OGJB Quartet (Oliver Lake/Graham Haynes/Joe Fonda/Barry Altschul)Ode To O ... CD
Tum (Finland), 2022. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
A second great set from a group that's even greater than the sum of its parts – a formation that seems to breathe new life into the talents of the four legendary musicians who make up its core! Not that these players were ever flagging at all – but there's really something special going on here in the interplay between the alto of Oliver Lake, cornet of Graham Haynes, bass of Joe Fonda, and drums of Barry Altschul – great musicians in their own right, but really coming together with a unified sound here that's amazing! The leadoff cut on the record is a dedication to Ornette Coleman – and while there's a lot more going on here than just a Coleman inspiration, the mixture of individuality and unity is also something that Ornette would have really been proud of – handled here with a sense of urgency that's especially striking in the work of Lake and Haynes. Titles include "The Other Side", "Da Bang", "Bass Bottom", "Apaixonado", "Justice", "Me Without Bela", and "Ode To O". CD

Wadada Leo SmithTrumpet (3CD set) ... CD
Tum (Finland), 2021. New Copy 3 CDs ... $45.99 55.99
Fantastic work from trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith – maybe one of the few musicians who could hold us completely rapt throughout a 3CD presentation of completely solo material! The work was all recorded over the space of a few short days, in a church in Finland – and Smith uses his many years of sonic understanding to really open up in the space – with a quality that reminds us that although Wadada is a fantastic group player, he's also a musician who, maybe like Marion Brown, also has such a sense of self-composure that he can be equally captivating on his own – building castles of imagination throughout his effortless improvisations. The work here moves through so many different shades and currents, it never gets stale at all – and the 3CD set features over 120 minutes of music, with a big booklet of notes and images as well! CD

Wadada Leo Smith Great Lakes QuartetChicago Symphonies (4CD set) ... CD
Tum (Finland), 2021. New Copy 4 CDs ... $58.99 71.99
A fantastic package from trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith – one that's billed as "symphonies" in the title, but which instead features quartet jazz performances throughout – as you've maybe guessed by the name of the group! There's maybe a more compositional structure here than on some of Smith's other recent albums, but there's also plenty of improvisation too – served up by a fantastic group that features Henry Threadgill on alto and flute, John Lindberg on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – with saxophonist Jonathon Haffner stepping in for Threadgill on one of the four CDs in the package! Each longer piece has a slightly different vibe – and together, the music is a stunning statement of the continuing genius of Leo Smith in recent years – a masterful statement of his importance in jazz, but also a personal message that's filled with urgent intensity. Titles include "Gold Symphony", "Diamond Symphony", "Pearl Symphony", and "Sapphire Symphony". CD

Wadada Leo Smith with Milford Graves & Bill LaswellSacred Ceremonies (3CD set) ... CD
Tum (Finland), 2021. New Copy 3 CDs ... $45.99 55.99
Trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith teams up here with two different legends in avant jazz – bassist Bill Laswell and percussionist Milford Graves – in a triple-length collection that offers up the music in three different settings! Smith and Graves work together on CD1 – a sublime set of trumpet/percussion duets that really take us back to the spirit of avant improvisation in the wake of the early years of the AACM – modes that both players evoke here in their really timeless work together, on long tracks that remind us that aging improvising great never seem to lose their edge at all! Smith works with Bill Laswell on CD2 – in a series of duets that has the tones of Bill's electric bass turned down nicely – never dominating too much, so that Wadada is often ringing out in the lead with a soulful, acoustic presence. CD3 brings all three players together in trio formation – in a surprisingly balanced performance that we never would have expected if you told us the group was working together a few decades ago. 3CD set features almost three hours of music – and comes with a huge amount of notes, in a booklet that also presents some of Smith's paintings as well. Wadada Leo Smith, Vijay Iyer, & Jack DeJohnetteLove Sonnet For Billie Holiday ... CD
Tum (Finland), 2021. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Pianist Vijay Iyer has left his own very strong mark on the world of jazz in the past decade or so – but here, he's in a completely different setting, and a surprisingly strong fit for the sort of spirit we're used to hearing from trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith! The set also features drummer Jack DeJohnette – and there's a sense of dynamic interaction and sympathetic creativity that graces the entire album from the start – that special spirit that Smith always seems to bring to a recording, which really opens up Iyer on piano, Hammond, and Fender Rhodes – while DeJohnette explores the farther reaches of his spectrum as well. Titles include "Song For World Forgiveness", "Rocket", "Deep Time 1", and "The AD Opera" – a long piece dedicated to Anthony Davis. CD

