King Pleasure Sings/Annie Ross Sings

LP (Item 11085) Prestige, Early 1950s — Condition: Very Good
A record that revolutionized the concept of jazz vocals in the 50s – thanks to famous performances by Annie Ross and King Pleasure! The tracks on the LP include Ross' early interpretations of Wardell Gray's classics "Twisted" and "Farmer's Market", and the King Pleasure set includes classics like "Red Top", "This Is Always", "Sometimes I'm Happy", and his great duet with Jon Hendricks, "Don't Get Scared". A landmark LP of jazz vocal sides, and one that no fan of vocalese should be without.  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(OJC pressing.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

King Pleasure

Original Moody's Mood
Prestige, 1952/1953/1954. Very Good
An important set that documents all of King's early vocalese jazz sides – pivotal vocal jazz recordings that were not only enormously popular with listeners around the country, but which also did a heck of a lot in the way of advancing the way that male singers handled lead vocals on jazz-base ... Mose Allison

Ramblin' With Mose
Prestige, 1958. Very Good
A pivotal album for Mose Allison – and one of the first records to ever feature his voice, even if only on one track! During the 50s, Allison was mostly known for his work as a bop-styled pianist – on records by Stan Getz and others – but at the end of the decade, he really ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, 1958. Sealed
In our opinion, this "comeback" material by Rushing was way better than his original work from the late 30s. He's got more of a sense of control here, and his approach to the material is extremely thoughtful, and always tinged with a good sense of jazz, making it swing a bit more than on ... Gloria Lynne

Gloria Lynne Calendar
Hi Fi/Everest, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
There's a pretty loose theme to this one – because although the album's supposed to have a "calender" concept, one in which Gloria runs through tunes for every month of the year, the adherence to this mode is a bit loose, and the choice of songs hardly reflects the months. Still, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jackie & Roy

Bogie
Fantasy, 1986. Sealed
We love this record – a larger concept album from Jackie & Roy – almost their Ishtar moment! It's late in the career of Jackie & Roy, but the pair haven't faltered a bit. Bogie is a surprisingly great live set from 1986 – a dozen songs dedicated to Humphrey Bogart, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Michael Franks

Tiger In The Rain
Warner, 1979. Very Good
Another slice of late 70s genius from the amazing Michael Franks – one of the few mainstream artists who was able to hold onto his own voice and course amidst the overwhelming force of the music industry! There's a beautifully mellow feel to the record – jazzy, warm, personal, and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Roost, 1955. Very Good
One of the best-remembered jazz albums from singer Beverly Kenney – partly for the record's great use of guitar by Johnny Smith, but also for the great vocals from Bev herself! The album's one of a few that really set a new standard for small combo jazz in the 50s – different than the ... LP, Vinyl record album
