Strawberry Alarm ClockIncense & Peppermints ... LP
Uni, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $43.99
Dreamy dreamy pop psych from Strawberry Alarm Clock – a great late 60s group who skirted the worlds of Sunshine Pop and more jamming garage rock! This album's got a lot more to offer than you might guess from just the title hit – as the instrumentation sometimes gets nicely tripped out – with cool use of organ, harpsichord, and guitar – plus plenty of special effects in production – and even some of the song styles and lengths are unusual too, making the album way more than just a batch of cute little tunes. Titles include the classic "Incense & Peppermints", the 8 minute jammer "The World's On Fire", the instrumental "Pass Time With SAC", and the cuts "Paxton's Back Street Carnival", "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow", "Strawberries Mean Love", and "Unwind the Clock". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing. Cover has a cutout hole and light wear.)

Although best known for their big hit "Incense And Peppermints" (included on this CD), the Strawberry Alarm Clock were great at turning out tight little pop psychedelic tracks. This 21 track CD contains loads of them, and features their full first album, plus lots of other rare cuts. Tracks include "Strawberries Mean Love", "Sea Shell", "Hummin Happy", "Black Butter", "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow", and "The World's On Fire". CD

Mike WoffordStrawberry Wine – The Jazz Piano Of Mike Wofford ... LP
Epic, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $4.99
Excellent early work from pianist Mike Wofford – a player who'd show up more strongly in the 70s, but who's already in great form here in this early 60s session! The album's quite unique – not the mainstream piano trio material that you'd expect from a major label at the time, and more in a mode that recalls the early experiments of other 60s players like Don Friedman or Steve Kuhn – with an open sense of tone that rings out beautifully, and a way of breaking down rhythmic conventions in support of the sound. The overall album's still quite straight, but with a great deal of fresh feeling, especially for the time – and Mike's trio on the date includes John Doling on bass and John Guerin on drums. Titles include "Kay Note", "Moment", "I Know Your Heart", "Whim", "Three For All", and "Strawberry Wine". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a small cutout hole and some staple holes in one corner.)

A&M, 1976/1977. Near Mint- (pic cover)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Completely sublime! Shuggie Otis first wrote and recorded "Strawberry Letter 23", but it took The Brothers Johnson, and some smooth Quincy Jones production to make it a hit! The track loses none of it's original trippy soul in this version – and if anything, the better vocals really take it over the top! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Jowe HeadStrawberry Birthmarks ... LP
Glass Modern (UK), Mid 80s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
You might know Jowe Head from his work in Swell Maps and Television Personalities – and this rare solo set has the best hallmarks of his work in either group – some of the amazing sonic experiments of the Swell Maps, mixed with the wit that Jowe brought to his music in TVP! The tunes have an unusual quality – that muted experimentalism that marked the Glass Records label during its short 80s run – almost a legacy inherited from the earliest days of Rough Trade, at a time when that label was going big on the charts – leaving a true indie like Glass to put out overlooked genius like this. Titles include "Carrot & Cane", "Son Of Tar Baby", "Cooling Fins", "Some Other Day", "February", "Chad Valley", "Nearest Faraway Place", and "Snake Eggs". LP, Vinyl record album

