WhispersLove For Love ... LP
Solar, 1983. Very Good ... $3.99
Love for Love, but still a pretty groove-heavy set too – one that continues the mix of "dancin and romancin" The Whispers served up on their previous album! Side one is heavy on "dancin" – and features some bass-heavy tunes that are very much in the best mainstream LA soul modes of the time – production by the group and Leon Sylvers, all in a sound that's heavy on basslines and keyboards, but which still has harmonies that are way ahead of most of the group's younger contemporaries! These harmonies come into play even more strongly on the "romancin" side of the record – a batch of ballads that have The Whispers in the mellower territory that first got them started – updated slightly here with an early 80s soul vibe, but sung with proof that the quintet were still at the top of the harmony game. Titles include "Tonight", "Keep On Lovin Me", "This Time", "Had It Not Been For You", "Try It Again", "Lay It On Me", and "Keep Your Love Around". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear and a faded name in marker on back.)

WhispersVintage Whispers ... LP
Epic, Early 70s/1988. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Beautiful west coast vocal group soul by The Whispers! Although the material they had recorded for Solar and Epic around the time this compilation of earlier material was issued had earned them bigger fame, we just love this early stuff – and this album's pulls together many our favorites by them from their days recording for Soul Clock and Janus, darn tough records to find! The tracks have a soaring harmony sound, and titles include "A Mother For My Children", "Your Love Is So Doggone Good", "If You Feel Like Coming Home", "Can't Help But Love You", "Planets Of Life", "Seems Like I Gotta Do Wrong" and "I Only Meant To Wet My Feet". WhispersWhisper In Your Ear ... LP
Solar, 1979. Very Good+ ... $6.99
This mighty group does way more here than just Whisper in your ear – as they're completely on top of their game, ending the 70s with a wickedly sharp sound that would help them stand strong for years to come! The group started in fragile harmony soul modes, grew with confidence in the 70s, hit a bit of a dancefloor mode – and here step off with this mature style that's totally wonderful – the best of all worlds together as one – shaped by arrangements from Tom Tom 84, Gene Page, and Keni Burke! Titles include "Whisper In Your Ear", "Homemade Lovin'", "If I Don't Get Your Love", "Love At Its Best", "Can't Do Without Love", and "Pretty Lady". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has shrinkwrap stuck on the front and back.)

WhispersWhisper In Your Ear/Whispers/Imagination (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Solar/Robinsongs (UK), 1979/1980. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 20.99
A trio of classic albums from The Whispers – with bonus tracks too! On the first set, the mighty group does way more here than just Whisper in your ear – as they're completely on top of their game, ending the 70s with a wickedly sharp sound that would help them stand strong for years to come! The 1979 Whispers album was one of a few to bear the group's name as its title – and it's also one of our favorite albums by The Whispers – a later gem with some really great songs, and a sound that shows the group strongly moving into hit territory! In some way, the album's almost a return to the mellow harmony soul of the group's roots – slowing down the pace from the disco years to craft some extremely great ballads and midtempo numbers. There's still a bunch of great club tracks too – like the classic "And The Beat Goes On" – but in a way, our favorite tracks are the mellower ones, like "Lady", "I Love You", and the sublime, "A Song For Donny", a tribute to the late Donny Hathaway, written around the music of his classic "This Christmas". On Imagination, the group takes off from the Philly groove style of their late 70s work, moving into a style that picks up all the best touches of the early 80s LA sound – electro keyboards, but not too much; quiet storm production, but not so much so that the album's smothered in it; and a professional approach to harmonies and songwriting that showed that the group was still an unstoppable force in soul music! Includes "Imagination", "It's A Love Thing", "Say You", "I Can Make It Better" and "Up On Soul Train". Bonus tracks include an instrumental of "Song For Donny" – plus 7" mixes of "Can't Do Without Love", "Can You Do The Boogie", "And The Beat Goes On", "It's A Love Thing", and "I Can Make It Better". ✨✧ WhispersWhispers – The Definitive Collection 1972 to 1987 (4CD set) ... CD
Robinsongs (UK), 1970s/1980s. New Copy 4CD ... $29.99 38.99
A tremendous testament to one of the greatest soul groups of the 70s – one with a legacy that goes far beyond the music in this set, but which is really captured here during the golden years of The Whispers on record! The group has roots that start in the vocal group underground of the late 50s and 60s – and spent most of that second decade perfecting their harmonies and vocal interplay – to a point where they emerged in the early 70s with real hit-making power, thanks to their effortless interpretation of mellow tracks and ballads! Yet the group were not without a groove – and as the decade moved on, they also proved to be equally great at clubbier tracks too – able to pick up the pace while still delivering meaningful lyrics, a quality that really set them apart from so many others at the time. As the 80s move in, the group continue to grow and develop their sound – staying sophisticated, but down to earth too – at a level that maybe gave The Whispers a longer run of all-great records than so many artists of their generation. This well-done package does a wonderful job of picking out all the best cuts from the long run of recordings covered inside – 63 tracks that provide a perfect place to start, if you're just getting into the group – and which together will offer you up a fantastic package if you're a longtime fan. ✨✧ WhispersJust Gets Better With Time ... LP
Solar, 1987. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A late 80s winner from The Whispers – one of the few 70s groups who really found a way to keep themselves going strong into the next decade! The album gave the group their super-huge hit "Rock Steady" – possibly their biggest mainstream success ever – and it's got the group working with the team of Babyface and Reid, in a snapping kind of soul that's partially pop, but which almost hints at new jack at points. Titles include "Rock Steady", "I Want You", "No Pain No Gain", "In The Mood", "Just Gets Better With Time", "Love's Calling", and "Give It To Me". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear and a small spot of clear tape on a few corners.)

