Young-Holt UnlimitedSoulful Strut ... CD
Brunswick/Solid (Japan), Late 60s. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99
A funky soul instrumental classic – all the way through! The team of Eldee Young and Redd Holt first came to prominence with Ramsey Lewis' first Chicago trio, then branched out on their own as a jazz act – but by the time of this set, they'd picked up a hipper, funkier late 60s sort of soul groove – and were working with larger backings and a nice deal of extra bass! The pianist in the group is the super-dope Ken Chaney – a player who uses space as much as he uses notes – providing a cool counterpoint to the funky and jazzy riffing of the Young/Holt bass/drum combo. The album includes the landmark track "Soulful Strut" – with tinkling piano over funky backings mixed with sweetened strings – and other tracks include "Funky Is As Funky Does", "Baby Your Light Is Out", "Who's Making Love", "Ain't There Something Money Can't Buy?", "Be By My Side", and "Please Sunrise". A high point in the Chicago soul scene – with backings by Willie Henderson! CD

Young-Holt UnlimitedYoung-Holt Unlimited Plays Super Fly ... LP
Paula, 1973. Near Mint- ... $13.99
The last-ever album from this legendary duo – and a set that's maybe their funkiest record too! Of course, that's probably no surprise, given that they're playing the Curtis Mayfield tunes from Superfly here – great tracks that make for a really wonderful setting for the pair's highly rhythmic style – Eldee Young on bass and Isaac Redd Holt on drums – plus great Fender Rhodes lines from pianist Ken Chaney! The set also features a bit of congas from Derf Reklaw, and organ and guitar as well – and the whole thing's a long overdue follow up to the funky electric jazz style of their earlier album Oh Girl, on Atlantic. Titles include great takes on "Freddie's Dead", "Give Me Your Love", "Pusher Man", and "Superfly" – plus a few of the group's own numbers, like "Hey Pancho" and "Mystical Man" – as well as a super-dope cover of "People Make the World Go Round". A lesser-known groover by Young-Holt – but a great one! "Doin The Thing" begins with this incredible bass part from Eldee Young – rolling, pounding, and echoing with a soulful beat that gets you going long before the drums even kick in! "The Beat" is a cover of Sonny Bono's big hit – done with some complicated piano riffing over funky grooves! 7-inch, Vinyl record

One of their wildest and most beautiful LPs! By this point, Young & Holt getting past their usual funky Brunswick sound here, and they've opened up the groove a lot with lots of nice extra bits. The best proof of this is their fantastic take on "Midnight Cowboy", which has an insane breakdown, funky piano, and this cool trumpet line playing counterpoint to the piano. Also includes a bunch of great tracks by piano player Ken Chaney, like "The Creeper" and "Trippin". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Young-Holt UnlimitedBorn Again/Mellow Dreamin' ... CD
Water/Atlantic, 1970/1971. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Brilliant later work from the Young Holt Unlimited combo – 2 albums that really stand apart from the rest of their recordings! Born Again is a sophisticated batch of jazzy tracks that really opens the group's style up – going way way past the stock soul of some of their Brunswick recordings. The band's clearly taken on a more spiritual bent for this one – as you can probably guess from the Afro-madonna cover – and the music ranges from electric funk to trippier more spiritual numbers. The record features hip keyboards by Ken Chaney, Marylean Holt, and a young Bobby Lyle. Cash McCall plays guitar on a great reading of Richard Evans "Hot Pants" – and other tracks include "Luv Bugg", "Wah Wah Man", and "Save The Day". Mellow Dreamin is one of the group's wildest and most beautiful LPs – really pushing the sound to a freer-thinking style of soul with a myriad of interesting rhythms, strange instrumentation, and uncanny arrangements! The best proof of this is their fantastic take on "Midnight Cowboy" from the set – done with an insane breakdown, funky piano, and this cool trumpet line playing counterpoint to the piano as the track goes on! The whole set's great, though, and features some great originals by piano player Ken Chaney, like "The Creeper" and "Trippin" – plus the cuts "Mellow Dreamin", "The Devil Made Me Do Dat", and "Black & White". ✨✧ Young-Holt UnlimitedWack Wack/Young-Holt Unlimited On Stage ... CD
