Dele Sosimi & The Estuary 21Confluence ... CD
Wah Wah 45s (UK), 2023. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
Dele Sosimi was raised in the shadow of Fela Kuti, literally – as he spent part of his youth in Fela's commune – yet his music is nicely free of some of the overdone Afro Funk modes of the 70s, and instead really finds a fresh way forward with all sorts of wonderful criss-crossings of styles! Sosimi was born in London, and later returned to the city – and the work here really has that special sparkle when the British scene gets things right – bringing together elements of its post-colonial richness, but with a new vision for the future – optimistic and uplifting, but never in a way that makes the music seem too facile or easygoing. One of Dele's key musical partners here is Sam Duckworth, of Get Cape Wear Cape Fly fame – and titles include "Open Up", "Ride Out The Storm", "Ori Mi", "Mo Se Bola Tan", and "E Si Medo". CD

✨✧ Isaac Birituro & The Rail AbandonSmall Small ... LP
Wah Wah 45s (UK), 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A nice update of older Ghanian modes – as Isaac Birituro mixes his beautiful work on the balafon with some more contemporary rhythms and vocals – all at a level that's nicely different from other recent work in an Afro Funk mode! The woody sounds of the core instrument make for a nice balance with the shifting array of male and female vocals – and even when rhythms are more driving, they're never too forced or beat-heavy – which also keeps the record away from some of the overproduced work of the Afro-remix scene. Titles include "Senye", "Ta Soo Maa Yele", "Dondomo", "Doniyan", "Bawa", "Sivukile", "Kontomo", and "Told You So". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousLiving In The Streets Vol 2 – More Wah Wah Jazz, Funky Soul, & Other Dirty Grooves ... CD
BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Even better than volume one – and a stellar collection of rare funky grooves! The compilation features a brilliant batch of tracks from the 70s – mostly underground soul, jazz, and funk tunes that have yet to appear on reissues, chosen by UK DJ Dean Rudland, with a feel that's as righteous and progressive as the title might imply. There's lots of gems on here that were only ever issued on 45s, or on the kinds of rare LPs that we'd be selling in the $100 range, if and when we could find them! Titles include "Sleep Talk" by King Errison, "Theme From The Men" by Joe Bataan, "Kissing My Love" by Spanky Wilson, "Fever" by Sharon Cash, "Where Will You Run" by Walter Hawkins & Selah, "Harambee" by Jambo, "Africa" by Preston Epps, "Mucho Macho" by Macho, "I Must Be Doing Something Right" by Irene Reed, "I Can't Stand It" by Brenda George, "Afro Texas" by Letta Mbulu, "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" by Katie Love & The Four Shades Of Black, "Kicking Back" by Joe Houston, "Love Potion Cheeba Cheeba" by The Mighty Tom Cats & Ann Winley, and "Return Of The Prodigal Son" by Byrdie Green. ✨✧ VariousWhat It Is – Funky Soul & Rare Grooves From The Vaults Of Atlantic, Atco & Warner Bros Records 1967 to 1977 (4CD box set) ... CD
Rhino, Late 60s/1970s. Used 4 CDs ... Out Of Stock
One of the funkiest box sets we've ever seen – and amazingly issued by an American major label! The 4CD package is a treasure trove of funky work from a decade of Warner Brothers, Atlantic Records, and related labels – tunes pulled both from mainstream album releases and much more obscure 45s – all expertly collected here into a whopping batch of 91 tracks, all packaged in a cool little box with an 80 page booklet! This one goes way past some of the silly "decade" sets from Rhino, and really displays a new level of cool and connoisseurship – one that finally appreciates the rich depths of funky work at their fingertips, most of which has not been properly reissued in the US! Titles include "Almendra" by Macondo, "Goin Down" by Allen Toussaint, "Wah Wah Man" by Young Holt Unlimited, "Spinning Wheel" by Wade Marcus, "Hard Times" by Baby Huey & The Baby Sitters, "What's So Never The Dance (parts 1 & 2)" by Houseguests, "8 Days On The Road" by Howard Tate, "Getting Uptown" by United 8, "Wanoah" by Black Heat, "Let It Crawl" by Society's Bag, "Flute Thing" by Seatrain, "Try It Again" by Bobby Byrd, "Funky To The Bone" by Freddi Henchi & The Soul Setters, "Improve" by Darrow Fletcher, "Rien Ne Va Plus" by Funk Factory, "Gossip" by Cyril Neville, "Spreadin Honey" by Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band, "Stoned Soul" by Artie Christopher, "Sexy Coffee Pot" by Tony Alvon & The Belaires, "Tampin" by The Rhine Oaks, "Jan Jan" by The Fabulous Counts, "Sing A Simple Song" by The Noble Knights, "It's All In Your Mind" by Soul Angels, "Funky John" by Johnny Cameron, "Don't Come Around Here Any More" by Mark Putney, "Keep On Dancing" by The Commodores, "Right On Brother (part 1)" by South Shore Commission, "Pop Popcorn Children" by Eldridge Holmes, and "The Deacon" by Brute Force. CD
(CONDITION NOTE: Disc 3 has a mark that skips on the last 4 tracks – everything else is in great shape. Priced accordingly.)

✨✧ VariousMovements – 14 Deep Funk Pearls Compiled By Tobias Kirmayer ... LP
Perfect Toy (Germany), Late 60s/Early 70s. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
One of the funkiest compilations we've heard in a long long time – a stunning set of rare 45s, all pulled together by Tobias Kirmayer of Tramp Records fame! The groove here is totally in the pocket – a blistering blend of hard drums, rough guitars, and blasting horns – all served up with some nice jazzy moments from time to time, and the kind of vocals that might put James Brown to shame! The whole thing's lovingly packaged, remastered, and fully licensed with the high level of quality we've come to expect from the Perfect Toy label – and Tobi even knocked himself out with some great notes on each of the tunes. Titles include "Soul Popcorn (parts 1 & 2)" by Doc Oliver, "Wahoo Wahoo Wahoo" by Wayne Carter, "Whatever Turns You On (parts 1 & 2)" by Prepositions, "Todos" by Nombres, "Soul Safari" by Lew Hanson & The Islanders, "What It Is (parts 1 & 2)" by Randolph Brothers Plus, "Muy Sabroso" by Lou Garno Trio, and "I Weep" by BB Brown.
