Wayne SnowFigurine ... LP
Roche, 2021. Near Mint- ... $14.99 19.99
Wayne Snow was born in Nigeria, recorded this debut between Paris and Berlin, and comes across with the kind of globe-spanning sound that legacy might make you expect! This is future soul at its best – not warmed-over cliches from the past, but a record that has a crisp sort of contemporary vibe through and through – a lean style that does more with less, and which really brings just the right sort of focus onto Wayne's vocals when he steps into the mix! A great record that really gets right what so many others try to reach these days, but always end up messing up with a bit too much effort – not the case with Wayne Snow, as you'll hear on "Faceless", "Nina", "Seventy", "Number One", "Figurine", "Relativity", and "Magnetic". VariousHouse Of Groove ... LP
Roche (France), 2024. New Copy ... $30.99 34.99
Laidback soul and easygoing funk from the great Roche label – a selection of cuts in both English and French, all united with a very dreamy way of approaching the groove! A few tracks get a bit more upbeat, but even those are linked with the others in a style that has this cool production haze – a way of blending neo soul, hip hop, and even a bit of club – on tracks that include "Sois Pas Presse" by Enchantee Julia & Lossapardo, "Out Of Sight" by Tentendo & Taj Ralph, "Say What" by Flaurese & Kartell, "Double Takes" by Wantigga & Maydien, "Hide & Run" by Zimmer & Didi Han, and "U&I" by FKJ, Darius, Wayne Snow, and Crayon. ✨✧ Doug CarnInfant Eyes ... CD
Black Jazz/Snow Dog (Japan), 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
An undisputed 70s soul jazz classic – and arguably the best album that Doug Carn ever cut for the Black Jazz label! The set is a masterpiece of spiritual jazz – with Carn on keyboards setting up the groove, and wife Jean singing some incredible vocals – very different than her later soul work as a solo act, and with a vibe that's like Dee Dee Bridgewater at her soulful 70s best. Jean does a killer job with the album's classic vocal version of Bobby Hutcherson's "Little B's Poem" – done here with sweet lyrics that really open the song up a lot, and make it into an anthem of love and joy that we'd be hard pressed to match with any other tune! And all other tracks are great too – with titles that include "Moon Child", "Passion Dance", and a great version of Wayne Shorter's "Infant Eyes". CD
(Out of print, 2012 pressing – remastered with updated artwork and new liner notes. Includes obi!)

Brit Funk AssociationAncestral Voices ... CD
Expansion (UK), 2023. New Copy ... $18.99 21.99
That's almost an Earth Wind & Fire-styled image on the cover – and the Brit Funk Association definitely live up to the spirit of that scene – which is maybe no surprise, given that group members have a legacy that goes way back for many years on the UK soul scene! There's a warmth to the record that's really timeless – an updating of classic 70s modes that's almost in the Incognito mode, but which is often jazzier at times, with some great focus on horn solos over the vocals – a bit like the mix of jazz, soul, and funk that Wayne Henderson brought to his classic production efforts back in the day! The group give a nod to one of those classics with a sweet cover of "Always There", and serve up a nice take on "Pick Up The Pieces" – alongside tracks that include "Freedom Dancin", "Driftin", "Snowfall", "Elevation", "Let It Flow", and "Take It In Stages".
