✨✧ Chicago Underground QuartetGood Days ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2020. New Copy ... $8.99
A fantastic step in the continuing evolution of the "Chicago Underground" project of trumpeter Rob Mazurek and drummer Chad Taylor – soaring out here in a set that's full of spiritual energy and a level of imagination that even surpasses their classic recordings from years ago! Mazurek blows piccolo trumpet, but also adds in some electronics – and Taylor is mindblowing on drums, playing with a style that's open, but always gently swinging – and matched with some synth bass from Josh Johnson, who also plays organ and piano on the set. The mighty guitarist Jeff Parker is the last member of the group – and like Mazurek, he's really come a long way in the past decade, and the quartet work together here at a level that has us falling in love with the Chicago Underground all over again. Moody at times, but never too loose – and titles include "Orgasm", "Good Days", "Batida", "All The Bells", "Unique Spiral", "Lome", "Westview", and "Strange Wing". CD

✨✧ East Of UndergroundHell Below (East Of Underground/Soap/Black Seeds/Sound Trek) (3CD set) ... CD
US Army/Now Again, 1971/1972. Used 3CDs ... Just Sold Out!
Proof that the US Army had plenty going on during the 70s – as you'll hear from this killer set of military-produced grooves from East Of Underground! The set goes way past the previous East Of Underground reissue – to feature work by the groups Soap, Black Seeds, and Sound Trek – all wrapped up in a beautiful package that's as visually pleasing as the music is funky! The cuts here were all recorded by US Army servicemen during the height of the Vietnam war – as Army-issued albums designed to encourage recruitment (as if a few funky grooves could help offset the bad press the war was getting on TV!) But despite that odd origin, the music here is all pretty great – mostly covers of familiar tunes from the time, but recorded with a nicely gritty quality that's mighty nice – and which makes the overall feel of the records like digging into some lost small studio tapes – ala Numero! Now Again have done a great job of putting together the whole package, too – contributing a wealth of notes and photos, and really digging deep into the scene in which these unique records were created. Not only that, but the packaging also replicates the style of the original odd releases too! The set features a CD each of music by East Of Underground and Soap – plus another CD that brings together an unusual double LP by the groups Black Seeds and Sound Trek. Titles include "I Just Want To Celebrate", "Kool & The Gang", "Walking In The Rain", "Backstabbers", "I Love Everything About You", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Go Outside In The Rain", "Black Magic Woman", "Hell Below", "Higher", "Popcorn/Santana", "Walk On By", "Java Girl", and "Get Together". Winley/Demon (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A legendary album – and for good reason too – a set that's as mysterious as it is funky, and a record that's stayed at the top of our crates for years! The album features a really unusual collective of musicians, pulled together under the guidance of producer Paul Winley – a group that features George Benson on guitar, Dave Baby Cortez on organ, Willis Jackson on tenor sax, and Earl Williams on some massively funky drums! The music's a mix of funky jazz and gritty soul – put together with some really weird studio touches – including an uncredited male voice that comes in and out of the tracks, bad-rapping along with some very hip commentary. Ann Winley sings the female vocals on the set – often egged on by the dude – but the real charm of the record lies at the bottom – the wicked drums, funky basslines, and choppy instrumental bits that have gotten the set sampled plenty over the years. Titles include the classic "Smokin Cheeba Cheeba" alone, the groovy "Finger In It", a great breakbeat version of "Ain't No Sunshine" with a tenor solo by Willis Jackson, and the slow bluesy talking cut "Fed Up", a baaaad rap about a couple splitting up – done here in both vocal and instrumental versions. UGK (Underground Kingz)Ridin' Dirty (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Jive, 1996. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... About January 22, 2021
The mid 90s classic from Underground Kingz – they're commerical breakthrough, with all the uncompromising grit of their first few records on the lyrical tip, albeit with a stripped down soulful resonance to a lot of beatcraft. The gritty rhymes is the unifying element here, with tracks that split the difference between lean, crisply bouncing, hard-hitting production and surprisingly soul and funk steeped tracks. It works great on both sides of that style divide, and it's little wonder that made such a big impact at the time. Stands the test of time, too. Titles include "One Day", "Murder", "Pinky Ring", , "Touched", "F*** My Car", "Diamonds & Wood", "Good Stuff" and "Ridin' Dirty". LP, Vinyl record album

MGM/Polydor, Late 60s. Used ... $3.99
