Bulla En El BarrioVamonos Que Nos Vamos (white vinyl pressing) ... LP
Figure & Ground, 2024. New Copy ... $28.99 32.99
A set that's heavy on percussion, and which really sticks to this group's commitment to the rootsier sound of Colombian music – particularly the coastal style of bullerengue, which is served up here in a bold mix of drums, percussion, and rising voices! There's a female singer in the lead, but it's clear that the whole group is joining in with some of the lyrics – rising up their voices joyously next to their rhythms – which are often augmented by handclaps and other gestures that really emphasize the very physical quality of the music! Titles include "Madre Fuego", "El Bocao", "Colombia Sin Panama", "San Antonio", "Madre Luna", and "Madre Sol". LP, Vinyl record album

A fantastic cut from Main Source – one that steps loud and proud with a killer Lou Donaldson sample and some mighty Idris Muhammad drums! "Vamos A Rapiar" is one of the overlooked nuggets on their first album – served up here on a limited and mighty nice 7" picture disc single! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Jesse Green1, 2, 3 Vamos ... LP
EMI/Movie Play (Spain), 1976. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A classic set from Jessie Green – the singer's biggest album ever, and a great blend of 70s soul with deeper Caribbean roots! Jessie hails from Jamaica, and got his start in reggae – but by the time of this record, he was reaching out with a wider, global sort of style – one that has island rhythms bubbling amidst warmer modern soul arrangements – all in a blend that's completely sublime, and which has some of the same tight-grooving appeal as the best Miami soul of the TK Records scene! The set features the classic "Nice & Slow" – a tune that's more midtempo than you'd guess from the title – and lots of other great tracks that include "Don't Do it", "Will You Won't You", "Come With Me", "Flip", "You Came You Saw You Conquered", and "123 Let's Go". Erlon ChavesProcura-Se Uma Virgem (180 gram pressing) ... LP
CID/Mad About Records (Portugal), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 36.99
One of the grooviest albums we've ever heard from Erlon Chaves – a Brazilian arranger who got his start in the bossa generation, later did some more traditional music – but here explodes with this great fusion of European and Brazilian soundtrack styles! The record's credited to the Orquesta St Moritz – most likely a studio group with a European name, for good pedigree – but there's a huge amount of sounds here that rival some of the best modes coming from the EMI/Odeon label at the start of the 70s – particularly the mix of samba and bossa elements with larger funky arrangements, then given a more sophisticated twist – as you'd find in the music of Marcos Valle! Most of these tunes are instrumental, and there's some really wonderful organ work on a number of the titles – on tracks that include "Procura Se Uma Virgem", "Grilo", "Uma Velha Bossa", "Ba Oba Oba", "Vamos Nos", "O Anjo E O Diabo", and "Tema De Amor". LP, Vinyl record album

Fruko Y Sus TesosEl Violento ... LP
Discos Fuentes/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 33.99
One of the most hard-hitting early albums from the legendary Fruko – a set that really lives up to the powerful image on the cover and the title of the record – almost as if Fruko's trying to answer the badass energy of Willie Colon on the New York scene! The record definitely burns as hard as any of Willie's best from the time, but with that earthier groove that Fruko did so well – that quality that made his music from the time such a fresh, powerful new voice that showed the world that Colombia had plenty of great sounds of its own to offer – served up with styles that owned nothing to NYC or PR at all! Vocals are by Joe Arroyo and Wilson Saoko – and titles include "Salsa Na Ma", "Alma Navidena", "Mosaico Matancero", "La Nueva Bamba", "Vamos Pa'L Campo", "Rumba En Navidad", "Tronco Seco", "El Violento", "Nadando", and "Tu Solo Tu". Jorge NavarroNavarro Con Polenta ... CD
Aleluya/RGS (Argentina), 1977. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
Fantastic funky fusion from the 70s Argentine scene – a set that begins with a killer take on the Led Zeppelin tune "Black Dog", and only gets even groovier after that! Jorge Navarro leads the group on piano, Hammond, and Fender Rhodes – and the group is a tight combo with guitar, bass, drums, and percussion – shifting rhythms nicely to match the dynamic mood of Jorge's work on the keyboard – as he moves through 70s fusion styles and Latin jazz in a wonderful array of grooves! At times, Navarro's not afraid to use some funky phrasing on his electric keys – ala Herbie Hancock – and at other times, he's way down in the groove and really going to town. Titles include "Funk Yourself", "Black Dog", "Vamos Quedando Pocos", "Lucky Southern", "Despues De La Polenta", and "Repartamos El Funky". CD

✨✧ Marcos ValleEstatica ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2010. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
An incredible record from Marcos Valle – maybe our favorite-ever of his recent-revival years! The sound here is sublime – a warm blend of funky rhythms, bossa roots, and larger orchestrations – all very much in the spirit of those legendary albums that Valle recorded for EMI/Odeon right at the start of the 70s – soaring, sophisticated, and never without a groove! Valle did all the arrangements for the set, but gets some great help on strings and horns from Jesse Sedoc – whose touches are really a key part of the Odeon-styled sound here – and a number of the tracks feature female vocals duetting with Marcos' lead, in a mode that's just like his classic work with Anamaria! Titles include "Prefixo", "Vamos Sambar", "Novo Acorde", "1995", "Esphera", "Eu Vou", "Papo De Maluco", and "Baiao Maracatu". CD