Brunswick/Edsel (UK), Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 of the best albums by this legendary funky instrumental combo! Wack Wack is the group's first – recorded after they left Ramsey Lewis, and with a tight jazzy feel that's similar to some of the work they did in his classic trio. The album's got a great groove – and apart from the classic "Wack Wack", it also features great soul jazz versions of "Song For My Father", "Sunny", "Monday Monday", and "You Know That I Love You". The On Stage album is even livelier – and it captures the band with a nice tight groove, and a good dose of the humor they brought to their in-person recordings. The album includes the great originals "Yon Gimme Thum" and "Ain't There Something Money Can't Buy" – plus a very smoking medley of some of the tracks they used to do with Ramsey Lewis. Great stuff! ✨✧ Young/HoltFeature Spot ... LP
Cadet, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Great early work from the Young/Holt combo – a debut outing under their own name, done before their music on Brunswick Records! Before they went off to record on their own – or maybe as a prediction that they would – Eldee Young and Red Holt cut this album of jazz tracks during the time that they were working with Ramsey Lewis! Since the album's a piano trio record, with Lewis on piano, it's sort of the same thing as the records they cut with him, but since they're on the marquee over his name, there's a little bit more focus on Young's bass and Holt's drumming. Tracks include "Dee's New Blues", "Travel On", "It Ain't Necessarily So", "Swamp Girl", and "Peace & Tranquility", and the album grooves with a good Chicago soul jazz sound. LP, Vinyl record album

Redd Holt UnlimitedIsaac, Isaac, Isaac ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), 1974. Used ... $24.99
An excellent album by Isaac Redd Holt – one half of the incredible Young-Holt rhythm team, bursting out nicely here on his own! This is Redd's second album – first for Paula, as the other one was a jazz effort on Argo back in the 60s – and it's a wild blend of jazz, funk, and a lot of other weird sounds. The introduction's totally cool, and features Redd running through a list of hip little clubs in American cities, then the album launches into the great "Listen to the Drums", which has a tight pounding groove, and moves on to a whole bunch of other jazzy cuts like "Flo", "Slow Funk", and "Let the Spirit In". Redd sings a bit, which isn't too bad (mostly), but it's the grooves that will keep you coming back. Very much in the spirit of Roy Porter's legendary funk albums – but probably a bit tighter! CD

Argo, 1961. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An early solo album cut by Eldee Young, back in the days when he was Ramsey Lewis' bassist, and before he formed the Young-Holt trio. The record's a good example of the strong humor that Eldee would later display in the Young-Holt group, and it's got a great batch of groovy tracks that have a tight soulful sound, with lots of nice tricks and surprises. The group includes Leo Wright, Mal Waldron, Redd Holt, and Richard Evans, who plays bass on some tracks while Eldee picks up the cello. The album's got a great version of Oscar Brown's "Mr. Kicks", plsu the tracks "Just For Kicks", "Truly", "Big Brother", and "When Johnny Comes Marching Home", done in a very groovy way! The fourth and final Eric B & Rakim LP from their classic mid 80s to early 90s run – with some of Rakim's finest rhymes and most devasting delivery to date, and some of Eric B's best production, too! The title track, if course, is a monster – with Rakim's precise rhymes, the furious funky beat, massive soul jazz bass and horn bit culled from Young-Holt Unlimited and Kool & The Gang samples, it'll be a stunner til the end of time – but the record as a whole deserves an eternal shelf life. The end of an incredible era in hip hop. "What's On Your Mind", "Teach The Children", "Pass The Hand Grenade", "Casualties Of War", "Rest Assured", "The Punisher", "Relax With Pep", "Keep The Beat", "What's Going On" and "Kick Along". CD

✨✧ Ramsey LewisIn Crowd ... LP
Argo, 1965. Very Good- ... $6.99