✨✧ Andrew Cyrille/William Parker/Enrico Rava2 Blues For Cecil ... CD
Tum (Finland), 2022. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Three legendary improvisers – coming together in a set of music that reminds us that with work like this, they're maybe even more essential than ever! All three players have risen to new heights in recent years – giving us music under their own names that really re-affirm their place in the jazz cosmos – but here, working together on longer improvisations, they seem to knock it out of the park even more – especially Rava, whose trumpet really seems set on fire in the company of William Parker's bass and Andrew Cyrille's drums! The title of the record is a reference to two of the album's long tracks dedicated to Cecil Taylor – but in a way, the whole thing serves as such – as the trio really work forward to negotiate new space in the improvising territory opened up by Taylor many years back – on titles that include "Overboard", "Enrava Melody", "Blues For Cecil No 1", "Improvisation No 1", "Ballerina", "Machu Picchu", and "Top Bottom & What's In The Middle". ✨✧ Wadada Leo SmithString Quartets 1 to 12 (7CD set) ... CD
Tum (Finland), 2022. New Copy 7CD set ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing chapter in the incredibly rich career of Wadada Leo Smith – an artist who first rose up as a trumpeter in the AACM scene in Chicago, but who's gone on to have a huge impact on modern music around the globe – including a surprisingly strong legacy as a composer too! This set brings together pieces that Smith composed for string quartet – the earliest of which dates back to 1965, before he even made his first appearance on record – the last few of which are more contemporary, and include contemporary revisions of some of the earlier works – all of which demonstrate this amazing ear for instruments that Smith hasn't even handled himself. There's an approach to tone and inflection that's beautiful – and the work is presented here on core performances by the RedKoral Quartet – but with variations along the way – as Smith plays trumpet on two of the quartets, and others feature work from Anthony Davis on piano, Lynn Vartan on percussion, Stuart Fox on guitar, and Alison Bjorkedal on harp. A beautiful package – full of sublime sounds throughout! CD

✨✧ Wadada Leo Smith with Jack DeJohnette, Andrew Cyrille, Han Bennink, & Pheeroan AklaffEmerald Duets (5CD set) ... CD
Tum (Finland), 2022. New Copy 5CD set ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Maybe our favorite sort of setting for the trumpet of Wadada Leo Smith – the kind of spare, improvised collaborations that he's done so well since his earliest years on record – presented here in a box that features five full albums' worth of material, each done in collaboration with a key percussionist! The collection features a disc each with Smith playing trumpet and piano – in duets with Han Bennink, Pheeroan Aklaff, and Andrew Cyrille – and a final two CDs that feature Jack DeJohnette on drums, piano, and Fender Rhodes! The difference between the performances is fantastic – and not only shows that deeply collaborative spirit that makes Wadada such a great improviser, able to adapt to any setting – but also showcases the varied strands of free jazz expression on drums and percussion that have marked all of these giants as legends over the decades. We're especially in love with the CDs that feature DeJohnette – as we love his work on piano, and it's great to hear him handle Fender Rhodes – which we're not sure we've heard on record for many years. The whole thing's a beautiful overstuffed package – and part of the fantastic work the Tum label have done to document the seemingly never-ending talents of Smith in recent years! CD

