Daniel Carter/Matthew Shipp/William Parker/Gerald CleaverWelcome Adventure Vol 1 ... CD
577, 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 16.99
One of those records that just makes us say "wow" right from the very first note – a perfect showcase for all musicians involved, and a really mighty meeting of the creative minds! We've really loved the strong return to form that Matthew Shipp has given us on piano in recent years – and of course, the basswork of William Parker is always tremendous – but they both somehow rise even more to the top alongside the drums of Gerald Cleaver and tenor, trumpet, and flute of Daniel Carter – in a session that's wonderfully spiritual, very rhythmic, and often quite straight at times! There's a balance between the avant impulses of the players and the collective action of the group – almost recalling the loft jazz years, but more contemporarily righteous too – on titles that include "Majestic Travel Agency", "Scintillate", and "Ear-Regularities". That's a pretty enticing title, and the record's got a pretty enticing sound as well – fantastic long-spun lines from the trio of Matthew Shipp on piano, William Parker on bass, and Whit Dickey on drums – all players with a long history together, and a perfectly-matched sound on the record! Shipp is at his most spiritual here – really reveling in that new sense of warmth that's graced his more recent material – a quality that Parker is only happy to support and emphasize, while Dickey proves once again that he can be an incredibly versatile talent on the drum kit – sometimes almost feeling like a different player on each different track on the record. Titles include "Down Void Way", "Nothing & A Thing", "Whirling In The Void", "Village Mothership", and "Nothingness". CD

Hamid Drake/Elaine Mitchener/William Parker/Orphy Robinson/Pat ThomasSome Good News ... CD
OTOroku (UK), 2021. New Copy 2CDs ... $20.99
A pretty amazing setting for this quintet of top-shelf improvisers – artists who find a way to spin things out in a long creative performance that spans almost two hours in length – always finding a way to make our ears smile with a sense of surprise at all the different moments of inspiration! Perhaps the most unique artist here is singer Elaine Mitchener – who has a way of improvising all these non-verbal sounds that come into play strongly with the mad percussive skills of Hamid Drake, and the always-beautiful bass of William Parker. Pat Thomas handles his piano with a balance of sensitivity and strength, and the marimba of Orphy Robinson comes in at moments that seem to explode with fresh color and sound. Both Robinson and Thomas bring in a bit of electronics, and Parker plays a bit of guimbri too – and the set features two very long sections, titled "Put The Breaks On" and "Some Good News". CD

ESP, 2019. New Copy ... $14.99
Moody sounds from this reunited trio – Thollem McDonas on piano, William Parker on bass, and Nels Cline on guitar and effects – coming together here in a session that, we think, was recorded at the same time as their previous Gowanus album! As before, the music is maybe heavier in territory that we know from Cline – open, spacious, and with lots of sonic resonance between the individual elements – particularly the jagged sounds of the piano and the more subtle shadings of the guitar – but still at a level that makes Parker's bass a crucial grounding for the whole performance. The set features two long tracks – "Life In The World" and "World In A Life". LP, Vinyl record album

577, 2021. New Copy ... $16.99
Pianist Matthew Shipp and bassist William Parker are long-running musical partners that you're likely to know well – and here, they join under the leadership of drummer Francisco Mela, a player who's more than able to keep up pace with the improvising giants! Case in point is the album's first long track, "Light Of Mind" – a number that's awash in the kind of dynamic piano work that Matthew Shipp first hurled at the world in his early years, taken at a clip that also has Parker moving faster than usual – a quality that's balanced out nicely by the following shorter track, "Dark Light" – which has William up a bit more in the mix, and working a sense of spare magic that's wonderful! All three players brew together in a very heady way on the long "Infinite Consciousness", which concludes the record – a performance that has us wondering if the three have more to give us in the near future. A strong trio set from guitarist Joe Morris, bassist William Parker and drummer Gerald Cleaver – their first together – and it's an exciting one! Recorded live at The Stone, in NYC , it includes a pair of great 25+ minute pieces – "Exosphere" and "Thermosphere – plus the shorter, but plenty spacious Troposphere" and "Mesosphere". It's great stuff! It's all about the free trio dynamic here. Each player asserts himself throughout – in an energetic, but never too far out manner. CD

