ShaggsPhilosophy Of The World ... LP
Third World, 1969. Near Mint- ... $59.99
The weird, raw and legendary debut of teen trio The Shaggs – recorded in a single day and issued by the Third World label back in the day, before slowly building a devoted cult following over the years! The Shaggs story of a young girl group and their dad manager dreaming big and hoping for stardom, but the stunningly primitive sound actually makes the patron saints of outsider art rock and indie rock to come – it's messy and amazing to this day! Odd and hypnotic, it's an outsider classic unlike any other. Includes "Philosophy Of The World", "That Little Sports Car", "Who Are Parents", "My Pal Foot Foot", "My Companion", "I'm So Happy When You're Near", "Things I I Wonder", "It's Halloween", "Why Do I Feel?", "What Should I Do", "My Companion", "Sweet Thing", "We Have A Savoir" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 80s yellow label Red Rooster/Rounder pressing. Cover has some edge wear, light aging, and a tiny mark and some remnants from price sticker removal.)

✨✧ Richard DavisPhilosophy Of The Spiritual ... LP
Cobblestone, Early 70s. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Possibly the best of the rare few albums that Richard Davis cut as a leader during the 70s, and a very soulful batch of tracks that has Davis on lead bass, with additional backing by Bill Lee, and a group that includes Chick Corea, Sam Brown, and Frankie Dunlop. The overall sound is nice and warm, with a good mellow groove, over near the left end of the soul jazz spectrum. Titles include "Juan Valdez", "Baby Sweets", "The Rabbi", and "Oh My God". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original Cobblestone pressing. Cover has a cutout hole with a sticker remnant, but is nice overall.)

✨✧ Mario Pavone Dialect TrioPhilosophy ... CD
Clean Feed (Portugal), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Pianist Mario Pavone always has a nicely cascading sensibility in his music – and that seems to be the case here more than ever, in a trio that moves along nicely with bass from Matt Mitchell and drums from the wonderful Tyshawn Sorey! The group has a sense of energy that leaps and lopes along – gently galloping at most moments, with these cascades of sounds, tones, and colors from Pavone's strong hands on the piano – almost building in intensity more and more as the album moves on! Titles include "Iskmix", "Noka", "Circles", "Philosophy", and "The Beginning". CD

✨✧ Johnnie TaylorJohnnie Taylor Philosophy Continues ... CD
Stax, 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
Funky soul from Johnnie Taylor – a set that mixes tight core grooving with some larger arrangements from Bert Keyes and Rudy Robinson – a perfect blend that shows why Taylor easily stood out from some of his bluesy contemporaries! It's clear that Johnnie's just the right guy to handle a setting this hip – and since he's got Marvell Thomas on keyboards, Steve Cropper on guitar, Donald Duck Dunn on bass, and Al Jackson on drums, there's more than enough kick at the bottom to keep things grooving. Titles include the great originals "I Had A Fight With Love", and "Separation Line" – plus hip takes on "Testify", "It's Your Thing", "Games People Play", and "Love Is A Hurtin Thing". CD

Philip GlassSatyagraha (3LP Box Set) ... LP
Columbia, 1985. Near Mint- 3LP Box Set ... $33.99 39.99
Amazing work from Philip Glass – his second great opera, and a long-overdue follow-up to Einstein On The Beach – a set of music that's every bit as great as that groundbreaking work, but maybe even with stronger, fuller execution overall! The piece looks at the early political years of Gandhi – the title is a term coined by him, as a reference to his philosophy of truth and love – with words by Constance DeJohng, and these amazing minimalist orchestrations by Glass – filled with the kind of long-spun lines you'd find in his instrumental work, but somehow made even more amazing with the presence of lyrics! Douglas Perry handles the role of Gandhi – and the performance is by the New York City Opera Orchestra and Chorus, directed by Christopher Keene. LP, Vinyl record album
(Dutch pressing. Includes the booklet, lined inner sleeves, and Masterworks catalog. Box has a cutout hole, in great shape otherwise.)