✨✧ WhispersSo Good ... LP
Solar, 1984. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Soaring uptempo soul from The Whispers – still going strong with the Solar sound well into the 80s – and stepping out here in a real hit-making style! The vocals are great, the grooves are solid – and there's a snapping, rhythmic feel to the first side – which is billed as the "Dancin" side, and done in a very 80s groove mode! Side two is named the "Romancin" side – and as such, has a slightly mellower feel – still some beats on the bottom, but mostly in a gentler way that really lets the harmonies take over. Titles include "On Impact", "Contagious", "Suddenly", "Don't Keep Me Waiting", "Sweet Sensation", "Never Too Late", "Are You Going My Way", and "Some Kinda Lover". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some ring and edge wear, with some clear tape remnants at the spine.)

✨✧ VariousWhispers – Lounge Originals ... LP
Numero, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest collections we've seen from the Numero Group in a long time – an assortment of obscure lounge singers and groups who played the Midwest scene in the glory days of the cocktail bar – not exotica acts or jazz combos, but instead the kind of warm and mellow artists you might find working in the dim corner of some shag-laden lounge! These are artists who were clearly brought up in a world of rock first, jazz and other styles second – maybe with a homegrown AOR vibe, but a lot more stripped-down and personal too. The package is very cool – designed like a matchbook cover from one of the clubs, complete with a poster of other matchbooks inside – and artists include The Do's & Don'ts, Jan Tober & Ron Satterfield, Richard Powell, Terri Schmidt, Tom Dae, Nick Gillette, Mike Munoz, James, Mood Mystics, Cleveland Jones, and Blue Eyed Soul. Joe McPhee & Hamid DrakeEmancipation Proclamation – A Real Statement Of Freedom ... CD
Okka Disk, 2000. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
A late 90s record, but one that we might easily put next to similar spiritual improv albums from the 70s – a fantastic meeting of both artists at Chicago's Empty Bottle – with Joe McPhee on pocket trumpet and tenor, and Hamid Drake on some amazing drums and percussion! Drake's wonderfully open, fluid sense of sound is a great match for McPhee here – really opening up a side of Joe's music in a way that's a bit different than some of his other recordings of the time, including his Okka Disk material – spirited, but never stressed – exploratory, yet always with a strong sense of direction. Titles include "Hate Crime Cries", "Cries & Whispers", "Mother Africa", and "Emancipation Proclamation". Very spare, but very moving – in the manner of some of the early work by the Art Ensemble of Chicago! CD

