✨✧ Al Grey & The Basie WingLast Of The Big Plungers ... LP
Argo, 1959. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Basie-esque stuff by Al Grey, who made his name playing trombone in Basie's band. The group includes a lot of other Basie-ites, including Billy Mitchell, Joe Newman, and Benny Powell. The great Floyd Morris (one of Chicago's best talents of the time!) plays piano, and titles include "Bluish Grey", "The Elder", "Kenie-Konie", and "How Come You Do Me Like You Do". LP, Vinyl record album

Alex Wing & David BoykinVision Without Words ... CD
Alex Wing, 2019. New Copy ... $4.99
One of the most unusual albums we've ever heard from David Boykin – a set of spare duets with multi-instrumentalist Alex Wing – done at a level that really pushes Boykin's sounds on both tenor and bass clarinet! The tunes here are all freely improvised, and Wing often plays guitar – in an open, textural style that moves all up and down the instrument in a variety of ways – somewhat in a legacy that would include Derek Bailey or Eugene Chadbourne, and which is a very different setting for Boykin – something you can really hear in the way he's shaping his notes and choosing his sounds! Wing also plays a bit of alto clarinet, hulusi, and kalimba – but it's the guitar/reed moments on the album that hold us most rapt – served up here in material from two different sessions. CD

Nico FidencoMake Love On The Wing/Sweet Disco Funky – Emanuelle E Gli Ultimi Cannibali ... 7-inch
Four Flies (Italy), Late 70s. New Copy (pic cover)... $19.99
A track from one of the more savage Emmanuelle films of the 70s – and pretty darn groovy! "Make Love On The Wing" is an upbeat clubby track – lots of romping drums at the core, and vocals from Ulla Linder that have a slightly creepy take on the usual disco diva mode! The clubby vibe continues on "Sweet Disco Funky" – an upbeat instrumental from a different film – La Via Della Prostituzione – done with this fast-riffing guitar over relentless basslines – while eerie voices and snakey strings pepper the tune! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Sarah VaughanVaughan & Violins (Wing pressing) ... LP
Mercury/Wing, 1958. Very Good+ ... $1.99
A really rich album by Sarah Vaughan – recorded in Paris in 1958, with orchestrations by Quincy Jones – and large group backing that includes some great tenor work by Zoot Sims! The session's one of Vaughan's most cohesive albums of the period, and although it's got "violins" in the title, it's not too drippy or sleepy, thanks to Quincy – who keeps the whole thing moving along nicely, with just the right amount of swing and soul to work perfectly with Vaughan's vocals! Titles include "Live For Love", "I'll Close My Eyes", "That's All", "Day By Day", "The Thrill Is Gone", and "Love Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Jeff MajorsFor Us All (Yoka Boka) ... LP
Glass Wing/Invisible City Editions (Canada), 1986. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A very unusual shift for spiritual jazz in the 80s – a set that combines the acoustic energy of the 70s with some newer electric touches – all in a way that takes off with some soulful elements in the mix! Jeff Majors handles a harp – ala Dorothy Ashby – but the music mixes in bass, drums, and percussion – plus work from Majors on a moog bass and "spirit box" – the last of which feels like a spare drum machine, and is used in nicely gentle ways. There's also a bit of violin, flute, and voices on the record – occasional lyrical touches that almost hit a Minnie Riperton mode, which is very nice. The whole thing makes for a nice blend of spiritual jazz and down to earth soul – on titles that include "Room 400", "Summertime", "If I Can Help Somebody", "Nomad", "Baby Daughter", "Yoka Boka", and "Yasmeen". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited reissue – with a nice booklet of notes!)

✨✧ David BowieStation To Station (remastered) ... CD
EMI, 1976. Used ... $4.99
The second half of Bowie's Thin White Duke years in the studio – a record that's more cool and condensed than his Young American album – but equally sublime in its own sort of way! The format here is much more compact – with a small group working alongside Bowie, still with some currents of Philly soul – but also some of the darker tones that would come to the forefront during the Berlin years after this album's release – a mode that's maybe hinted at by the Man Who Fell To Earth image on the cover. A few tracks are long, and build up beautifully – showing a new sort of subtlety from Bowie – and titles include the classic "Station To Station", plus "Golden Years", "Word On A Wing", "TVC 15", "Stay", and "Wild Is The Wind". Edikanfo Super African BandPace Setters ... CD
EG/Glitterbeat (Germany), 1981. New Copy ... $15.99
A classic album from this great group from Ghana – one that probably got more exposure than usual, thanks to the fact that they were taken under the wing of Brian Eno, who produced the album, in a tradition that would stretch back to Ginger Baker's work with Fela! The group have a great sound here – bold, fast-moving rhythms – with elements in Eno's production that almost recall his work with the Talking Heads – especially his way of bringing out the most robust elements in the basslines and percussion! The whole thing is done with a great balance – nicely respectful, but also with a slight updating of the sonic quality – yet never in a way that's got the more commercial inclinations of the world music boom to come. There's some cool moogy moments at time – almost bursting out of the mix in the way that Eno's electronics would pepper some of his early work with Roxy Music – and titles include "Gbenta", "Something Lefeh-O", "Blinking Eyes", and "Moonlight Africa". Montgomery ExpressMontgomery Express Does Party Fever & Other Songs Of The Montgomery Movement ... CD
Folkways, 1974. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.99
A massive lost funk classic – one of those rarer than rare albums that's well worth the fuss! The Montgomery Express were a Florida combo who played on the state's small club circuit – working equally well on their own, or backing up a number of better known singers. The group's got a diversity that's really great – and they're equally well-suited to longer, trippier funk instrumentals, and shorter more soul-based tunes. The vocal numbers are especially haunting, as they've got a moody and sad feel that's more like New Jersey or Detroit group soul of the time than the usual Miami soul – and the funkier tunes have a nice psychedelic approach that uses plenty of sweetly-tuned guitar! 8 tracks in all – "Party Fever", "Precious Wing", "Montgomery Movement", "Gotta Make A Comeback", "Who", "Steal Away", "I'm Standing By", and "Left Me With A Memory". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