Mose AllisonMose Allison – The Complete Atlantic/Elektra Albums – 1962 to 1983 (6CD set) ... CD
Atlantic/Strawberry (UK), 1960s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 6CD ... $42.99 59.99
A really wonderful collection of music – work that has an already-great artist taking off into all these new directions of his own – completely reinventing himself as the jazz generations moved on, always with a really strong sense of wit and imagination! Mose Allison first emerged as a bop pianist in the 50s, but soon added a unique vocal approach that was a bit New Orleans-tinged, but with a beat jazz sensibility too – a style that was a huge influence on the UK mods in the 60s, and countless others over the years! By the time Mose hit Atlantic Records in 1962, he was already perfecting that style – then opening it up to other elements as the 60s moved on, often hitting some wilder, more unusual approaches that just kept coming through the 70s! As he shifted over to Elektra Records at the end of that decade, he stepped slightly back to more traditional jazz vocal modes – but still also kept penning his own great tunes, often with themes that maintained his unique sense of wit and vision. The box features a whopping 104 tracks on 6CDs – 12 full albums that include I Don't Worry About A Thing, Swingin Machine, Word From Mose, Wild Man Is On The Loose, Mose Alive, I've Been Doin Some Thinkin, Hello There Universe, Western Man, Mose In Your Ear, Your Mind Is On Vacation, Middle Class White Boy, and Lessons In Living. Brian BennettVoyage – A Journey Into Discoid Funk (with bonus tracks) ... CD
DJM/Strawberry (UK), 1978. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
A really heady record from British drummer Brian Bennett – an artist known for both jazz and funky sound library work – here stretching out in a mode that really fits the image on the cover! The tunes are longer than some of Bennett's earlier sound library material – almost a mix of progressive energy with jazzier funk – a lot cooler than the disco reference in the title might imply! The set's got tremendous keyboards from Francis Monkman – who handles all the spacier elements, while the drums of Bennett works the rhythms with bass from Alan Jones – on long tracks with plenty of complexity, but also plenty of groove! Titles include "Voyage", "Solstice", "Chain Reaction", "Pendulum Force", "Air Quake", and "Ocean Glide". 2CD version features a full CD of bonus material – including 7" single mixes of "Pendulum Force" and "Ocean Glide" – and working mixes of every track on the album. Atlantic/Strawberry (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 38.99
Way more than just another collection of work by The Drifters – as this 3CD set goes way past all the other greatest hits compilations on the market, and brings together all sorts of wonderful overlooked tracks from their later years on Atlantic Records! At this point, former singer Clyde McPhatter and Ben E King have left the flock – leaving most of the lead work to Johnny Moore, and a bit to Rudy Lewis – in a lineup that maybe has the group even more unified as a whole, with a tremendous sense of harmony vocals that just keeps getting better and better as the 60s move on – and as the group try out all sorts of new rhythms and songs in the process. We really love The Drifters, and can't get enough of their special sound – and this set features plenty of unusual cuts to really keep our interest – a set of 76 tracks that includes "Up In The Streets Of Harlem", "We Gotta Sing", "Aretha", "Baby What I Mean", "Up Jumped The Devil", "I Dig Your Act", "You & me Together Forever", "Black Silk", "Desafinado", "Follow Me", "Come On Over To My Place", "Answer The Phone", "I Remember Christmas", "Spanish Lace", "I Don't Want To Go On Without You", "He's Just A Playboy", "Saturday Night At The Movies", "Looking Through The Eyes Of Love", "The Outside World", "My Islands In The Sun", "You Can't Love Them All", "Country To The City", "Still Burning In My Heart", and lots more! Strawberry (UK), 1960s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 4CD ... $29.99 38.99
A fantastic package of work from British singer/producer/arranger Mike Hurst – a huge talent who's not that well known on our shores, but who had a hand in a huge amount of classic recordings in the 60s and 70s! This set is a huge introduction to Mike's many talents – and although we know one or two of his full albums, and see his name on many famous records, it's clear that we only were seeing the tip of the iceberg compared to the material on this set! CD1 brings together early singles that Hurst recorded under his own name, at a time when he was a catchy singer trying to break into the world of British pop. CD2 features two rare albums issued by Capitol at the start of the 70s – Home and In My Time, both of which show this really strong development of Mike as a singer/songwriter, with his own production strengths helping things out even more! CD3 and CD4 really open things up – as they bring together a huge amount of classic Mike Hurst work behind the scenes – working as producer and songwriter with a host of legendary talents and ultra-hip British acts – artists who include PP Arnold, Barry St John, Warm Sounds, Murray Head, Chris Farlowe, Alan Bown, Spencer Davis Group, Marsha Hunt, Bobby Lee, Nirvana, Colin Blunstone, Hardin York, The Move, Fingertips, Fumble, Fancy, Nolan Sisters, and many others – some of whom are represented here by songs that appear here for the first time. 92 tracks in all – with very detailed notes! Strawberry (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 38.99
A really well-titled compilation – one that gets at the special mix of music that was happening in the London mod scene of the 60s – a blend of styles that's way different than was going on here in the US at the time! There's certainly some bigger names on the collection – but the real appeal is the way those artists mix with others that never crossed the Atlantic back in the day – jazz singers, blues artists, ska/rocksteady singers, and even some UK soul artists who round out the collection and really help make a bridge between different styles! Most tunes are upbeat and pretty darn groovy – supported by a big booklet of notes that offers details on every one of the 87 artists within – a large lineup that includes Duffy Power, Richard Kent Style, Ronnie Jones, Zoot Money, Trendbender Band, Barry St John, The Chantelles, Bo Street Runners, Mark Wirtz, Rainbow Ffolly, Katch 22, Heinz, The In Crowd, Belfast Gypsies, Kevin King Lear, Artwoods, Pretty Things, Creation, David Bowie, Barney J Barnes, Rupert & The Red Devils, Andy Ellison, Plastic Penny, Australian Playboys, The Shame, Truly Smith, The Alan Bown, and many others. ✨✧ Shuggie OtisInspiration Information ... CD
Epic/Luaka Bop, 1974. Used ... $8.99
An insanely wonderful album! Shuggie Otis is the son of Johnny Otis – the LA R&B maestro who was moving heavily into funk at the end of the 60s – and he has this tripped out, super-dope guitar style that he played to strong effect on Johnny's albums of the late 60s and early 70s, and on his first two solo albums, which were kind of bluesy in tone. For this album, though, he shocked the world by moving into a stripped-down mode that pairs his guitar with spare drum machine rhythms, flanged-out deeply soulful vocals, and one of the most laidback conceptions of funk you'll ever hear. The album's a landmark – one of those gems that's unlike anything else you can think of, but which will redefine your concept of what you want in a record for years to come. Every track's a winner – and the whole thing's a perfectly unified batch of tunes that includes instant classics like "Inspiration Information", "Island Letter", "Aht Uh Mi Hed", "XL 30", and "Rainy Day". Plus, this reissue features 4 tracks from Shuggie's Freedom Flight LP – including his original version of "Strawberry Letter 23", and "Sweet Thang", "Freedom Flight", and "Ice Cold Daydream". CD

