Solomon BurkeBack To My Roots (180 gram pressing) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Chess/Anagram, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
A really great record from Solomon Burke – and one that's quite different than his early work on Atlantic Records! Solomon's not going for his roots, and instead works with help from Sylvia Robinson and the team over at All-Platinum Records – to get kind of a pre-Sugarhill dose of mellow soul and New Jersey hipness that really sets this one apart! Unlike so many other 70s acts, Solomon never made the trip to Philly to record during the decade – but this album is maybe the closest we'll get – with that slightly rawer edge that always made the New Jersey records so great! Case in point is a tasty track by Ray and Goodman of the Moments, called "Over and Over", which is a wonderful mellow modern soul track – very different than anything Solomon ever recorded – heard here alongside other cuts that include "Life Has Its Ups & Downs", "Everybody's Got To Cry Sometime", "I'm Going Back To My Roots", "Burning For Your Love", "Night and Day", "Precious Flower", and "I'll Never Stop Loving You". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited pressing – first time reissue – on 180 gram vinyl!)

Solomon BurkeI Have A Dream ... LP
ABC, 1974. Very Good+ ... $13.99
Surprisingly nice work! Like the rest of Solomon's post-Atlantic LPs, this one has a sound that's different than his classic work, but which also exposes a whole new side of his talent, and range of vocals that didn't always show up for Atlantic. Solomon arranged and produced here, and the sound is mellow and a bit modern, but still with excellent southern soul touches. Most of the tracks are new, and are dedications to Martin Luther King Jr., who was the inspiration for the album. The stuff's a lot more political than most of Solomon's work, as you might guess by titles like "I Have A Dream", "Now Is The Time", "Social Change", and "Mountain Top". LP, Vinyl record album

Solomon BurkeKing Of Rock N Soul – The Atlantic Recordings 1962 to 1968 (3CD set) ... CD
Atlantic/Soulmusic.com (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
Essential work from the legendary Solomon Burke – one of the greatest singers to record for Atlantic Records during the 60s – and an artist we'd put right up there next to Aretha Franklin or Otis Redding! Like both of those giants, Solomon has a style that's completely his own – almost a blueprint for deep soul, southern soul, and 60s soul all together at once – never captured as well or as perfectly as during the mid 60s years he recorded for Atlantic! There's nobody like Solomon Burke during these Atlantic years – a hard-edged singer who was virtually inventing deep soul at the time – taking currents from earlier R&B years, and folding them with a brash, bold energy that was completely heartfelt – and which drew on the same sort of styles that southern soul singers would make their own a few years later – as you'll see by the dates here, Burke predates work by Otis Redding, Percy Sledge, and Wilson Pickett. The package features 3CDS, and a massive 79 tracks in all – the biggest collection of Burke's work for Atlantic that we've ever seen – with tracks that include "I'm Hanging Up My Heart For You", "Baby", "Gotta Travel On", "Peepin", "Yes I Do", "The Price", "You're Good For Me", "Beautiful Brown Eyes", "When She Touches Me", "Keep Lookin", "Woman How Do You Make Me Love You Like I Do", "Presents For Christmas", "What'd I Say", "Get Out Of My Life Woman", "This Little Ring", "It's All Right", "How Many Times", "Cry To Me", "Hard Ain't It Hard", "Mountain Of Pride", "I Feel A Sin Coming On", and lots lots more! A fantastic set – all 6 of Solomon's albums for Atlantic, plus non-LP cuts recorded for the label. CD

✨✧ Solomon BurkeMusic To Make Love By (80s pressing) ... LP
Chess, 1975. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
An incredible record – a real standout in Solomon Burke's career! This set features him working with arrangements that are smooth, mellow, and sexy – very much in the Barry White and Isaac Hayes mode, a style that's a perfect fit for Solomon's voice, which was warm and deep back when White and Hayes were just kids! Gene Page did some of the arrangements with Solomon, and the record's a wonderfully unified session with a mellow 70s soul feel that's just great. Titles include "Everlasting Love", "Music To Make Love By", "Midnight & You", "You & Your Baby Blues", and "Let Me Wrap My Arms Around You". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Solomon BurkeIf You Need Me (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Atlantic/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1963. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Seminal sounds from Solomon Burke – and a record that already has the young singer hitting the full heights of his greatness! There's a vibe here that's unlike anything else – even any of Burke's heavy-hitting contemporaries on Atlantic Records – and the album's key proof that Solomon's easily one of the greatest soul singers who ever lived! His vocals have roots that go very deep, but the strength of his vocals also help bring a new focus to 60s soul as well – a raw power that so many others would try to emulate, yet maybe never hit as well as Burke. A number of cuts here are great originals penned by Solomon, and every number's a gem – with titles that include "Stupidity", "Words", "If You Need Me", "Home In Your Heart", "Tonight My Heart She Is Crying", "I Really Don't Want To Know", and "Send Me Some Loving". ✨✧ Solomon BurkeHomeland ... CD
Bizarre, 1991. Used ... Out Of Stock
A near-lost comeback effort from Solomon Burke – recorded at the start of the 90s for the mostly-rock Bizarre label, but a surprisingly well-done set overall! The mode here is often in that southern soul revival style used by Malaco heavily in the 80s and 90s – an approach that sounded a bit unusual for Solomon at the time, but which has a nicely aged appeal here. Instrumentation is sometimes modern – at least for the time – but given that Burke was hardly recording secular soul albums in the 80s, the record's kind of like the one he never got to make from that decade, with instrumentation that's sometimes a bit electric, but vocals that haven't faltered a bit! Titles include "Baby Please Don't Cry", "Try A Little Tenderness", "Make It Up To You", "Stayin Away", "Home Land", "I'll Be There", and "Love Ain't No Easy Place To Be". CD

