The compilation's a much-needed overview of the limited edition 45s issued by the Stones Throw label – a genre-busting blend of hip hop, deep funk, and turntable work – always exciting, and with a style that's unlike anything else we can think of! The package really offers a great sampling of the work on these hard-to-find singles – 22 ultra-hip titles that are as appealing to any fan of classic funk as they are a fan of underground hip hop. A really unusual collection, with a sound that's very much its own – a set that seeks not to pin down a certain scene or style of music – but instead maybe capture a special mood, one that's very much in line with the title! There's definitely a certain sort of melancholy to the set – yet that's only part of the picture too – as many of these cuts have a vibe that's post-folk, post-Sunshine pop – maybe a bit rootsy in production, but also served up with a mature approach to songwriting and vocals that really set the tunes apart. You might think of these artists as being farther left field of America at their height – and we mean that in the best way possible – working with some of the harmonies and blueness of Alzo & Udine, and in a similar mix of acoustic and electric instrumentation that really fits the spirit of the lyrics. Guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel has been giving us music for years – but on recent releases, he really seems to have found a great place to express himself – a quintet that includes work from Ambrose Akinmusire on trumpet and Brad Mehldau on piano – both musicians that seem completely transformed in the presence of Wolfgang! The sound is open, spare, and often somewhat tentative – as befits Muthspiel's legacy – but there's also these shimmering moments that come from Akimusire on trumpet, and occasional currents of sentiment from Mehldau's piano – both forces that really open up the sound of the record. The group also features Larry Grenadier on bass and Eric Harland on drums – and titles include "For Django", "Descendants", "Clearing", "Panorama", "Blueshead", "Buenos Aires", "Where The River Goes", and "One Day My Prince Was Gone". Man! This one's a stunning 70s set from the great Cal Tjader – a set that features Charlie Byrd on guitar, and some especially great electric piano lines from Mike Wolff – which makes for a cool electric/acoustic combination that really sends the album home nicely! The record's light years away from Byrd's Brazilian work of the 60s, or any of his mellower dates from later years – and Tjader really seems to have picked up a freer sense of rhythm from the Airto/Flora generation, which is no surprise, given their prominence on his local Bay Area scene. Other players include John Heard on bass, Joe Byrd on electric bass, and percussion from Mike Stephans, Dick Berk, and Mayuto Correa – all players who help change out the bottom grooves nicely from track to track. Titles include Joe Henderson's "Black Narcissus", Airto's "Tambo In 7/4" and "San Francisco River", Jobim's "Tereza My Love", Wolff's "Sad Eyes", and a version of "My Cherie Amour". Brilliant funky instrumentals from the UK Cavendish Sound Library – a company who could sometimes recorded more staid music, although that certainly wasn't the case with the gems on this collection! The music is by a handful of British studio talents of the time – most of whom come from the jazz scene in earlier years – and provide a great update of their earlier talents with some very sweet electric touches! Many of these tunes have some really great keyboards – Fender Rhodes or even moogier elements – and many also have wicked basslines next to the funky drums, which really make things kick throughout. These tunes are vastly undiscovered – at least in comparison to better-known sound library funk from companies like KPM or DeWolfe – but we'd put these grooves right up there with the best of that bunch too. A set that's definitely Pure Jerry – as the record features Jerry on acoustic guitar and vocals, with just the acoustic bass of John Kahn for support! The music has that core acoustic Garcia roots sensibility – that sideline that Jerry started developing alongside his work with the Grateful Dead, almost from the start – but which really blossomed on performances like this in the 80s.