Delicate dissonance, bruised beauty, and hazy noise pop – all in one of the best rock albums ever made – the amazing first album from the Velvet Underground and Nico! The album's the stuff of legend – and for good reason, too – a surprising slab of vinyl that barely set the world on its ear when first issued back in the mid 60s – yet a record that's gone onto have an influence felt for decades to come – arguably one of the most important rock records of all time. There's a really sinister edge to the record, even when things are sweet – and the range of subject matter and handling here is brilliant – from the dream pop slice of heaven "Sunday Morning", the melodic bitterness of "Femme Fatale", the massive White Light-esque freakout "European Son", and the sublime "Heroin" – quite possibly the inspiration for generations of drug use to come. The whole thing's a classic – with wonderful vocals from both Nico and Lou Reed – and titles include "Venus In Furs", "Run Run Run", "Black Angel's Death Song", "I'll Be Your Mirror", and "All Tomorrow's Parties". ✨✧ Velvet UndergroundLive At Max's Kansas City ... LP
Cotillion, 1970/1972. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
This 1970 live recording arrived at the end of the line for the true Velvet Underground – before latter-day bassist Doug Yule took over the name for a short and (thankfully) long-forgotten stint, in a performance that became known as the group's last live set! Maureen Tucker and John Cale were indeed MIA at this point, making it Lou's show all the way, performing his soon to be seminal songs from throughout the REAL band's too-short existence – and tracks include "I'm Waiting For My Man", "Sweet Jane", "Lonesome Cowboy Bill", "Sunday Morning", "Femme Fatale", "After Hours", and "New Age". Cotillion, 1970. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The end of the road for the Velvet Underground – but a set that's also one of the group's best-remembered albums too! The record marked a big shift for the group – a move to Atco from Verve, continuing to work without John Cale – and the sound is possibly more rockish and straight ahead than some of their previous efforts (certainly compared to White Light/White Heat) – but always with that dark edge that Lou Reed could bring to the music! In a way, the whole thing's almost a recasting of all the advances made in 60s rock, but seen through a lens that shows the darker corners and shadows that have crept up alongside – that kind of subtle, yet extremely powerful quality that Reed would bring to his long run of solo albums in the 70s – but served up here with more of an edge, in the definite VU fashion. Titles include the seminal classics – "Sweet Jane" and "Rock & Roll", plus "Cool It Down", "New Age", "Head Held High", "Lonesome Cowboy Bill", "Oh Sweet Nuthin", and "I Found A Reason". CD

Verve, 1968. New Copy 2 LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the most far-out, freaked-out albums ever from the Velvet Underground – easily the most experimental set the group ever recorded! The album's awash in really unusual sounds and styles – from the sonic blast of the title cut "White Light/White Heat", to the 17 minute garage/psych jam of "Sister Ray" to the very odd "The Gift" – which is a creepy story about cuckolding, told with voice and instrumentation split over different stereo channels! Other tunes offset the darkness with an eerie touch of sweet – and include "Here She Comes Now", "Lady Godiva's Operation", and "I Heard Her Call My Name". Arguably one of the Velvets' most influential moments – even if it's also one of their least commercially successful! This great 2LP package features loads of sweet extra bits – including "I Heard Her Call My Name (alternate)", "Hey Mr Rain (version one)", "Temptation Inside Your Heart (original mix)", "Stephanie Says (orig mix)", "Beginning To See The Light (early version)", "Hey Mr Rain (version two)", and "Guess I'm Falling In Love (instrumental)". ✨✧ Steven BlushNew York Rock – From The Rise Of The Velvet Underground To The Fall Of CBGB ... Book
St Martins, 2016. New Copy ... $6.99 34.99
That's quite a cover photo on the book – and the interweaving of key talents in the image really gets at the style of the narrative within! Author Steven Blush delivers a decidedly one-sided document of the New York scene from the late 60s onward – a picture of countless creative musicians, working alongside each other to create sounds that would go onto transform a generation – often in ways that were strongly inspired by the city itself. The book is less of a long story, than a history that encapsulates moments, focuses on figures – and even lays out groups in some index-styled passages – showing their strengths and weaknesses, and often augmenting the text with countless comments from singers and musicians who were part of the scene. In a manner similar to other rock books in recent years, Blush allows plenty of space for other folks' voices – sometimes almost making the whole thing feel like an oral history of the New York scene, but one that's directed by his own choices and sense of structure. The softcover book is almost 500 pages long, and has a fair bit of black and white photos too. Book

