✨✧ Hailu Mergia & The WaliasTezeta ... LP
Awesome Tapes From Africa, 1975. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Maybe the greatest record we've ever heard from Ethio keyboard legend Hailu Mergia – a sweet set of jazz recorded in the mid 70s, with a vibe that still sounds fantastic after all these years! The groove here is the sort that so many other contemporary groups have been picking up on recent recordings – unusual slow-stepping rhythms, mixed with exotic keyboard lines that often run up and down the scale – sometimes feeling more like some sort of cosmic current than the work of a set of fingers on the keys – even when the group move into some more soul-based modes! The whole thing is wonderful – just the right touches from horns and guitar – and titles include "Gumegum", "Ou OU Ta", "Aya Belew Belew", "Tezeta", "Endegena", and "Zengadyw Derekou". Mahmoud AhmedEre Mela Mela (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Buda/L'Arome/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 29.99
Grooves unlike anything else you've ever heard in your life – an assortment of mid 70s tunes from Mahmoud Ahmed, the second grooviest Ethiopian artist, next to Mulatu! Ahmed's sound is a lot more out there than Mulatu's – less funky and jazz-based, and more in the mode of snakey rhythms, complicated guitar parts, and vocals that have a melancholy quality that's simply amazing. This set features tunes that recently appeared on volume 7 of the Ethiopiques CD series – but which are presented here in the format of the original 1975 LP! Titles include "Ere Mela Mela", "Ohoho Gedama", "Tezeta", "Abbay Mado", "Atawurulegn Lela", and "Endenesh Gedawo". LP, Vinyl record album

Mulatu & OthersEthiopian Modern Instrumentals Hits ... LP
Amha (Ethiopia), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. Near Mint- ... $39.99
Mad grooves from the Ethiopian scene of the 70s – featuring work by the enigmatic Mulatu, plus some of the other extra-cool artists on that country's groundbreaking soul and funk scene! Mulatu plays Fender Rhodes and organ on his tracks – grooving with a slow, snakey approach that's almost a bit like the work of Sun Ra, but which also has distinct African touches. The sound here is quite different than the Nigerian funky work of the 70s – much more laidback and open-ended, with less American influences, and a really unique approach! Titles include "Yekermo Se", "Yegele Tezeta", "Munaye", "Metche Dershe", "Kasalefkut Hulu", and "Tezeta" by Mulatu Astatque; "Heywete" and "Bemgnot Alnorem" by Bahta Gebre Heywet; and "Yetesfa Tezeta" by Tesfa-Maryam Kidane. Vinyl release of tracks pulled from the Ethiopiques CD-only series, done with some good notes. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lafayette Afro Rock BandSoul Makossa (blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Musidisc/Strut (UK), Mid 1970s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Amazing Afro Funk from one of the greatest groups of the genre – The Lafayette Afro Rock Band, a funky ensemble recording in Paris in the early 70s! The group were working in a hotbed of cross-cultural styles – and brought American funk rhythms firmly into play with African influences – creating grooves that were even heavier and harder than the work at the time by Fela Kuti, and which have stood for years as some of our favorite funk records! This album's one of their best – named after the title cut, their great take on Manu Dibango's "Soul Makossa" (done here even funkier than the original!), and featuring other great tracks, like "Voodounon", "Azeta", and "Hihache" – all of them filled with heavy bass, tight drums, and fuzzy guitar – plus the cuts "Nicky" and "Oglenon". ✨✧ Ayalew MesfinGood Aderegechegn ... LP