Luaka Bop/Sire (Brazil), 1991. Very Good ... $28.99
After coming up with classic compilations of MPB and Samba, David Byrne and the Luaka Bop crew turn their interests to Forro – folksy party music from the Northeast of Brazil, with surprising ties to Tex/Mex traditions, but an overall approach that's more sophisticated. There's a total of 18 tracks in all, with the requisite great set of notes – and titles include "O Fole Roncou" by Luiz Gonzaga, "Asa Branca" by Gonzaguinha, "Rejeicao" by Trio Nordestino, "Chiclete Com Banana" and "Tum Tum Tum" by Jackson Do Pandeiro, "Vou Com Voce" by Dominguinhos, "Festa Do Interior" by Gal Costa, and "Recordacao De Vaqueiro" by Clemilda. ✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyAlison's Uncle/Autumn Leaves ... LP
Blue Note (Japan), 1958. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
This isn't an actual full length LP, but rather 2 previously unissued tracks from the Somethin' Else sessions, packaged up beautifully and issued on vinyl only in Japan! These tunes, along with the rest of the album was recorded at a time when Adderley was working with Miles Davis – and as such, the session features a group that includes Miles, blowing in a cool tone that's a perfect offset to Cannonball's more soulful style. The rest of the group includes Hank Jones, Sam Jones, and Art Blakey – and like John Coltrane's Blue Train, the record's more of an "special session" than the usual Blue Note album, but the strength of the players make it one of the more memorable records of its day, so it's even more special to have these extra tracks! Albert Ayler with Don CherryEuropean Recordings Autumn 1964 Revisited ... CD
Hat Art/Ezz-Thetics (Switzerland), 1964. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99
A huge 2CD set – one that features important European work that saxophonist Albert Ayler recorded with trumpeter Don Cherry! CD1 brings together six tracks from Albert Ayler's Hilversum Radio sessions from 1964 – plus an additional three tracks recorded in Denmark a few months earlier! The first six titles are a famous performance by a famous group set loose on a European tour in 1964 – Ayler on tenor, Don Cherry on cornet, Gary Peacock on bass, and Sunny Murry on drums – recorded in The Netherlands for a small audience in a Dutch radio studio! The setting is a wonderful one – a mix of the live freedoms that would really let Ayler stretch out – especially when playing overseas – but recorded with the clarity of some of his studio albums for ESP – that sharp-edged sound that really highlights the groundbreaking style of his playing! The rest of the group here is equally great, and Murray is completely freed up from rhythm at points, to fly beautifully with the rest – on titles that include "Angels", "CAC", "Infant Happiness", "Ghosts", and "No Name". The same group performs on the final three tracks – recorded in Copenhagen for Danish Radio, with an equally great level of clarity – on "Saints", "Spirits", and "Vibrations". The interplay between Ayler and Cherry is especially great – echoing the latter's material with Ornette Coleman, but with a different sort of edge! CD2 features amazing live material from 1964 – work that was recorded at the Club Montmartre in Copenhagen, right around the same time that Albert Ayler recorded his album for Debut Records – and a set that has his quartet in even more firey formation overall! The tracks are long, and Ayler is completely unbridled – at a level that really shows not only how much of a leader he was to the American avant underground, but what an inspiration he was to the European free scene too – who could only help but take a big cue from his work here on tenor! The group also features equally wonderful work from Don Cherry on cornet – sounding quite different than when with Ornette Coleman – plus bass from Gary Peacock, whose dark tones really set the mood – and drums from Sunny Murray, who is also at an explosive point in his career. The material is remastered wonderfully, with permission from Albert Ayler's estate – and titles include "Mothers", "Saints", "Vibrations", Spirits", "Children", and a shorter "Spirits". CD

Anthony Braxton/Milford Graves/William ParkerBeyond Quantum ... CD
Tzadik, 2008. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
A fantastic outing from these three legends of improvised music – set that's maybe more in the territory of work by Milford Graves and William Parker than it is the usual work of Anthony Braxton – especially for this time in his career! Graves plays drums and percussion, Parker is on bass, and Braxton leaps into the fray wonderfully as the three improvise together – drawing on energy that's much more like his Chicago roots in the AACM than his style of later years – almost as if Braxton's rewriting himself into loft jazz history and shaking loose of the mathematical formulas that often inspire his tunes! Braxton handles a range of saxes, and Graves is especially wonderful in the recorded space of the meeting – as the trio make their way through five improvised selections. CD