SlitsCut (with bonus track) ... LP
Island (UK), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 36.99
Still one of THE standout records of the post-punk years – the simple but effective dub statement of three London ladies with decidedly left wing politics! The record's in a format that would later be copped by dozens of groups – one that mixes together post-punk and heavy dub – the former of which is served up with some nice rough guitars and crackly vocals, and the latter which is done even better with some super-solid production by Dennis Bovell! Titles include "Shoplifting", "Spend Spend Spend", "Instant Hit", "Newtown", "Ping Pong Affair", and the seminal "Typical Girls"! Features a bonus track – The Slits' version of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine". LP, Vinyl record album

Yan TreggerCatchy ... CD
BBE (UK), 1978. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
The cover looks gothic, but the sound is plenty darn groovy – a sweet set of sound library instrumentals from the 70s scene in Paris – most of them served up with an upbeat, clubby sort of vibe! Yan Tregger may not be one of those names that immediately comes to the lips of underground club collectors – but there's plenty of great clubby moments here, with grooves that bubble on tight basslines, swing with sweet keyboards, and often get lots of riffing guitar in the mix! Yet there's also some nicely weird touches too – as you might expect from a record that was cut far from the mainstream, as part of a studio library set – the kind of weird funky elements you might find on some of the more obscure 12" singles from the late 70s underground. Titles include "Carry On", "Gimmicky", "Sunny Wing", "Light Heart (parts 1 & 2)", "Riff On", "Lyric Soul", "Slow Zoom", and "This Time". CD

At the time, Neil didn't think the record was as strong as some of his other work – but to us, fans of the man's music, the whole thing is an essential treasure – a nice bridge between a few different modes of his shifting 70s palette, especially since there's some up-close, acoustic numbers that really reveal a personal side of Young, and some of the difficulties he was going through at the time. Titles include "Florida", "Little Wing", "We Don't Smoke It No More", "Separate Ways", "Try", "Mexico", "Star Of Bethlehem", "Vacancy", and "Kansas". CD

