✨✧ Alan ShorterOrgasm ... LP
Verve, 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A record as striking as its title – and one of the few recorded performances of trumpeter Alan Shorter – brother of Wayne Shorter, and an equally powerful force in avant jazz in the 60s when he got a chance! And although Alan hardly recorded much, this album's a masterpiece – a set that bridges the "new thing" moment of jazz in the mid 60s with some of the freer improvisations that were taking over on both the New York and European scenes – a balance of modes that's similar to some of the Don Cherry albums for Blue Note in the late 60s, and delivered here with a stunning lineup that includes superb early modern tenor work from Gato Barbieri, bass from either Charlie Haden or Reggie Johnson, and drums from either Muhammad Ali or Rashied Ali. Tracks are all originals – and titles include "Parabola", "Straits Of Blagellan", "Outeroids", and "Orgasm". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldElla At The Hollywood Bowl – The Irving Berlin Songbook ... LP
Verve, 1958. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Not the only time that Ella Fitzgerald recorded at the legendary Hollywood Bowl – but a fantastic unreleased set that has the singer serving up a stunning live version of her Irving Berlin Songbook material! The set features backings by Paul Weston, who'd handled the original record – who sounds far more groovy and swinging than on his own albums of the 50s, which were mostly mellower mood music. Instead, he does a great job of bringing out all the vibrancy in these songs – which got a tremendous update for a new generation on Ella's studio album, but sound maybe even more personal and powerful here. Titles include "Supper Time", "Heat Wave", "The Song Is Ended", "Cheek To Cheek", "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm", "Let's Face The Music & Dance", "Let Yourself Go", and "Puttin On The Ritz". ✨✧ Buck OwensBuck Owens ... LP
Capitol, 1961. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The earliest album that Buck Owens cut for Capitol Records – and a great little set that catches the legend just before he'd put his hit 60s style a bit more firmly in place! Here, Buck is coming across more as a rising talent from the Bakersfield clubs instead of the later chart-topping radio star – and as part of that, he's got a style that's a bit more down to earth, especially on the ragged ballads which really shine on the record. The whole thing's a wonderful look at a talent that's already great, but yet to become as codified as later on – and titles include "Above & Beyond", "Excuse Me", "Tired Of Livin", "Walk The Floors", "Take Me Back Again", and "Second Fiddle". ✨✧ Lee Perry & The UpsettersEastwood Rides Again ... LP
Trojan (UK), 1970. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
If there's anyone who could make the idea of Italian westerns and Jamaican grooves come together, it's the young Lee Scratch Perry – the mad musician who always had a great talent for mixing it up! Eastwood Rides Again follows the theme of The Upsetters previous classic, Return Of Django – and like that one, the groove isn't just the rocksteady rhythms you'd expect – but also maybe this more spacious version of the style, with a bit more space between the notes than some of their Kingston contemporaries – almost a mode that could be inspired by the spacious soundtrack scoring of the Italian scene, then delivered with a much grittier vibe. Most tunes are instrumentals, and titles include "Eastwood Rides Again", "Salt & Pepper", "Red Hot", "Tight Spot", "Catch This", "Popcorn", and "You Are Adorable". LP, Vinyl record album
