Maybe not as "street" as you might think from the group's name – or from the fake graffiti on the cover – but a pretty nice little mainstream soul album, and one that's almost a precursor to later New Jack sounds to come! The group's a trio – Sandi Alexander, Paul Christopher, and Manzel Lamar – and they've got a nicely stripped-down approach to 80s soul, one that gets past some of the cliches that were holding back some of their contemporaries, especially on the ballads. Five years have passed since Blank Generation, but Hell's wit and energy are as sharp as ever – and if anything, The Voidoids have really fused into a really cohesive unit – not a slicker band, but one that has a powerful sense of instrumentation to match Richard's vocals – especially in the great guitar work of Robert Quine! And heck, even the album's version of Glen Miller's "Moonlight Serenade" manages to come off like a funk tune! Artistry is a live set from Deodato – but one that's very much in the mode of his best CTI studio sessions – with soaring, over the top keyboard work that's totally great – backed by some tightly compressed guitar, bass, and drums, with just enough funk in the mix to keep things interesting! Early recordings by John Lee Hooker and his Coast To Coast Blues Band – recorded in Detroit in the late 40s through the early 50s. The Coast To Coast Blues Band may be a little misleading in the title, as the recordings find Hooker with only the sparest accompaniment on bass, drums, and guitar if any accompaniment at all – but it's the good kind of misleading, because you don't want anything getting in the way of the foot stomping, soulful blues vibe of John Lee Hooker on these early cuts! An assortment of recordings from Bud's legendary years in Paris – tracks recorded between 1957 and 1961, with players that include Clark Terry, Zoot Sims, Barney Wilen, Kenny Clarke, and Daniel Humair. Tracks are mostly short – about as short as those on Bud's studio sides from the time – but the album does feature two nice long cuts, versions of "Groovin High" and "Blue Bud Blues/52nd Street Theme", both of which run for around 12 minutes each. Other tracks include "Buzzy", "Shaw Nuff", "Omicron", "Yesterdays", and "No Problem". Tracks were previously released by Mythic Sound, but are represented here with new remastering! CD

One of the most soulful records we've heard in years from the late pianist Harold Mabern – and that's saying a hell of a lot, as Harold gave us plenty of soulful sets during his many years on the planet! The record is as fantastic as you might guess from the title – as Mabern takes on tunes made famous by John Coltrane, but delivers the goods in this soaring style that's very much his own – and maybe most specifically, at a level that recalls the vibe he first hit in the 60s when playing with Lee Morgan, and then took to even newer heights on some of his fantastic 70s material – particularly recordings with reedman Frank Strozier! Here, the reeds are handled by Eric Alexander on tenor and Vincent Herring on alto – a hell of a pair – and the group also features really strong work from Steve Davis on trombone, who's really at the top of his game throughout. The rest of the group feature the familiar team of John Webber on bass and Joe Farnsworth on drums – both also really rising to the occasion – and although we'll not be hearing much from Mabern in years to come, this set is a hell of a farewell.
