Miss Abrams & The Strawberry Point 4th GradeMiss Abrams & The Strawberry Point 4th Grade Class ... LP
Reprise, 1970. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A pretty great record from one of the coolest school teachers you could ever hope to have – the lovely Miss Rita Abrams, a hippie who was teaching in Marin County at the start of the 70s! The set's a project done by Abrams with her fourth grade class – a set that mostly features original tunes penned by Rita, filled with joy, hope, and the sort of optimism that characterized the Marin County scene of the post-Haight years – and performed with a cool blend of acoustic instrumentation next to Abrams keyboards – with some larger arrangements from Ed Bogas, who'd later work on hip soundtracks for Fantasy Records, across the Bay. There's nothing hokey about the set at all – as the tunes are great, and the kid-quality of the vocals is really kept to a minimum – more used to underscore the warmth in Rita's lead, and surprisingly never cloying at all – a lot like some of the best singer/songwriter projects on Reprise at the time, especially given Rita's cool electric keyboards. Titles include the cool single "Mill Valley" – plus "Floating Away", "Wonder", "Building A Heaven On Earth", "Running In The Green Grass", "Sweet Summertime", and "I Never Asked". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the insert. Cover has a cut corner.)

20th Century/Harkit (UK), 1970. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
"It's not a sequel – there's never been anything like it." Finally, an awesome reissue of the classically groovy camp soundtrack to "king of the nudies" Russ Meyer's crazy non-sequel to Valley Of The Dolls – one of the greatest exploitation movies of all time! The music is almost unbelievably great for what was essentially supposed to be an X-rated cheapie (little did 20th Century Fox know) – with a wonderfully huge & string heavy score by composer Stu Phillips, insanely groovy, stomping mod rock from the Sandpipers, Strawberry Alarm Clock, and the film's busty real-life Playboy Bunny heroines the Carrie Nations/Kelly Affair! This is a limited, extended edition that runs nearly an hour and includes bonus tracks and a few priceless dialogue snippets from the film – packaged with a thick booklet with cast and filmmaker bios and reminiscences, all the photos you could hope for, and soooo much more. Z Man says it best –"This is MY happening, and IT FREAKS ME OUT!" Titles include the Carrie Nations tunes "Find It" and "Come With The Gentle People", the Strawberry Alarm Clock's "Girl From The City" and "I'm Coming Home", the Sandpipers groovy "Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls Theme", and tons more. ✨✧ Strawberry Alarm ClockWorld In A Sea Shell ... LP
Uni, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic sunshine pop from the Strawberry Alarm Clock – an album that's a bit trippy, a lot sunny – and just the right mix of psych and harmony soul! There's some wonderful overlooked nuggets on the record – tunes that go past their chart hits, and which really remind us that the group was definitely a cut above most of their contemporaries – with these edges and surprises that really keep things interesting. The mighty George Tipton helped arrange some of the best cuts – and titles include the massive "Barefoot In Baltimore" – a perfect bridge between the earlier 60s harmony sounds, and the headier mode of the later generation – as well as the tracks "Sea Shell", "Lady Of The Lake", "A Million Smiles Away", "Shallow Impressions", and "Eulogy". LP, Vinyl record album

Billy MartinStrawberry Soul ... LP
Return To Analog (Canada), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99
A stunning little instrumental set from trumpeter Billy Martin – a player from the New York scene of the 60s, but who recorded this standout record way up in Canada – where it forever became one of the funkiest records to ever get issued north of the border! Every cut's an instrumental, and trumpet isn't the only instrument taking the lead – as there's great sax solos, organ lines, and plenty of riffing guitar – all stepping out with a sharp energy that makes the whole record feel like you're sorting through a pile of fierce instrumental funky 45s! Great gritty grooves throughout – and titles include "Funky Feelin", "One More Time", "Egg Roll", "It's Your Life", "Moon Ride", "Stax", and "Watermelon Man". LP, Vinyl record album