Aum Fidelity, 2021. New Copy ... $12.99 14.99
This album's got a really fitting title – as the whole thing feels like it's ready to take off into the heavens, right from the very first note – driven on strongly by the drums of Gerald Cleaver, who's a perfect match for the bold basswork of William Parker – as the pair work together with the searing tones of Ava Mendoza on guitar! Most tracks have a very fast-moving, dynamic sensibility – Parker and Cleaver moving together as if they're joined at the waist – so that even some of the freer flights of fuzz from Mendoza don't get in the way of the highly rhythmic energy of the record. A stunning new setting for the genius of Parker – which never seems to end at all! Titles include "Tabasco", "Mayan Space Station", "Domingo", and "Canyons Of Light". CD features the bonus tracks "Rocas Rojas" and "The Wall Tumbles Down". CD

William ParkerMeditation/Resurrection ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2017. Used 2 CDs ... $17.99
Bassist William Parker in two different settings, but both served up here with a very unified feel! The material was all recorded on a single day, with a core trio that features Parker on bass, Hamid Drake on drums, and Rob Brown on alto – a group whose energy you can really feel building up right from the core, especially in the interplay between Parker and Drake, a pair who only seem to get better together over the years! The first half features trumpeter Jalalu Kalvert Nelson – whose soaring sense of pride really adds a new dimension to the music – this righteous quality that opens up new channels of beauty when he steps in. The second half features pianist Cooper-Moore, instead of the trumpeter – and his tones are maybe more introspective, and produce a similar shift in the music, especially in the way Parker shapes his notes. This change really deepens our understanding of the trio on both sides – and shows just how adaptive they are to each other. Titles include "Horace Silver Part 2", "Things Falling Apart", "Give Me Back My Drum", "Rodney's Resurrection", "Urban Disruption", and "Orange Winter Flower". CD

Centering/Aum Fidelity, 2021. New Copy 10CD set ... $79.99 89.99
An incredible collection of work from the legendary bassist William Parker – not a package of older material, but a full ten albums' worth of new recordings done expressly for this set – showing Parker not only as a budding multi-instrumentalist over the space of the past few years – but also a very collaborative composer, with a much wider range of expression than anyone might have guessed a few decades ago! Parker is still a completely essential part of the avant jazz underground, but he's also emerging as a mature statesman – able to bridge both scenes and generations with material like this – a hugely collaborative effort that features contributions from Lisa Sokolov, Kyoko Kitamura, Ellen Christi, Jalalu Kalvert Nelson, Eri Yamamoto, Raina Sokolov Gonzalez, Andrea Wolper, the Universal Tonality String Quartet, and other groups as well. Each CD features a different side of Parker's creative genius – and together, the package is maybe the richest statement of his powers we've ever heard! CD

William Parker's given us some tremendous music over the years, but this album may be one of our favorites of the bunch – as the set's got this back-to-basics approach that has Parker working in trio formation with Hamid Drake on drums and Daniel Carter on reeds – all with this effortless sense of fluid spontaneity that comes through right from the very first note! The interplay between the musicians is fantastic – free, but always very soulful and directed too – and Carter shifts between trumpet, alto, tenor, clarinet, and flute – making these really magical sounds that are sometimes echoed by Parker on trombonium and shakuhachi. The whole album's brilliant – and features the long songs "Happiness", "Painted Scarf", "Groove 77", and "Painter's Winter". CD also features the track "A Curley Russell". CD

William Parker works here with his excellent In Order To Survive quartet – a fantastic lineup that features Rob Brown on alto sax, Cooper-Moore on piano, and Hamid Drake on drums – a very fluid, very well-matched group who are able to follow Parker in his farthest musical explorations! Tracks are all long, and relatively free – but as with Parker's bass over the decades, there's always this sense of inherent logic that comes through – possibly his strong spirit which unites the players, even indirectly – but also just a proud presence that never seems to let us down. The music was all recorded live on a single night at Shapeshifter Lab in Brooklyn – and titles include "Demons Lining The Halls Of Justice", "Eternity", "In Order To Survive", "Newark", and the long "Eternal Is The Voice Of Love" suite. Aum Fidelity, 2015. Used ... $11.99
Some of the most soulful music we've ever heard from bassist William Parker – a set that puts his mighty instrument to use at the core of a sextet who move with a sound that's perhaps a bit more straight ahead than some of Parker's usual music – but no less spiritual at all! The group's got a key element in the vocals of singer Leena Conquest – an artist we've always liked on Parker's other records, but who really has a righteous power here, very much in a classic 70s mode – soaring out front on her lyrics with a quality that we'd reserve for a rare few jazz singers – like Carmen Lundy or Dee Dee Bridgewater! And like both of them, she gels perfectly with the rest of the group – which includes great work from Rob Brown on alto, Lewis Barnes on trumpet, Eri Yamamoto on piano, and Hamid Drake on drums. Parker is sublime throughout – sounding as bold and righteous as ever – and titles include "Bowl Of Stone Around The Sun", "Feet Music", "Dodson Ngoni Blues", "Great Spirit", and "Prayer Improv". CD

