✨✧ Spanky WilsonWestbound Years (Specialty Of The House plus unreleased tracks) ... CD
Westbound (UK), 1974/1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful collection of work by funky soul diva Spanky Wilson – a set that features her full Westbound album Specialty Of The House, plus a nice array of even harder-hitting singles! Spanky first rose to fame as a gritty singer mixing jazz and soul on a series of late 60s/early 70s sides with HB Barnum, but during her Westbound years she cleaned things up a bit – taking her already-rich vocals, and turning them towards fuller backings and more soaring soul that almost hit the heights of soul singers like Marlena Shaw or Motown artists of the time. Backings penned by David Van DePitte, Paul Riser, and others gave Wilson a nicely mature sound that was a good change from her aging style of previous years – but other singles still maintained a grittier, funkier groove too – allowing for a nice range of modes during these short years at Westbound Records. This CD's the first to give full due to these overlooked years in Spanky's career – and it breaks up the core album and intersperses some of the funkier singles, plus unreleased tracks – in a blend that sounds even better than the original records! 18 tracks in all – including the break classic "Kissing My Love", plus "Shake Your Head", "Non Stop Flight", "He Called Me Baby", "Easy Lover", "Spend The Night With Me", "Missing Pieces", "I Think I'm Gonna Cry", "Standing Room Only", "Love Song", "The Downer I Get", and "I'll Stake My Life On You Boy". ✨✧ Little RichardFabulous Little Richard ... LP
Specialty, 1959. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Little Richard doing his much imitated, never bettered thing on the Fabulous Little Richard LP – released near the end of the 50s and featuring emotive r&b numbers he cut in earlier sessions – not all as wild-eyed and fiery as some of his 50s recordings but a soulful thrill! The album does feature a few of the more blazing classics, but all in all, this one demonstrates Richard's versatility more than some of his 50s work. Fabulous tracks from true legend! Includes "Shake A Hand", "Chicken Little Baby", "All Night Long", "Lonesome & Blue", "Kansas City", Maybe I'm Right", "I'm Just A Lonely", "Whole Lotta Shaking Going On", "I'm Just A Lonly Guy" and more. ✨✧ Guitar SlimSufferin Mind ... CD
Specialty, Early/Mid 50s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Beautiful blues from Guitar Slim – west coast material from the mid-50s, recorded with some very hip backings! Slim's got a lean, mean edge – a style that's a bit similar to Johnny Watson in his early years, touched with some of the class of the R&B scene that was bubbling up in the late 40s in LA! The added instrumentation really makes the tracks great – not just the usual blues, but a more sophisticated mode with some nicely jazzy undercurrents. The set's very well put-together too – 26 tracks in all, with titles that include "Going Down Slow", "The Things That I Used To Do", "Well I Done Got Over It", "Twenty Five Lies", "Stand By Me", "Sufferin Mind", "You're Gonna Miss Me", "I Got Sumpin For You", "Story Of My Life", and "Our Only Child". Specialty, Early 50s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rootsy blues from the 78rpm years – a collection of well-recorded Specialty Records material by Frankie Lee Sims – an artist who was born in New Orleans, but was also a Texas-raised cousin of Lightnin Hopkins too! Sims' music here has lots of the styles we love in Hopkins' work of the time – kind of an evolution of blues past the delta years, but not too far either – mostly acoustic instrumentation, including bold lines by Sims that accompany his lyrics – and a stark sense of recording that really lets the simple elements come through. Titles include "Married Woman", "Lucy Mae Blues", "Don't Take It Out On Me", "I'm So Glad", "Jelly Roll Baker", and "Wine & Gin Bounce". LP, Vinyl record album

Specialty, 1971. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
2 excellent funky instrumentals – both of Chicano origin, if we figure right from the title! "Cholo" is a slow funky tune with searing sax and organ over the top – conga beats sneaking in from time to time, but most of the groove laid down by bass. There's a bit of mad Spanish rapping from time to time – and the track has a nice mod groove! "Poquito" has stronger congas and more chants – with a very catchy groove, and a voice that goes "heeeey Chicano!" 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Al Grey, Lee Morgan, Billy Mitchell, & OthersDizzy Atmosphere ... CD
Specialty/OJC, 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really classic session – one that features an all-star lineup of players who were in the Dizzy Gillespie band of the mid 50s – stepping out here in a smaller group on their own for a one-off date on the Specialty Records label! Specialty normally recorded R&B at the time, but they knock it out of the park with this one – really letting the players stretch out with lots of soulful energy – in a lineup that includes the young Lee Morgan on trumpet, Al Grey on trombone, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul West on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums – plus the fantastic Billy Root on baritone – a really great player who only recorded a bit back in the day! Arrangements are nice and hip – done by Benny Golson and Roger Spotts – and titles include "About Time", "DDT", "Whisper Not", and the very long "Dishwater" – a nice uptempo workout, Dizzy style! CD

✨✧ Elmo HopeFinal Sessions Vol 2 (Japanese pressing) ... LP
Specialty (Japan), 1966. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The last work ever recorded by pianist Elmo Hope – one of the most brilliant modernist talents of his generation, right up there with Monk and Herbie Nichols for sheer inventiveness. We've always loved the long sinuous lines he spun on piano, though Hope spent most of his career in obscurity, despite extremely strong critical response to his work – and he died at the age of 45 from pneumonia. The material here was recorded in 1966 for the Festival label – and feature Hope working with a trio that includes John Orr on bass and Clifford Jarvis on drums, with some occasional guest work on drums by Philly Joe Jones. Titles include two takes of ""Elmo's Blues", "A Kiss For My Love", "Stellations", "Night In Tunisia", and "I Love You". LP, Vinyl record album