Grover WashingtonSacred Kind Of Love – The Columbia Recordings (Strawberry Moon/Then & Now/Time Out Of Mind/No Exit/All My Tomorrows/Soulful Strut/bonus tracks) (5CD set) ... CD
Soulmusic.com (UK), New Copy 5 CDs ... $29.99
All of Grover Washington Jr's albums for Columbia – brought together in a special box set! Strawberry Moon has a number of laidback groovers, with some solid Washington originals such as the title track and some sweet covers. BB King plays and sings on "Caught A Touch Of Your Love", with Jean Carne guesting on "The Look Of Love". Grover's sax is soulful and sweet throughout, and the titles include "Strawberry Moon", "Summer Nights", "Keep In Touch", and "Maddie's Blues". Then & Now is a nice one that has Grover working in a straighter jazz mode for the most part, taking a break from the soul and R&B groover –- the most timeless of the 3 albums compiled here! Players include Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Grady Tate and Darryl Washington. Titles include "Just Enough", "French Connections", "Stolen Moments", "Stella By Starlight" and more. Time Out Of Mind's title track is a cover of the Steely Dan classic, circa Gaucho – and this album finds Grover embracing the 80s a lot more than his previous album for Columbia. A mix of moods, with some electric funky flourishes and fusiony keys and synths. Titles include "Jamaica", "Sacred Kind Of Love", "Fly Away", the title track and more. Next Exit is great 90s work from Grover Washington Jr – a set from a time when the reedman was still one of the kings of mainstream soulful fusion! There's a bit of vocals from time to time, and some strong R&B production – but also plenty of room for Grover's well-crafted lines on soprano sax, which are still as soulful and slinky as ever! Titles include "Your Love", "Only For You", "Next Exit", "Greene Street", "Summer Chill", "Get On Up", and "Till You Return To Me". All My Tomorrows is an overlooked gem from reedman Grover – recorded in his later years, but a set that's actually got more of an acoustic style overall – one that goes back to the roots farther than any of Grover's fusion records! Washington's a great straight player in this setting – filled with soul on tenor and soprano sax – and working with top-shelf small group players like Eddie Henderson on trumpet, Hank Jones on piano, Bobby Watson on alto, and Robin Eubanks on trombone. Guitarist Romero Lumbambo arranged one great Brazilian-tinged number – and other arrangements are by Grover, Larry Willis, Slide Hampton, and Freddy Cole – who sings on two tracks too. Titles include "E Preciso Perdoar", "Happenstance", "All My Tomorrows", "Nature Boy", "Flamingo", and "Estate". Soulful Strut is bouncy soul from Grover Washington – a set that returns to his earlier roots in a space between soulful fusion and R&B! The slinky Washington soprano sax gets plenty of space in this set – blown with those seductive notes that always made Grover one of the most distinctive players on the instrument – and the backings often have this gentle R&B groove that's even stronger on the few cuts here with vocals. Titles include "Soulful Strut", "Bordertown", "Village Groove", "I Can Count The Times", "Headman's Hunt", and "Can You Stop The Rain". CD set also features bonus tracks – "Protect The Dream", "Heat Index", "Every Day A Little Death", and "The Night Fantastic". CD

Mike WoffordStrawberry Wine – The Jazz Piano Of Mike Wofford ... LP
Epic, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Excellent early work from pianist Mike Wofford – a player who'd show up more strongly in the 70s, but who's already in great form here in this early 60s session! The album's quite unique – not the mainstream piano trio material that you'd expect from a major label at the time, and more in a mode that recalls the early experiments of other 60s players like Don Friedman or Steve Kuhn – with an open sense of tone that rings out beautifully, and a way of breaking down rhythmic conventions in support of the sound. The overall album's still quite straight, but with a great deal of fresh feeling, especially for the time – and Mike's trio on the date includes John Doling on bass and John Guerin on drums. Titles include "Kay Note", "Moment", "I Know Your Heart", "Whim", "Three For All", and "Strawberry Wine". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original yellow label pressing – a great copy! Cover has a small cutout hole in the corner.)

✨✧ A Certain RatioTo Each ... LP
Factory, Early 80s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $34.99
The first full album recorded by A Certain Ratio – and a mad mix of styles that's immediately compelling! The group are a key link here in so many traditions – British punk, 70s funk, dub, and late prog – all coming together under the godlike production talents of Martin Hannett to make the album one of the gleaming jewels in the crown of the young Factory Records label. There's never been a record of such scattered, skittish darkness – and even though short songs like "The Fox", "Forced Laugh", "Felch", "My Spirit", and "Loss" are arresting, the whole thing's magnificently capped off by the extended percussion jam "Winter Hill" – a tune that sounds like a batucada group trying to drum their way across a post-apocalyptic landscape! The pair are still working with Quincy Jones at this point, and the record's filled with lots of tight jazzy grooves that certainly show Quincy's touch – and which set the record apart from a number of similar mainstream funk records flooding the market at the time. The standout cut on the album is their great reading of "Strawberry Letter 23" – originally done by Shuggie Otis in a stoner version, but nicely stripped down here by the Bros, and given a very nice pop psychedelic soul twist! The sound here is a wonderful blend of psyche influences and sunnier pop elements – swirled up with a bit of strings, styled in the same catchy territory as The Strawberry Alarm Clock or some of the other groovy groups on Uni. Vocals are lightly playful, often with a sing-song quality, but with occasional rougher edges – almost like Lovin Spoonful – and titles include the hit "Green Tambourine", plus "Shoeshine Boy", "Rice Is Nice", "Fifty Year Void", "Through With You", "Blueberry Blue", and "The Shoemaker Of Leatherwear Square". Tappan Zee/Columbia, 1980. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $9.99
Sweet later work from guitarist Wilbert Longmire – a warm mixture of soul and funky jazz – and easily one of the better records to come from the Tappan Zee label at the time! Production is by Bob James and Jay Chattaway – with an R&B-inflected vibe that's a bit like some of the best late 70s work on Kudo or CTI. Longmire's still got that wonderfully chromatic style on guitar – which works well in this setting – and even though he sings a bit on the record, it's the instrumentals that keep us listening. Titles include "Take Your Time", "Music Speaks Louder Than Words", "Strawberry Sunset", "Hawkeye", and "But I Love You". LP, Vinyl record album

