Soul jazz vocalist Dwight Trible gathers the forces for this magnificent effort – an album pairing his emotionally rich vocals and singular spirit with a group of largely west coast allstars – and it's pure genius! The Life Force Trio, from what we can tell, is simply the moniker for a small army of free thinking guests from the deep funk, hip hop and turntablist underground assembled by Carlos Nino of Ammon Contact. The guest list includes SA-RA, J Dilla, Madlib, Daedelus, Scienze Of Life, Nate Morgan, Dwight's Build An Ark fellows and many others. It features some vocals Dwight has laid down for other albums, and some unreleased recordings – how they pair up so intricately well, with such fresh and varied production is a beautiful mystery. This record could have merely served as an interesting exercise in combined talents, but instead it absolutely soars, and could be remembered as Dwight's masterpiece! It may also be one of the best Ninja Tune albums ever! Sweet LA soul jazz from trumpeter Bobby Bryant – an oft-overlooked player with a hard hitting sound that was a bit like Nat Adderley! The album's one of Bobby's best (and few) – and it's got a really groovy little feel, almost in a Jazz Crusaders mode – with a small combo playing live on tight bouncy little tracks that still have some nice room for solo work. The Crusaders reference is a clear one – as Joe Sample's in the group on piano – and other players on the record include Hadley Caliman and Herman Riley, both of whom play tenor. A special live set, dedicated to the head of the unique Three Blind Mice label – and done in the best freewheeling style of pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto! The record's got even more bite than some of Yamamoto's other albums of the time – a soulful groove that has lots of left hand action on the groovers, which sets things up differently for some of his more melodic moments on the solos. The trio features Akira Daiyoshi on bass and Toshio Osumi on drums – and all tracks are nice and long, especially the 16 minute title track! A record with "blues" in the title, but a set that's pure jazz all the way through – and very much in the best spirit of the Three Blind Mice label in the 70s! Guitarist Sunao Wada is working here with a really wonderful group – Masaru Imada on piano and organ, Isao Suzuki on bass and cello, and Tatsujiro Obara on drums – all players who can swing straight one minute, then open up to new ideas and arrangements the next – taking the soul jazz roots of Wada's guitar into some really great territory as the modes and instrumentation shift over the course of the record. Beautiful sounds from Japanese guitarist Sunao Wada – a player who's rich in tones and colors here, and not just the blue ones mentioned in the title! There's an open flow to the record that's really wonderful – maybe the maturity of the Wes Montgomery sound of the late 60s, but set up in an earlier sort of style – with Hammond from Ushio Sakai, bass from Mitsuaki Furuno, and drums from Arihide Kurata – all given the impeccable production touches you'd expect from the Three Blind Mice label! Takao Uematsu adds a bit of tenor to the record, and titles include "Now See How You Are", "Blues World", "Falling In Love With Love", and "Blues For Charlie Christian". CD

A cooking little record from Japanese guitarist Sunao Wada – one with plenty of offbeat touches! Like many of the albums on the Three Blind Mice label from the time, this one's a bit hard to peg – because the moods and styles shift a bit from track to track, and there's an openly exploratory approach to the music that's really trying to find its own space in jazz! Some numbers are straighter bop, but others have a more unusual approach to rhythm that really opens things up – using the guitar in different ways, and having the bass and drums work their lines with unusual phrasing and sounds that really keep things interesting. Other instrumentation includes alto sax from Kenji Mori, piano from Takehiro Honda, and flugelhorn from Kunji Shigi – and titles include "Sick Thomas", "Coco's Blues", "Guitar's Time", and "One's Blue". CD

Twin alto sax work from the leaders – blowing here together with a really rich sound that almost feels like some of Phil Woods alto-heavy dates from years back, but with a vibe that's more 70s Japanese as well! The pair are both great soloists on their own – and step out in the lead on boppish tracks, but with phrasing that's far beyond just hokey Charlie Parker cliches – given an even more modern sense of expression through the quintet's use of guitarist Kazumi Watanabe, alongside bass and drums. The set features 11 minute takes on both "Lover Man" and "Scrapple From The Apple" – plus the side-long original "Blues For T&O", which runs for 19 minutes! CD

A really compelling set from this important Japanese group of the 70s – a quartet headed up by guitarist Masayuki Takayanagi – but which features a very complex balance of work from all the individual members! The set initially begins with a traditional vibe, but then seems to step out with each new track – almost encompassing a history of modern jazz in the music, then moving past with its own sense of invention! Masayuki's guitar rings out on the spare "The Blues", which begins – but then moves aside for free flute work from Kenji Mori on a mindblowing take of "You Don't Know What Love Is" – almost handled with a late Dolphy vibe. "Sun In The East" has the ensemble moving boldly together – with double drums and percussion from Joe Mizuki and Hiroshi Yamazaki – and the set concludes with the extended "Free Form Suite" – a tune that definitely lives up to its name! CD

Not "Misty" in an Errol Garner sense – although Tsuyoshi Yamamoto serves up his own version of the tune here – and instead a hip set from the Three Blind Mice scene of the 70s, with a very open, freewheeling approach to piano trio work! Yamamoto's a bit straighter than some of his contemporaries on the label, but still finds a way to really open things up with a fresh approach – a style that's strongly helped by the round, warm bass tones of Isoo Fukui – who's a great counterpoint to the jaggedly brilliant solo work from Yamamoto himself. Tetsujiro Obara plays drums, and the album's a masterpiece of space and understatement – with titles that include "Yesterdays", "Misty", "Blues", and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes". CD

