One of the more legendary albums on Blue Note from the label's classic run – and for many folks, the quintessential album from guitarist Kenny Burrell! Burrell had been playing for a number of years, and had been already recorded by Blue Note on some other excellent records – yet here, there's really something different going on – a bit more of a groove, and a harder edge from Kenny's guitar – augmented with superb work from a group that features Stanley Turrentine on tenor, Major Holly on bass, Bill English on drums, and the great Ray Barretto on congas! The vibe is fantastic, and Turrentine's horn has a raspy edge that's beautiful – while the whole record moves with a very rhythmic groove – thanks to Ray's extra percussion contribution on the bottom! Titles include the classic groover "Chittlins Con Carne", an early jazz dance classic – plus "Soul Lament", "Wavy Gravy", and "Mule".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(200 gram pressing, on Classic Records!)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Tender Gender
Cadet, 1966. Near Mint-
Straight, strong, and soulful sounds from guitarist Kenny Burrell – quite possibly one of his best albums of the 60s, thanks to a really well-focused sound throughout! Kenny Burrell

Ode To 52nd Street
Cadet, 1967. Near Mint-
A really wonderful Chess/Cadet session from the 60s – not the bop-styled record you might expect from the 52nd Street reference in the title! Instead, the whole thing's more of a cool Chicago take on soul jazz – with these great large arrangements from Richard Evans, backing strong ... LP, Vinyl record album

Donald Byrd

Free Form
Blue Note, 1966. Near Mint-
A landmark album for Donald Byrd – one that marks a key departure in his sound! Donald's really opening up on this one – picking up more of the soulful and the spiritual side of jazz, and moving from the hardbop and modern jazz of his late 50s years – no surprise, since he's ... Jackie McLean

Tippin' The Scales
Blue Note, 1962/1984. Near Mint-
A wonderful quartet session from the young alto genius Jackie McLean – recorded for Blue Note in the 60s, but not issued until many years later! That issue doesn't stop the set from being a classic killer, though – as the group features the stunning Sonny Clark on piano, still very ... LP, Vinyl record album

Donald Byrd

Byrd In Hand
Blue Note, 1959. Very Good+
One of the best of Donald Byrd's early Blue Note albums – a sparkling set of hardbop tunes with a really souful edge! John Coltrane

Blue Train
Blue Note, 1957. Very Good
John Coltrane's classic – and only – recording as a leader for Blue Note! The album's no throwaway date, though – as it stands strongly with both Coltrane's other label work of the time, and with the best of the late 50s Blue Note scene – a time when the label was really ... LP, Vinyl record album

Three Sounds

Good Deal
Blue Note, 1959. Very Good
Good deal indeed – always soulful sounds from Gene Harris and his early incarnation of The Three Sounds – served up with a tightness that few other trios could match at the time! Harris is very strongly in the lead on the keys – hitting hard enough on the left hand that he hardly ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stanley Turrentine

Joyride
Blue Note, 1965. Near Mint-
A very successful album for Blue Note – and one that took the searing tenor sax of Stanley Turrentine and backed it with some boldly soulful arrangements from Oliver Nelson! Blue Note, 1960. Sealed
A landmark album – not only for Freddie Redd, but for Jackie McLean, who's the real star of the session!