The album was produced by Piero Piccioni – and features soundtrack/sound library maestros Alessandro Alessandroni and Oronzo De Filippi, working as the pseudonymous Braen and Gisteri – in a batch of heavy drums and basslines, topped with lots of fuzzed up guitar – but all with a tightness that's a lot more forward-moving than the usual set of this nature! Trio/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... $22.99
A stunning little session – and every bit as wonderful as you'd expect from a lineup that includes Dollar Brand, Don Cherry, and Carlos Ward! The three players work together here in open, spiritual styles – with really long-flowing lines from Brand on piano, in a more modal style that's different from some of his other records – balanced out with bold trumpet lines from Cherry, and soaring alto sax from Ward – a player who doesn't always get the chance to step out this much! All three players vocalize a bit, but more in some sort of rootsy way that echoes the music – and the album's a really unique outing from all three players – and a set we'd rank with their best from the time. Titles include "Don's Song", "Cherry", "Bra Joe From Kilimanjaro", "Swazi", and "Jabulani Easter Joy". CD

A bold statement from the Free Music Ensemble – not a large group, but instead a searing power trio that features Ken Vandermark on reeds, Nate McBride on bass, and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums! The group work in a full-on mode that recalls the early power of the FMP scene, or some of the most striking work on ESP from the 60s – but given Vandermark's influence, they've also got a more open sensibility – clear in the shift from passage to passage of the album's numbered tracks, dedicated to influential heroes that include Peter Brotzmann, Paul Lytton, Joe Morris, and Joe McPhee – all contemporary heroes that are given great due here, but in a way that still has the trio retaining a very strong identity of their own. Even at this early stage, Joe's showing a strong musical vision, working in a style that moves off the New York avant scene of the 60s – but which also shows traces of the spiritual exploration to come in the 70s. Joe plays trumpet, pocket cornet, and tenor – and the rest of the group features Reggie Marks on saxes, Tyrone Crabb on bass, and Ernest Bostic on drums and vibes. Six months before that gig, the same group performed at Holy Cross – recorded, but never issued until now. VariousAstral Daze Vol 3 – Snapshots Of The South African Rock Underground ... CD
Fresh (South Africa), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $18.99
A side of the South African scene that's quite different than any world music expectations you might have – as the package is filled with late 60s/early 70s rockers from the SA underground – loads of fuzzy nuggets that come across with a strongly Anglo sound overall! In fact, the package might almost be seen as a southern hemisphere counterpart to the sound of London at the end of the 60s – as most of these groups work with a similar blend of freak, fuzz, and darkness that matches bigger British names of the period – especially those groups who were getting a bit far-out, yet never overindulgent. Most tracks are relatively short – not yet at prog jamming levels – and production is nice and sinister throughout – on titles that include "I've Found Her" by The 004s, "Here Comes The Sun" by Hawk, "The Circus" by McCully Workshop, "Hairy Man" by The Gentle People, "Jersey Thursday" by Abstract Truth, "The Ostrich" by Jacob Hay, "Caterpillar" by Third Eye, "Lonely Man" by Wakeford Hart, and "All In A Dream" by The Tidal Wave. Now Again, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The deepest of the deep from the American scene at the start of the 70s – groups so hip they weren't quite soul, weren't quite rock – and instead kind of a funky hybrid of both! After opening our ears to countless underground sounds from around the globe, the Now Again label turn back to some of the territory of its roots – the hinterland of groups who labored mostly in obscurity, but left behind a few funky 45s that have become the stuff of legend – and which show us that there was a much bigger psychedelic funk underground out there besides groups like Funkadelic or the early Ohio Players! As always with the label, the history is really given its due, thanks to very detailed notes – alongside titles that include "Down By The River" by Purple Snow, "There's A Wrinkle In Our Time" by 1984, "Function Underground" by We The People, "Corruption Is The Thing" by Creations Unlimited, "Jimi's Guitar Raps With The Bass" by Jimi Macon, "I'm A Man" by Cisneros & Garza Group, "Just Got To Be Free" by Black Conspirators, "BL Movement" by Blaclites, and "The Siesta Is Over" by The Revolution. BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99 30.99
