A lost gospel treasure from this obscure Mississippi group – cut in the mid 70s, but with a stripped-down sound that's completely timeless overall! The Staples Jr Singers certainly have picked up some of the more righteous currents of mainstream soul and funk at the time – echoed both in their tremendous phrasing on the lyrics, and on some of the album's used of raw guitar licks next to their words – but the stripped-down vibe gives the record a feel that's almost more 60s deep soul overall – as befits their southern roots, and the album's issue on a small indie label! There's also maybe a bit less "church" on the record than the usual gospel outing of the time – more overall messages about love, unity, and feeling – which also gives the whole thing a very transcendent quality. Darn nice work from The Staple Singers – a record that seems to take the leaner, meaner sound learned by the group during their soundtrack years, and turn it back towards the fuller, more righteous sound of the Stax years! The album was recorded at Muscle Shoals, with very solid production and instrumentation throughout – a top-shelf effort that shows that even at this later date, a group like The Staples can still get some good sounds out of the studio. A few tracks are a bit mis-stepped, especially when Mavis steps out a bit too strongly in the lead – but overall, there's plenty of nice surprises on the record – and tracks include "Chica Boom", "Don't Burn Me", "Handwriting On The Wall", "Mystery Train", "I Want You To Dance", "Love Being Your Fool", "Showdown", "Unlock Your Mind", and "Leave It All Up To Love". A record that begins with a question, and follows through with a sublime mix of social politics and spiritual energy! Pops Staples asserts himself a bit more than before with his songwriting here – including the title classic "Why (Am I Treated So Bad)", which went onto become one of THE anthems of the Civil Rights era! That energy follows in more original songs by Pops, and in his great reworkings of older traditional numbers – on a set that also has the group working with producer Billy Sherrill, who seems to give them even more power than before, but without commercializing their music at all. A rootsy exploration of themes from the Civil Rights movement by Mavis Staples – getting the Anti treatment here with some real back-to-basics production from Ry Cooder! The sound is possibly even more down home than any of Mavis solo work from years back – certainly more so than her classy 70s soundtrack efforts, and even her earliest work for Stax – almost in an imagined place that jumps backwards to the sound of the earliest Staple Singers albums on Vee Jay, then brings in a bit of Cooder-esque soul to fill things up. Backing vocals on some tracks are by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and by a trio of backing singers on others – and titles include "Down In Mississippi", "Eyes On The Prize", "99 & 1/2", "This Little Light Of Mine", "On My Way", "I'll Be Rested", and "My Own Eyes". A soundtrack put together by Al Kooper for this unusual late 60s film about a white landlord in a neighborhood of color – one that has all the tense-but-funky moments you might expect! Al's music is in the lead, but apart from his vocals, what we really dig are the instrumental tunes – played by Al and The Landlords – a group that includes Eric Gale, Chuck Rainey, Joe Farrell, and Frank Owens. These tracks are short and funky – and include the titles "The Landlord", "Walter G's Boogaloo", and "Soul Hoedown", all nice funky numbers. Lorraine Ellison sings "Doin Me Dirty" and the famously sampled "Let Me Love You", and The Staples end out the record with "God Bless The Children". LP, Vinyl record album

A righteous early classic from The Staple Singers – a record that rings out with a spiritual note in the title, but one that also covers a whole host of social issues with its power too! The music has that sublime blend that the group perfected right from the start – almost a secret inclusion of a larger social agenda, presented amidst gospel tunes re-arranged by Pops Staples – plus a few of his own great tracks too. A great look at the huge influence on 60s soul from Burt Bacharach – a rich legacy that goes way beyond the big hits from Dionne Warwick, to include a wealth of work from artists you might not expect! Back in the early days, Burt was the tall white guy running around the Brill Building – where he made key connections to a range of different artists, and was able to already hit the ground running – with a huge legacy that would go onto inform soul singers for years to come! In fact, we'd almost say that Bacharach's music sounds even better in the hands of these singers than in more mainstream pop artists – and although a few of these cuts are well-known hits, you'll find plenty more great ones here to discover. Maybe the coolest record ever put out by the Luaka Bop label – and that's really saying a lot, given all the amazing albums they've given us over the years! The set's a perfect musical tonic for the times – a set of underground singles from the 70s, most of which fall in a space between the secular and spiritual – message-oriented, but not entirely from the scriptures – with a humanist message of positivity that's completely timeless – as powerful now as it was when these gems were recorded! The source of most of these records is from a gospel perspective, but they work a lot more in the territory of righteous 70s soul – making the same sort of shift that The Staple Singers or Voices Of East Harlem did on a better-known scale. One of the greatest female soul records ever to come from Chicago – a killer set of work from the legendary Ruby Andrews! Ruby's a hell of a talent that should have been huge at a national level – possessed with a deep soul style that matched the best from Betty Lavette or Mavis Staples, but often set up in more sophisticated arrangements too – in a mode that worked perfectly in a "double-edged sword" model that was often employed by other Chicago singers, like Barbara Acklin or Patty Drew. The album was issued as a follow-up to Ruby's massive cut "Casanova", which is a perfect example of this style – with Ruby's raw vocals over the top, some loping string arrangements underneath, and the whole thing working perfectly together in an amazing blend of styles! A triumphant return for The Gorillaz – as improbably (impossibly!?) brilliant as ever! Much like the real life post-millennium culture we all inhabit, The Gorillaz exist in a world both virtual and physical – with artist and conceptualist Jamie Hewlett, singer/guiding force Damon Albarn, producer Twilite Tone and others providing a mood and aesthetic framework for an amazing roster of guest singers, rhymers and musicians on this one, who all really contribute a lot – especially to the lyricism and writing. Given the stylistically sprawling guests – both prominently billed and even more further behind the scenes – it's really impressive how well it holds together so cohesively from beginning-to-end.