Sadao WatanabeCome Today ... CD
Victor (Japan), 2013. Used ... $24.99
Excellent small group work from Sadao Watanabe – easily one of the best Japanese reed players of the past 50 years – still sounding great here on a recent acoustic session! Watanabe plays alto throughout – a definite preferred horn of late – and stretches out in these expressive solos in the company of Gerald Clayton on piano, Ben Williams on bass, and Jonathan Blake on drums – a combo who step out with lots of warm sympathy on a set of tracks that's all original material by Watanabe! Sadao's tunes have a feel that's quite poetic, yet still also swinging too – a balance carried out in a wonderfully subtle way on tunes that include "I Miss You When I Think Of You", "Gemmation", "Vamos Juntos", "Simpatico", and "Warm Days Ahead". ✨✧ Joao Donato & DonatinhoSintetizamor ... CD
Polysom/Far Out (UK), 2017. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most unusual projects we've ever heard from the legendary Joao Donato – not the bossa jazz of his roots, but instead a fresh new groove created with his son Donatinho! The music is heavy on keyboards, and definitely has the 80s vibe promised by the cover – with the younger member of the duo handling keyboards from that generation, and singing with a bit of electric crackle in his voice – while the older Donato brings in all his classic charms, and creates a great sense of counterpoint in the process! The whole thing's nicely funky – sweet 80s electro overall – but Joao's presence also gives the whole thing a lot more depth, and it's clear from their duo moments that the pair really have a lot of warmth in their hearts for each other. Titles include a remake of "Quem E Quem", plus "Luz Negra", "Clima De Paquera", "De Toda Maneira", "Lei Do Amor", "Interstellar", and "Vamos Sair A Francesca". CD

Deck Disk (Brazil), 2002. Used ... Out Of Stock
After years of obscurity, it seems like there's no end to the comeback strength of Joao Donato! This album is one of the best of the recent flurry of work from this under-recorded bossa master – a lightly jazzy set that features his warm lead vocals on nearly every track, plus some occasional duets with other singers like Joyce, Marisa Monte, Joao Bosco, and Marcelo D2! The record's really bubbling over with warmth – magical piano lines hitting a nicely rhythmic groove, Joao's vocals dancing underneath with his usual sense of modest charm. Old and new tracks are handled with equal magic – and titles include "Flor Do Mato", "Nao Tem Nome", "Muita A Vontade", "Caminho Do Sol", "Falta De Ar", "E Muito Mais", "E Vamos La", "Balanca", and "Nao Sei Como Foi". Say hello to our little friend – the classic soundtrack to Scarface – a record that showed a whole new side of the talents of the legendary Giorgio Mororder! By the time of this set, Moroder had already broken the charts with disco productions, and turned out to be a groundbreaking soundtrack artist too – but Scarface has Giorgio finding new ways to bring his electronic ideas into play – working with a variety of singers on some tunes that really echo the mad vibe of the narrative – including "Rush Rush" by Deborah Harry, "Vamos A Bailar" by Maria Conchita, "She's On Fire" by Amy Holland, and "Shake It Up" by Elizabeth Daily. The set also features Moroder instrumentals – "Tony's Theme" and "Gina & Elvira's Theme" – and the Paul Engemann performance of "Scarface (Push It To The Limit)". LP, Vinyl record album

The stunning first full length album from The Pixies – produced with a completely sublime touch by the great Steve Albini! There's a brilliance here that's kept this record playing strongly for decades (maybe too strongly, if you ask the roommates of some folks out there) – and although the sound here has spawned countless imitations, it's never as great as here in the hands of the originators! Titles include "Bone Machine", "Break My Body", "I'm Amazed", "Vamos", "Cactus", "Where Is My Mind", "Gigantic", "Something Against You", and "Broken Face". CD

✨✧ Stone AllianceStone Alliance (aka Marcio Montarroyos) ... LP
PM/Teichiku (Japan), 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant pairing of talents – Brazilian trumpeter Marcio Montarroyos and the soulful Stone Alliance group of the 70s – coming together here in Rio with extra help from Hermeto Pascoal on reeds, and added work from Brazilian musicians David Slon, Dom Bira, and Erasto De Holanda Vasconcelos! The style is tighter and harder than the usual Brazilian jazz of the time – a bit fusiony at points, but always with a richer vibe that's almost more in a 70s Latin jazz mode – maybe because of the strong bottom end from the trio of Gene Perla on bass, Don Alias on drums, and the mighty Steve Grossman on reeds! It's an especially nice treat to hear Grossman in this setting – a nice change from usual, but one that he really illuminates with his soulful lines – and titles include "Hey Bicho Vamos Nessa", "Risa", "The Greeting", "On The Foot Peg", "A Child Is Born" and "Libra Rising". ✨✧ Franco TonaniNight In Fonorama ... CD
Schema/Rearward (Italy), 1964. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the best of the Schema/Rearward reissues of lost Italian jazz – and a sparkling session that features the work of a young Gato Barbieri, plus trumpeter Franco Ambrosetti, pianist Franco D'Andrea, and bassist Giovanni Tommaso. Drummer Franco Tonani leads the session – but the best work is by Ambrosetti, who's got a lot of Miles Davis in his horn at this point, and by D'Andrea, who's warm and lyrical, with none of the self-indulgence of later years. Barbieri lacks the fire of his great recordings, but his tenor's also nice and strong – and he adds some of the rougher edges to the session, in a nice counterpoint to Ambrosetti's sweeter horn. Titles include "Solar", "Vamos", "U Boat", "Drum Ding", and "Hard Mode", done in 2 takes. Great package, with a nice cover, and excellent attention to good sound! CD