A fantastic classic from The Band – a set that's hardly got them cowering in the corner the way the "stage fright" title might imply – and which instead seems to have the group at their most confident during the early years, effortlessly spinning impeccable musicianship and some surprisingly biting lyrics! The young Robbie Robertson is on guitar, Garth Hudson warms things up with organ lines, and vocals are handled by the shifting array of other players in the lead – Rick Danko, Levon Helm, and Richard Manuel. Titles include "The Shape I'm In", "Sleeping", "Strawberry Wine", "Just Another Whistle Stop", "Daniel & The Sacred Harp", "Stage Fright", and "Time To Kill". LP, Vinyl record album
(50th Anniversary pressing – remixed and remastered, with unreleased original track sequence!)

✨✧ Phil UpchurchPhil Upchurch ... LP
Marlin, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the sweetest fusion sets ever recorded from guitarist Phil Upchurch – a set that's less trippy than his earlier albums, but one that more than makes up for that with a tightly soulful groove! Production is by John Tropea and George Benson – and you can definitely hear their touches here – giving Upchurch a strong sense of focus, yet still allowing plenty of room for those cool sounds and odd lines on his guitar. Arrangements are great throughout – partly handled by Leon Pendarvis, who also plays keyboards on the record with Richard Tee – and augmented by string and flute backings from Deodato. Titles include a great take on "Strawberry Letter 23" – plus "Free", "Good Times", "Church Street Station", "It's Almost Five", "Foolin Around", and "Cyrenna". LP, Vinyl record album