Calibro 35Post-Momentum EP ... LP
Record Kicks (Italy), 2021. New Copy ... $16.99 28.99
A short step forward for Calibro 35 – but a damn funky one too! The set's a follow-up to the previous Momentum album, and it shows some strong new territory after the dark days of 2020 – with a leadoff track that adds in rhymes from Ensi E Ghemon to the core cinematic funk of "Stan Lee" – presented here in two alternate versions, one of which is instrumental! Things get nice and lean on "Digi-Tails" and "Stars & Strips Chirps &Bleeps" – both of which feel like the Calibro 35 groove is stripping down in a really great way – with a very strong focus on funky drums and keyboards! Other tracks include "Being A Robot Is Awesome" and "Artificial Black Moon" – additional instrumental funky nuggets, with a nice blend of 70s funk and a few 80s instrumental elements. Early genius from The Ex – a set recorded back in the early days when the Dutch group were a punk band first, and experimentalists second – working with energy that's almost reminiscent of the Leeds scene, especially material from Gang Of Four and the early version of The Mekons! There's plenty of politics and anger in the music – served up on these short, sharp shocks that are totally great – raw guitar riffs from Terrie X, and vocals from GW Sok that almost have a Mark E Riley sense of performances – all driven on by the intense drum work of Sabien – on titles that include "Bouquet Of Barbed Wire", "Fear", "Hunt The Hunters", "Red Muzak", "The Well-Known Soldier", "Same Old News", "FUNEIDY", and "Island Race". Proof that the move to soul was actually a great thing for James Mtume – because although the set's miles from his spiritual jazz work of the 70s, it more than makes up for that shift with a sophisticated approach to 80s soul! The group's a small one, with lots of keyboards from Mtume, and a fair bit of bass at the bottom – and lead vocals are by James and Tawatha, who brings a nice sense of female sweetness to the set. Maria Rita (Maria Rita Stumpf)Brasileira ... LP
Selva (Brazil), 1988. Near Mint- ... $18.99
Not the same Maria Rita that rose to international fame in the past decade or so – but an earlier, much more obscure singer with a nicely rootsy vibe – one whose presence in the Brazilian music scene is maybe more welcome to our ears than her famous later namesake! The album came out at the end of the 80s, but has a sound that feels more like the experimental generation of MPB in the 70s – some moments that have the brashness of Gal Costa around her India album, other moments of gentleness that recall the sensitive soul of Joyce, and maybe a few slight touches of the deeper drama of Maria Bethania – and yet, like all of those artists, this Maria Rita is very much her own person – as can easily be heard by the lack of pop production or commercial efforts on this very unique album. Stanley TurrentineRough & Tumble (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $36.99 38.99
Great large group genius from tenor giant Stanley Turrentine – one of a number of 60s Blue Note albums that have Stan exploring a format that he'd use even more strongly in the 70s! Here, the results are superb – thanks in strong part to the great Duke Pearson, whose growing talents as an arranger are perfect for the sound of Turrentine's horn – warmly soulful and lyrical, but still with a nice sense of bite – one that's furthered by work from James Spaulding on alto, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Pepper Adams on baritone, Grant Green on guitar, and McCoy Tyner on piano. The whole thing comes of wonderfully – with some open tunes that never feel too tightly constricted, which results in some great solo moments – on the tunes "Baptismal", "Feeling Good", "Shake", "Walk On By", and "And Satisfy". ✨✧ Anthony Braxton/Milford Graves/William ParkerBeyond Quantum ... CD
Tzadik, 2008. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
CD

✨✧ Johnny ColesKatumbo (Dance) ... LP
Mainstream, Early 70s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sweet album of soulful jazz from trumpeter Johnny Coles – a wondeful talent who made a rare few albums as a leader! The record is quite different than Coles' earlier work for Epic and Blue Note – in that it's got the slightly electrified Mainstream sound of the 70s firmly in place – with electric and acoustic piano from Cedar Walton and electric and acoustic bass from Reggie Workman. Tracks are longish, and while they're not exactly all-out funky, they mostly groove pretty nicely – in a spiraling fragmented sort of way. Titles include "Funk Dumplin", "Petits Machins", "Betty's Bossa", "728", and "Never Say Goodbye". LP, Vinyl record album