Love is a many splendored thing – and so is the mighty piano work of Kunihiko Sugano – a great Japanese player from the 70s, but one who never got much exposure on our shores at the time! This live album really shows Sugano at his best – balancing a talent for flowing, lyrical moments with a tighter sense of a groove – laid down perfectly by a combo that features conga added to the usual lineup of bass and drums! Most tunes are nice and long, and begin with a solo statement by Kunihiko – then snap into a groove that really takes off nicely. Titles include the original "Blues For Wynton Kelly", a side-long reading of "Perdido", and versions of "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" and "Autumn Leaves". CD

Great work from one of the most dynamic Japanese pianists of the 70s – a player who's straighter than some of his contemporaries, but also has a very soulful swing as well! Tsuyoshi Yamamoto really opens up in a live setting – and concert dates like this represent some of his best work ever – a really open, flowing format that has Yamamoto moving in territory that's a bit like Oscar Peterson at his live best – but which also allows for a bit more of the free play that Japanese trios of the time were hitting. The group features excellent work on bass from Akira Daiyoshi and drums from Shinji Mori – and titles include "Like Someone In Love", "Cookin The Blues", "Summertime", and "The Way You Look Tonight". A record that's far more beautiful than you'd guess from the "carcass" in the title – a strong set of vocal work from singer Kimiko Kasai – easily one of the hippest Japanese singers of the 70s! Although Kasai's sometimes straight on the album, she also stretches out in freer, more expressive modes – at a level that's quite similar to some of the more experimental modes used by Karin Krog during the same period – although with a slightly unique feel as well. Backings are from the quartet of reedman Kosuke Mine – whose lines on soprano and alto sax are almost worth the price of the album alone – and all tracks are long, with titles that include "Be Still My Soul", "Round Midnight", "Yellow Carcass In The Blue", "Alone Together", "River Dry", and "Blues In C Minor". Hidehiko Matsumoto may have the nickname of "sleepy", but his playing is anything but – and at the time of this recording, he was easily one of the greatest saxophonist working the Japanese scene! The style of the album has Matsumoto right out front on most numbers – getting backing from piano, bass, and drums – but often in ways that are somewhat restrained and spacious, in the Three Blind Mice mode of the period. Sleepy plays his usual tenor sax, plus some great flute too – and titles range from mellow, introspective tunes that really showcase his lyrical side – to a few faster tunes that take off with a very nice edge. Titles include "Duke's Days", "Chasin The Blues", "You Don't Know What Love Is", "Typhoon", and "Right Down Step". CD

The New Herd of Toshiyuki Miyama was one of the greatest large ensembles in Japanese jazz during the 70s – and here, they've got an extra-special sort of sound, thanks to the presence of guitarist Kozaburo Yamaki – who not only solos on all tracks, but also wrote some great original material for the record! Yamaki's tunes have this rising sort of majesty that makes the Herd sound even more powerful than usual – some spiritual currents they don't always have, and which are underscored both by the guitar lines, and the way the rhythms build nicely on the longer tunes. Titles include "Sunday Thing", "Friends", "Plain Song", "Sweet Heart Blues", "Soft Rain", and "Memories". CD

Who cares? We care! And it's hard not to – given the strength of this sweet little set from Japanese bassist Takashi Mizuhashi – a hell of a player who really knows how to keep things exciting throughout! The group's got some tremendous talent in the front – both Fumio Karashima on piano and Yoshio Otomo on alto and soprano sax – each players who get plenty of time in the spotlight, driven onto heights by Mizuhashi's bass – but sometimes in a very subtle way, too. Karashima plays Fender Rhodes a bit – which we really love for his spacious handling of the keys – and Takashi sometimes bows the bass in a way that makes for these really magical sound next to the Rhodes. The set's definitely on the more soulful side of the Japanese jazz spectrum from the 70s – and titles include "Blues For Andrew", "Who Cares", "Sometime Ago", "Deep In My Thought", and "In A Little Spring Waltz". Laura's one of those key 60s talents who started writing for others, then got the chance to spread her wings on her own – and while her own recordings have really continued to reach new audiences over the decades, it's great to have a package like this to remind us of Nyro's songwriting roots! The debut album from Tyrone Davis – a supreme achievement for the Chicago soul scene of the late 60s, and a record with a sound that would set the standard for years to come! Tyrone had been bumping around as a blusier singer before this set – but here, working with arrangements by Don Myrick and Willie Henderson, he gets a sound that's sweet and soaring – taking a rough-spirited soul, and recasting it in a sweeter sound for the 70s. Tyrone's not lapsing into bluesy cliches here, and instead keeps things wonderfully soulful by hitting a loping groove that picks up his beat and gives the songs a nice lilt. You can hear this to best effect on the title track "Can I Change My Mind", but all tracks are great – including "She's Looking Good", "Call On Me", "Open The Door To Your Heart", and "Have You Ever Wondered Why?". A supremely wonderful album from The Modern Jazz Disciples – a great little combo who had a much more cooking sound than any other groups of the time with "modern jazz" in their name! The group have a distinctly soul jazz sort of approach, but one that has enough modern touches to warrant their name – and although the group hailed from the Ohio scene, which was one of the reasons why they probably never got their due back in the day, a record like this really stands as a great testament to the wonderful energy that was going on in local US jazz spots in the postwar years! The horn work in the set is really wonderful – played by Curtis Peagler on alto sax and William Hickey Kelly on normaphone and euphonium, both horns that really add some unusual colors to the set. Rhythm is tight, sharp, and extremely soulful – thanks to fluid piano from William Billy Brown, bass from Lee Tucker, and drums from Roy McCurdy, who'd later go on to greater fame.