John Morales has a wonderful talent for taking a funky track and making it sound even funkier – which he does beautifully here in this killer collection of old school tunes! Many of the numbers are vintage clubby soul from the late 70s and early 80s – and Morales has this great way of crystalizing all the best elements in the songs, and pulling them to the forefront – but all without ever ruining the integrity of the tracks that sounded so great in the first place! In other words, the work here isn't the imprint of some young DJ trying to overstate his presence – but a true music maestro who really knows what makes a club track great – a vibe that takes us back to the brilliant edits of the early NYC scene. All titles here are previously unreleased – and this 2LP set features four titles that include Morales mixes of "I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More Baby" by Barry White, "You Got Me Running" by Lenny Williams, "Mind On You" by Level 42, and "Vertigo/Relight My Fire" by Dan Hartman. Atlantic, 1976. Used ... $9.99
We have never been sure if this comp was to be derided for not including some more interesting punk bands from the lower east side, or if all the really great ones already had contracts with other labels anyway. Besides, now that the venerable punk landmark is long gone, this early document provides an interesting perspective on a remarkable time. The music here runs the gamut from seminal new wave, to pretty dumb bar rock, but there's more than a few nuggets of great 70s guitar swagger too. 8 groups in all, with 16 tracks, including "Head Over Heels", "Slash" and "All For The Love Of Rock And Roll" by the Tuff Darts, "Operetico", "AVM" and "Poe" by the Shirts, "Cadillac Moon", "Change It Comes" and "Let Me Dream If I Want To" by Mink Deville, "Over, Under, Sideways, Down" and "I'm Rellay Not this Way" by Manster, "We Deliver" by the Miamis, "I Need A Million" and "It Feels Alright Tonight" by the Laughing Dogs, "Romance" by Sun, and "Everybody's Depraved" by Stuart's Hammer. Esoteric (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99
A heady look at the Danish psych scene at the end of the 60s – music that's not nearly as well known as US or UK material from the time – but every bit as groovy! Most of these groups sing in English, and are sharing some of the same influences that were coming out of the British scene in the late 60s – no surprise, as they were probably receiving most of the same pirate radio broadcasts that were such a key part of transformative modes during the decade – which means that you'll hear a huge strain of elements running through this music – influences from jazz and blues, as well as a shift from beat group styles into much more sophisticated modes – including proggy touches too. Most of this work was only the stuff of obscure psych reissues in the past – but this box set really illuminates the scene, along with a huge booklet of notes and images. 32 tracks in all – work by Hurdy Gurdy, The Old Man & The Sea, Thor's Hammer, Beefeaters, Young Flowers, Day Of Phoenix, Rainbow Band, Burnin Red Ivanhoe, Blast Furnace, Pan, Ache, Savage Rose, Culpeper's Orchard, and many more! Jazzman/Now Again, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
The Jazzman label hits a whole new level of brilliance – as they turn their funk-trained crate digging skills to the world of spiritual jazz! The collection's an amazing batch of ultra-rare tunes – tracks that take inspiration from the John Coltrane/Archie Shepp work on Impulse Records in the 60s, then run with those roots in bold new directions – soaring, spiritual aims in jazz that reach for new freedoms, but never lapse into the totally-outside modes of free jazz! Instead, there's a really great balance here between structure and struggle – as many tunes often have a good rhythmic pulse, usually modal and soulful, then let the horn solos stretch out more in their own sounds and directions. The mix is amazing, as is the selection of tunes – rare numbers pulled mostly from American independent jazz releases of the 60s and 70s – most of which are as obscure as the funky 45s we normally get from Jazzman. As with the label's US funk compilations, there's full notes on all the music – a heck of a lot of detail on these artists – and tracks on the set include "Paul's Ark" by Morris Wilson Beau Bailey Quintet, "Ayo Ayo Nene" by Mor Thiam, "Nomusa" by Ndikho Xaba & The Natives, "The Afrikan In Winter" by The Positive Force, "Neveen" by Salah Ragab, "Ja Mil" by Hastings Street Jazz Experience, "Be There" by Leon Gardner, "Psych City" by Ohio Penitentiary 511 Jazz Ensemble, "Introduction" by James Tatum Trio Plus, and "No Jive" by Frank Derrick Total Experience. US pressing has 2 bonus tracks – "All Prasies To Allah (parts 1 & 2 edit)" by Lightmen Plus One, and "Bada Que Bash" by PE Hewitt Jazz Ensemble. CD

A surprisingly wonderful little project – one that brings together shorter snippets of Fela's classic tunes, into an extended sound collage that's got a really captivating feel! We initially expected this one to be gimmicky and a bit silly, but it's really not – and instead stands as a loving "mixtape" that showcases the best bits of Fela's genius – a keyboard solo here, a vocal chant there, all the while pushed along by the great one's groundbreaking Afro Funk rhythms! The set includes one very early number by Fela from 1964 – "Ololufe Mi" – plus bits of later tracks that include "Mr Follow Follow", "Ariya", "Unnecessary Begging", "Swegbe & Pako", "Monkey Banana", "Trouble Slee", and "Look & Laugh". ✨✧ Albert MangelsdorffBirds of Underground ... LP
