Kidd Jordan/Joel Futterman/William Parker/Hamid DrakeTribute To Alvin Fielder – Live At Vision Festival 24 ... CD
Mahakala, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
A mighty heavy group – paying tribute to the late drummer Alvin Fiedler – working with the kind of fierce improvisation that Fiedler would have really loved! Tenorist Kidd Jordan was a frequent musical partner of Alvin on record – and the group here really recreates some of the intensity they could deliver together – with Hamid Drake on drums and percussion, Joel Futterman on piano, and William Parker on bass – soaring out beautifully on one extended improvisation that takes up the entire record! Futterman is ferocious on piano, really matching the searing sounds that come from Jordan's horn – as he blows with a legacy of bold, spontaneous creation that almost takes us back to the years of ESP Records or BYG/Actuel. Thollem McDonas/William Parker/Nels ClineGowanus Sessions 2 ... CD
ESP, 2019. New Copy ... $8.99
Moody sounds from this reunited trio – Thollem McDonas on piano, William Parker on bass, and Nels Cline on guitar and effects – coming together here in a session that, we think, was recorded at the same time as their previous Gowanus album! As before, the music is maybe heavier in territory that we know from Cline – open, spacious, and with lots of sonic resonance between the individual elements – particularly the jagged sounds of the piano and the more subtle shadings of the guitar – but still at a level that makes Parker's bass a crucial grounding for the whole performance. The set features two long tracks – "Life In The World" and "World In A Life". CD

William ParkerI Plan To Stay A Believer – The Inside Songs Of Curtis Mayfield ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2010. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
A really unusual album from bassist William Parker – an artist whose musical world is usually quite far from the 70s soul of Curtis Mayfield – even though both Mayfield and Parker are pretty darn righteous individuals! Yet here, Curtis and William come together in a stunning way – as Parker reworks classic Mayfield songs, and transforms them into fantastic vehicles for spiritual jazz expression! The group has a warmly collaborative vibe, and energy that feels like some lost indie jazz project from the 70s – all held together by Parker's bold acoustic bass and masterful leadership – in a lineup that includes vocals from Leena Conquest, piano from Dave Burrell, saxes and flute from Sabir Mateen, tenor and soprano from Darryl Foster, trumpet from Lewis Barnes, drums from Hamid Drake, and poetry and voice from Amari Baraka. With a lineup like that, you can already guess the vibe – and we can promise that the whole is even better than you might have hoped! Titles include "I Plan To Stay A Believer", "If There's A Hell Below", "This Is My Country", "People Get Ready/The Inside Song", "It's Alright", "Freddie's Dead", "New World Order", and a great 17 minute take on "We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue". William ParkerVoices Fall From The Sky (3CD set) ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2018. New Copy 3CD ... $14.99 29.98
A really wonderful collection of music from the legendary bassist William Parker – and one that finally brings a light to an under-illuminated side of his talents – his work with different singers over his long and creative career, all collected together here in a great 3CD set! Make no mistake – this isn't a "best of", or anything like that – as a good deal of music appears here for the first time ever, and lots more of the tracks are from albums that have long vanished from the record racks – which makes the whole thing almost like a new album from Parker overall. Players include Parker on bass, Yuko Fujiyama and Eri Yamamoto on piano, Rob Brown on alto, Steve Swell on trombone, and a number of others – including nearly a full disc with music by Parker's Orchestra – and as you'd imagine, the mood and style varies a bit from track to track, but is all wonderfully tied together by Parker's detailed notes inside. Singers include Leena conquest, Ernie Odom, Sangeeta Bandyopadhyay, Lisa Skolov, Ellen Christi, Mola Sylla, Andrea Wolper, Fay Victor, and Omar Payano – and the set is an incredible testimony to Parker's great talents. Ivo Perelman/Matthew Shipp/William Parker/Bobby KappIneffable Joy ... CD
ESP, 2019. New Copy ... $8.99
One of the best showcases we've heard for the tenor sax work of Ivo Perelman in years – an open, blue-tinged performance that seems to open up his horn with a lot more soul than we remember! Of course, some of the credit certainly goes to the other partners on the date – Matthew Shipp on piano, William Parker on bass, and Bobby Kapp on drums – a lineup that benefits from the long, lovely association between Shipp and Parker, who have returned to some tremendous new heights in recent years – and whose work alone on the record is more than enough to win us over. Perelman comes as maybe a bit of icing on the cake – but of the sweetest variety – on titles that include "Bliss", "Ebullience", "Rejoicing", "Elation", "Ecstasy", and "Exuberance" – all titles that definitely describe the performance! One of those records that just makes us say "wow" right from the very first note – a perfect showcase for all musicians involved, and a really mighty meeting of the creative minds! We've really loved the strong return to form that Matthew Shipp has given us on piano in recent years – and of course, the basswork of William Parker is always tremendous – but they both somehow rise even more to the top alongside the drums of Gerald Cleaver and tenor, trumpet, and flute of Daniel Carter – in a session that's wonderfully spiritual, very rhythmic, and often quite straight at times! There's a balance between the avant impulses of the players and the collective action of the group – almost recalling the loft jazz years, but more contemporarily righteous too – on titles that include "Majestic Travel Agency", "Scintillate", and "Ear-Regularities". ✨✧ Billy Bang & William ParkerMedicine Buddha ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful work from two players who've just gotten better and better over the decades – both musicians who've made a huge impression from the late 70s onward, but who also continue to grow and refine their ideas as the years go on! This set features beautiful duets recorded at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York, in 2009 – with Bang on violin and thumb piano, and William Parker on bass, plus a bit of shakuhashi and dousn gouni as well. Both players handle strings at a level that's far different than most of their contemporaries or influences – and have this sublimely spiritual style that's often a bit exotic too – but never in the sort of easier ways of Bang's Vietnam-related projects. Instead there's a very freely creative spirit as both players come together – finding a unique voice that's extremely moving, and never too heavy-handed – a huge reminder of why we love them both so much. Titles include "Bronx Aborigines", "Eternal Planet", "Buddha's Joy", "Medicine Buddha", and "Sky Song". CD