VariousMore Long Lost Honkers & Twangers – Rare 60s Instrumentals ... CD
Ace (UK), Early 60s. New Copy ... $16.99 22.99
Searing instrumentals from the glory days of the electric guitar – that initial moment when the fuzz was turned up, the echo expanded, and the instrument finally got a chance to step out in the lead in the kind of totally wonderful tracks like these! The Ventures are pictured on the cover, but most of the music is from an underground much deeper than that group – tracks delivered with a fair bit of darkness, often pulled from rare singles, and included here with 14 previously-unissued tracks! Many of these numbers are maybe more in a legacy of Link Wray than some of the cleaner surf rock groups of the time – and as always with Ace, the presentation, notes, and sound are superb. Titles include "Wolf Pack" by The Mus Twangs, "Mirage" by The Night Caps, "Diamond Back" by Cecil Moore & The Notes, "Red Wing" by The Carnations, "Zombie Surfer" by The Ramrods, "Swing The Mess Around" by Mike Gordon & The Agates, "Harlem Nocturne" by The Music City Swingers, "Peace Pipe" by The Marksmen, "Russian Roulette" by The Zanies, "Blue Money" by The Ventures, and "Guitare Jet" by Les Jaguars. VariousThose Shocking Shaking Days – Indonesian Hard Psychedelic Progressive Rock & Funk 1970 to 1978 ... LP
Now Again, 1970s. New Copy 3 LPs ... $25.99 29.98
A truly incredible overview of 70s Indonesian funk, rock and psychedelia infused recordings – and it's beautifully put together, to boot – one of the very best compilations yet from Stones Throw's Now Again branch! There's an undercurrent of funk to most of this material, but it's always topped off with prog & psych rhythmic heaviness and dexterity, and usually done with passionate, feverish vocals. The story of Indonesian underground music of the time is a complicated one, and one that's been hard to come by outside of the region, given the difficult political circumstances of the time. This amazing set does a tremendous service for this music. Essential! Al takes over the whole deal with this one – as the record features him writing, producing, arranging, and even playing lead guitar – stepping out from under the protective wing of Willie Mitchell, and doing a surprisingly great job overall! Al does get a bit of help in the studio – from Fred Jordan and Reuben Fairfax, whose names are hidden in smaller type, under the message on the back that says that the record is "something new" – but as we've come to learn from all the other Al Green records we've loved over the years, the man himself is more than enough to make the record wonderful – with vocals that are unbeatable at this point in his career! Mazurek blows piccolo trumpet, but also adds in some electronics – and Taylor is mindblowing on drums, playing with a style that's open, but always gently swinging – and matched with some synth bass from Josh Johnson, who also plays organ and piano on the set. ✨✧ VariousAge Of Worry – From Country Pop To Freak Folk – The Space Age Relics Of Monument Records 1960 to 1970 ... LP
Monument/Iron Mountain Analog Research (Australia), 1960s. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic sounds from one of the most troubled decades in modern American history – a moment so rocky, its changes and politics even touched the world of country music! While you might think of country as being just a flag-waving, gun-toting version of society, these rare gems show a completely different world – served up by thoughtful, topical tunes that are maybe a more mid-center version of the themes that were more popularly taken up by folk music or hippies at the time! The work is almost all from obscure 45rpm offerings by Monument Records – a very interesting company in the 60s, one that was always a bit off to the left of the Nashville mainstream, and more than willing to take chances – especially with unusual material like this. Some tracks are by older artists, getting hip to the times – but many more are by talents that managed to serve up a few great songs, then slide off the scene for good – leaving us just these tasty relics to remember them by. Omni brought the same great presentation to the package as their Hillbillies In Hell series – on a set of 18 titles that include "Mac The Merchant" by Durwood Haddock, "Age Of Worry" by Billy Walker, "Code Alarm 7" by Vern Stovall, "The Night Miss Nancy Ann's Hotel For Single Girls Burned Down" by Tex Williams, "Love Thy Neighbor" by Carl Vaughn, "Every Man Has A Prison" by Rusty Draper, "Is This The Way Of The Free" by Kenny Jones, "Left Wing Birds" by The Charades, and "A Gun Don't Make A Man" by Capt Ty Herrington. All Score Media (Germany), 1960s/1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Pretty groovy stuff – and not nearly as "sentimental" as the title might make you think! The tracks on the set are all vocal numbers from cheesy Italian films of the 60s and 70s, and many of them have the groovy bounce that you'd expect from material on labels like Black Cat, Easy Tempo, and Crippled Dick. In most cases, the vocals are in Italian, and sung in a really strange style – but in others, they're also in English, which makes the whole thing even groovier! Titles include "Who Is That Man" by Gianna, "L'Umo Che Sappara" by Raoul, "Sera Di Baldoria" and "Non Dovrei" by Franco Morselli, "Papaya Island" by Stelvio Cipriani, "Dove Sei California" by Maria Teresa, "I'm Not Your Pony" by Giulia Di Mutiis, "Make Love On A Wing" by Ulla Linder, and "A Devious Man" by Mircha Carven. Snarling sounds from the LA scene of the 60s – really raw material that represents the more sinister side of the Sunset Strip scene – all pulled from the vaults of superproducer Gary Paxton! Paxton was one of the few that really had his ear to the ground at the time – and as with his work in other modes, the presentation of these gritty, garagey gems is superb – captured with just the right sort of sneer to make the edge in the music come through – still the familiar combination of guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards – but handled in ways that are very different than the sound of a few years before! The set features a number of unissued tracks appearing here for the first time ever, plus other gems issued as 45s on small labels in LA – 24 tracks, presented with detailed notes, on titles that include "My Dream" by The Buddhas, "I Told You So" by The Avengers, "In The Heat Of The Night" by Mental Institution, "See If I Care" by Ken & The Fourth Dimension, "The Highly Successful Young Rupert White" by The Chocolate Tunnel, "Melodyland Loser" by The New Wing, "Our Love Should Last Forever" by The Whatt Four, "Grey Zone" by The Fog, "Guaranteed Love" by Limey & The Yanks, "Peddlers Of Hate" by Don Hinson, "I Need Love" by The New Wing, "I'll Never Let You Go" by Carl Walden & The Humans, "When It's Over" by The Avengers, "You Better Stop Your Messin Around" by The Whatt Four, "Leather Coated Cottage" by Limey & The Yanks, and "This Freedom I Have Found" by an Unknown Artist. Reel To Real, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
Great live work from the Cannonball Adderley Quintet – recorded during a time when the group's star was really rising on Capitol Records, but at a level that's got the more open-ended, freely-blown style of their classic concert dates for Riverside! The material here was all recorded for radio in Seattle, and the fidelity is excellent – sounds that are sharp as any of the group's key live albums of the period – with some very hip announcements between a few of the tracks! And unlike some radio live issues on the market, this one is nice and long – with eight long tracks that really open up – full of magical moments from Cannonball on alto, Nat Adderley on cornet, Joe Zawinul on piano, Victor Gaskin on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums. Titles include "Sticks", "Big P", "The Girl Next Door", "Back Home Blues", "Hippodelphia", "74 Miles Away", "Morning Of The Carnival", and Somewhere". CD
(Excellent package – with great mastering, and a 28 page booklet of notes!)

Pacific Jazz/Kimberly, 1956. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Although the initial release of this music was a cheap attempt to cash in on the tragic fame of the late James Dean, this 1956 session was also one of the nicest big band dates to come out of the Pacific Jazz catalog of the 1950s! Chet Baker and Bud Shank are the featured soloists of the set – and the group's conducted by Johnny Mandel and Bill Holman, both excellent arrangers with a strong feel for soundtrack-oriented material of this sort. Tommy Sands sings vocals on a version of "Let Me Be Loved", which is the only standard on the set – as the rest of the tracks are originals by the great Leith Stevens. The band's filled with other west coasters that you'll recognize – and titles include "The Movie Star", "Jimmy's Theme", "The Search", "Lost Love", and "People". LP, Vinyl record album

