The first in Wynton Marsalis' excellent Soul Gestures trilogy – a set that features some especially nice work from Joe Henderson on tenor sax! The set was recorded at a time when Henderson was really coming back into his own – and the long, extended tracks on the record really let Joe stretch out with the sort of freely expressive solos honed over previous decades of work! Henderson's presence brings a sharpness here that you might not expect – and a deeper sense of soul than some of Wynton's previous stiffer attempts at modernism. Other players include Marcus Roberts on piano – another great presence on the date – Bob Hurst on bass, and Jeff Watts and Elvin Jones on drums. Beautifully heavy sounds from Black Market Brass – a group who started out with more of a global funk approach, but who emerge here with the intensity of some lost funky soundtrack – all with the sort of edge you might expect from the cover! The style here is really revolutionary – unlike anything else we've ever heard from a group with "brass" in their name – in part because the group has some very cool distortion on the keyboards and guitar, which gives those electric elements a very sinister sound next to the straight ahead fire of the horns – served up with really hard-driving rhythms throughout, in a way that seems to pull together older traditions of Afro Funk, Nola Brass, and even some of the southern college bands – but all with a very 21st Century vision. The best yet from Flying Lotus – who we keep allowing ourselves to believe has hit an insurmountable peak with each new record – but he just keeps getting better! Thumping underground soul from Shawn Lee! "So Much Trouble" is a moody little track with a deep, bassy thump propelling the track along with some wickedly dense drumming and bouncy production touches that make is thick and funky as it is lean! Pivotal Black Ark material from Lee Perry – with brilliantly tripped out echoey dub production – and scorching instrumentation laid down by the mighty Upsetters! Split roughly in half between Perry's nicely gritty instrumental moodcraft and hazy vocals, this collection features some uber prime Upsetters material. It's all hear – heavily rumbling bass grooves, tripped out, though spiritually resonant vocals and just enough of smoky haze without getting too thick to breathe. Amazing stuff! An unusual little book – one that's partly an instruction guide, but also a great look at the power of posters in the 20th century – filled with historical examples that are used alongside the oversized pages on instruction! The text within is relatively loose and open – presented poster-style, really – but it does a good job of structuring the presentation of other materials, with is very vivid throughout – and pretty interesting, even if you never plan on making a poster yourself! But if you do, the book's also pretty handy too – because the pages are all nice and thick, and you could easily cut them out, pull them apart, and use them for letters, stencils, or whatever else you might need for a poster too. 119 pages, softcover, in color. Probably the best package of Hank's work we've ever seen! The set collects 42 of Hank's tracks from the late 40s and early 50s on 2 CDs, along with a thick book of biographical notes and photos. Pretty much all of the essential tunes are here, including "I Saw The Light", "Cold, Cold Heart", "Hey, Good Lookin'", ""Your Cheatin' Heart", ""There's A Tear In My Beer", "Lost Highway", "Lovesick Blues", and the rest. As with so many other repackaged sets, the biggest excuse to justify spending even more money on old Hank are the rarities – which include several tracks he recorded early on as Luke The Drifter – including "Ramblin' Man", "I Dreamed About Mama", and "Please Make Up Your Mind". You also get several rare versions, included a couple of live captures from the Opry. We're eating our hat here, but we just can't deny that Mercury managed to churn out another essential Hank set! Somehow, someway, Bob Dylan and Columbia Records can keep returning to the well of unreleased material – and draw jaw droppingly brilliant recordings that are mostly unheard to the general population of non Dylan diehard archaeologists! Here lies the fabled Witmark Demos – early recordings of treasured Dylan classics and rarities alike recorded raw and unencumbered, just Dylan's voice, guitar and occasional harmonica or piano – recorded in 1962 for Leeds Music (a few) and M. Witmark & Sons (most of 'em) in the early-to-mid 60s. Dylan was one of the first wave of 60s folk songwriters brought into the Tin Pan Alley machinations, a pretty amazing moment considering that this gruff, nasal voiced figure was soon to revolutionize popular music and there's no way Witmark could have known it. William De Vaughn may never be remembered for anything else – and the poor guy will always be mistaken for Curtis Mayfield by record shoppers everywhere – but he really out-Curtised Curtis on the super-dope original version of "Be Thankful For What You Got", one of those righteous soul tunes that everybody knows, everybody loves, but which was recorded by an artist that nobody can remember.