No Business (Lithuania), 2014. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wonderful work from two players who've just gotten better and better over the decades – both musicians who've made a huge impression from the late 70s onward, but who also continue to grow and refine their ideas as the years go on! This set features beautiful duets recorded at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York, in 2009 – with Bang on violin and thumb piano, and William Parker on bass, plus a bit of shakuhashi and dousn gouni as well. Both players handle strings at a level that's far different than most of their contemporaries or influences – and have this sublimely spiritual style that's often a bit exotic too – but never in the sort of easier ways of Bang's Vietnam-related projects. Instead there's a very freely creative spirit as both players come together – finding a unique voice that's extremely moving, and never too heavy-handed – a huge reminder of why we love them both so much. Titles include "Bronx Aborigines", "Eternal Planet", "Buddha's Joy", "Medicine Buddha", and "Sky Song". CD

Tzadik, 2008. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic outing from these three legends of improvised music – set that's maybe more in the territory of work by Milford Graves and William Parker than it is the usual work of Anthony Braxton – especially for this time in his career! Graves plays drums and percussion, Parker is on bass, and Braxton leaps into the fray wonderfully as the three improvise together – drawing on energy that's much more like his Chicago roots in the AACM than his style of later years – almost as if Braxton's rewriting himself into loft jazz history and shaking loose of the mathematical formulas that often inspire his tunes! Braxton handles a range of saxes, and Graves is especially wonderful in the recorded space of the meeting – as the trio make their way through five improvised selections. CD

An interesting trio of players – Peter Brotzmann on reeds, William Parker on bass, and Gregg Bendian on drums and percussion – all playing together on a variety of live numbers recorded in the US in 1992. The format's a bit open ended – as the different modes of each player rise and lower in prominence during the set – and there's a striking comparison here to the more unified mode of some of Brotzmann's later 90s recordings in the US – done at a time when his presence on these shores was a bit more established. Titles include "Because Patterns Two", "The March Burst To Open Blue", and "Roil Segments". CD

Reedman Daniel Carter's in some great company here – a trio that features the bass of William Parker and piano of Matthew Shipp – both bold musical partners that really give the album a lot of depth! Shipp is especially great, and at times really seems to dominate the proceedings with his energy – that non-stop spiral of constant creation that has made his work in recent years so rewarding – balanced with Parker's always strong command of the bass, and shifting sounds from Carter – who blows flute, clarinet, tenor, alto, and soprano sax – as well as a bit of trumpet. The album features a live performance of the title suite, "Seraphic Light" – divided into three sections. CD

The essence of Duke Ellington – but in the hands of William Parker, it's a very different thing than you might expect! The group here is larger than usual for Parker – a great ensemble used in ways that definitely echo some of Ellington's more inventive scoring, especially his mature use of tone and color – yet both the solos and ensemble moments go way way farther than anything the Duke might have imagined – all the bold, righteous brilliance that we've come to love in Parker's own recordings – focused back on one of his greatest inspirations. The lineup is quite impressive – as musicians include Roy Campbell on trumpet, Ras Moshe on tenor and soprano, Rob Brown and Darius Jones on alto, Sabir Mateen on clarinet and tenor, Steve Swell on trombone, Dave Burrell on piano, Hamid Drake on drums, and Parker himself on bass – and titles include "Take The Coltrane", "Essence Of Sophisticated Lady/Sophisticated Lady", "Caravan", "Essence Of Ellington", "Take The A Train/Ebony Interlude", and "Portrait Of Louisiana". A really unusual album from bassist William Parker – an artist whose musical world is usually quite far from the 70s soul of Curtis Mayfield – even though both Mayfield and Parker are pretty darn righteous individuals! Yet here, Curtis and William come together in a stunning way – as Parker reworks classic Mayfield songs, and transforms them into fantastic vehicles for spiritual jazz expression! The group has a warmly collaborative vibe, and energy that feels like some lost indie jazz project from the 70s – all held together by Parker's bold acoustic bass and masterful leadership – in a lineup that includes vocals from Leena Conquest, piano from Dave Burrell, saxes and flute from Sabir Mateen, tenor and soprano from Darryl Foster, trumpet from Lewis Barnes, drums from Hamid Drake, and poetry and voice from Amari Baraka. With a lineup like that, you can already guess the vibe – and we can promise that the whole is even better than you might have hoped! Bassist William Parker and pianist Matthew Shipp are no musical strangers to each other – as they've been recording together for many decades, even on more contemporary albums that make the title here a bit misleading! And yet, there's definitely something special about the set – wide-open tracks that really have the duo coming together with energy that's all their own – almost as if Shipp and Parker are saying "yeah, we've played together with others recently, but let's save all the good stuff for a time when we can make a record like this!" The recording quality is superb – not a subtle moment of Parker's basswork is lost, and Shipp's balanced perfectly, both in his approach to the piano, and the way he comes across in the mix – a sublime presentation of the magical improvisational work between both players, on titles that include "Further DNA", "Song Of Two", "Re-Union", and "The New Zo". The notes of this set have Matthew Shipp raving about the piano talents of Paula Shocran – and we can say that she not only has a sense of complexity and dexterity that maybe matches Shipp's work on the keys, but also works beautifully here with Matthew's frequent musical partner, bassist William Parker! The improvisations here are very loose and open – with each musician really retaining their own identity – not in challenge to the other, but as a way of establishing points of a triangle that are firm, and which allow for plenty of free play in between – qualities that drummer Pablo Diaz really brings to his work here too. All tracks are nice and long, and handled with a real sense of beauty – "Los Jardines", "Ausencia", "Capricornio", and "El Templo". CD