One of the biggest jazz albums of the 60s – and a crucial crossover set from the legendary Ramsey Lewis trio! The record's a live one, which gives the group a perfect chance to show off their special genius – not just soulful grooves from Ramsey on piano, but wickedly sharp and playful basslines from the great Eldee Young, and equally inventive work on drums from Redd Holt – both fantastic players who would soon break out on their own as Young Holt Unlimited! There's a surprising mix of modes on the record, too – as Ramsey begins with the group's classic reading of "The In Crowd" – formerly a soul tune, but maybe more of a hit here in their instrumental reading – then runs through material that really showcases the creative depth of the group, on titles that include "Love Theme From Spartacus", "Felicidade", "Come Sunday", and "You Been Talkin Bout Me Baby". In case you think the folks at Chess were putting too fine a point on the earthy origins of Ramsey's jazz, the title's actually one that follows from an earlier album Ramsey cut for Mercury – and features a similar cover of a shovel digging in the dirt! The tracks are a great blend of the rich approaches to piano jazz performed by the Lewis trio with Eldee Young and Red Holt – with some tracks bluesy, some tracks upbeat, some whimsey, and a few that groove in very surprising places. A killer live set from Ramsey Lewis and his classic early 60s trio – a record that's not nearly as well known as The In Crowd, but every bit as great! Drummer Red Holt and bassist Eldee Young really get in some great elements here – working with Ramsey's piano in a groove that's far more than the standard trio mode of the time – and much more in a triangulated exchange of energy that's filled with life and joy throughout! Side one begins with a 12 minute "West Side Story Medley" – one that starts slow, but really builds with excitement as the tune rolls on – and other tunes include a version of "My Babe", with some funky cello work by Eldee Young; a soul-stepping take on "Something You Got"; Ramsey's original "The Caves"; and versions of "People", "Fly Me To The Moon", and "The Shelter Of Your Arms". Ramsey Lewis TrioBossa Nova ... CD
Argo/MCA (Japan), 1962. Used ... $18.99
One of the most unique albums from Ramsey Lewis' early years at Chess Records – a spare set of bossa groovers that has the Lewis trio with Eldee Young and Redd Holt augmented by added Brazilian percussion and guitar! The sound is spare, sharp, and soulful – and the record's one of the first small combo bossa dates like this in the US – a 1962 effort that even predates most of Verve's better known bossa jazz albums of the 60s, and which matches their groovy energy wonderfully. The record's quite an unusual one for Lewis, and it's further proof that the trio with Young and Holt was an incredibly dynamic outfit! Two tracks on the album – "A Noite Do Meu Bem" and "Cara De Palhacao" – feature vocals, by Carmen Costa and Josef Paulo, respectively – and other tracks are all instrumental, and include "Samba De Orpheus", "O Pato", "Roda Moinho", "Roda Moinho", and "Cancao Para Geralda". Blue Note, Late 60s. Used ... $24.99
A seminal album from altoist Jackie McLean – and a set that serves as a key bridge between his mid 60s avant work in the "new thing" scene, and the deeper, spiritual sounds he'd play in years to come! There's a sense of balance here that grabs us right from the start – especially on the album's leadoff track "Soul" – written by Grachan Moncur, and featuring this very hip, very righteous spoken passage from Barbara Simmons – kind of a discourse on the idiom of the title! The group features key McLean associates – a young Woody Shaw on trumpet, plus Moncur on trombone, Lamont Johnson on piano, Scotty Holt on bass, and Rashied Ali on drums – and titles include "Soul", "Big Ben's Voice", "Conversion Point", and "Erdu" – plus an alternate take of "Big Ben's Voice"! A pivotal session from the late 60s – one that has Jackie McLean pulling things back a bit from his "new thing" period, and turning towards the spiritual soulful groove that would characterize his early 70s work! The album bristles with excitement – still very much informed by a knowledge of the space explored during Jackie's avant years, but never quite willing to go to that space – especially if it means sacrificing the soulful swing of the set! The group's filled with young soulful modernists – including Woody Shaw on trumpet, Lamont Johnson on piano, Scott Holt on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – and Jackie himself seems to be working out a whole new phase of his career with each new track – showing that even when he was at his "new thing" best, he was still ready to move on! In a way, the record feels similar to the work of the Cabildos group in Italy – but with less of the band's heavy funk moments. Titles include "Sun Ray", "DM", "Inner Face Rebirth", "Black Marble", and a nice mellow version of "Children Of The Night". Great all the way through – and a real treasure if you dig mellow electric grooves! LP, Vinyl record album