They definitely got the title right on this one – as the set's a solid batch of soulful instrumentals all the way through – one of our favorites from the great Willie Mitchell! Willie's got a lot more bite here than on some of his famous warmer productions in the 70s – a gritty Memphis soul instrumental style that's pretty close to the best of its kind over at Stax Records – complete with tight, punchy drums on the bottom – and a sweet mix of organ, tenor, guitar, and trumpet in the lead! Nothing's ever too forced, and there's a groove that's laidback, but right on the money – on titles that include "San Ho Zay", "Monkey Jump", "Strawberry Solo", "Hideaway", "Up Hard", "The Horse", and "Grazing In The Grass". Shuggie OtisInspiration Information ... CD
Epic/Luaka Bop, 1974. Used ... $5.99
An insanely wonderful album! Shuggie Otis is the son of Johnny Otis – the LA R&B maestro who was moving heavily into funk at the end of the 60s – and he has this tripped out, super-dope guitar style that he played to strong effect on Johnny's albums of the late 60s and early 70s, and on his first two solo albums, which were kind of bluesy in tone. For this album, though, he shocked the world by moving into a stripped-down mode that pairs his guitar with spare drum machine rhythms, flanged-out deeply soulful vocals, and one of the most laidback conceptions of funk you'll ever hear. The album's a landmark – one of those gems that's unlike anything else you can think of, but which will redefine your concept of what you want in a record for years to come. Every track's a winner – and the whole thing's a perfectly unified batch of tunes that includes instant classics like "Inspiration Information", "Island Letter", "Aht Uh Mi Hed", "XL 30", and "Rainy Day". Plus, this reissue features 4 tracks from Shuggie's Freedom Flight LP – including his original version of "Strawberry Letter 23", and "Sweet Thang", "Freedom Flight", and "Ice Cold Daydream". CD

Plastic PennyTwo Sides Of A Penny ... LP
Page One, 1968. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A great little record from a British group who grew out of a single studio pop hit – then quickly emerged as something else entirely! Singer Brian Keith recorded the leadoff hit as a single, without the band – but man, once a group was put together, things really got interesting – as Keith's compelling, soulful vocals get sublime support from the organ of Paul Raymond, guitar of Mike Graham, bass of Tony Murray, and drums of a young Nigel Olsson – who'd later go on to great fame in the 70s! The territory has echoes of the soul and blues of the mod years – but the complexity of the organ lines, and some of the rhythms, make for a more baroque sound – maybe like Procol Harum at times, but with its very own vibe. Olsson and Raymond also sing a bit – and titles include "Everything I Am", "Genevieve", "Wake Me Up", "Mrs Grundy", "Take Me Back", "I Want You", "So Much Older Now", "No Pleasure Without Pain My Love", and a version of "Strawberry Fields Forever". VariousBig Gold Dreams – A Story Of Scottish Independent Music 1977 to 1989 (5CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 5CD ... $39.99
The northern side of the UK scene finally gets its due – all with a sound that's a lot more exciting than the spare landscape pictured on the cover! The work is all from Scotland, and it's hardly the music of kilts and bagpipes – because nearly all these tracks had a huge influence on the British music scene down south – the kind of tracks that won over listeners on the John Peel Show, got rave reviews in NME and Melody Maker, and forever helped change the style at just about every step of the way from the punk years onwards! The package is a huge treasure trove of great sounds – as musically fantastic as it is a geographical marker – and honestly, we had no idea that so many of these artists were Scottish – as we usually just think of a few key 80s groups when we try to picture that scene. Instead, the book-like package has plenty of knowledge, notes, and pictures to offer – in support of 115 tracks by artists who run the gamut from early punk, through post-punk, power pop, nouveau psych, C86 charmers, Creation Records fuzz, and some of the new grooves that exploded at the end of the 80s. Includes work by The Zips, Skids, Subs, PVC, Rezillos, Jesus & Mary Chain, Del Amitri, Primal Scream, Meat Whiplash, Blood Uncles, Pastels, Altered Images, Prats, Josef K, Cocteau Twins, The Orchids, Vaselines, Shamen, Mackenzies, Baby Lemonade, Bachelor Pad, Dog Faced Hermans, Cindytalk, Strawberry Switchblade, Aztec Camera, Biff Bang Pow, Boots For Dancing, Fire Engines, Thomas Leer, The Associates, Scars, TV 21, Ales Fergusson, Jasmine Minks, and lots lots more! Weird and wild sounds from this early 80s French group – a set of tracks that supposedly each represents a different hallucination by a 6 year old girl! Given the sound of some of these cuts, we'd be more than inclined to agree with that claim – as most of the music is pretty darn trippy, often instrumental, and served up in a blend of heavy keyboards and spacey guitars – produced with a finish that's more mid 70s Germany than the early 80s recording date of the album – more proggish than post-punk, if you know what we mean!