✨✧ William Parker/In Order To SurviveLive/Shapeshifter ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2019. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
William Parker works here with his excellent In Order To Survive quartet – a fantastic lineup that features Rob Brown on alto sax, Cooper-Moore on piano, and Hamid Drake on drums – a very fluid, very well-matched group who are able to follow Parker in his farthest musical explorations! Tracks are all long, and relatively free – but as with Parker's bass over the decades, there's always this sense of inherent logic that comes through – possibly his strong spirit which unites the players, even indirectly – but also just a proud presence that never seems to let us down. The music was all recorded live on a single night at Shapeshifter Lab in Brooklyn – and titles include "Demons Lining The Halls Of Justice", "Eternity", "In Order To Survive", "Newark", and the long "Eternal Is The Voice Of Love" suite. Peter Brotzmann Chicago TentetStone/Water ... CD
Okka Disk, 1999. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
Fantastic live material from a very unique group – the instantly-legendary meeting of reedman Peter Brotzmann with the leading lights of the Chicago avant jazz scene in the 90s – brought together into a tremendous tentet that's maybe even better than the sum of its parts! The group features Brotzmann on tenor and clarinet, Ken Vandermark on tenor and bass clarinet, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Fred Lomberg-Holm on cello and violin, Michael Zerang and Hamid Drake on drums, Kent Kessler on bass – and "honorary Chicagoan" Mats Gustafsson on tenor and flutophone, plus Toshinori Kondo on trumpet and electronics, and William Parker on bass. Phew, that's one heck of a lineup – the kind that rivals some of the European or British improvising ensembles of decades past – but one that has its own very specific flavor, and a sound that's brimming over with youth – so much so that the non-Chicago guests really seem to gain inspiration from the core. This Okka disc set captures the band live at the 16th Victoriaville Festival in 1999. CD

Peter Brotzmann Chicago Tentet + 2Short Visit To Nowhere ... CD
Okka Disk, 2002. New Copy ... $9.99
A set that's a bit of a companion to the Brotzmann Chicago Tentet album Broken English – as it was recorded with the same lineup, on the same days – but a record that's also got a very different vibe of its own, thanks to the never-ending imagination of all the members of the group! As on the afore-mentioned record, the group here is expanded by two key guests – bassist William Parker and trumpeter Roy Campbell – east coast heavyweights brought in to an already great lineup that features reeds from Peter Brotzmann, Mars Williams, Mats Gustafsson, and Ken Vandermark – plus Joe McPhee on trumpet and valve trombone, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Kent Kessler on bass, Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello and violin, and both Michael Zerang and Hamid Drake on drums. Yet even with the two guests musicians, the Tentet manages to really feel the space around each individual musician in the lineup – working with amazing sensitivity, instead of overdone bombastic energy – creating sounds of chance and change on titles that include "Lightbox", "Short Visit To Nowhere", "Ellington", and "Hold That Thought". The group's led by Jerome Cooper on drums, balaphone, and other percussion – and features Joseph Jarman on tenor and flute, William Parker on bass, Jason Hwang on violin, and Thurman Barker on drums – all working together in ways that are kind of an evolution of the loft jazz style – handled with a lot more thoughtful composition on the part of Cooper, and executed in ways that really have the players thinking about each others' contributions – coming up with these vivid sonic elements in the process, and really holding our attention in the way they instruments take fire from each other. The tunes instantly explode with color and life – hitting a rich spirit that marks Piotr as a musician we're going to keep our eye on in coming years – with other musicians who include Maciej Obara on alto, Adam Pindur on soprano, Pawel Niewiadomski on trombone, Gerard Lebik on tenor, and Dominik Wania on piano. The lineup features Koichi Matsukaze on alto – a player who can blow both straight and free – alongside Shoji Aketagawa on piano, Koichi Yamazaki on bass, and Takashi Miyasaka on drums. The set begins with a long-spun take on "Impressions" that's really wonderful, then slides into a very avant take on "I Love You", before hitting a nice mix of edgey, soulful modes on "Imba". CD