A standard-setting record from the Manhattan Jazz Quintet – that strong return to acoustic modes that made the combo such a breath of fresh air in the 80s – at a time when so few jazz groups were content to just focus on doing their thing! The head genius here is pianist David Matthews – whose arrangements are as dynamic as you'd hear for a large ensemble, yet performed with razor-sharp energy by Lew Soloff on trumpet, George Young on tenor, Charnett Moffett on bass, and Steve Gadd on drums – all players who get plenty of individual moments in the spotlight on the album's longer tracks. ✨✧ James TatumContemporary Jazz Mass ... LP
JTTP/Be! (Germany), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A jazz mass, but unlike any other variation on the theme that's ever been recorded – thanks to a very righteous performance from James Tatum – who makes the whole thing feel much more like an organic spiritual jazz set than anything you'd ever find in a church! James himself plays both Fender Rhodes and piano – at the helm of a progressive combo from the Detroit underground of the early 70s – a group that features soprano sax from Theodore Buckner, trumpet from Judge Gray, tenor and alto from Louis Barnett, and trombone from Norman O'Gara – all lesser-known players, but who work beautifully alongside James' lead! The Fender Rhodes work is wonderful – as great as you'll find on any other record of the time – and there's also two singers who add to the sound – but step out at all the right moments to let the solos open up. Titles include "Gloria", "Offertory", "Holy Holy Holy", "Amen", "Lamb Of God", and "Communion" – but the overall sound is way more than you'd expect from those titles! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ StumpwaterMotel In Saginaw (with bonus 7 inch) ... LP
Drag City/Galactic Zoo Disk, 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Aurora, Illinois may never have given the world that much – but now the city can rightfully claim its place in the rock and roll cosmos – as the home of this fantastic early 70s album from Stump Water! The group have a sound that's a lot sweeter than their name – and are a trio, with a wonderfully harmonic sound – mixing acoustic guitars with their voices, at a level that's maybe somewhere in the territory of America or Simon & Garfunkel – but a bit darker, and more personal too! These guys are clearly of the generation inspired by the changes in the post-CSNY universe – modes that allowed a certain sort of singer or songwriter to really move past folk standards, and really open up the best blue-eyed inspirations in their music. Titles include "Motel In Saginaw", "Frozen Man", "Cockcrow", "Growing Time", "The Hermit", "Blind Darkness", "Now That He's Passed Away", and "Romantic Courtship Turns Into Boring Marriage Blues". LP, Vinyl record album
(Totally great bonus – the album includes an original pressing of their lone 45 from 1976 – with the songs "Watcher's Brawl" and "White Washed Afternoons".)

Milestone, 1962/1963. Used ... $9.99
Rare work by Cannonball Adderley – recorded in the early 60s, but not issued until after his death! The album features live material – recorded in Tokyo and San Francisco – performed by Cannon's amazing sextet that includes Joe Zawinul on piano, Yusef Lateef on reeds, Nat Adderley on cornet, and the rhythm section of Sam Jones in bass and Louis Hayes on drums. Tracks are all long and grooving – with a sublime mix of the earlier soul jazz that Adderley forge in the late 50s, with some of the more exotic traces that were coming into the group through the work of Lateef. Titles include "New Delhi", "Peter & The Goats", "This Here", "Jive Samba", "Primitivo", "Autumn Leaves", "Dizzy's Business", and "Never Say Yes". CD

Fantastic live material from Cannonball Adderley – a set that features material from a time when the alto player was really hitting his early stride, and maybe making even better material in a concert setting than in the studio! The bulk of the set features a 1961 performance at the Olympia in Paris, and there's a few earlier cuts from 1960 – and all tunes feature the great group of Cannonball on alto, Nat Adderley on cornet, Victor Feldman on piano and vibes, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Haynes on drums – a very classic lineup that comes off perfectly throughout! The tunes are wonderfully long, and stretch out with the imaginative solos that always makes live work by the group so great – on titles that include "Dis Here", "The Chant", "Jeannine", "Autumn Leaves", "Sack O Woe", "Serenity", "Arriving Soon", "Lisa", "In Walked Ray", "Bohemia After Dark", and "New Delhi". Joe AlbanyPortrait Of An Artist ... CD
Elektra/Wounded Bird, 1982. New Copy ... $3.99 11.98
A great portrait of an under-recorded artist – Joe Albany's last album ever, recorded for Elektra records during their early 80s run of straight jazz sides! The record's got a spare, personal quality that's similar to Albany's other late work – but it's a bit more professionally put together too – not slick or commercial, but recorded quite thoughtfully, with clearly a lot of care in getting all of Joe's charms through on the record. There's a tentativeness to his keyboard work that's great – a sort of hesitation, then quick move forward with surprising grace – balancing beautifully in ways that warm us to his music even more than before. Other players include Al Gafa on guitar, George Duvivier on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums – but the record really has a main focus on Albany's piano lines. Titles include "Ruby My Dear", "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry", "Autumn In New York", "They Say It's Wonderful", "For The Little Guy", and "Too Late Now". CD