Contemporary, 1958. Very Good ... $7.99
Benny Carter swings material from the 20s – but the results are a lot better than you might expect! We'll be honest in saying that the cover and theme of this one always made us figure the record was some sort of "old timey" affair – but Benny's surprisingly cool on the record, and is working in a small group mode that may well be even more deftly compelling than his earlier combo sides for Verve! The group here is only a quartet – with Benny on alto and trumpet, Earl Hines on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums – and it's possibly the modern rhythm section that gives the record a nicely soulful groove, and lets the tunes come off as more than just rehashed classics. Carter's tone on the alto is great – and very nicely recorded, with that edge that was showing up strongly in these later years – and titles include "Laugh Clown Laugh", "Thou Swell", "Who's Sorry Now", "A Monday Date", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "In A Little Spanish Town", and "Mary Lou". ✨✧ Vic DamoneMy Baby Loves To Swing ... LP
Capitol, 1962. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Pure crooning genius from Vic Damone – thanks to fresh arrangements from Capitol maestro Jack Marshall! Marshall's work in the studio was often playful – sometimes a bit too much so, as on his own instrumental albums – but here he brings out a real boldness in Damone's voice, a quality that's strong and masculine, yet also not as emotionally overblown as Damone could sometimes be on weaker albums. The balance is a careful one, but handled beautifully here – in a way that has that rare mature and saloony quality that marks the best of 60s male vocal albums of this nature. Rock-solid work from a rock-solid drummer – the mighty Joe Farnsworth, working here with a core trio that includes Kenny Barron on piano and Peter Washington on bass, plus guest trumpet from Wynton Marsalis on four of the album's ten tracks! The Marsalis presence is nice, but we almost like the trio tracks even better – as it feels like Farnsworth, Barron, and Washington have really found their groove – at a level that's different than some of Joe's recordings with more familiar partners – like David Hazeltine and John Webber – looser, more open at times, and really showing off some different sides of Farnsworth's rhythmic conception. Gary Giddins' great second chapter in the career of Bing Crosby – handled with all the same detail and deep knowledge of the music as the first volume – and continuing this much-needed look at one of the most important figures in pop music during the 20th Century! Crosby helped forge the way forward for artists in so many genres to come – and the years of World War Two were a crucial part of this process – as Bing exploded with international stardom, representing hope and opportunity at a new musical level, while also acting as a cultural ambassador for the US too. An amazingly simple – but amazingly satisfying session from Dexter Gordon! The group's a totally solid quartet with Sonny Clark on piano, Butch Warren on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – and the groove is right in the pocket with a solid solid soulful feel that you don't always get on Gordon's other Blue Note albums! There's a simple elegance here that's really beautiful – Gordon at his post-bop best, but without any of the over-extended modes of his too-long solo years – a mix that's really rare, and carried off impeccably for this set. The record starts with the amazing "Soy Califa", a nice hardbop number with a good Latiny feel, then slides into lots of other nice ones like "McSplivens", "The Backbone", and "Don't Explain". One of the hippest albums from the funky empire that includes Poets Of Rhythm and The Whitefield Brothers – a set of Afro-exotic grooves that really blows our minds – and which opens the group up into whole new territory! There's echoes of Mulatu, Salah Ragab, and other older exotic funk artists in the mix – but as usual for the Poets, the whole thing's put together with a sharp edge of its own – a keen ear for catching the best elements of the original music, and distilling them down to a super-powerful essence – then re-presenting and oddly-producing them with some very unique sounds! Karl Hector joins the group on vocals and percussion – and other instrumentation includes ballaphon, metallophon, horns, and keyboards – all used in really enigmatic ways, and with other-worldly sounds that are simply amazing! Titles include "Followed Path", "When The Sun Breaks Through", "Sahara Swing", "Jabore (part 3)", "Debere", "Transition", "Mystical Brotherhood", "Toure Samar", and "Passau Run". CD

Jimmy James & The VagabondsNew Religion/London Swings/This Is Jimmy James & The Vagabonds/Open Up Your Soul (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Pye/BGO (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99
Four classic albums from this hip British soul group – issued here in a single set, with bonus tracks too! First up is New Religion – a record that was also released in America by Atlantic Records. Although they were a UK soul act, Jimmy James and The Vagabonds were a perfect match for the Atlantic soul stable of the 60s. The group had a smooth group style that was partly uptown, partly northern soul – as clearly illustrated in this album, which is divided up into a "mood red: you feel like leaping" side, and a "mood blue: you feel like digging deeper" side. The band chose some good material that really helps them maintain a solid socking soul sound – including "The Entertainer" and "Ain't Love Good, Ain't Love Proud" by Tony Clarke, "Ain't No Big Thing" and "I'm Just A Fool For You Girl" by Gerald Sims, and "Little Boy Blue" and "People Get Ready" by Curtis Mayfield. Also features "Come To Me Softly", a sweet dreamy ballad by Jimmy, and kind of a bit crossover hit for the boys. London Swings is two-sided monster – as the album was originally split with work from the Alan Bown Set too! Here, the CD features just the live material from the soul group – a smoking performance from Jimmy James & The Vagabonds – one that goes way past the sweetness of their hits, and which has a crowd-pleasing, party-hearty approach to soul that's really great! Jimmy and the group serve up versions of "Sock It To Em JB", "That Driving Beat", "Ain't Too Proud To Beg", "You Don't Know Like I Know", and "Don't Know What I'm Gonna Do". This Is Jimmy James & The Vagabonds is a record that featured some crossover tracks with New Religion – but the set here just features the exclusive cuts – including "I Feel Alright", "I Can't Get Back Home To My Baby", "Never Like This Before", "I Don't Wanna Cry", and "You Showed Me The Way". Open Up Your Soul is a record with a really wonderful sound – the deeply soulful vocals of Jimmy James & The Vagabonds, mixed with rich arrangements handled by Nicky Welsh, and produced to perfection by Brit maestro John Schroeder! The record's got the sophistication of some of the Richard Evans productions over at Chess/Cadet at the same time – and, no surprise, the group lead off with a great cover of The Dells "Wear It On Our Face" – then roll into cuts that include "Cry Like A Baby", "Good Day Sunshine", "Four Walls", "Everybody Loves A Winner", "If You're Gonna Love Me", and "Open Up Your Soul". CD also features 7 more bonus tracks from singles – including "Why", "Bumper To Bumper", "Close The Door", "Give Us A Light", "I Wanna Be your Everything", "Hungry For Love", and "Don't Know What I'm Gonna Do". One of the few albums ever recorded by one of our favorite alto players of the 50s! Dick Johnson is a real lost talent – a sharp-edge player who came from the same Boston scene as Charlie Mariano, and who had a similarly soulful approach! His tone is as sharp as that of Lee Konitz, but he plays with a bit more boppish intensity, and also hits some deeper moments that make you feel like he thinks he's playing a tenor – all of which makes for an incredible record that we've treasured as one of his rare few statements from this brilliant period. We're not sure who the Junnu is here – but the legendary reedman Juhani Aaltonen is definitely the follower, supported here with work by three younger musicians who might qualify as his musical sons! Aaltonen is amazing – every bit as compelling as on his famous Finnish sides of the 70s – blowing tenor and flute, and matched in spirit and soul by the great Jonas Kullhammar – who's also on tenor, and some baritone – really matching Juhani's approach, and reminding us once again that Kullhammar is not only one of the greatest saxophonists of his generation, he's also one of the most generous, and able to shift into the modes of his collaborators. Fantastic solo bass sounds from the mighty Joshua Abrams – a musician who's risen to achieve a very spiritual sense of leadership with other musicians over the years – but who also sounds pretty amazing here on his own! Joshua is often bowing the bass, bringing almost reed-like tones to the instrument at times – with this very strong sense of soundshape which is occasionally balanced by deft work of his fingers, before the music goes quickly back to bowed passages! There's maybe a bit more darkness here than on some of Abrams' more collaborative projects – maybe something he keeps to himself, for himself – in a performance like this. One of the most beautiful albums ever recorded by this legendary AACM pianist! The album was a rare Japanese-only session from 1975, but recorded in Chicago – and it features Muhal playing solo – in beautifully warm spiritual tones that are very different from his playing on many other albums from the time. The work is wonderfully introspective, showing a whole new side to Abrams' genius – the sensitive, contemplative keyboardist who occasionally emerges during some of Abrams' larger group sessions, but who usually gets pushed back in the fray of larger instrumental interplay. The whole album's extremely beautiful, and it's darn near impossible to find in the original! Tracks include "Afrisong", "The Infinitive Flow", "Hymn To The East", "Roots", and "The New People". CD