The sound here is spare and textural – very much in the ECM mode, and often surprisingly spare, despite the largeness of the group. Mitchell's on soprano, alto, tenor, and flute – stepping slowly alongside more tightly arranged horn passages for most of the set. Vocalist Fay Victor joins the wonderful group Other Dimensions In Music – for a performance that really helps deepen the sound and knock the whole thing out of the park! Make no mistake, we already love the instrumental side of the group – Roy Campbell on trumpets and other instruments, Daniel Carter on saxes and flute, William Parker on bass, and Charles Downs on drums and percussion – all shifting instruments, and working together in a mode that's very strongly in a legacy that runs from the AACM through the loft jazz generation! But the presence of Victor's voice really adds a whole new layer – contributions from various texts, which are spoken and sung, but in ways that are as unconventional as the music that Campbell and Carter make on their horns. Titles include "An Open Letter", "We Is We Trini", "Saltfish Refried", "Three Friends Advised", "Kitch Goes Home", and "John Gilman Wants Tobacco". CD

Despite the setting, though, the record's a great one – played with all the fire and dynamism of some of Taylor's indie work from the same stretch – and carved out in a way that has some shorter tracks on the showcase, which makes for a nice change from the album-length performances of some of Cecil's other sets. The trio features Gregg Bendian on percussion and William Parker on bass – and both players vocalize a bit with Cecil at moments on the record. At times, the style is very much in a mode that you might expect from the three older legends – almost an update of an older loft jazz approach at times – but there are warmer currents at other moments, particularly when Parker's piano dominates a bit more – really providing a great setting for all involved, as things more from freer passages to moments of bolder composition with more of an angular swing. Brown and Campbell often blow together on the heads, then break out in rich-voiced solos of their own – and in Rob plays both alto sax and flute on the record. Sax great David S Ware leading a masterful trio featuring William Parker on bass and Warren Smith on drums – live at NYC's Vision Festival in 2010, plus some incendiary 2009 studio outtakes from the too brief period these three were in action together! Amazingly, given how deft their interplay is throughout these recordings, the trio only came together a few times, resulting in the energetic 3 part suite that makes up the first half, balanced out by outtakes from their Onecept studio sessions that make up the rest. Excellent work we're happy is finally seeing release! Includes "Vision Suite 2010" (Parts 1, 2 & 3), "Kama", "Virtue", "Bodhisattva" and "Gnavah". CD

✨✧ David S WareTheatre Garonne 2008 ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2008. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic live set from the great David S Ware – recorded at a key point in his career, when he was moving away from his longtime work with Matthew Shipp on piano, and embracing a new group with Joe Morris on guitar! Morris is wonderful here – really at his best, and driven on by the presence of Ware, bassist William Parker, and drummer Warren Smith – to levels that make his music completely essential, and every bit as intense as Ware on the tenor saxophone! The pairing is completely sublime – even more powerful on record than you can imagine – and the never-issued concert performance features the long tracks "Durga", "Reflection", "Crossing Samsara", and "Namah". ✨✧ Miles DavisFirst Miles ... CD
Savoy (Japan), Mid 40s. Used ... $4.99
The title gets it right – as these recordings are definitely some of the first-ever by Miles Davis – some done under his own name, some as a key sideman with other artists! The first 8 cuts feature Davis with group of his own, featuring his famous boss of the time, Charlie Parker, on alto sax – plus John Lewis on piano and Max Roach on drums. Most tracks have a few versions, and titles include "Half Nelson", "Little Willie Leaps", "Milestones", and "Sippin At Bells". Next are 7 more tracks done on sessions that feature vocalist Rubberlegs Williams and reedman Herbie Fields – tunes that include "That's The Stuff You Gotta Watch", "Pointless Mama Blues", and "Bring It On Home". Last up is a bonus Charlie Parker tune – a classic 1945 recording of "Now's The Time", with Miles on trumpet. CD