✨✧ Jaime Delgado AparicioEl Embajador Y Yo (plus Jaime Delgado Aparicio Y Su Trio) ... CD
Vampi Soul (Spain), 1964/1966. Used ... $6.99
An amazing little soundtrack – written in mid 60s Peru by jazz pianist Jaime Delgado Aparicio, but easily on a par with some of the best American or Italian scores from the time! The music's got a really wonderful feel throughout – jazz at the core, but with touches of spy soundtrack scoring and some of the lighter, more comedic modes of the Italian scene. Delgado uses a core combo with heavy piano, percussion, and some great trumpet and tenor – almost with the tightness of the Basso-Valdambrini group – but he also expands the sound with bits of strings and some fuller orchestrations, used to shade in some amazing colors that roll, dip, and turn with the beautiful grooves penned for the set. The whole thing's tremendous, with equally great production that creates some odd twists and turns that further keep things interesting as the album rolls on. Titles include "Elm Embajador Y Yo", "Sexy Surf", "Llegando A La Capital", "Isometria", "Todo El Mundo Me Persigue", "Lucha En El Mar", and "La Arana". Added to the soundtrack is Jamie's 1964 album – Jaime Delgado Aparicio Y Su Trio – a crackling bit of piano jazz from the Peruvian scene of the 60s – and a record that's somewhere between the best of Horace Silver on Blue Note, and some of the Brazilian bossa trios of the time! There's a strong sense of rhythm throughout – round, rolling basslines punctuated by great work on the drum kit – all topped by beautifully lyrical lines from Delgado Aparicio on piano – filled with color, light, and life throughout – and soloing with a depth that's rare for such a young player! Titles include a great version of Horace Silver's "Sayonara Blues", plus "The Climate", "Autumn Leaves", "Walkin", and "Blue Daniel". CD

Ocium (Spain), 1949/1951/1952. Used ... $9.99
Beautiful work from the vastly under-rated Georgie Auld - a tenorist with a sweet tone, but one who could also play with a nice edge when he wanted! The set brings to light work that Auld recorded for the Discovery label in 1949, and the Coral label in the years 1951 and 1952 – featuring a total of 24 tracks, most of which were only ever issued on 78 rpm recordings! The group's are largeish on most of the tracks – 8 to 10 players usually – and a few of the tracks feature Georgie blowing with the Jud Conlon Rhythmaires. Titles include "Nashooma", "Vox Bop", "Settin The Pace", "Room With A View", "Early Autumn", "On The Alamo", "You've Got Me Jumpin", and "Hollywood Bazaar". CD

Fantastic! We love Burt Bacharach in so many ways that it's easy to forget the genius of these early A&M sides – but going back to them is always a treat, and it's wonderful to hear the way that Burt lays down his own work when given the chance! You know the tracks – "House Is Not A Home", "Bond Street", "Reach Out For Me", "Are You There", "Windows Of The World" – but you may not know the arrangements, which are superb – quite different than the more famous vocal versions you've probably heard ad infinitum, and recorded at a level that brings a whole new magic and majesty to 60s pop! An essential record for any fan of all things groovy – and an album of new pleasures each time we hear it! LP, Vinyl record album

Chet BakerAlbert's House ... CD
Beverly Hills/Liberation Hall, 1973. New Copy ... $12.99 14.99
A lost little gem from Chet Baker – recorded with a gentle, homey feel that we really like! The album's not one of the standouts in Chet's catalog, but it's got a personal, almost intimate quality that we find really compelling – almost a broken soul sense of playing, with Chet stumbling a bit amidst relaxed backings by a small combo that includes Barney Kessel on guitar, and Paul Smith on piano and organ. The tunes are nothing fancy, but often quite nice – and the set includes a number of original tunes written by Steve Allen that get past the obvious Baker numbers. Titles include "Albert's House", "Farewell San Francisco", "Time", "How Dare You Sir", "End Of The Line", "Life", and "Sunday In Town". CD

Chet BakerLive In Paris – The Radio France Recordings 1983/1984 ... CD
Anagram, Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $24.99 29.99
Chet Baker in the 80s was a really wonderful thing – hardly the sound of an aging musician stumbling towards the end of his life, as so many others tend to paint this time – and instead, a continually-creative individual who was really finding ways to get around his losses and make some tremendous new sounds in the process! One of the greatest things about Chet during these years was his sense of an unusual style of group – and that's definitely the case here as he works on both recordings with a drum-less trio – the great French pianist Michel Grailler on both sets, and either Dominique LeMerle or Riccardo Del Fra on bass – the latter of whom is a player who appeared on some of the best Baker recordings of the final decade. Tracks are nice and long, filled with unusual changes, and some wonderful phrasing from Baker – very different than the early days, but equally beautiful! Titles include "Arbor Way", "Walkin", "Lament", "Just Friends", "Stella By Starlight", "Easy Living", "But Not For Me", and "Funk In Deep Freeze". CD