Now Again, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The first-ever full length global collection of material by one of the funkiest cats working the Ethiopian scene in the early 70s – an artist who works here in a mode that's even more hard-hitting and funk based than contemporaries like Mulatu or Mahmoud Ahmed! The band on most tracks is the Black Lion Band, who've clearly learned the best modes of the James Brown Band of the late 60s – with riffing guitars and horn blasts that are right on the rhythms – moving, grooving, doing it to the max – while Ayalew Mesfin sings in these wonderfully-inflected vocals that are pure Ethio soul all the way through, and also provides some great lines on organs and keyboards! The set brings together cuts from a host of rare funky 45s – most lost to the sands of time after Ayalew had to go underground after the Ethiopian governmental change in 1974. Titles include "Hasabe", "Wubeet", "Yewefe Ber Abeba", "Sak Sak Beyelegni", "Gubeleye", "Endet Liyesh", "Tezetash Rekik", and "Ewedish Neber". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousEthiopiques Vol 4 – Ethio Jazz & Musique Instrumentale 1969-1974 ... CD
Buda (France), Late 60s-Mid 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the best volumes in this series – especially because it includes a number of tracks by the legendary Mulatu of Ethiopia! The overall feel is much more jazzy than the others, and there's even a few tracks that have a nice funky sound. 14 cuts in all – including "Yekermo Sew", "Kasalefkut Hulu", "Munaye", "Netsanet", "Dewel", "Tezetaye Antchi Lidj", and "Metche Dershe" – all by Mulatu! ✨✧ VariousEthiopiques Volume 19 – Mahmoud Ahmed: Alemye ... CD
Buda (France), 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
Mindblowing work from Mahmoud Ahmed – one of the key figures of Ethiopian music in the 70s, and a singer with a voice that's beyond compare! The sound here is extremely hard to describe – at one level grooving with some of the funk and jazz undercurrents of the work of Mulatu, but at another level done with a deeper sense of modernism that makes the tunes come across even more starkly. The album predates Ahmed's seminal Ere Mela Mela album – and on some tracks, is harder and funkier –with rhythms that pulsate in a really hypnotic way! Instrumentation includes some great hazy keyboards, as well as a brace of horns that emphasizes the themes of the tunes – and titles include "Gubelye", "Alemye", "Wogenie", "Etugula", "Belaya Belaya", "Ney Denun Tesesh", and the amazing Tezeta". ✨✧ VariousEthiopiques Volume 20 – Either/Orchestra Live In Addis ... CD
Buda (France), 2005. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
An amazingly great set from Either/Orchestra – easily their finest album ever, and a wicked batch of Ethiopian funk! The set's a very faithful homage to the best Ethiopian styles of the 70s – with lots of echoes of the generation of Mulatu, who also makes a guest appearance himself on the album! Bits of Afro Funk come into play with more complicated jazz – making for a really unique approach to the music that stays faithful to its roots, but also somehow extrapolates the best elements and pulls them even more strongly forward. Features percussion by Mulatu, tenor sax by Getachew Mekurya, and vocals by Bahta Gebre-Heywet, Michael Belayneh, and Tsendia Gebre-Marqos. 2CD set includes the tracks "Soul Tezeta", "Amlak Abet Abet", "Muziqawi Silt", "Yezemed Yebada", "Eyeye", "Embi Ba", "Shellela", "Bati", "Feger Aydelem Wey", and "Keset Eswa Betcha". Almost a tribute to the sound of the Ethiopiques series – played with some of its key stars from older years! CD

✨✧ VariousEthiopiques Volume 29 – Mastawesha – Kassa Tessema ... CD
Buda (France), 1972/1976. Used ... Out Of Stock
Really hypnotic sounds from Ethiopian singer Kassa Tessema – heard here on two records from the 70s, both of which have a very ancient feel! Kassa has this very deep sound in his voice – a range that really goes down right to the bottom, with less of the higher tones of other Ethiopian instrumentation or singers – and the backings for the records are very spare, often just a bit of krar or harp – used in simple melodic patterns, but which get very compelling as they cycle through in repetition. Some tracks are instrumental, and the booklet also offers translations of the most compelling lyrical passages – on titles that include "Woubye", "Tezeta", "Fanno", "Gelel", "Yemuziqa Moges","Satenaw", and "Antchi Hoy Lene".