The music here is from a musical production that Parker's been creating over the past two-decades – beautiful vocal tunes that are some of the most poetic he's ever penned – sung here by Lisa Sokolov, alongside piano from Cooper Moore – a stripped-down approach that really gets to the heart of the lyrics, but never with any sort of sleepy presentation, given the vibrancy of Sokolov's approach. One tune features an additional cello, but overall the album is just voice and piano – Parker just acts as composer and producer – and titles include "The Death Of Death", "Footnote To A Dream", "For Jeanne Lee", "Poem For June Jordan", "Invocation (for David S Ware)", "Angel's Tear", and "Soul In Heaven". Aum Fidelity, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
LP, Vinyl record album

Duke University Press, 2021. New Copy ... $20.99 29.95
A huge book on the equally-huge creative legacy of bassist William Parker – a musician who first arose in the loft jazz scene in New York during the 70s, but who's gone on to be one of its greatest surviving players, and one who's transformed the inspirations of that world into so many different modes of expression over the decades! Author Cisco Bradley really digs deep – following Parker from his southern roots to his childhood in the South Bronx, to his strong contributions to avant scenes, first in New York, then around the globe – all with a sensitivity to community and context that shows that Parker isn't just some genius musician, but both an evolving participant in creative activity, and one whose contributions have transformed the landscape as well! The book is softcover, 402 pages, and has copious notes, a discography, and even some black and white images as well. Book