Prestige/OJC, 1968. Used ... $9.99
Late 60s greatness from Pepper Adams – an overlooked session that's easily one of his most standout sides of the decade! There's an easygoing swing to the record that's simply wonderful – a well-blown sound that's never too overthought or academic – just pure proof of the sort of inroads that Pepper Adams made with the baritone sax back in the 50s, as he liberated the instrument from its work in the chorus to a fully-voiced solo instrument of its own! The other players certainly help contribute to the magic of the date – and in addition to a rhythm section that includes Tommy Flanagan on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums, the set also features Zoot Sims on tenor, blowing with a tone that's almost as deep as Adams! Titles include "Cindy's Tune", "I've Just Seen Her", "Serenity", "Inanout", "Punjab", "Elusive", and "Verdandi". CD

Cannonball AdderleyAfrican Waltz (plus bonus track) ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1961. Used ... $6.99
Pretty darn hip stuff – and with some great soloing by Cannonball! The record features Adderley's alto fronting a large group conducted by Ernie Wilkins, and featuring a host of hip players like Melba Liston, Oliver Nelson, Jerome Richardson, Ray Barretto, Sam Jones, and Wynton Kelly. The title track is a beautiful reading of Galt MacDermott's "African Waltz" – and other tracks include "Blue Brass Groove", "Something Different", "The Uptown", and "Letter From Home". Wilkins outdoes himself on this one, really providing some strong swinging arrangements that work well with the complicated groove of the project – and in a way, the record feels more like Randy Weston or Melba Liston's at the helm. CD also features the bonus track "This Here". CD

Blue Note, 1958. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
A landmark album – even if it was the only session that Cannonball Adderley ever cut for Blue Note! The album was recorded at a time when Adderley was working with Miles Davis – and as such, the session features a group that includes Miles, blowing trumpet in a cool tone that's a perfect offset to Cannonball's more soulful style on alto sax – also different than the sound of his brother Nat, who was Adderley's more frequent partner on records. The rest of the group includes Hank Jones on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Art Blakey on drums – and like John Coltrane's Blue Train, the record's more of an "special session" than the usual Blue Note album, but the strength of the players make it one of the more memorable records of its day! Titles include "Somethin' Else", "One For Daddy-O", "Autumn Leaves", "Love For Sale", and a nice moody take on "Dancing In The Dark". LP, Vinyl record album

Nat's trumpet is backed up by the "big sax section" here – a trio of reed players that includes Yusef Lateef, Jimmy Heath, and Charlie Rouse, plus some additional baritone work by Tate Houston. The groove's pretty swinging – kind of in the mode of early work with Cannonball Adderley in that it's not as "in the pocket" soul jazz wise, but still quite strong overall. Heath and Jimmy Jones did the arrangements, and the rhythm section features Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones, and Jimmy Cobb. Tracks include "Tadd", "The Old Country", "Chordnation", and "ESP". Sunny had been issuing lots of his own records back home in Nigeria – but this set has the juju master working in London, with really fantastic production that pushes his sound in really great ways – echoey waves of basslines and percussion, subtle but powerful vocals, and percolating guitar that takes on a whole new sonic sensibility in the setting! There's a richness to the texture that's amazing – almost as if Brian Eno produced – and titles include "Synchro Feelings Ilako", "Mo Ti Mo", "Penkele", "Maajo", "Synchro System", "E Saiye Re", "Tolongo", "E Wele", and "Synchro Reprise". Next up is Aura – a crucial record in the early days of the global scene in the 80s – a set that lifts the music of King Sunny Ade from its roots in Nigeria, and mixes it up with some fresh elements that really open things up for a world's worth of ears! The approach isn't commercial – at least not in the modes of the later world music years – but there's occasional elements that echo the beat culture rising up in New York and London, mixed with the warmer sounds that were always at Sunny's music – especially that way of making the acoustic percussion and basslines come together in flowing waves of completely sublime sound! All tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Gboromiro", "Oremi", "Ire", "Iro", "Ogunja", and "Ase". CD