Gato BarbieriCaliente ... CD
A&M, 1976. Used ... $5.99
One of Gato Barbieri's later recordings – but don't hold that against it! The set's a smoother effort than most of Gato's earlier work, but it's also still pretty darn soulful – done in a way that allows plenty of space for his raspy reed work on tenor to flow over the top of larger arrangements that have a nice electric touch. Players include Eric Gale and Joe Beck on guitars, Don Grolnick on keyboards, and Mtume and Ralph MacDonald on percussion – both of whom give the tunes a nice earthy undercurrent when needed. And while we might be put off by the larger, more heavily-arranged sound – Gato himself is still in charge of the charts, and keeps things nicely focused in a soulfully expressive way! Titles include "Firelies", "Fiesta", "Europa", "Don't Cry Rochelle", "Behind The Rain", "Los Desperados", and "I Want You". CD

The album soars along beautifully – with Brownie in the lead amongst an unusual, but well-chosen batch of players that includes Herb Geller and Joe Maini on alto saxes, Walter Benton on tenor, Kenny Drew on piano, Curtis Counce on bass, and Max Roach on drums – all grooving alongside Clifford on the album's nicely extended tracks. The album was released after Brown's death in 1956, features the side-long tracks "Caravan" and "Autumn In New York". CD also features a bonus take on "Caravan" – much shorter, called "Caravan (The Boss Man)". CD

Teddy BryantIn The Beginning ... LP
NBN, 2021. New Copy ... $9.99 19.99
The first solo album from Teddy Bryant – an artist with a background in other jazz, funk, and soul projects – but who here delivers a nice lean groove that's heavy on keyboards, and which stands as a tribute to some of the legendary artists who inspired his music! This isn't a rehash of 70s Motown or 80s electro – as Bryant's definitely in a space that's all his own here – often stretching out keyboard instrumentals over spare beats, but also singing in this nicely understated style that makes the vocals feel more as if Teddy were inspired to sing by everything else going on in the cut – rather than make his voice the first part of the performance. Titles include "Autumn Love", "Lakes & Streams", "I Want You", "Strangers In Love", "Are You Lonely", "Stay With Me", and "Take You On A Trip". LP, Vinyl record album

RL BurnsideBothered Mind ... LP
Fat Possum, 2004. New Copy ... $19.99 21.99
Gritty revival blues from RL Burnside – and a record that really broke his music into a wider audience! Of course, it helps that the set features guest appearances from Kid Rock and Lyrics Born – the latter we enjoy more than the former – but the overall vibe is still very much in the best spirit of Burnside's other music – on titles that include "Detroit Boogie (parts 1 & 2)", "Someday Baby", "Goin Down South", "Go To Jail", "Bird Without A Feather", "Glory Be", "Goin Away Baby", "Rollin & Tumblin", and "Stole My Check". ✨✧ John Cameron/Alan ParkerAfro Rock – KPM 1130 ... LP
KPM (UK), 1973. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
African rhythms, jazzy instrumentation, rock inspiration, and a motherlode of funky sound library grooves from two of the best British maestros working in the business! The album's an early 70s gem from the KPM catalog – one of the most sought-after records ever issued by the label – and like the rest, never really made for public sale back at the time! Despite that humble origin, though, the grooves here are right up there with the funkiest work coming out from that side of the Atlantic at the time – a brilliant post-colonial blend of acoustic percussion, electric keyboards, and a fair bit of fuzzy guitar – all presented with a stripped-down, no-nonsense approach to the rhythms that's often funkier than work by some of the bigger names in the genre. Titles include "Heavy Water", "Ice Breaker", "Solid Satin", "Punch Bowl", "Frozen Steam", and "Black Light" by Alan Parker – and "Swamp Fever", "Range Rover", "Survival", "Afro Waltz", "Heat Haze", "Rocking Rhino", and "Afro Metropolis" by John Cameron. Canned HeatCanned Heat/Boogie With Canned Heat ... CD
Liberty/BGO (UK), 1967/1968. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
The first two full albums from Canned Heat – back to back in a single set! First up is the self-titled Canned Heat – a seminal blending of blues roots with some of the new energy taking place on the Bay Area scene in the 60s – that great "old is new" approach that worked wonderfully for a few key groups – especially those like Canned Heat, who were committed to bringing plenty of their own styles into play! Sure, the music is blues – but there's a lot more flavors and styles going on here – acoustic guitar used alongside fuzzier electric, in a blend of country and city blues – but also taken to some trippier touches that reflect the psychedelic era that spawned them! Tracks are spare and simpler than on later albums, but already showing the group's distinction – on titles that include "Big Road Blues", "Help Me", "Dust My Broom", "Catfish Blues", "Rollin & Tumblin", "Goin' Down Slow", and "Evil Is Going On". Boogie With Canned Heat is the record that really broke Canned Heat out of the pack – still plenty bluesy, but with the trippier touches you might guess from the cover's psychedelic image – a perfect summation of that unique placement the group had on the late 60s Cali scene! The record's the one that gave the world the landmark "On The Road Again" – a tune used in countless films and commercials over the years, and graced with the completely unique vocals of Bob Hite – a singer who doesn't care if he sounds authentic, and who's more than happy enough to bring his own spirit to the music! That statement also defines the rest of the group too – as they let loose on titles that include "World In A Jug", "My Crime", "An Owl Song", "Fried Hockey Boogie", "Amphetamine Annie", "Whiskey Headed Woman No 2", and "Turpentine Moan". Canned HeatHallelujah/Cookbook (with bonus track) ... CD
Liberty/BGO (UK), 1969/1970. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
Two albums from Canned Heat – back to back in a single set! First up is Hallelujah – a late 60s classic from Canned Heat – a record that captures the group during that moment when their unique blend of styles was really on fire! There's a grittier, almost noisier vibe going on here at times – fuzz turned up a bit more than before, and maybe a bit more attitude – as if the group were getting spurred on by some of the societal changes at the end of the 60s, and shaken out of any reveries of the past! The set's filled with very heady tunes – titles that include "I'm Her Man", "Sic Em Pigs", "Do Not Enter", "Big Fat", "Huautla", "Get Off My Back", and "Down In The Gutter But Free". Cookbook is a set that's billed as "best of" Canned Heat, but which also features some material that wasn't on their full length albums for Liberty too! The package is a great summation of all the stuff that makes the group so great – and yes, it doesn't feature some of the longer jams of their double albums from the period, but does hone in on the way they blend together blues inspiration and psychedelic influences so well – on titles that include "Goin Up The Country", "Amphetamine Annie", "Rollin & Tumblin", "Time Was", "On The Road Again", "Fried Hockey Boogie", "Same All Over", "Bullfrog Blues", and "Sic Em Pigs". CD features new mastering – and the bonus track "Let's Work Together". CD

