Illinois JacquetGo Power ... CD
Argo/Universal (Japan), 1962/1966. Used ... $13.99
Go Power indeed – as the album's a really stripped down groover, and one that has the tenor of Illinois Jacquet working in spare trio formation with Milt Bucker on Hammond and Alan Dawson on drums! The record's got a sound that's even earthier than some of Jacquet's other work for Argo – partially because the session was recorded live at Lennie's On The Turnpike in Boston, but also because the tracks are longer and a bit more open-ended. Buckner's a great counterpart for the album, with a groove that's deeper than we remember – and the hip drumming of Alan Dawson helps keep things in a groovier 60s mode throughout. Titles include "Watermelon Man", "Illinois Jacquet Flies Again", "On A Clear Day", and "Pamela's Blues". CD
(Out of print, includes obi.)

JJ JohnsonEminent Jay Jay Johnson Vol 1 ... LP
Blue Note, 1953. Near Mint- ... $33.99 39.99
A great set that brings together early material that trombone giant JJ Johnson cut for Blue Note as a leader – sides that already mark his approach to the instrument as one of the most distinct of the time, and which pave the way for all the greatness that Johnson would bring to jazz in years to come! JJ's got a way of blowing his horn here that's almost trumpet-like at time – tight and focused, and perfect for the young bop generation – as he's paired on these cuts with players who include Hank Mobley and Jimmy Heath on tenor, Clifford Brown on trumpet, and either Wynton Kelly, John Lewis, or Horace Silver on piano, depending on the volume. There's plenty of other great surprises too – including a bit of bass from Charles Mingus, on a few cuts that also feature congas from Sabu Martinez – plus drums from Kenny Clarke on all tracks too. Titles on this first volume include include "Turnpike", "Sketch 1", "Capri", "Lover Man", "Get Happy", and "Coffee Pot". LP, Vinyl record album

Oscar PetersonRecital By Oscar Peterson ... LP
Clef, 1952/1954. Near Mint- ... $19.99 24.99
A great early example of the genius of mixing guitar with the piano of Oscar Peterson – a move that might have been inspired by the success of Ahmad Jamal, but which works equally well for Peterson's sound on the keys! The tracks here feature either Herb Ellis or Irving Ashby on guitar – plus the always-solid bass of Ray Brown, and some slight extra work on drums by Louis Bellson. Most of the focus is still on Oscar's incredible work on piano, but the dancing colors of the guitar are a great addition that really flesh out the sound without slowing down Peterson's groove. Titles include "Pompton Turnpike", "Alone Together", "Soft Winds", "The Continental", "Love You Madly", and "Simple Life". LP, Vinyl record album
(70s Japanese pressing with obi & insert – MV 2606.)

✨✧ Link WrayEarly Recordings ... LP
Ace (UK), Early/Mid 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The thunderous, chaotic buzzsaw rumble of the great Link Wray – a batch of the amazing earlier pulp guitar stormers from one of most legendary rock instrumentalists of all time! Early Recordings was released as an LP compilation in 1978 – comprised of his best early material. With that in mind, it's hardly worth mentioning that this is one of the best long playing collections of the great Wray ever put together – featuring many of his signature instrumental gems! Tracks include an exceedingly pulpy take on Neal Hefti's "Batman Theme" plus a bunch of tracks penned or co-penned by Wray, including "Ace Of Spades", "Cross Ties", "Jack The Ripper", "I'm Branded", "Fat Back", "Run Chicken Run", "Turnpike USA", "Mr Guitar", the immortal "Rumble", Willie Dixon's "Hidden Charms" and more! Good EP from these guys – good in that it features less of the lame vocals and raps that wreck some of their records, and instead concentrates on some of their great instrumental sounds. Plus there's some nice remix work by folks like Nobukazu Takemura and Palm Skin Productions, both of whom ad some nice touches to the Silent Poets own brand of Japanese acid jazz. Tracks include "Going Home (original & Child's View mix (Nobukazu Takemura))", "Shalom (Palm Skin Production mix)", "Answer", "Elements", "Children Of The Future (Turnpike Blues mix)", "Reverse", and "La Vie (Morocan Mood mix)". ✨✧ VariousDynamite Soul Harmony Vol 3 ... CD
Dynamite (Germany), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful! If you dig harmony soul as much as we do, then you'll really love this set – a super batch of 22 rare group soul cuts from the late 60s and early 70s, a perfect summation of that "sweet soul" sound that's always so hard to find on the reissue market. And like the first two volumes in this series, this one goes way past the hits – and includes a stunning selection of rare 45s that we never ever see on vinyl, but which deserve to be the stuff that soul legends are made of! Titles include "Different Girls" by The Naturals, "All That's Good" by The Four Jewels, "So What" by Carl Carlton, "Nothing But Promises" by The Turnpikes, "Without You" by The Norvells, "A Lonely World" by Billy & The Hi-Liners, "Baby Don't You Go" by The Perfections, "Find Me" by The Attractions, "Two Lovers" by The Voice Masters, "Peek-a-boo" by The Creations, and "This Love Of Ours" by The Sunlovers. Some of the tracks are mastered from original vinyl copies, so you will hear a spot of noise from time to time – but they still probably sound better than if you found a beat-up original! CD