Maybe one of the most beautiful albums we've heard from William Hooker in years – and a set that has so much more to offer than just his work on drums! There's certainly some of the freer, more improvised moments on the record that you'd expect from Hooker – but there's also these wonderfully tuneful passages, too – work that draws from all sorts of warmly crafted sounds from other group members – a lineup that features Mara Rosenbloom and Mark Hennen on piano, Jimmy Lopez on percussion, Charles Compo on flute, Stephen Gauci and Sarah Manning on saxes, and Jal Rohm Parker Wells on bass. There's also a bit of electronics from Theo Woodward – an element that's used sparingly, but in really great ways – and at the core, Hooker is still very much in charge of the proceedings, as you can feel when he really gets going on the kit. That's Mat Walerian on the cover, looking all nice and spooky – but the group has a very down-to-earth, familiar trio at the core – Matthew Shipp on piano, William Parker on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums and percussion – players who really give the album a lot of well-grounded spirit! Walerian plays alto, bass clarinet, soprano clarinet, and flute – sometimes in contrast to the mood of the others, especially Parker and Shipp, who have this fantastic way of revolving around each other in sonic space! Fantastic live material from a very unique group – the instantly-legendary meeting of reedman Peter Brotzmann with the leading lights of the Chicago avant jazz scene in the 90s – brought together into a tremendous tentet that's maybe even better than the sum of its parts! The group features Brotzmann on tenor and clarinet, Ken Vandermark on tenor and bass clarinet, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Fred Lomberg-Holm on cello and violin, Michael Zerang and Hamid Drake on drums, Kent Kessler on bass – and "honorary Chicagoan" Mats Gustafsson on tenor and flutophone, plus Toshinori Kondo on trumpet and electronics, and William Parker on bass. Phew, that's one heck of a lineup – the kind that rivals some of the European or British improvising ensembles of decades past – but one that has its own very specific flavor, and a sound that's brimming over with youth – so much so that the non-Chicago guests really seem to gain inspiration from the core. Maybe the strongest creative statement to date from tenorist James Brandon Lewis – an album of work inspired by the legacy of George Washington Carver – served up here with a sense of depth that's certain to open even more doors for Lewis in years to come! There's a majesty to the music that's apparent in the very first notes, and which keeps on coming as each song unfurls – that search for truth talked about in Carver's writings, quested here with a quintet that includes William Parker on bass, Chad Taylor on drums, Kirk Knuffke on cornet, and Chris Hoffman on cello! The energy of Parker and Taylor is sublime – and makes for a setting that's different than other recent records we've heard from Knuffke, who also seems to draw new currents of sonic inspiration from the gentle but powerful use of the cello. The tenor has a raw, sharp edge throughout – a personality that would be striking, even without the beautiful setting of Lewis' original material – and titles include "Lowlands Of Sorrow", "Jesup Wagon", "Experiment Station", "Fallen Flowers", "Seer", and "Arachis". Gigantic genius from the late David S Ware – heard here in an unreleased performance from the final years of his time – at a time when his saxophone greatness was still very much in full flower! The group is a trio – with William Parker on bass and Warren Smith on drums – and Ware really dominates on both tenor and a Buchler straight alto sax, which he plays with an amazing sound – really spinning out these incredible solos that are full of soul and imagination, with that special quality that first made us fall in love with his music many decades back. At his best – as he is here – Ware can improvise freely, yet still find this spiritual core to guide him forward – which is very much the case on the two long performances included in this double-length package! Aum Fidelity, 2019. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Drummer Whit Dickey works here in two different quartets – both with strong work from Rob Brown on alto sax, but also with very different sounds – given the lineup of each group! The first quartet is on the Peace Planet half of the record – an amazing combo with Matthew Shipp on piano and William Parker on bass – both really reignited in recent years, and sounding tremendous with their longstanding sense of interplay – almost a unit in itself, but cut through with sharper lines from Brown's alto, and given an unusual sense of pulse by Dickey's drums! A different group plays on the Box Of Light half of the record, with a very different vibe – as the lineup features Steve Swell on trombone and Michael Bisio on bass – both musicians whose approach really changes things up. Swell's horn really competes with Brown's upfront, and Bisio's bass is maybe a bit more elliptical than Parker – very open and up and down the scale, in a way that seems to push Dickey's drums as well. Peace Planet titles include "Ancient Monument", "Suite For DSW", "Blossom Time", and "Seventh Sun" – and Box Of Light titles include "Eye Opener", "Ethereality", "Rotation Steps", and "Jungle Suite". We'll be the first to admit that David S. Ware has made some clunky records over the years – but we love this album from 1992, and think it's one of the best that he ever made! The record is tighter than most, and Ware is nicely restrained, and locked into a spiritual groove that links him in a tradition with players like Billy Harper and Pharoah Sanders. He's also playing with his excellent quartet that includes Matthew Shipp, William Parker, and Marc Edwards. Shipp and Parker lay down these amazing modal grooves, and Ware dips in, searches around, and blows out incredibly soulful solos – filled with a lot more emotion and meaning than some of his other work from the mid 90s. A nice set of tunes – one that goes way past the Charlie Parker reference in the title! Williams claimed an affinity to Bird because he, like Parker, came from Kansas City – but by the time of this set, he'd spent over 15 years in the Bay Area – soaking up the rich and soulful energy of its 70s scene. The session features guest work from Pepper Adams on baritone – but despite that fact (touted highly on the cover), the real charm of the session is from Williams – who leads a group through some great soul bop numbers that crackle with the innocent charm of some of the best indie soul jazz sides of the late 70s. The record we've been waiting years for Jeff Parker to make – a fantastic funky set that shows off a whole new side of his talents! Parker's guitar has been on plenty of great albums over the past decade or two, but this set may well be one of his greatest moments so far – a really unusual, really personal set that takes his music to a whole new level – partly schooled by vintage funk, as you might guess from the cover – but also partly set up in a spirited new direction that propels Jeff farther forward than any other record! Parker plays guitar and a range of keyboards – and the album almost has a laidback Shuggie Otis vibe at points, but is a lot more complex overall – thanks to excellent rhythm work from Paul Bryan on bass and Jamire Williams on drums – who ground the sound, but can take off freely with Parker, too – as does Josh Johnson on alto, flute, and some other keyboards too. The whole thing almost puts Jeff into Robert Glasper territory – in its unique blend of jazz, funk, and soulful currents – but very unique, a genre unto his own, really well-deserved after all these years. The album's brilliant from start to finish, with cuts that include "Executive Life", "Para Ha Tay", "Here Comes Ezra", "Jrifted", "Visions", "How Fun Is It To Year Whip", and "Get Dressed". This album follows beautifully from Jeff's previous album for International Anthem – and like that one, it's an explosion of new and old ideas at once – jazz elements with soul currents, all put together with a complexity that lives up to Parker's long legacy in music, but which also has an organic appeal that makes the whole thing come together with effortless ease! There's plenty of sophistication in the sound, but it also sneaks in with lots of grooves that Jeff never had before – including some funky currents that come from Parker's work on keyboards, drums, and samples in addition to his usual guitar – and added drums from Jamire Williams and Makaya McCraven. Titles include "Lydian Etc", "Build A Nest", "Del Rio", "3 For L", "Fusion Swirl", "After The Rain", and "Max Brown". CD