VariousBrunswick Singles Collection – Brothers Of Soul ... CD
Brunswick/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $13.99
Majestic male soul from Brunswick Records – the label who recorded some of the best material ever from singers like Gene Chandler and Jackie Wilson, and who also gave lots of other singers a great shot too! This set moves way past obvious Brunswick hits, and includes loads of lesser-known singles that are totally great – some funky, some laidback, and lots of them very very groovy – in that totally hip Chicago soul mode that Brunswick did so well. There's a number of artists here who only recorded briefly for Brunswick, before hitting fame elsewhere – and others who are remembered for the few rare gems they left behind at the label – all brought together here in a wonderful 25 track set. There's plenty of surprises throughout – and titles include "Doing The Feeling" by Alvin Cash, "Contract On Your Love" by Chuck Bernard, "I'll Bet You" by Billy Butler, "Sweet Sweet Revenge" by Alvin Valentine, "Hold On" by Marvin Smith, "This Melody Is For My Baby" by Ben Monroe, "Sweet Temptation" by Isaac Hayes, "Wrapped Up In Your Warm & Tender Love" by Richard Parker, "A Mean Thing" by Donald Height, "Just A Little Misunderstanding" by Johnny Williams, "You Got Me Walking" by Cicero Blake, "Once You Fall In Love" by Eddie Mcloyd, "Just A Thing Called Love" by John Parker, and "You Are" by Bobby Reed. ✨✧ Lennie NiehausLennie Niehaus Vol 4 – The Quintets & Strings ... LP
Contemporary, 1955. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sublime work from this oft-overlooked alto player – a wonderful album that features Lennie playing in quintets with Bill Perkins, Bob Gordon, Stu Williamson, and Hampton Hawes – plus added string quartet backings on most of the tunes – making for a shimmering sound that's really magical! The album has traces of Charlie Parker's work with strings – in that Lennie's alto soars over the top of the arrangements with a mellifluous glide and incredible precision, never getting too buried in the arrangements, and striking out with more soul than we've heard on some of his smaller combo records. Titles include "All The Things You Are", "Cross Walk", "Troubled Waters", "Rondo", "Star Eyes", and "Lens". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Cecil PayneBird Gets The Worm ... LP
Muse, 1976. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Baritonist Cecil Payne cut very few albums as a leader – but nearly all of them are great! A great example is this obscure mid 70s set – a back-to-basics quintet side that features Tom Harrell on trumpet, Duke Jordan on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Al Foster on drums – all backing up Payne as he cuts deft lines on baritone and flute, handling both horns with a grace and dexterity that's quite surprising, given the range of sounds he's got to muster. Includes versions of the Charlie Parker tunes "Constellation", "Ko Ko", and "Bird Get The Worm", plus Neal Hefti's "Repetition". LP, Vinyl record album

Jeff ParkerSuite For Max Brown ... CD
International Anthem/Nonesuch, 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
Mindblowing music from Jeff Parker – sounds that we always knew were part of his core, but which have maybe taken most of his career to emerge! This album follows beautifully from Jeff's previous album for International Anthem – and like that one, it's an explosion of new and old ideas at once – jazz elements with soul currents, all put together with a complexity that lives up to Parker's long legacy in music, but which also has an organic appeal that makes the whole thing come together with effortless ease! There's plenty of sophistication in the sound, but it also sneaks in with lots of grooves that Jeff never had before – including some funky currents that come from Parker's work on keyboards, drums, and samples in addition to his usual guitar – and added drums from Jamire Williams and Makaya McCraven. Titles include "Lydian Etc", "Build A Nest", "Del Rio", "3 For L", "Fusion Swirl", "After The Rain", and "Max Brown". CD

Carmen LundyCode Noir ... CD
Afrasia, 2017. New Copy ... $14.99 16.98
Fantastic work from Carmen Lundy – one of our favorite jazz singers of all time, and an artist who keeps on giving us her best as the years go on! This album's definitely some of Carmen's best – as it features the singer working with a wonderful group that includes Jeff Parker on guitar, Patrice Rushen on piano, Ben Williams on bass, and Kendrick Scott on drums – a tight core combo who really find a way to push Lundy's energy even more than usual – while Carmen herself handles other keyboards with her vocals, and serves especially righteous material! There's a bit more politics here than on previous records – perfect for the spirit of the moment – but Carmen also mixes a lot of warmth and love into her music as well. Titles include "Black & Blues", "Afterglow", "Whatever It Takes", "I Keep Falling", "The Island The Sea & You", "Have A Little Faith", and "Another Chance". CD

El (UK), 1940s/1950s/1960s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
The title's a reference to a Beatles' song – and the set brings together a range of classical and other styles of music that had a huge influence on the 60s pop scene – a number of sources that you'll definitely recognize in later work by the Fab Four, plus lots more important work as well!