Laurel Aitken & OthersSkinhead Train – Complete Singles Collection 1969/1970 (5CD set) ... CD
Pressure Drop (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 5CD set ... $32.99
An insanely huge amount of work from British rocksteady legend Laurel Aitken – especially when you consider that this set of 138 tracks was issued in the short space of just two years! In truth, Laurel's not the lead artist on all the cuts, but he had something to do with all of them – either as a singer, songwriter, producer, or other creative force – all bringing to a variety of UK labels the experience he'd build up as a formative member on the growing scene in Kingston! The work throughout is marked with the wit that always made Aitken such a standout, and which also links his contributions to Jamaican music with larger Caribbean culture – but never in the watered-down style of his later revival work. The scope of music is amazing, and in addition to dozens of tracks recorded under his own name, the package features cuts by The Gruvy Beats, The Classics, Inner Mind, Winston Groovy, Sonny Binns & The Rudies, Tiger, King Horror, Pama Dice, The Cimarons, Trevor Lloyd, Dice & Cummie, Dice The Boss, and others. AkageraSerpente ... CD
Prado (France), 2019. New Copy ... $13.99
A really great idea for a trio, and one that sounds unlike anything else we've ever heard – given that the music is a mix of percussion, bass trombone, and a mix of vibes and marimba! The tracks are all pretty spare, and do a great job of building up the sound – maybe with less of the swing than you'd expect, but certainly a rhythmic core that really holds the sonic elements together – and which also has some occasional global currents that make for an even more evocative mix in the music! The group features David Georgelet on drums and percussion, Stephane Montigny on bass trombone, and Benoit Lavolee on vibes and marimba – and titles include "Jamal", "Msafara", "Harmattan", "Saille", "Bayou", "Serpente", "Mures Mures", and "Scarabee". Toshiko AkiyoshiKogun (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $18.99
Brilliantly bold work from pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi – an artist who's really coming into her own for the 70s – stepping out in a big band format that would win her a wide new audience on both sides of the Pacific! The album's one of the first to feature the ensemble co-led with husband Lew Tabackin – a group that features strong work from American players who include Dick Spencer and Gary Foster on alto saxes, Tabackin and Tom Peterson on tenor, Bill Perkins on baritone, Bobby Shew and Don Rader on trumpets, and Charles Loper and Jim Sawyer on trombones. The horns are only part of the picture, though – as the inventive writing and arranging from Akiyoshi is what really makes the album great – a strong sense of painting with sound, while still keeping things swinging – really unlocking all the best elements that had been opened up for larger ensembles in the previous few years. The set features all original tracks that include "Kogun", "American Ballad", "Henpecked Old Man", "Elegy", and "Memory". CD

✨✧ Monty AlexanderLive At The Cully Select Jazz Festival 1991 ... CD
Limetree/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1991. New Copy ... $13.99
Great later work from Monty Alexander – a record from a time when he maybe didn't have some of the funk or gimmicks of his earlier albums, but which also shows this mature command of the keyboard that Alexander never had on the piano in his youth! The date is one of those well-recorded trio sessions by the Limetree label – an imprint that always seemed to bring out the best in pianists – and Monty's group here features Lynn Seaton on bass and Duffy Jackson on drums – players who step back at all the right points to allow Alexander to feel a majestic flow on the piano, then come in and swing with some help from percussionist Steve Grier as well. Titles include "Crying", "Caribbean Circle", "Look Up", "Renewal", "The River", and "Maybe September". CD

AmbianceInto A New Journey ... CD
Da Mon/BBE (UK), 1982. New Copy Gatefold ... $14.99 18.99
A really beautiful record from the Ambiance ensemble – a group led by reedman Daoud Abubakar Balewa – a musician with the same underground prominence as Plunky Nakabinde and Idris Ackamoor during the same generation! Like both of those artists, Daoud has a way of moving effortlessly between spiritual jazz and more soul-based styles – heard here on one of his standout records from the early 80s, which blends his own work on a variety of saxes with nicely flowing accompaniment on piano, percussion, guitars, and a slight touch of Fender Rhodes – mostly instrumental, but with a few vocal moments from time to time! The vibe is late spiritual jazz – not as tightly tied to Coltrane-based modes, and nicely finding its own space in the universe – on titles that include "Eastwind", "Something Better", "Into A New Journey", and "The Arrival" – plus versions of "Black Narcissus", "500 Miles", and "Windows". ✨✧ Gene AmmonsBig Sound ... LP
Prestige, Mid 50s. Very Good ... $39.99
Classic Jug, playing in a laidback open-ended blowing session, with other strong Prestige players – like Coltrane, Jerome Richardson, Paul Quinichette, Art Taylor, and Mal Waldron, who always seems to be the driving force between most Prestige sides like this. The album has only 4 tracks, and they're all long and nice and soulful. The titles are "Blue Hymn", "The Real McCoy", "Cheek To Cheek", and "That's All". LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Ammons & Sonny StittDig Him (aka We'll Be Together Again) ... LP
Argo, 1961. Very Good ... $7.99
Nothing fancy – but some great straight-ahead blowing from Stitt and Jug! The album's a quintet session, with John Houston piano, Buster Williams bass, and George Brown drums providing all the rhythm. But the real focus is on the twin-sax frontline – with Sitt taking up the alto on a few numbers, but mostly blowing tenor head to head with Jug. Recorded in 1961 during Jug's great year of contract-breaking – and issued later in the 60s by Prestige under a different title. Titles include "A Mess", "Water Jug", "New Blues Up & Down", "Red Sails In The Sunset", and "A Pair Of Red Pants". LP, Vinyl record album