John ColtraneImpressions – Graz 1962 ... CD
Hat Hut (Switzerland), 1962. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Fantastic material from an important early tour of Europe by the John Coltrane Quartet – tracks recorded in Graz, Austria – and a perfect example of the group as they were really beginning to stretch out and explore! At some level, the vibe here is like the famous first run of Village Vanguard sessions by Coltrane – but the sound shows just how much the players had opened up since the previous year – really tremendous work from the leader on both soprano sax and tenor, McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums! Coltrane's solos are long and freewheeling, with a beautifully exploratory, yet soulful vibe – and titles include "Inch Worm", "I Want To Talk About You", "Autumn Leaves", and "Impressions". CD

✨✧ John ColtraneLive In Japan ... CD
Impulse, 1966. Used 4 CDs ... $69.99
4CDs – and some of the most far-reaching work that Coltrane ever recorded! The package expands the much shorter 2LP set that once was the seminal Live In Japan recording – a late concert performance showcasing 'Trane at his most out, featuring Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders as well as Rashied Ali's propulsive drumming. Lengthy takes of "Leo" and "Peace on Earth" are spread out across very long takes – often running for well over 30 minutes – as 'Trane's ideas spill forth, continuously building momentum. One of the definitive statements of "energy-jazz", and a recording that has gone onto become one of Trane's most-hailed albums ever! Other titles include "Afro Blue", "Crescent", and one of the most "out" versions of "My Favorite Things" you'll ever hear! CD

John Coltrane & Johnny HartmanJohn Coltrane & Johnny Hartman ... CD
Impulse, 1963. Used ... $3.99
A landmark album of vocal jazz – and one of the few sessions that John Coltrane ever cut with a singer! In a way, the album's more Hartman's than it is Coltrane's – given that Johnny's warm, mellow style of singing isn't as free and open as Trane at his most adventurous – but at another level, the album's got a great approach to Coltrane's gentler side, one that wasn't showing up on a lot of his Impulse albums of the time. Overall, the album's got an extremely haunting quality, and McCoy Tyner's piano adds as much to Hartman's hip voice as Coltrane's mellow tenor. Titles include some well-chosen moody standards – including "Lush Life", "Dedicated To You", and "Autumn Serenade". CD