Rhino, Late 60s/1970s. Used 4 CDs ... Out Of Stock
One of the funkiest box sets we've ever seen – and amazingly issued by an American major label! ✨✧ Odell Brown & The Organ-IzersDucky ... LP
Cadet, 1967. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Killer organ jazz from the Chicago scene of the late 60s – one of the few Chess albums recorded by organist Odell Brown, an artist who'd go on to behind-the-scenes fame in the world of soul later on in the 70s! Here, Odell hosts a cool combo that features his own Hammond work in the lead – with other local players who include Artee "Duke" Payne on alto, Tommy Purvis on tenor, Phil Upchurch on bass, and Master Henry Gibson on conga – all grooving nicely through short "combo" oriented organ cuts like "Get Off My Back", "Mirar, Mirar", "She's Coming My Way", "Tough Tip", and "No More Water In The Well". They play with a mix of funkiness and virtuosity, and with the same sense of wit as contemporaries like the Jack McDuff group or Young-Holt Unlimited! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ella Fitzgerald/Ramsey Lewis/Jimmy Smith/Kenny BurrellVerve Wishes You A Swinging Christmas (Swinging Christmas/Sound Of Christmas/Christmas 64/Have Yourself A Soulful Little Christmas) (180 gram 4LP set) ... LP
Verve, Mid 60s. New Copy 4LP ... Out Of Stock
Four Christmas classics in one package – two from Verve, two from Chess Records! First up is the album Ella Fitzgerald Wishes You A Swinging Christmas – a wonderful Holiday album that's stayed fresh for years! Ella's got a perfect style to interpret these numbers – working with Frank DeVol and Russ Garcia in a set of lightly jazzy versions of Christmas favorites like "Sleigh Ride", "Jingle Bells", "Winter Wonderland", "White Christmas", "Frosty The Snowman", and one of the best versions of "What Are You Doing New Years Eve" ever recorded! The Sound Of Christmas album by Ramsey Lewis is a classic – and probably one of the best-selling Christmas jazz albums of all time! Ramsey and his classic trio with Redd Holt and Eldee Young serve up a tight set of grooves based around Holiday favorites like "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town", "Winter Wonderland", "Here Comes Santa Claus", "The Christmas Song", and "Sleigh Ride" – and also carve out a few nice originals like "Christmas Blues" and "The Sound Of Christmas". Side one features the trio on its own, and side two features added arrangements by Riley Hampton – swirling around to expand the groove even more! Christmas 64 – also issued as Christmas Cookin – is as cookin a Christmas album as you'll ever find! Jazz organ giant Jimmy Smith works with Billy Byers to craft some sublime instrumentals that have his Hammond interpreting Christmas classics like "We Three Kings", "White Christmas", "Silent Night", "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", and "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town". If you know Jimmy from the time, you know that he can really make tracks like these groove nicely – and take them to places you never expected! Last up is the album Have Yourself A Soulful Little Christmas, from guitarist Kenny Burrell – on which he grooves nicely and gently over arrangements by Richard Evans, perfectly crafted in that soul jazz mode of his 60s work for Chess – not Kenny's most challenging format, to be sure, but proof that he often works better in a more structured environment than a freer one. Titles include "Away In A Manger", "My Favorite Things", "Little Drummer Boy", "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas", "Merry Christmas Baby", and "Go Where I Send Thee". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Noah HowardNoah Howard Quartet To At Judson Hall – Revisited (Noah Howard Quartet/At Judson Hall) ... CD