✨✧ Stanley TurrentineCherry (80s pressing) ... LP
CTI, 1972. Very Good+ ... $14.99
One of the best CTI albums from the early 70s – and one of Stanley Turrentine's funkiest records as well! The album's got a sharper edge than most other Turrentine albums of the time – a quality that goes beyond Stan's already soulful approach to the tenor, and which brings in some tight changes and more pronounced rhythms that really give the best cuts a great groove! The group's a sextet – with Bob James on electric piano, Milt Jackson on vibes, Cornell Dupree on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, and Billy Cobham on drums – and titles include a monster version of Weldon Irvine's "Sister Sanctified" – a great funk tune that's probably best known as the sample for "My Philosophy" by BDP! Other tracks include "Speedball", "Cherry", and "The Revs". LP, Vinyl record album
(Vinyl plays with a short click on the first track. Cover has light wear, mild corner bend.)

VariousKlinkhamer Records Vol 2 ... LP
BBE (UK), 1970s/2024. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $31.99 39.99
Jazzy goodness galore – a set of really well-chosen tracks that we're not sure we've ever seen reissued before – mostly from obscure sources that might well have remained underdiscovered otherwise! Jazz is at the key, but there's also some soulful vocal moments too – and most tracks are long, and have a vibe that's a nice change from funky jazz or spiritual modes – even though there's still plenty of soulful energy throughout the set! Instrumentation is both electric and acoustic, and styles change up nicely – in ways that make each new track a great discovery, even if you've got ears that are well-trained on years of record digging. Titles include "On Dit" by Sara Alexander, "On A Winder's Day" by Afrodisax, "For You" by Dave Plaehn, "Pre-Stretch Warm Up" by Rick Panzer, "Du Ar Frisk" by Roger Ekman, "Philosophy" by Anne Marie Giortz, "Sengakuji" by Urban Hansson, and "Alcohol" by Rene Van Helsdingen. ✨✧ CA QuintetTrip Thru Hell (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Sundazed, 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Take a trip through hell with the CA Quintet – an obscure late 60s combo from the Twin Cities – and one who've got more than enough psychedelic power to live up to the Cali promise of their name! The album's got a pretty amazing cover – nude models dancing in a satanic landscape – and the sounds within are even more incredible – way more eerie and offbeat than other records of this nature, with a true undercurrent of evil that really comes through in both the darkness of the instrumentation, and the creepy way the vocals are put across. Titles include "Trip Thru Hell" – in two parts – plus "Sleepy Hollow Lane", "Smooth As Silk", "Cold Spider", and "Colorado Mourning". CD features lots of bonus tracks – including "Fortune Teller's Lie", "Bury Me In A Marijuana Field", "I Want You To Love Me Girl", "Bring All Your Love", "Dr Of Philosophy", and "Ain't No Doubt About It". ✨✧ King PleasureKing Pleasure (aka Golden Days) ... LP
Everest, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful beautiful record, and still one of the greatest jazz vocal albums ever made. The great King Pleasure sings in a raspy vocalese style similar to Jon Hendricks or Eddie Jefferson, but with a sense of warmth and delivery that the two of them never seem to reach. The set list here features a stellar batch of tracks with lyrics by Pleasure, including "The New Symphony Sid", "No, Not Much", "Parker's Mood", and "Golden Days". There's some great accompaniment by LA hard bop players like Teddy Edwards, Gerald Wiggins, and Harold Land, and the whole set sparkles with imagination and warmth. Plus, the liner notes include a cool set of notes about Pleasure's crazy philosophy called Planetism. Wild stuff! LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 70s issue. Cover has light wear, a smudge from sticker removal, and some minor blemishes in back.)

✨✧ Rahsaan Roland Kirk & The Vibration SocietyRahsaan Rahsaan ... LP
Atlantic, 1970. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the hippest albums that Rahsaan Roland Kirk ever recorded – a perfect realization of his "black classical music" ethos, and a pan-generational jazz album that's all held together by one unique musical vision! Side one features the extended suite "The Seeker", which mixes together bop, avant garde, and New Orleans styles – and side two features more of the same in an extended medley of tracks, plus the titles "Baby Let Me Shake Your Tree" and "Sweet Fire". The album's got a few cool passages that feature recitations by Rahsaan – stating his musical philosophy, and tracing the development of the styles of work – and other players include Leroy Jenkins on violin, Dick Griffin on trombone, Ron Burton on piano, and Sonelius Smith on celeste! LP, Vinyl record album
(Red and greel label Broadway pressing – a nice copy!)