Amp FiddlerAfro Strut (UK version) ... CD
Genuine (UK), 2006. Used ... $6.99
We loved Amp Fiddler tremendously on his debut, but here he's really blowing us out of the water – emerging as one of the brightest new soul stars of the 21st Century, with a depth of sound that's greater than we ever would have expected! Fiddler stretches way beyond his Detroit roots on this one – and shakes off some of the overdone cosmic modes to go for a warmer soul sound that's really amazing – a groove that only an elite few can do this well! Part of the strength of the set is an expanded sound that goes way past keyboards and beats – a groove that introduces more jazzy elements than before, and which features contributions from a great array of funky talents both old and young – including Bluey, Tony Allen, Wendell Harrison, Raphael Saadiq, Gary Shider, and Stephanie McKay! The vocals are great too – more classically styled and well thought-out – performed with a confidence that's well-earned, and which might almost push this record into the mainstream. Titles include "Faith", "If I Don't", "Empower", "Find My Way", "Right Where You Are", "I Need You", "You Could Be Mine", "Seven Mile", "Funky Monday", and "Hustle". CD

Also present is Roy Brewster, the great, under-recorded LA valve trombonist, whose playing here gives the session a nice round bottom. 5 long cuts, with earthy, bluesy solos, and a very swinging rhythm section. Titles include "Searchin", "Blues Message", "This Is The Blues", and "Goin Down, Catch Me A Woman". LP, Vinyl record album

Fred AndersonFred Anderson Quartet – Live Vol 5 ... CD
FPE, 1994. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
A fantastic live document of the genius of Chicago tenorist Fred Anderson – captured here with an excellent group that soar with the same boundless energy as their leader! Anderson is blowing at his very own Velvet Lounge club on the south side of the city – but he's hardly laidback and relaxed – as the energy here is beautifully tight, even as the songs are very freewheeling and stretched out – driven with great rhythm work by Tatsu Aoki on bass and Hamid Drake on drums, and topped with tremendous trumpet from guest Toshinori Kondo, who also adds in some great electronics too! Anderson is amazing – very much at that level that made him one of the great under-discovered giants on the Chicago scene, finally getting attention during this period of his career – and beautifully brought to life again on this recording that finally sees release twenty five years after its recording. Titles include "Analog Breakdown", "Era Of Rocks", and "Probability Distribution". CD

The first new studio recording by tenorist Fred Anderson since 1980 – and a set that shows just how much he'd grown in the intervening years! Here, Fred's newly alive with a younger Chicago group – a great quartet with Jim Baker on piano, Harrison Baker on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums – all players openly fluid to move with Anderson from swinging passages to freer ones – a beautiful balance of soul and experimentation, captured in a way that maybe links Fred more closely to Von Freeman than any other record in his career – yet which still captures all the AACM vitality in his music too. ✨✧ Laurie AndersonBig Science ... LP
Warner/Nonesuch, 1982. New Copy (reissue)... On April 9, 2021
One of the greatest albums to come from the New York underground of the early 80s – even if it was a relatively big "hit" on a major label! Laurie Anderson is in perfect form here – drawing on a strong tradition of avant garde performance, but without any of the indulgences that would mire down performance art in years to come. Instead, she's got a clean, clear style that's simply amazing – spoken passages that are poetic and pointed, but which also have a slight undercurrent of wit – a charming quality that never takes itself too seriously, even when the sounds and styles are somewhat dark. Instrumentation includes some great rhythm passages from David Van Tieghem, plus surprising performances from Rufus Harley on bagpipes and George Lewis on trombone. Titles include "From The Air", "Big Science", "O Superman", "Born Never Asked", "Walking & Falling", "Example #22", "Let X = X", and "It Tango". LP, Vinyl record album

Pier AngeliItalia ... LP
Roulette, 1959. Very Good ... $8.99
The debut album from Pier Angeli – equally known for her acting ability as well as her singing – and working here in a swinging late 50s American take on the sound of Italian pop! Pier was married to singer Vic Damone, and while his style's perhaps a bit fuller and more emotive than hers, there's a good degree of comparison – as Pier's working here to please the imagined Italy of the American audiences in the years when things settled down after World War 2 – singing in Italian throughout to a nice set of backings from Hugo & Luigi. Most of the album's in a lush, romantic mode that's in keeping with other Roulette vocal sessions of the late 50s – save for the fact that the language is Italian, not English! Titles include "Volare", "Anema E Core", "Nu Quarto E Luna", "Torero", "Arrividerci Roma", and "Suvenir D'Italie". LP, Vinyl record album