ESP/Hat Art (Switzerland), 1966. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of rare albums from reedman Noah Howard – back to back in a single set! First up is the Noah Howard Quartet album from 1966 – one of the most obscure albums on the ESP label in the 60s – and a brilliant early chapter in the career of reedman Noah Howard! Howard is maybe best known for his contributions to the European scene from the end of the 60s into the 70s – but here, he's already a stunning giant on the New York scene – blowing alto with a sound that's very much all his own, and which makes his performance here as both a soloist and leader a key part of the early ESP label legacy. The group is piano-less – a unique ensemble with Ric Colbeck on trumpet, Scotty Holt on bass, and Dave Grant on percussion – all unknown players, but great partners for Howard on the record – on titles that include "Henry's Street", "Apotheosis", "Apotheosis Extension I", and "And About Love". At Judson Hall features a brilliant live performance from the young Noah Howard – working here at a level that's very much on the most spiritual side of the ESP label spectrum, and which also shows the new level of inventive group structures that were coming into play on the New York scene at the time! The record's got a sense of soulful structure and individual freedom that's a bit like the classics of Archie Shepp at the time – as Howard blows alto alongside trumpeter Ric Colbeck, an unusual player who was also on his quartet studio session for the label. A young Dave Burrell makes a great appearance on piano, alongside the bass of Sirone, cello of Catherine Norris, and percussion of Bobby Kapp – as the group make their way through two side-long tracks, "This Place Called Earth" and "Homage To Coltrane". Pressure Sounds (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Of all the Prince Far I dub encounters, this one's the most essential – a modern dub classic! A young Adrian Sherwood mans the desk over Far I's driving rhythms with a helping hand from British reggae great Dennis Bovell. Though this doesn't get as way out as some of the spaciest ON-U dubs that we've loved over the years, Sherwood treats the rhythms with a respect they well deserve, while still bringing a fresh outlook to the knob twirling that recasts these mighty rhythms into ghostly soudscapes. The band is a veritable all star Jamaican rhythm section, including Fish Clarke, Sly, Horsemouth & Santa on drums, Flabba Holt on bass, Bingy Bunny & Chinna Smith on guitar, and Sticky Thompson on percussion. 10 cuts, including our faves "Long Life", "The Encounter" & "Abderrahane". Dancefloor cookers from the prime Northern Soul years – all instrumental numbers on this sharp compilation on Kent – 45 sides from a labels like Money, Villa, Swan, King, Epic and Warner Brothers! For all the wonderful Kent soul compilations we've gotten our dusty fingers on over the years, it's a wonder they're never been one devoted to instrumentals – until now! An incredible collection of funky breaks – and better than any other volume in this all-great series! ✨✧ Ornette ColemanRound Trip – The Complete Ornette Coleman On Blue Note (At The Golden Circle/Empty Foxhole/New York Is Now/Love Call/New & Old Gospel) (6LP set – 180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, Late 60s. New Copy 6LP ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous package of work from Ornette Coleman – five albums issued under his own name, and one collaboration with Jackie McLean too! First up are At The Golden Circle Vols 1 & 2 – important second chapter work from Ornette Coleman – a record that marked a real shift in his sound from the Atlantic Records years – issued by Blue Note at a level that gave the rest of the world a chance to see what Ornette had been cooking up on the underground scene! The album was recorded in Stockholm – in the tradition of European live performances that saw Coleman grow so strongly in the mid 60s – and the tracks are long, free, and full of improvised moments – with Ornette adding in trumpet and violin next to his familiar alto – in a trio with David Izenzon on bass and Charles Moffett on drums – both fantastic players who can be loose at the right moments, and bring things back at others. Tracks are long and unbridled – with less of the rhythmic changes that you'd hear in work by the classic quartet, and more of a full-on fierce soloing mode. Titles include "Snowflakes & Sunshine", "Morning Song", "Faces & Places", "Dee Dee", "Dawn", "The Riddle", and "Antiques". Next is Empty Foxhole – one of our favorite Ornette Coleman albums of the post-Atlantic 60s years – a set that still hangs onto some of the bold rhythmic conception of his previous records, but also points the way towards his freer jazz modes to come! The group's a trio – with really tremendous work from Charlie Haden on bass, able to match Coleman's energy with effortless ease, and really getting a lot of room to leave his mark on the music – plus the very young (10!) Denardo Coleman, who plays drums here with this stark, simple style that's not only completely unique, but which also leaves a