The first full album from the great Fred Neil – recorded for Elektra Records in the years before his underground fame on Capitol – and with a sound that's maybe a bit more bluesy overall, but in a very cool way! Fred's songwriting strengths are very much at play here – as almost all songs are originals – but there's also a tighter focus that compresses most numbers to the 2/3 minute range – instead of making them more of the wispier workouts of later years. The group's quite an interesting one – with on guitar and dobro from Pete Childs, bass from Felix Pappalardi, and harmonica from John Sebastian – all at a young point that has them bringing plenty of folk blues inflections to their performances, but in a way that's completely free of any hoke or cliche. Writer Jon Savage has given us some great dips into key years of the 60s – thanks to a wonderful series on Ace Records, which offered up a special mix of styles on every disc – but this time around, he focuses on a few years at the start of the 70s – and serves up an all-rock collection with a really heavy sound! Fantastic mid 70s sounds from The Masqueraders! Everybody Wanna Live On may very well be the best album ever by this sweet southern vocal group – produced and arranged by Isaac Hayes, who'd always had a big hand in the group's sound. The record's got a style that reminds us of mid 70s Manhattans, but perhaps with more of an edge on some of the vocals, especially on the more uptempo tracks. Includes the great cut "Please Don't Try (To Take Me Away To The Sky)", with a nice electric piano groove and funky vocals, plus "(Call Me) The Traveling Man", "Sweet Sweetning", "Baby It's You", "Everybody Wanna Live On", and "Your Sweet Love Is A Blessing". A really rich second album from Ripple – a group who took awhile to return to the studio, but really developed a lot in the process! The combo started out as a straight funk act – but here, they really take off with a tight approach to their instrumentation – razor-sharp work on guitar, keyboards, bass, and percussion – soaring off into the clouds with energy that more than matches the image on the cover! Given their Atlanta roots, there's a vibe here that's a bit like some of the best Tommy Stewart material of the time – and Floyd Smith produces the group on the record, really finding a great way to blend everything together, but without ever losing an edge! One of those mixed-bag soundtracks that often showed up for lesser films of the hippie generation – a set that features some vocal rock tunes done especially for the movie, plus some much better instrumental tunes that really stand out! The real standout track here is the title instrumental "Time To Run" – but that's a really great one, with a fast funky cop show feel overall. There's clearly a religious bent to the film – most evident on the trippy "Alleluia", clearly a church track with chorus vocals, but done in a slightly tripped out way that's kind of spooky. Lost soulful sounds from Osiris – one of the many high-concept funk ensembles to spring up in the wake of Earth Wind & Fire – and one of the better ones too! The combo's got some mighty tight grounding in the bass work of Tyrone Brunson – stepping out here in an early role to really help forge the group's groove from the bottom up – basslines with percussion, then jazzier elements on the top – including some wicked work by Fred Wesley & The Horny Horns! Those added horns really pack a lot of punch on the record – working perfectly with the group vocals that step out on most of the numbers – maybe not in ways that are as righteous as you'd guess from the title or the cover, but plenty darn groovy overall. An excellent recent album from modernist trumpet giant Ted Curson! The set was recorded in Japan – in a very respectful format that has Curson exploring a number of different idioms from previous years. The best tracks are long drawn out numbers with a modal/modern groove – Curson's solo work augmented by some great soprano, alto, and flute solos by Mark Gross. A few of the tracks have Curson playing in a style that's oddly more in a funky soul jazz mode – featuring Ted doing versions of "Watermelon Man" and "Flip Flop & Fly", both with vocals! Other tracks include "Reava's Waltz", "Song Of The Lonely One", "Flatted Fifth", "Tears For Dolpy", "Lin's Garden", and his classic "Quicksand". CD

A pair of classic early 80s soul albums from ex-Dramatics singer LJ Reynolds! The self-titled '81 set is killer material in a modern Detroit mode all the way through – with top-shelf production by Reynolds, Don Davis, and Ronnie McNeir/ Ronnie, who'd been lost to the industry for a few years, also re-emerges as a writer on the songs "Southern Pearl", "Lonely Superstar", and "Ain't No Woman Like My Baby". The real standout, though, is the amazing cut "Key To The World", a killer steppers track that has a hook that won't quit, and this wonderful brassy finish that gives the track a really triumphant sound that works perfectly with the righteous lyric. LJ Reynolds' sounds great on '82's Travelin', too – stepping even more strongly away from his work with The Dramatics, and emerging as one of the best male soul acts of the early 80s! The production on this one is split between Reynolds and Don Davis, in a mode that's contemporary, but which allows LJ plenty of space for old school vocal expression – that far-reaching style of singing that always made him stand out strongly from the pack! There's a sublime mellow version of Aretha Franklin's "Call Me" on the set – and other tracks include "Words", "Trust In Me", "Say You Will", "You & Me", "Let Me Satisfy You", and "Fast Action"... These MPS sessions are essentially identifiable for the relaxed, soulful warmth that came so naturally from the atmosphere of the home of producer/engineer Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer – who manned the booth as well as provided the venue. A wonderfully obscure set of work from Gary Williams – not the blues singers you might expect from the title, but a northwest Pacific country singer who drew plenty of inspiration from the Jimmie Rogers blues folk legacy – which he then served up with a tighter postwar flair! Williams recorded for a number of small labels in the late 50s and 60s – Verve Records is the best known, and the most unusual, given that they mostly issued jazz – and this collection brings together 34 tracks from the short but strong legacy of his singles, with a surprising depth that really contrasts with his obscurity.