✨✧ Boogie Down ProductionsBy All Means Necessary ... LP
Jive, 1988. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Seminal late 80s righteous hip hop from KRS and Boogie Down Productions! By All Means Necessary shows remarkable change in lyrical style from Criminal Minded, delivering a eavy dose of knowledge at a time when so much hip hop was all about rocking the party. KRS's lyrics here mark a serious turn for political hip hop, and it sets a new standard production-wise, as well. Greatness! Includes "My Philosophy", "Ya Slippin'", "Jimmy", "Illegal Business", "Stop The Violence", "Nervous", "I'm Still #1", "Part Time Suckers", "T'Cha - T'Cha" and 'Necessary". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Pat MartinoBaiyina – The Clear Evidence (orange vinyl pressing) ... LP
Prestige/Real Gone, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A key moment in the flowering of guitarist Pat Martino – a set that has him really moving away from his soul jazz roots, into a deeper exploration of freer ideas in jazz – touched with a bit of Eastern philosophy! The tracks on the set are all quite long – played by a group that augments Martino with second guitarist Bobby Rose, plus flute and alto from Gregory Herbert, bass from Richard Davis, drums from Charlie Persib, and added tabla and tamboura that really help push the "Eastern" agenda of the set! Martino's solos are still picked out in a clear, clean style – but his phrasing is even more chromatic, and done with a searching quality that befits the album's inspiration from the Koran! Titles include "Distant Land", "Baiyina", and "Where Love's A Grown Up God". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Monday MichiruAlternate Routes ... CD
Artist Share, 2008. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Great remixes from Monday Michiru's Routes album – and a set that really continues her strong tradition of collaboration with some of the hippest talents of the underground! As with some of our favorite Michiru remixes from years back, the tracks here are more re-imaginations or re-recordings of her music than anything else – hardly just new beats or keyboards added into the mix, and often versions that have the tunes taken in rich new directions – always with the soulful, positive energy we love in Monday's originals. Collaborators include Part Time Heroes, Jephte Guillame, and Carlos Mena – and titles include "The Right Time (Yellowtail rmx)", "Hung Up (PTH sprung up mix)", "You Don't Know (feat Part Time Heroes)", "Philosophy Road (PTH hideout mix)", "The Right Time (Jephte's tet kale mix)", and "Don't (Casamena backyard mix)". Released after Minnie's untimely death – and way more than just a greatest hits compilation! Apart from the expected great hits and songs – like "Here We Go", "Inside My Love", "Memory Lane", "Lovin' You", and "Adventures In Paradise" – the album also features live versions of "Young Willing & Able", "Can You Feel What I'm Saying", and "Lover & Friend", which are great to hear, especially because they show Minnie to be equally strong in a live setting as she was in the studio. Plus, the record also has 2 "Moments With Minnie", which feature Minnie at the piano, delivering some patter and philosophy. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Paul YoungquistPure Solar World – Sun Ra & The Birth Of Afrofuturism ... Book
University Of Texas Press, 2016/2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great book that looks not just at the music of Sun Ra, but also the theory behind it – the special take on reality, and interstellar philosophy that made Ra as important a thinker as he was a musician! The music is approached from a theoretical framework that's extremely illuminating – especially if you only know some of the Arkestra records at face value, and not in the larger context of Sun Ra's ideas – and the author includes plenty of history to illuminate the ideas, but in ways that are nicely different than some of the previous books on the subject. The whole thing is a really great look at the transformative power of the music of Ra – that quality that's always made him far more than just another avant jazz musician, and instead a figure of inspiration and social change to decades of listeners who have followed his sound. Very well researched, with copious notes. Paperback, 372 pages. Book