lot of open room left for Haden and Ornette to really stretch out. Ornette plays his usual alto, plus trumpet and violin – and titles include "Good Old Days", "The Empty Foxhole", "Zig Zag", and "Freeway Express". Next is New York Is Now – a pretty bold statement from saxophonist Ornette Coleman, but one that definitely shows his shift in role – from a major force on the LA underground of the early 60s, to an artist who was helping pave the way for a huge wave of growth on the New York downtown scene in years to come! Ornette's at his most late 60s unbridled here – freer than before, and working with a lineup that includes Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on drums – still no piano at all – plus great work from Dewey Redman on tenor, who really burst into new prominence with this album. Ornette plays a bit of violin alongside alto sax – and tracks include "Toy Dance", "Round Trip", "Broad Way Blues", and "We Now Interrupt For A Commercial". Then comes Love Call – a really great late 60s session from Ornette Coleman – one that shows is increasing expansion in sounds and styles, and which also offers a bridge between avant jazz generations too! That bridge comes in the presence of Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on drums – a surprising Coltrane rhythm duo, working here with Ornette's mindblowing work on alto sax, and tenor from a young Dewey Redman – already a crucially intense player here next to Coleman, as both are set free in a group without any piano – that Ornette melding of rhythm and melody, but with a very different vibe than the Atlantic years! Coleman blows trumpet on one tune – and titles include "Love Call", "Airborne", "Check Out Time", and "Open To The Public". The set also includes the album New & Old Gospel – one of Jackie McLean's last "new thing" albums for Blue Note – and a very unique record that features Ornette Coleman on trumpet! The sound here is stark and hard – slight hints of the soulfulness that the "gospel" in the title might imply, mixed with the angular exploratory sound that McLean had been forging at Blue Note during the mid 60s – a wonderful balance that really gives the record a lot of bite! The album's easily one of the most "out" that McLean ever recorded, and the group also includes Lamont Johnson on piano, Scott Holt on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – all pushing themselves in the company of the avant jazz giants. Tracks include the extended "Lifeline" suite, which takes up all of side one – plus "Old Gospel" and "Strange As It Seems". LP, Vinyl record album

Brunswick/Solid (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An excellent second album by Barbara Acklin – and a perfect demonstration of her really unique Chicago soul talents! Acklin's really at the cusp of two generations here – at one level still with some of the sweetness of the earlier style of 60s girl soul, but at another full of the power and pride that was really flowing into other artists of the 70s – a balance that's a great summation of the unique way that Chicago artists could play both ends of the spectrum, and come up with something really unique in the process! The album includes the great cut "Am I The Same Girl", a loping soul groover that was all set to be a big single for Barbara – but for some reason, Brunswick held the tape back, stripped off the vocals, put on some piano, and released it as the instrumental "Soulful Strut" by Young-Holt Unlimited at the same time! Yet we still dig Barbara's version better, though – nestled here alongside other great cuts that include "Seven Days of Night", "A Raggedy Ride", "Go With Love", "Mr Sunshine", "Until You Return", and "Where Would I Go". ECM, 1992. Used ... $7.99
Steven Micus works here entirely on his own – in a record that creates these really beautiful sounds from a variety of different steeldrums, but in ways that are very different than any other use of the instruments! Micus often handles the instruments with the slow pace and careful tension of his other recordings – then brings in bits of elements from Eastern instruments – including dilruba, nay, sinding, and kortholt – sometimes mixed with a bit of his own voice, sometimes acting as voices on their own. The record clearly draws from global sources, but has nothing inherently global about it – as Micus really transforms everything in the echoey, open space provided by ECM. Titles include "Nomad Song", "To The Evening Child", "Morganstern", "Young Moon", "Yuko's Eyes", and "Desert Poem". CD
