest hits during his early years – 15 tracks that have plenty of New Orleans influences, yet which also define that unique quality that made Price one of the stand-along singers of his time! Includes hits like "Stagger Lee", "Personality", " ... LP, Vinyl record album

Masqueraders

Love Anonymous
ABC, 1977. Sealed
One of the few full albums ever cut by The Masqueraders – a stellar vocal group who recorded some excellent singles in the 60s, and were fortunate enough to be pulled into the big time by Isaac Hayes for his Hot Buttered Soul imprint on ABC! The band mixes their smooth Memphis style with ... LP, Vinyl record album
ABC, 1976. Near Mint-
An obscure vocal group that we know little about – but who have a strong harmony sound that reminds us of the best of the second wave of east coast groups from the mid 70s. HB Barnum produced the album, but it's got more of Philly sound than Barnum's older Detroit soul – with a mix of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lee Dorsey

Night People
ABC, 1978. Sealed
A smoother set than usual for Lee Dorsey – recorded with frequent partner Allen Toussaint, but done in a sweeter, more modern soul style that's a refreshing change from earlier years! (C'mon, you didn't expect Lee to keep hitting the same old chunky grooves – did you?) The shift here ... LP, Vinyl record album
ABC, 1965. Very Good+
Far more than a regular greatest hits – this is a full-fledged album, and one that includes a number of cuts that were singles for the group, but which don't really show up on other albums. Angelo Bond

Bondage
ABC, 1975. Near Mint-
We've got to admit, we don't know much about Angelo Bond, but we've always had kind of a soft spot for this nice overlooked album of 70s soul tracks recorded for ABC. The arrangements are by McKinley Jackson and Paul Riser, and the tracks are a nice mix of 70s soul themes – with some ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Holman

I Love You
ABC, 1969. Very Good
Eddie's masterpiece LP of late sixties soul, with the classic "Hey There Lonely Girl", the title cut, and a lot of other great original compositions.