A nice collection of Percy's classic work for Specialty Records from the 50s – issued here in a full LP package from 1970, when Percy was enjoying a bit of a revival. The work's a strong batch of tunes with a sophisticated smooth and bluesy feel – clearly a strong percursor to soul work in the 60s, as can be heard on tracks like "Please Send Me Someone To Love", "Lost Mind", "Memory Pain", "What A Fool I Was", "Lost Love", and "The River's Invitation". ✨✧ Frank RosolinoFree For All (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Specialty/OJC, 1958. Used ... Out Of Stock
Not the all-out chaos you might expect from the title, but a hell of a great 50s session from trombonist Frank Rosolino – produced by a young David Axelrod, and possibly one of Frank's greatest albums of the time! The group's got a bit more bite and a lot more soul than some of Rosolino's other combos – thanks in part to smoking tenor from Harold Land, who's at the height of his young powers here – and from tight rhythms by Victor Feldman on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Stan Levey on drums! But Axelrod's clearly part of the sound here, too – as the bass feels way more up in the mix than usual for a date of this vintage – making for a pulse that gets things moving, even when mellow – a real delight to our ears so many years later. Titles include "Chrisdee", "Love For Sale", "Twilight", "Free For All", and "Sneakyoso". CD features 3 bonus alternate takes, too! CD

✨✧ Gerald WigginsAround The World In 80 Days ... CD
Specialty/OJC, Late 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great little record – way more than just a simple jazz version of a soundtrack! True, the Wiggins trio is working here with material from Victor Young's score to Around The World In 80 Days – but Gerald really opens all the tracks up on the piano, so much so that we can hardly recognize most numbers – thanks to the Wiggins touch on the keys, and to some fiery work on rhythm by drummer Bill Douglass and bassist Eugene Wright. Possibly David Axelrod's production helped in hitting the sound of the set (the session was one of his first!) – but whatever the case, the album's a great one, and features the tunes "La Coquette", "Around The World Beguine", "Aouda", "Passepartout", and "Way Out West". A key collection of work by Larry Williams – the 50's R&B artist who's too-often written off as a rocker, but who actually went onto have a key influence in the early years of soul! Like Johnny Guitar Watson, another contemporary with whom Larry sometimes recorded, Williams had a style that took the bluesy sounds of the 50s, and brought them into a slower, deeper groove – often with an approach that had a lot of deep soul overtones. Inner City/BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $22.99 27.99
An overdue look at the great range of sounds that came from Inner City Records at the end of the 70s – a hip American indie with a strong specialty in soulful fusion, hip vocalists, and a range of other great styles too – all brought together here by London DJ Kev Beadle! Inner City's often a bit overlooked – as the label flourished most strongly in the years after some of the better-known soulful imprints of the 70s – and the label always had a great ear for new sounds, fresh ideas, and the kind of compelling global elements that often led them to license key tracks from overseas, and bring them to the US market. This collection's heavy on singers – the kind of cool, underground jazz vocalists that Inner City captured so well – and it's also got a nice mix of funky fusion, modal numbers, and spiritual currents – on titles that include "The Other World" by Judy Roberts, "Hunt Up Wind" by Hiroshi Fukumura, "Vera Cruz" by Helen Merrill, "Lucky Southern" by Tom Lellis, "Quickie Nirvana" by Kellis Ethridge, "Samba De La Cruz" by Terumasa Hino, "So High" by Janet Lawson, "The Samba" by Jeff Lorber, "Return Of The Prodigal Son" by Joe Lee Wilson, "Shenkansen" by Urszula Dudziak, "To An Elfin Princess" by Charlie Mariano, "Pandora" by Carlos Franzetti, and "Jennine" by Eddie Jefferson. Roy Milton definitely rocks, even though he wasn't a rocker at all – and instead was one of the key artists in postwar R&B who helped really chart the course for other decades of musicians to follow! As you'll see from the image on the cover, Roy's a drummer, but his real strength is leading a tight small combo – effortlessly blending together influences from jazz and blues in the years before soul, and really setting loose with both searing instrumental solos and great lead vocals – including work from Camille Howard, who also plays piano in his combo! The package features a whopping 31 tracks in all – with material from both his Specialty and Dootone years, on titles that include "One Zippy Zam", "Train Blues", "It's Later Than You Think", "Succotash", "Wakin Up Baby", "Big Fat Mama", "Red Light", "Hop Skip & Jump", "Junior Jumps", "Train Blues", "Bam A Lam", and "Baby I'm Gone". Z Records (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic entry in this long running series – a batch of compilations that normally focuses on rare disco grooves, but which also features a fair bit of funky soul nuggets this time around! The groove is still mostly uptempo, but with all these wonderfully weird, wild funky elements in the mix too – not gimmicky tracks, but the kind of unusually-crafted cuts that are quite far from the mainstream – and which show that there were often some really amazing things happening in the farther reaches of the soul music underground at the end of the 70s! Plus, most of these cuts are impossibly rare – so much so that many are reaching our ears for the first time, via this excellent compilation – in a list of tracks that includes "Specialty Item" by MVP Cloudburst, "Give Me Love" by EKG, "Disco 2000" by Pleze, "Flashback" by Jeff Burns, "Dance Your Blues (part 2)" by Spellboun, "Forget Yourself" by Body Heat, "Say Raise Your Hand & Say McNasty" by McNasty, "Reflex" by Reflections, "Reaching For Our Star" by Sharon Revoal, "Space Ghost (parts 1 & 2)" by Jackson Lee, "Spend Some Time With Me" by Rideout, "Move On" by Frederick, "I'm Into Your Love" by Executive Jam, "Seeking" by Cash Money, "Give It Up" by Horizon, and "Twilight" by Firewater.