MPS (Germany), 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent session by German trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff – one of his boldest efforts to date! The set's from 1972, and features a quintet that includes Heinz Sauer on alto and tenor, Gerd Dudek on tenor and soprano, Buschi Nieberall on bass, and Peter Giger on drums – a combo that's obviously heavy on the horns, and really runs free without the use of any piano! There's a fair bit of freedom in the group – but the style of the work is different than some of Mangelsdorff's more easily available recordings from the mid 70s, and the album almost feels like on on FMP – very open and improvised, without much structure at all. Titles include "Wobbling Notes & Fluted Crackle", "Xenobiosis", and "Grive Musicienne". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the most gimmicky cover images ever used to sell the music of Thelonious Monk (and Monk himself hated the image) – but a key classic from his legendary years at Columbia Records! The album's got an edge that definitely lives up to its title – even if the cover photo is a bad joke on the jazz "underground" – and Monk's working here with the amazing Charlie Rouse on tenor sax, blowing these beautifully angular lines on some tracks that never fail to grab us after all these years. Larry Gales is on bass, and Jon Hendricks does some great guest vocal work on a version of "In Walked Bud" – while other instrumental tunes include "Ugly Beauty", "Green Chimneys", "Thelonious", "Boo Boo's Birthday", and "Raise Four". The kind of record that makes us mighty proud to live in the Windy City – and a long-overdue look at the wealth of rare club, disco, and soul cuts bubbling in the Chicago underground at the end of the 70s! During the early part of the decade, the city was widely known for some super-huge soul acts – and in the 80s, house would raise Chicago to international fame – but in the space between, the city kept on putting out some really wonderful music – wicked little cuts issued on small indie labels, most of which never got any circulation outside the midwest! The Mr Peabody crate-digging team's collected together the best of the best from these overlooked years – and also threw in a few of their own edits too – furthering the dancefloor potential of some of the best rare nuggets. 2LP version features 8 cuts – including "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again" by Carmen Amez – plus seven Mr Peabody edits – versions of "Too Far Gone" by LaJohn & Sheela, "The Challenge" by Billy Hinton, "The Composer" by Fantasie, "Running To A Disco" by Lonnie Givens, "Bass Come Back" by The Moore Brothers, "Disco Ball" by Brighter Side Of Darkness, and "Your Love Is In The Pocket" by Premonition. A sweet soulful set from Herbie Mann – one that has the jazz flautist taking on the 60s sound of Memphis! The groove is great, with a heavier, funkier approach than Herbie was using on previous albums – and the tunes are all nice and long, with plenty of room for really great instrumental interplay! One of the deepest digs into the 60s girl group scene we've ever seen – a package that not only gets way way past the big hits of the time, but also provides much better sound and way more context than the sorts of dodgy CDr collections that have spotted the market for years! It's great to see Numero's magic touch turned onto this sort of world – as the songs here are all super-obscure, and served up from a wealth of rare 7" singles – but come together wonderfully in a beautiful mix of soul and rock, all showing just how many great girl group sounds were recorded back in the day! Many of these numbers are plenty darn catchy – and rival the best coming from Motown or the Brill Building scene – but also have the great distinction of being completely fresh, and backed up with the usual great Numero sense of history in the package – which includes copious notes and loads of great rare images. 2LP set features 28 tracks in all – and includes work by The Contessas, The Shades, Monzaz, Paulette & The Cupids, Toni & the Hearts, Charles Pikes & The Scholars, and lots more acts you've never heard before! DJ Deep does it again – and takes us on a magical journey across decades and cities – bringing back some lost house music gems from Chicago, Detroit, and New York – most of which are from the late 80s and early 90s independent years of the scene! There's a nicely simple sound to most of the tracks here – a style that takes house music back to the core elements of its roots without getting trapped in cliche or overplayed tracks – just simple beats, keys, and maybe a dash of vocals – plus usually a core element that develops as the track rolls on, changing slightly through the minimalist progression of the tune. 