VariousDjango Unchained ... CD
Universal Republic, 2012. Used ... $5.99
Life! Liberty! Vengeance! A wild and very cool soundtrack for Tarantino's dual Blacksploitation/Spaghetti Western homage Django Unchained – featuring bits from some of our favorite Italian western composers mixed up with classic and contemporary funky soul and hip hop! It's the kind of soundtrack that could only happen for Quentin Tarantino – with rare and hard-to-find compositions by Luis Bacalov, Ennio Morricone, Riz Ortolani and Jerry Goldsmith on one hand – along with a few seemingly antithetical new compositions on the other – including a track penned by star Jamie Foxx for Rick Ross, a James Brown "Payback" remix with a vocal from the 2Pac archive, plus ones by Anthony Hamilton, John Legend and others! Last but not least, it's got some great bits of film dialogue by Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson and Leonardo DiCaprio. Titles include "Django" by Luis Bacalov, "The Braying Mule" by Ennio Morricone, "Nicaragua" by Jerry Goldsmith with Pat Metheny, "Day Of Anger" by Riz Ortolani, "Unchained (The Payback/Untouchable)" by James Brown with 2Pac, "Who Did That To You?" by John Legend, "100 Black Coffins" by Rick Ross, "Trinity (Titoli)" by Annibale E I Cantori Moderni and many more. ✨✧ Shelley Nicole's blaKbusheShe Who Bleeds ... CD
Red Butterfly Music, 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
A very righteous set of tracks from Shelley Nicole and her Blakbushe ensemble – a lot more powerful than some of the other underground soul sets of recent years, and done with lots of full-on instrumental touches on keyboards, guitar, and bass – making for a style that recalls some of the best recordings of the Black Rock scene in years past. Shelley herself plays bass, theremin, and sings in a style that's got a lot of bite – delivering lyrics that are a lot more political than usual for an album of this nature, and reminding us of all the power bubbling under in the New York scene during the late 70s and early 80s. Looks like that power's returned – and with a vengeance – on tracks like "3/4 Sh*t", "America's Secret", "Spiritual Revolution", "Scorpio Chile", and "Cheatin Baby Daddy". CD

✨✧ Tangerine DreamSorcerer ... LP
MCA, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great soundtrack moment for Tangerine Dream – and one of their darkest, too! Bill Friedkin's films are always pretty darn spooky – but the music of the group definitely adds a lot here – bringing in these coldly hypnotic passages that really work wonders with the images on the screen – and, in a way, also help Tangerine Dream compress their often longform electronic musings into more of an "essence" by focusing on scene-based compositions! And even without the film, the album still really stands strongly on its own – a great maturation moment for Tangerine Dream, but one that still has all the edge and darkness of their best early recordings too. Titles include "Rain Forest", "The Call", "Creation", "Vengeance", "Search", and "Grind". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Territory Band (Ken Vandermark)Territory Band 5 – New Horse For The White House (3CD set) ... CD
Okka Disk, 2006. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
The greatest album to date from Ken Vandermark's Territory Band – and a record that firmly places the group in a lineage of experimental jazz orchestrations that runs from Duke Ellington through Charles Mingus and the later work of the London Jazz Composers Orchestra! There's a strength here that goes beyond any of the group's earlier efforts – and although some numbers continue their freely improvised moments, others fall into a straighter, even more focused sound – one that's got the boldness of Mingus at its best, with lots of powerful passages that give way to even more personal solo moments. Players include Ken Vandermark, Fredrik Ljungkvist, and Dave Rempis on reeds; Axel Dorner on trumpet, Johannes Bauer on trombone, Paul Lytton and Paal Nilssen-Love on percussion, Jim Baker on piano, Kent Kessler on bass, and Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello. 3CD set features 2 studio discs and 1 live radio performance – with titles that include "Fall With A Vengeance", "Untitled Fiction", "Corrosion", "Cards", and live performances of all numbers on disc 3. ✨✧ Thin LizzyFighting ... LP
Vertigo, 1975. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Forget the silly cover image, because this is a gem of a record from Thin Lizzy – pre-Jailbreak, but a set with all the best elements of that classic firmly in place! The guitars are sublime – almost a chorus at times – and Phil Lynott's got that nasty sneer perfectly focused – that special wit and sensitive soul that could still come out with a brashness that matches the power of the group's instrumental approach! And as with some of their best albums, there's these really special little songs nestled in the mix – non-hits, but beautifully personal – and the kind of no-filler songs that really make these Thin Lizzy classics so great. Titles include "Rosalie", "Wild One", "King's Vengeance", "Spirit Slips Away", "Silver Dollar", "Ballad Of A Hard Man", and "For Those Who Love To Live". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Yabby YouConquering Lion (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Micron/Pressure Sounds (UK), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A roots reggae classic from the 70s – a much more obscure set than the giants of the generation by Bob Marley and Black Uhuru, but a set that's got a similar sort of righteous power – maybe even more so, given that Yabby You has the freedom of an indie label setting to get his message across! The set actually took years to put together, which you can hear in the mix of approaches that are used from track to track – material recorded at Black Ark, Dynamic, Channel One, and Harry J – which has creates a sense of variety that you'd not as likely to hear on a record of this nature at the time – although the sound is completely unified, thanks to the spirit of Yabby You's message. King Tubby handled the mixing, and creates a deep sound to match the lyrics – on titles that include "Covetous Men", "Anti Christ", "Carnal Mind", "Love Thy Neighbour", "Run Come Rally", "Jay Vengeance", and "The Man Who Does The Work". CD edition features 12 more bonus tracks – all the dubs from the album! CD
