VariousRip It Up – The Best Of Specialty Records ... LP
Specialty/Craft, Late 50s. New Copy ... $21.99 22.99
A hard-hitting collection of gems from the legendary Specialty Records – that west coast powerhouse of R&B that helped take the music into the rock and roll generation too! Specialty was key at opening the door for new sounds in the 50s – and although a relatively small imprint, the company gave the world some key crossover cuts in the pre-soul years, both from LA and New Orleans – a good number of which you'll hear on this set! The package features new liner notes from Billy Vera – who wrote a book on the label with the same title – and tracks include "Ain't It A Shame" and "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" by Lloyd Price, "RM Blues" and "Information Blues" by Roy Milton, "Rip It Up" and "Long Tall Sally" by Little Richard, "I'll Come Running Back To You" by Sam Cooke, "Please Send Me Someone To Love" and "Lost Love" by Percy Mayfield, "Bony Moronie" and "Short Fat Fannie" by Larry Williams, "Dream Girl" by Jesse & Marvin, "Pink Champagne" by Joe Liggins, and "Drunk" by Jimmy Liggins. Percy MayfieldBest Of Percy Mayfield ... LP
Specialty, 1950s. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A nice collection of Percy's classic work for Specialty Records from the 50s – issued here in a full LP package from 1970, when Percy was enjoying a bit of a revival. The work's a strong batch of tunes with a sophisticated smooth and bluesy feel – clearly a strong percursor to soul work in the 60s, as can be heard on tracks like "Please Send Me Someone To Love", "Lost Mind", "Memory Pain", "What A Fool I Was", "Lost Love", and "The River's Invitation". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a piece of clear tape near the top of the spine.)

✨✧ Sam Cooke with the Soul StirrersGospel Soul Of Sam Cooke With The Soul Stirrers Vol 1 ... LP
Specialty, Late 50s. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
It's a well-known fact that before Sam Cooke went into soul music, he was cutting some incredible work with the Soul Stirrers gospel quintet – work that was every bit as soulful and sexy as his pop hits, perhaps more so, given the supposedly restrained nature of the setting. This album brings together some very nice numbers from Sam's days with the group! LP, Vinyl record album
(Black and gold label pressing. Side 2 has a light click on all tracks.)

✨✧ Staples Singers, Rev Robinson, Pilgrim TravelersGospel Christmas Card (Jazz Heritage pressing) ... CD
Specialty/Jazz Heritage, 1953/1962/1963. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Quite a hip Christmas Card – one that features vintage work by three different gospel acts, all brought together in one CD! The bulk of the album features the excellent Staple Singers record 25th Day Of December – a rare Holiday outing from 1962, recorded back in the group's earliest, rootsiest days! The sound here is quite spare – no surprise, given that the session was done by Riverside Records, at a time when the label was pushing the gospel-influenced quartet onto folk audiences of the 60s – but it's also that spare quality that gives the record a timeless feel that holds up nicely. Instrumentation is just a bit of guitar from Roebuck Staples and organ from Maceo Woods, plus some drums – and titles include "The Last Month Of The Year", "Holy Unto The Lord", "The Savior Is Born", "Sweet Little Jesus Boy", "There Was A Star", "Silent Night", "O Little Town Of Bethlehem", and "No Room At The Inn". Next are three tracks by Rev Cleophus Robinson – "White Christmas", "Sweet Little Jesus Boy", and "Silent Night" – followed by two more by The Pilgrim Travelers, "I'll Be Home For Christmas" and "Silent Night". CD

ManhattansGreatest Hits ... LP
Columbia, 1980. Very Good- ... $3.99
The Manhattans were one of those groups who knocked around for years in the indie soul world – cutting some fantastic material early on, but then losing direction for a number of years until they sprung forth as a huge act for Columbia during the early 70s. By that time, the band had more than polished their harmonies – coming up with an incredible style that was sweet and smooth, yet still undeniably soulful and human, especially on the ballads that were their specialty. Titles on this set include "Kiss & Say Goodbye", "Hurt", "There's No Me Without You", "It Feels So Good To Be Loved So Bad", "We Never Danced To A Love Song", and "Do You Really Mean Goodbye". LP, Vinyl record album
(Unofficial Korean pressing on Life in a red tinted cover. Vinyl is pressed slightly off center.)

✨✧ Marcos Valle & AzymuthBrazil By Music – Fly Cruzeiro (180 gram clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Cruzeiro/Tidal Waves, Mid 70s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $28.99
A really unique little album – one that features sounds created in collaboration between Marcos Valle and Azymuth – all done as a specialty album for an airline in Brazil! The sound is breezy and dreamy – different than some of Azymuth's earliest music, but not that far off – and inflected with the warmer touches that Valle used on his records as the 70s moved in – that almost-soundtrack style of sophistication, but still lean enough to groove! The music is rich in keyboards from Jose Roberto Bertrami – and the whole thing's got a breezy vibe that would have been perfect kicking back in a leather seat in first class, looking down at the beaches of Rio below! Titles include the "Jingle Cruzeiro" – plus versions of "Asa Branca", "Samba De Verao", "Nao Tem Solucao/Marina/Rosas", "Ate Pensei", "Pais Do Futebol", "Zazueira/Mas Que Nada", and "Wave". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousEccentric Soul – Sitting In The Park (with bonus download) ... LP
Numero, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful tribute to a legendary Chicago soul historian – the late Bob Abrahamian, well-remembered as a completely devoted soul music collector, DJ, and one-man archive who spent the late years of his life trying to uncover lost corners of the Windy City soul scene of the 60s and 70s! Bob's specialty was Chicago groups, and this set is overflowing with rare harmony soul that most of us would never have heard otherwise – the kind of obscure cuts that Abrahamian played on his famous radio show on WHPK (also the alma mater of Dusty Groove, too) – and presented beautifully here by the folks at Numero, on one of the best collections they've given us in years! The notes not only present Bob's story, but also feature bits of interviews he did with obscure Chicago soul artists, alongside photos and other notes too – to support a stunning selection of harmony soul cuts that include "How Could You Love Him" by Shades Of Brown, "Hard To Know" by Oneness, "A Fool Like Me" by Enchanters, "Reach For The Truth" by Puzzle People, "The Girl In The Window" by The Mist, "Second Story Man" by Chocolate Sunday, "Let Love Come In" by Cliff Curry, "Southside Chicago" by Otis Brown & The Delights, "Moaning & Crying" by The Dontells, "So I Can Make This Change" by Krash Band, and "It Ain't Fair (part 1)" by Ahead Of Our Time. LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes bonus download!)
