The Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross tradition lives on – in a smoking live set that features Indian singer Yolanda Bavan joining the group in place of recently-departed Ross! Bavan's ability to groove and improvise is every bit as great as that of Annie Ross – and she fits in nicely next to the warm lyrics of John Hendricks, and the sweetly crackling bop vocals of Dave Lambert. Plus, the live setting seems to open the whole group up even more – as they're working with a great combo that features Coleman Hawkins and Clark Terry sitting in with the Gildo Mahones trio that includes George Tucker on bass and Jimmie Smith on drums. The tunes are all very soulful and swinging – and the album easily sits with the best Columbia work by the older version of the group! A tight collection of gems from Ghana and Cape Verde – pulled together by Arp Frique, as an illustration of the sounds that have inspired him greatly over the years! The package features four cuts that move with mighty tight grooves – very upbeat, but in ways that are different than American or European club of the time – with instrumentation that's mostly live, but plenty electronic too – live drums mixed with keyboards, skittish guitars, horns, and other elements that percolate a really great groove for the vocals! Arguably the last great album to come from the classic Pat Metheny collaboration with Lyle Mays – a record that's tightened up considerably from some of the group's earlier efforts, but which gives as its reward some wonderfully compelling tunes! Pat's still very much influenced here by a Brazilian fusion style – but he takes that approach, dismantles it, pulls out the best elements – and extrapolates them into a sound that's uniquely his own. Wordless vocals slide out on a few numbers, while guitar and keys sing alongside earthier percussion – in a style that's extremely evocative, and shows that even riding the top of his own success, Metheny was still more than willing to bring in new modes. Sure it's not his Duke recordings, and sure, the sound's a bit 70s-ish – but Bobby's voice is always fantastic, and he still sounds great in this smooth batch of tracks recorded in LA. A very sharp 5CD set that brings together some of the best work that Robert Wyatt did during the 80s! This stuff is always criminally overlooked (perhaps because it's a bit subtler than his earlier stuff) – which is a shame, because it's fantastically beautiful, and filled with amazing moments of warmth, honesty, and creativity. The box is very nicely done, and a nifty treasure chest that includes tracks separated as Bits, Pieces, Work In Progress, Animals and Remixes and titles such as "Shipbuilding (Remastered Version", "Was A Friend", "Yesterday Man", "I'm A Believer (Previously Unreleased Extended Version", "Yolanda", "Amber & The Amberines", and the 19+ minute soundtrack to The Animal's Film and more.