Dave Grusin, David Shire, Lalo Schifrin, & OthersQuinn Martin Collection Vol 1 – Cop & Detective Series (Barnaby Jones/Dan August/Most Wanted/Cannon) ... CD
La La Land, Mid 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $24.99
A motherlode of cop and crime soundtracks from the 70s – none of which have ever been commercially released before! All the music here comes from the mighty holdings of Quinn Martin Productions – the wellspring of so many great hour-long TV detective shows in the 70s – often well-penned dramas that were really a cut above the usual! The company's approach was always pretty top-shelf – and that included the music, too – which was often scored in superb ways, especially considering that in the pre-DVD days, many of these shows would only get seen once or twice. There's a quality level here that matches most widely-circulated 70s cop soundtracks from the cinematic world – and many of the composers are of the same caliber, too – with material that includes 18 tracks for two Dan August episodes by Dave Grusin, 15 more tracks by Lalo Schifrin for an episode of Most Wanted, 15 tracks for Barnaby Jones by Jerry Goldsmith, 20 tracks for two episodes of Cannon by John Parker, and more material by Duane Tatro, Nelson Riddle, Patrick Williams, David Shire, and Bruce Broughton. InspirationsReggae Fever (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), 1970. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
The Inspirations were maybe not the biggest vocal group on the Jamaican scene at the start of the 70s – but man, they really tear things up in a wonderful way on this classic set with production by Joe Gibbs! As with other Gibbs' projects, there's a few numbers here by other artists too – but the main focus is the sublime vocal tunes that have the Inspirations in the lead – singing in a duo mode that's clearly inspired by 60s soul acts from the US, but with the vocals more harmonized together, instead of trading back and forth – yet at a level that still makes for a really raw edge overall! Rhythms are fantastic – nicely bubbling in a rocksteady mode – and Inspirations titles include "Wet Dreams", "Ease Up", "Samfie Man", "Why Do You Laugh At My Calamities", "Bongo Nyah", "Who You Gonna Run To", "Sweet Sensation", and "Fattie Fattie". Other tracks on the album include "Only Yesterday" by Ken Parker, plus the tracks "Liquidator", "Reggae Fever", and "Mad Rooster" by Lloyd Willis & The Destroyers. PLUS, this 2CD set features a huge amount of added material – 43 more tracks that are all contemporaneous Joe Gibbs productions – work by The Reggae Boys, Destroyers, Soul Sisters, Johnny Moore & The Supersonics, Soul Mates, Hippy Boys, Stranger Cole, Niney, Ken Parker, Ernest Williams, Ansel Collins, and even more by The Inspirations. ✨✧ Maceo & All The King's MenDoing Their Own Thing ... LP
House Of The Fox, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Fantastic album of hardcore funky cuts, with a great jazzy tip on the righteous solos laid down by Maceo and the band. Recorded in the time that Maceo was away from James' band, with a crack lineup of players including Melvin Parker, Jimmy Nolan, Bernard Odom, and L.D. Williams. Nearly every cut is a lost funky gem, with funky bass, hard drums, and cool horn solos with a large sense of humor. Highlights include "Southwick", "Got to Get 'Cha", "Maceo", and the fantastic "Funky Women". This one was even hard to find in the old days – just another reason to be glad you're living in this reissue-happy time! LP, Vinyl record album