Clean Feed (Portugal), 2019. New Copy ... $13.99
A fantastic group that just seems to get better and better each time we hear them – one comprised of some of our favorite Swedish avant players of the past decade or two – coming together here in a way that's even greater than the sum of its parts! There's a bold energy to the group that seems to take off from the Charles Mingus ensembles of the late 50s and early 60s – that balance of unified message and individual voices – painterly sometimes, swinging at others – with work from Johan Berthling on bass, Magnus Broo on trumpet, Eirik Hegdal on baritone, Goran Kajfes on cornet, Martin Kuchen on alto and tenor, Mattias Stahl on vibes, Andreas Werliin on drums, Alexander Zethson on piano, and Mats Aleklint on trombone. There's a richness here that's undeniable, and which puts these guys in instant-classic territory – at least for avant jazz – on titles that include "Beyond Us", "Mali", "Against The Permanent Revolution", "Samar & The Egyptian Winter", and "U(n)happiez Marriages". Eric Burdon & The AnimalsWhen I Was Young – The MGM Recordings 1967/1968 (Winds Of Change/Twain Shall Meet/Everyone Of Us/Love Is/bonus tracks) (5CD set) ... CD
MGM/Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 5CD ... $44.99
A fantastic package of work from The Animals – all their great second chapter albums for MGM, offered up here with bonus tracks too! First up is Winds Of Change, presented in both stereo and mono mixes – one of The Animals' most psychedelic outings ever – and also a bit funky at times too! Production by Tom Wilson is really great – echoey at most moments, with a kind of "flash" and shimmer around the drums that really spaces things out, and almost gives a Velvets sort of feel to the proceedings. The group's bluesier roots are still in place at times – but these have also been tripped-out and abstracted too, in modes that are a few years ahead of other blues rock combos on the rise. Titles include "It's All Meat", "Winds Of Change", "Poem By The Sea", "Yes I Am Experienced", "Hotel Hell", "San Franciscan Nights", and "Man Woman". Next is Twain Shall Meet – a set that's not as tripped-out as some of their other late 60s work, and which almost starts to show Eric Burdon's rising love of soul and funk! The sound is still pretty rockish overall – but there's some great use of bass rumbling at the bottom – bringing up a rumbling quality that fits nicely with Burdon's somewhat bleak presentation of the lyrics at various points. Production by Tom Wilson almost has a raspy, lo-fi sort of feel – different than the bluesier roots of the group, and almost a precursor of indie work in decades to come! Titles include the classic "Sky Pilot", plus "Monterey", "Just The Thought", "Closer To The Truth", "No Self Pity", "Orange & Red Beams", and "We Love You Lil". Every One Of Us is a real gem from The Animals' overlooked late 60s years on MGM – a time when the group were easily making some of the most inventive music on the label! The styles here are even wider than before – definitely an attempt to showcase "every one of us" that made up the group – in a blend of spacey sounds, gentle folksy moments, and some of the rougher tones of previous MGM records. Many titles were written only by Burdon – a bit of a change from before – and showcase an increased use of acoustic guitar alongside his bleak vocals. Titles include "The Immigrant Lad", "Year Of The Guru", "Serenade To A Sweet Lady", "White Houses", "New York 1963/America 1968", and "Uppers & Downers". Next is Love Is – a fantastic double-length set from The Animals – recorded in LA in the late 60s, and with plenty of great Sunset Strip influences in the mix! The band here is different than before – with Zoot Money handling both organ and piano, plus a bit of vocals, and Andy Summers joining in on guitar – and production is by the group itself, who shake off some of the trippier styles of previous records, and almost go for a "live in studio" sort of sound! There's a confluence of styles here that's really great – some of the blues of the group's roots, bits of Eric Burdon's growing love of soul, and some fuzzier touches as well. Some tracks are quite long jams, and titles include "Gemini", "Madman", "As The Years Go Passing By", "To Love Somebody", and "I'm An Animal". Bonus tracks include "Monterey (mono single)", "White Houses (single stereo)", "Anything (single)", "Gratefully Dead", "Ain't That So", "When I was Young", "A Girl Named Sandoz", "River Deep Mountain High (single stereo)", and "Sky Pilot (parts 1 & 2)", CD

Anteloper (Jaimie Branch & Jason Nazary)Tour Beats Vol 1 ... LP
International Anthem, 2020. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
Mindblowing sounds from Anteloper – a great side project from trumpeter Jaimie Branch, and one that lets her open up with lots of the more electronic sides of her spirit! The set's a collaboration with Jason Nazary – who adds in acoustic drums plus a host of electronics and effects – echoed by Branch, who blows her usual strong lead on trumpet upfront, but also works electronic magic too – so that the duo are creating in the best mix of live instrumentation, processing, and editing that have made the International Anthem label such a powerhouse in new waves of jazz in recent years. The work's not unlike some of the recent projects of trumpeter Rob Mazurek – who, not surprisingly, provides notes on the record – which includes the tracks "Bubble Under", "Isotope 420", "Soledad Sabateur", and "Radar Radio". AntibalasWhere The Gods Are At Peace ... LP
Daptone, 2017. New Copy ... $14.99 17.98
Maybe the most searing album we've ever heard from Antibalas – a set that's completely on fire from the very first note, both musically and politically – and which burns with an intensity that seems to blow away all their previous music! Make no mistake, we've always loved these guys – but this time around, there's an urgency that really grabs us – maybe because of the political climate in which the set was recorded, or maybe just because these guys always keep growing and maturing, where so many other similar combos are just content to stick in the same territory. The lead vocals by Duke Amayo are incredible – with a righteous power that demands to be heard – and the horns are more creative and colorful than ever, with some fantastic solos on the album's very long tracks. And of course, the grooves are great – that blend of riffing guitars and percussion that Antibalas have updated from 70s Afro Funk – on titles that include the three-part "Tombstown" suite, plus "Hook & Crook" and "Gold Rush". Antonio Carlos & JocafiLouvado Seja ... CD
RCA (Brazil), 1977. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A classic batch of funky samba tracks by this sublime 70s duo! Antonio Carlos and Jocafi transformed the sound of Brazilian music during the 70s – singing together on most recordings to create a spacious counterpoint style of vocals, which was often produced with slight electricity in the mix, flanging out the vocals to meet the funkiness of the rhythms, in a tightly dancing mode that quickly made them one of the best groups of the Samba Soul era! This 1977 set has a sweetly soulful edge that shows them growing a bit from earlier albums – and titles include "Cordel", "Homem e Homem", "Opus 2", "Rey Oxossi", and "Sossega Leao". CD