2CD set features a both mixed and unmixed disc – with titles that include "The Numbers" by Rodney Baker, "Bring U Up" by Romanthony, "Drum Drum" by Jovonn, "Let Your Body Talk" by Ace & The Sandman, "I'll Never Let You Go" by William S, "I'm So Deep" by Vincent Floyd, "Pump That Body (deep house mix)" by Mr Lee, "Motivation Song" by G Strings, "Whispers" by Ron Allen, "Rain Forest" by Lowkey, and "Feel The Fire/Urban Culture" by Naomi Danielle. A really wonderful collection – an important re-investigation of the unusual mix of sounds and styles on the New York scene in the years after disco – a time when funk, punk, hip hop, and art were all colliding at once – providing a really fresh antidote to the staid sounds of Studio 54! The "disco" in the title should be taken lightly – as these cuts didn't play at the slick uptown dance spots – but were instead the soundtrack for the cool spots happening downtown, as the previous loft culture morphed into clubs, in this very special blend of the energy of CBGB and the underground soulful dancefloors. The set list is filled with classics from this time – and titles include "Cavern" by Liquid Liquid, "Tell You Today (voc)" by Loose Joints, "Walking On Thin Ice (re-edit)" by Yoko Ono, "Over & Over" by Material, "Spasticus Autisticus (version)" by Ian Dury & The Seven Seas Players, "Kiss Me Again (original edit)" by Dinosaur, "Move" by Nicky Siano, "School Bell/Tree House" by Indian Ocean, "I Walk" by Don Cherry, "Voices Inside My Head" by Common Sense, and "Wheel Me Out" by Was Not Was. As justly revered as the Chicago scene is for the pioneering club music of the 80s is, the soul and disco of the 70s years and some of boogie and other sounds that ran parallel with the house scene in the 80s too often get overlooked. Soul Jazz (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic look at the righteous current of energy that swept through American music at the end of the 60s – that huge wave of knowledge and political inspiration that still stands as one of our favorite moments in jazz and soul! The Civil Rights generation had gotten some things accomplished, but not everything – and a new wave of action arose in various scenes of the underground – not just pushing the musical formats past anything that had happened before, but also doing so with a strong message of pride and empowerment! This collection surveys some of the best tracks of that moment – and also provides a great batch of historical notes to put the whole thing in context – done in collaboration with the book of the same name, but equally great as a soundtrack and document on its own. The package is overflowing with Dusty Groove classics – and titles include "Sweet Songs" by Sarah Webster Fabio, "Surtal Ihklas" by Doug Carn, "Vibes From The Tribe" by Phil Ranelin, "Desert Fairy Princess" by Horace Tapscott & The Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, "Sounds From The Bush" by The Mandingo Griot Society with Don Cherry, "Is It Too Late" by Duke Edwards & The Young Ones, "Strong Men" by David McKnight, "Black Narcissus" by Joe Henderson, "Malcolm X" by Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble, "Mother Of The Future" by Carlos Garnett, "Red Black & Green" by Roy Ayers, "African Rhythms" by Oneness Of Juju, and "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" by Gil Scott-Heron. ✨✧ VariousStrum & Thrum – American Jangle Underground 1983 to 1987 ... CD
Captured Tracks, Mid 80s. New Copy 2CDs ... Out Of Stock
A great look at the farther reaches of the American underground scene in the mid 80s – years after punk and post-punk modes – and a portrait of a whole generation who rose up in their wake, but maybe made music that was something else entirely! 20 years hence, these guys might have been garage rock bands – and while they've got some of that spirit, they've also learned the sharper guitar edges of the late 70s/early 80s scene – but work towards songs that are sometimes more personal, and subjects that are more down to earth. At some level, these groups are America's version of the C86 generation – but more obscure, with less polish, as they were never likely to get the airplay or press of the British scene – which is what makes the music even more compelling, especially as some of these guys were very tied to local scenes. The package is great – with an enormous booklet of notes that's worth the price alone – in support of 28 tracks that include "The Meeting" by Pop Art, "Change" by Holiday, "When Do You Say Hello" by Great Plains, "Say Goodbye" by Riff Doctors, "Misery Me & You" by White Sisters, "Is It You" by The Darrows, "Seven Steps Down" by Salem 66, "Five O'Clock" by Three Hits, "She Collides With Me" by Sex Clark Five, "All My Friends" by Primitons, "All That Stuff" by The Windbreakers, and "Trusted Woods" by The Reverbs. A really great collection of work that sets the scene for the London Underground of the 60s – that heady cultural scene that was about to burst forth and shower the world with a huge range of new music that would influence listeners for decades to come! This package isn't that music – in