VariousCity To City 2 – A Retrospective Journey Through Detroit, Chicago & New York Underground House Sounds ... CD
BBE (UK), 1980s/1990s. New Copy 2CD ... $10.99 15.99
DJ Deep does it again – and takes us on a magical journey across decades and cities – bringing back some lost house music gems from Chicago, Detroit, and New York – most of which are from the late 80s and early 90s independent years of the scene! There's a nicely simple sound to most of the tracks here – a style that takes house music back to the core elements of its roots without getting trapped in cliche or overplayed tracks – just simple beats, keys, and maybe a dash of vocals – plus usually a core element that develops as the track rolls on, changing slightly through the minimalist progression of the tune. 2CD set features a both mixed and unmixed disc – with titles that include "The Numbers" by Rodney Baker, "Bring U Up" by Romanthony, "Drum Drum" by Jovonn, "Let Your Body Talk" by Ace & The Sandman, "I'll Never Let You Go" by William S, "I'm So Deep" by Vincent Floyd, "Pump That Body (deep house mix)" by Mr Lee, "Motivation Song" by G Strings, "Whispers" by Ron Allen, "Rain Forest" by Lowkey, and "Feel The Fire/Urban Culture" by Naomi Danielle. VariousStars Of Dore – Los Angeles' Group Soul Sound ... 7-inch
Dore/Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy (pic cover)... $12.99 14.99
A special set of soul from legendary LA indie label Dore Records – home to some of the finest 60s sides on the west coast! Dore had a few key groups at the time – a young Whispers, and the excellent Superbs – but also cut work by some other great artists too – all with a level of care and class to match the best soul sides coming from New York or Detroit at the time! The Dore approach manages to have a sparkle without losing any sort of edge – careful production and instrumentation, but a real respect for the voices in the lead, too. This style works especially well with groups – as you'll hear on this four track set – which features the cuts "The Big Hurt" by The Superbs, "You Really Never Know Til It's Over" by The Vel Vettes, "Oh How I Love You" by Little Johnny Hamilton & The Creators, and "Nothing Lasts Forever" by The Natural Resources. 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ VariousThis Is Lowrider Soul – 1962 to 1970 ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
There have been lots of Lowrider soul compilations on the market over the years – documenting the great of of mellow cuts on the LA scene of the 60s – particularly the kind that could move slow, but with a heavy groove at the bottom – perfect for chilling out in the back of a car on an endless summer night! Yet few have ever done the job as well as this collection – because in the hands of Ace/Kent Records, the music finally gets proper historical context – moved past the jargon of the East LA in crowd, and presented with great sound, and the kind of detailed notes that really get at the special qualities that made the west coast soul scene so different than the east in the 60s! The set list is superb – fantastic mellow soul tracks that are perfect, even if you don't care about this history – and titles include "It's Not That Easy" by Reuben Bell with The Casanovas, "I Really Love You" by The Ambassadors, "As I Sit Here" by The Whispers, "One More Chance" by The Four Tees, "Take A Step" by Aesop's Fables, "Why'd You Put Me On" by Bobbi Row & The Englishmen, "I Wanna Chance" by The Vows, "Second Hand Happiness" by Jimmy Conwell, "Be Kind To Love" by The Interpreters, "As Long As I've Got You" by The Charmels, "Don't Forget About Me Baby" by Jeff Dale, "I'm A Lonely Man" by Bobby Burn, "Crying All By Myself" by William Bell, "I'm Just Passing Time" by Melvin Hicks & The Versatiles, "When You're Poor" by The Lovers, "It's So Hard To Break A Habit" by The Webs, "Find Me" by The Attractions, "Never Gonna Let Him Know" by Debbie Taylor, and "Pretending Dear" by The Lovelles. Essential, Late 60s/Early 70s/2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A nice little set that delivers exactly what's promised in the title – sweet soul music from back in the day, plus a few tracks from the contemporary Philly scene! The cuts here nicely move between styles – many are the warm harmony cuts that were the calling card of Philly and New Jersey at the start of the 70s – and the rhythms here move from completely mellow to midtempo – that shift in harmony soul towards the club that was so influential from some of these artists at the time. Tracks include "Me & My Gemini" by First Class, "Carla My Love" by Softones, "Together" by Tony Strong & The Philly Soul, "Babies Having Babies" by Terry Tate, "Sure Thing" by New Birth, "Hypnotized" by Linda Jones, "My Ebony Princess" by Jimmy Briscoe & The Little Beavers, "Special Lady" by Ray Goodman & Brown, "Natural High" by Captain Sky, "Reunited" by Johnny Ingram with Sherena Khan, "You Know How To Make Me Feel So Good" by Glenn Leonard with Jean Carne, "Didn't Anyone Ever Tell You I Love You" by Philly Devotions, "Yes I'm Ready" by Barbara Mason, "A Lover's Stand" by Norma Jenkins & The Dolls, and "Your Love Is So Doggone Good" by The Whispers.
