✈
❔

Great Dizzy big band LP from the late 50's, with a stellar lineup that includes a young Lee Morgan on trumpet, Billy Mitchell on tenor, and the underrecorded Billy Root on baritone. The band swings hard, and the playing's great both in the ensemble moments and in the solos. Tracks include "DDT", "Whisper Not", and the very long "Dishwater", a nice uptempo workout, Dizzy style.  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Gold label pressing with deep groove, in a green cover which has some wear and a split top and bottom seam held with clear tape.)

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Jazz Recital
Verve, Mid 50s. Very Good
A rare Dizzy Gillespie set for Verve – with vocals by Toni Harper, Herb Lance, and Dizzy himself! LP, Vinyl record album
GWP, 1970. Near Mint-
A fantastic bit of late 60's funk, and a surprisingly slammin' record from Dizzy! The album's got tight, hard, choppy funk arrangements from Ed Bland – who went onto to do some great work at the Perception label – and the group features James Moody blowing hard lean funky solos right ... Verve, 1960. Near Mint-
One of the strongest sides to feature Diz's mid 50s format – a larger group than usual, an octet, with a more tightly arranged style that showed that he continued to develop as an artist long after the days of his early bop sides. The album's also noteworthy for demonstrating Dizzy's great ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1961. Near Mint-
While actually not as electrifying as some of Dizzy's other albums from the time, this one's still pretty darn great, and features his great group with Leo Wright on alto and Lalo Schfrin on piano. The band grooves with a subtly Latinish vibe, and the tracks are nice and long long long. Titles ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dizzy Gillespie

Have Trumpet Will Excite
Verve, 1959. Very Good
Diz breaks past his bop playing, takes a bit of a turn towards swing-based material, and also hits this nice rolling groove that gives a bit of a peek at the way he'd sound in the 60's, when he had Lalo Schifrin on piano, and more of a Latin sound. He's backed here by Junior Mance on piano, Les ... LP, Vinyl record album

A great little record – way more than just a simple jazz version of a soundtrack! True, the Wiggins trio is working here with material from Victor Young's score to Around The World In 80 Days – but Gerald really opens all the tracks up on the piano, so much so that we can hardly ... Inflated Tear

A landmark album from Roland Kirk – one of his key 60s sides for Atlantic records, and an amazing blend of soul jazz, hardbop, and freer thinking styles! A monster – and quite possibly one of the greatest Fender Rhodes albums of all time! Why Not?
ESP, 1968. Near Mint-
Brilliant early work by Marion Brown – both soulful and adventurous, less "out" than some of the other ESP albums from the time – and more in the post-Coltrane spirit of work by Pharoah Sanders and some of the Strata East crowd. The group on the album is a quartet – ... LP, Vinyl record album