that most of the artists here are American, mixed with contributions from a few key Brit talents too – and the whole thing works together to showcase the sorts of sounds that were a bit inspiration on the generation that would then inspire many others to come – a mad mix of modern jazz, electronic music, avant classical, groovy vocal, and even some compelling beat/poetry recordings too – all packaged together in an overstuffed 3CD set that makes for a hell of a journey in music! Artists include Ornette Coleman, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Charles Mingus, Daphne Oram, Modern Jazz Quartet, Aldous Huxley, Cecil Taylor, John Cage, Eric Dolphy, Annie Ross, Sun Ra, Gyorgy Ligeti, Allen Ginsberg, Jimmy Smith, Luciano Berio, John Coltrane, Chico Hamilton, Alexis Korner, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Albert Ayler, Joe Harriott, and many others. Underground System was released in 1992, but it sounds like Fela's best work from the late 70s – grooving away at a triple-time beat on two incredible tracks, "Underground System" and "Pansa Pansa". "Pansa Pansa" is especially great, as it's got these Cecil Taylor-esque piano lines over funky beats at the beginning – very odd, but very groovy! LP, Vinyl record album

Another great combination of post bop jazz traditions and modern day grooves and moves. The core group is Pine with Cyrus Chestnut, Reginald Veal, Jeff Tain Watts and DJ Pogo, and thankfully like Pine's previous foray into this realm, the tracks veer more towards the core ensemble than heavily sample based or electronic numbers with some soling over top. NuSoul songstress Jhelisa contributes some vocals, and unlike so many other mid 90s jazz and hip hop fusions, this set stands up beautifully to the test of time. 12 tracks in all, including "Modern Day Jazz", "Tryin' Times", "Save The Children", "Oneness Of Mind", "Invisible (Higher Vibe)", "The Book Of. . .(The Dead)", "Children Of The Sun", "Silver Surfer" and "Underground". A double-length look at the legendary Johnny's Disk label from Japan – and important indie that forged new ground for jazz at the end of the 70s, and also opened the way towards lot of creative experimentation for years to come! Johnny's wasn't just a jazz label, though – and instead it echoed some of the genre-crossing modes that were also taking place in other Japanese scenes at the start of the 80s – styles that are really emphasized here on CD 2, which is titled "Under Ground" – in contrast to the "Jazz Ground" of CD 1! The modes on CD 2 are a mix of avant rock, jazz improvisation, and other modes – sometimes playful, sometimes dark – and the styles on CD 1 are often warmer, and represent a strong Johnny's Disk contribution to the warm piano trio modes of 70s Japan. 23 tracks in all – with work by Lee Won Hui, Sonoda Mayumi, Ktayama Mitsuaki, Nakayama Eiji, Kingkong Paradise, Sakamoto Teru, Itakura Katsuyki, Kondo Kouji, Miyoshi Youji,Terui Ken & Aterui Jazz Gakudan, Oguri Hitoshi, and Hayasaka Koukou. Great work from a Nashville group who just seem to get better and better with each new record – a combo that's all instrumental, but who deliver a really rich sound on their mix of keyboards, tenor, guitar, bass and drums! Previous records stated older sound library material as an inspiration – but these guys also have a flavor that's all their own, and are a fair bit different than other groups who are trying to recreate the styles of 70s sound library funk – maybe in part because we hear a lot of soulful Tennessee currents in the mix – way wah guitar, cool compressed horns, and sweet keyboard lines that maybe resonate more with the instrumental side of Stax Records during its hipper 70s years, particularly some of its soundtracks. A warm return to funky form for the New Mastersounds – working here in an instant-classic groove that recalls the glory days of the Memphis scene! The group's instrumental sound is supported by some extremely burning work on Hammond – sweet and soulful licks that remind us a lot of the sound of Booker T in the late 60s, backed up by some guitar work that shifts easily from uptight and scratchy, to superdope and mellow. The album changes things up nicely from track to track, going for grooves that blend in a lot of different modes, and which show the group to be really expanding their format. Strut (UK), 2016. Used ... $6.99
Legendary reedman Idris Ackamoor is strongly back in action – working here with a new version of his classic Pyramids group from the 70s – with a groove that's every bit as righteous as their classic albums from back in the day! In truth, Ackamoor has been going strongly over the previous few decades – working on the west coast underground in a mode that's every bit as spiritual and righteous as his more famous material – which means that this new set is hardly some rescue from obscurity, and more just a focus of the spotlight on all the great sounds that Idris has been giving us on his self-released CDs! Yet this new album is definitely something extra-special, too – as Strut have given Ackamoore a real chance to open up with a group that also features the great Babatunde Lea on percussion, as well as two female singers who really help deliver the message in the music. Iris himself plays alto and tenor – and titles include "Rhapsody In Berlin", "Whispering Tenderness", "Clarion Call", "Traponga", "We Be All Africans", "Epiphany", and "Silent Days". CD

