David S Ware —
Balladware ... CD ThirstyEar, 2006. Used ...

The title says it all – as the record's a session of ballads recorded by modern tenor giant David S Ware – done in a mode that's filled with soul and imagination, and a sense of care that possibly makes the album one of Ware's greatest in many many years! The group here is a quartet of familiar players – Matthew Shipp on piano, William Parker on bass, and Guillermo Brown on drums – but Ware is clearly the star of the set, and rolls out quietly contemplative solos that are awash in earthy phrasing – sounding a bit like some of Archie Shepp's best recordings in a similar mode from the late 70s. And in case you worry that David's getting soft with these ballads, there's no fear of that – because his interpretation of the tunes is still free-thinking and complex – a record that can stand proudly next to the best of his older catalog. Titles include "Yesterdays", "Dao", "Autumn Leaves", "Godspelized", "Sentient Compassion", and "Angel Eyes". CD
Tim Berne on alto sax, Marc Ducret on electric guitar, Craig Taborn on Fender Rhodes and electronics, and Tom Rainey on drums. CD

The last album in the legendary run of records from Ginger Baker and the brothers Adrian and Paul Gurvitz – a heck of a power trio, but one that comes across in a very different way than Baker's famous work in Cream! If anything, Ginger's drums have more of a funk current than before – a really powerful driving force at the bottom, while Adrian riffs around all over the top and edges of the tunes with these well-crafted guitar lines that don't even need a solo to find their voice – wickedly emphasizing the vocals on tunes that include "Flying In & Out Of Stardom", "Neon Lights", "Mystery", "Thirsty For The Blues", "My Mind Is Healing", and "Smiling". LP, Vinyl record album

Black Flag —
Damaged ... LP Unicorn/SST, 1981. Very Good+ ...

An unmitigated blast of punk, worthy of setting the stage for the American hard core movement! While punk rock had been firmly established by the time this album came out, no one was prepared for the next level that Black Flag would take things to with this brutal, nihilistic, stripped down assault on the status quo! A classic that will stand up for ages, wit fist in the air anthems like "Rise Above", "Six Pack", "What I See", "TV Party", "Police Story", "Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie", "Thirsty & Miserable", "Depression", "Padded Cell", "Damaged I", "Damaged II", "Life Of Pain", "Room 103" and "No More". LP, Vinyl record album
Wild sounds in a range of different styles – jazz, rock, and more outside modes – all served up in support of a legendary list made years ago by the group Nurse With Wound! The list was a secret guide to all things weird and unusual – put together decades back, and now famous as kind of a Rosetta Stone for stepping into music from the farther left side of the spectrum – here served up from a range of German recordings from back in the day, most recorded during a key moment when the scene was really breaking down boundaries in styles! There's a fair bit of electric elements here, and you'll recognize a few artists as being heroes from the prog and MPS generations – on titles that include "Fritz Muller Traum" by Fritz Muller, "Jazzi Jazzi" by Tomorrow's Gift, "Output" by Wolfgang Dauner, "Black Sand" by Brainticket, "Trauma" by Gomorrha, "Big City" by Thirsty Moon, "Snakeskin Tango" by Brainstorm, "Scorpion" by Association PC, "The Executioner" by My Solid Ground, "It Loves Want To Have Done" by Anima Sound, and "It's So Nice" by Ex Magma. LP, Vinyl record album