A funky treasure trove from Apple & The Three Oranges – a group we hardly know at all, but who really blow us away with the cuts on this collection! The groove is plenty hard right from the get-go – the best of the funky 45 underground of the early 70s – which means that there's more 60s rawness on the record than you'd get from bigger-label funk at the time – as Ed "Apple" Nelson still works here with a mostly underground vibe! Ed plays drums – which are mighty hard on most numbers – and his vocals have this offbeat, off-kilter, over the top quality that almost reminds us a bit of the Hank Ballard/James Brown recordings for late 60s King – particularly in the way that Nelson's completely unbridled with his energy. The whole thing's great – one of the best funky collections we've heard in years – and presented with a rich amount of notes and historical information too. By the time of this landmark album, Dorothy had been knocking around the jazz world for a number of years, but it wasn't until she hooked up with Richard Evans at Cadet Records that her sound really began to cook – breaking down genres and expectations in the trademark style of the best late 60s sides from the Chicago underground. The record's got a bit of funk, a bit of jazz, and a heck of a lot of soul – and the setting works perfectly for Dorothy's harp, giving it a lot more room to work around than some of her smaller jazz combo albums. Spiritual Unity sets the stage for a format that would become huge in the European avant scene of the 70s, 80s, 90s, and even today – the sax-driven power-trio, tenor against bass and drums, working freely with less rhythmic constraints than before, searching for new sounds and new modes of expression, working through changes in a style first proposed by Sonny Rollins, but taken to new intensity by the New York underground of the 60s. That sound is summed up here perfectly by Ayler, Gary Peacock, and Sunny Murray – working together with an edgey brilliance, on classic tracks that include "Ghosts: First Variation", "Ghosts: Second Variation", "The Wizard", and "Spirits". 50th Anniversary Edition – also includes the bonus track "Vibrations". It's one of those mindblowing pop transformations on par with the Beatles (who the Beasties and Dust Brothers were so brazen to sample several times on this album) and the Beach Boys on the pop maturation scale from earlier hits to later artistry – even if the wild lyrics and deft back & forth rhymes by the Beasties aim to be the goofy antithesis of maturity. From classic rock dinosaurs to soul and disco classics, from the Jaws score to "Dueling Banjos", it all finds it's way into the beatcraft – and both mainstream pop and underground hip hop are better now because of this record. Tracks include "Hey Ladies", "Shake Your Rump", "High Plains Drifter", "Shadrach", "Johnny Ryall", "Eggman", "Car Thief", "What Comes Around", the "B-Boy Bouillabaisse" suite and more. George BensonWeekend In London ... CD
Provogue, 2020. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
George Benson is no spring chicken – but damn, he sounds plenty darn youthful here – working at the Ronnie Scotts club in London with some tight jazz funk backing! Benson sings as much as solos on guitar – and the whole thing is a great throwback to the sound of his 70s records – both in terms of the choice of tunes, and the overall spirit – that undeniable charisma that pushed George from the soul jazz underground to superstardom – a quality that's never let up over the years. Titles include "The Ghetto", "Give Me The Night", "Love X Love", "Turn Your Love Around", "In Your Eyes", "Feel Like Makin Love", "Cruise Control", "Affirmation", "Moody's Mood", and "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight". Gary BiasEast 101 ... CD
Nimbus, 1981. New Copy ... $9.99
A dream of a record from the LA spiritual underground of the 70s – and one of the only records we've ever seen from reedman Gary Bias! The date's got a soulful depth that makes it one of the most compelling albums on the legendary Nimbus label – a rhythmic pulse that's often modal, and a sense of spiritualism in the solos that often has Gary stretching out strongly on alto, soprano sax, or flute – yet always with an inherent focus, and strong sense of direction! Other players are equally great too – David Tillman on piano, Rickey Kelly on vibes, Roberto Miranda and John Heard on bass, and Fritz Wise on drums – and the tunes are wonderful original numbers that mark Bias as an extremely strong voice in jazz – one that should have gotten better exposure over the years. The album's got a great Strata East sort of vibe – and titles include "As Children Play", "East 101", "Asiki", "Arthur's Vamp", and "Dear Violet". CD
Also available East 101 (180 gram pressing) ... LP 29.99