Millie JacksonLoving Arms – The Soul Country Collection ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Classic country soul from Millie Jackson – plus a brand new song as well – all served up in a set that shows yet another side of this legendary singer! Millie's known both for her weepy sad songs of the early years, and her bitchy blues of later ones – but during the 70s, she also cut a fair bit of country-tinged tunes as well – done in a similar space as other southern soul singers like Joe Tex, Solomon Burke, or Joe Simon! The styles vary nicely, though – not just the straight blend of country roots and soulful inflections you'd hear in the 60s – as some of the tracks are from later years, and bring in some modern soul to the mix – nicely expanding the sound. A few titles are duets with Isaac Hayes – and titles include "Angel In Your Arms", "Rose Colored Glasses", "Sweet Music Man", "Cheatin Is", "You Needed Me", "Pick Me Up On Your Way Down", and "Standing In Your Line" – plus the brand new track "Black Bitch Crazy". Fantastic work from Tamiko Jones – one of the more enigmatic soul singers of her generation! Tamiko could always handle a number of styles – and on this set, she moves between jazz and deep soul, working through a set of tracks that were recorded at either Sam Phillips in Memphis, or Rudy Van Gelder's famous jazz studio in New Jersey. Arrangements are by Teacho Wiltshire, Horace Ott, and Artie Butler – and Solomon Burke makes a guest appearance on the track "Try It Baby". Other tunes include "Where Are They Now?", "Black Is Black", "Ya Ya", "Suddenly", "This Time Tomorrow", and "Please Return Your Love To Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Soul ClanSoul Meeting/That's How It Feels ... 7-inch
Atlantic, Late 60s. Very Good- ... $4.99
Incredibly memorable stuff – and one of the greatest moments in Atlantic soul history! The Soul Clan is an assemblage of Atlantic's biggest male singers at the time – Joe Tex, Ben E King, Don Covay, Arthur Conley, and Solomon Burke – and the team trade lines back and forth in this perhaps first-ever "supergroup" recording! "Soul Meeting" is a party cut, with all the singers talking about how they have to go somewhere and break up their meeting. "That's How It Feels" is a mellower tune, sung together as a harmony track – with the voices coming together on the chorus passages, and breaking out beautifully on the other parts. Great stuff – and even though Atlantic did release a Soul Clan LP, these were the only 2 original cuts on the record! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Jackie WilsonBaby Workout (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Brunswick/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1963. New Copy ... $13.99
A hard soul groove from the great Jackie Wilson – and a record that really has the singer coming into his own! The music is tight, upbeat, and mighty rocking right from the start – and Wilson takes off with these tremendous vocals that are undeniably some of the greatest in early soul music – very much on a par with the best from Clyde McPhatter or Solomon Burke! And unlike some of Wilson's other albums of the time, there's almost no pop or ballad material at all – just great groovers like "Baby Workout", "You Only Live Once", "Cute Little Girls", "Shake! Shake! Shake!", "Love Train", "Say You Will", and "The Kickapoo". CD features 8 bonus tracks too – including "The New Breed", "Haunted House", "Call Her Up", "I'm Travelin On", "I'm Going Crazy", "Baby Get It", and "He's A Fool". CD

VariousBert Berns Story Vol 2 – Mr Success 1964 to 1967 ... CD
Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Key years in the Bert Berns story – that magical mid 60s period when Berns was coming up with some killer soul sides, and a few famous rockers too! The sound here is tremendous – kind of a "wall of sound" to New York soul – that marvelous style that's also known as uptown soul, for its careful production and sense of class. Some of the most important Berns moments are collected here, alongside lesser-known gems that really round out the sound – including 8 tracks appearing on CD for the first time, which should be plenty to peak the interest of any 60s soul collectors (as if the great Ace notes and package weren't enough!) Production is wonderful throughout, and the set list features some killer Atlantic/Atco singles – plus other gems from smaller indies of the period – cuts that include "Mojo Mama" by Don Varner, "No One Could Ever Love You" by Freddie Scott, "Show Me Your Monkey" by Kenny Hamber, "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love" by Solomon Burke, "It Was Easier To Hurt Her" by Garnett Mimms, "I Went Out With My Baby Tonight" by Moses K & The Prophets, "Run Mascara" by The Exciters, "Cry No More" by Ben E King, "Mr Success" by Bobby Harris, "Gone Gone" by Roy C, "Better Not Believe Him" by Barbara Lewis, "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison, "I Got To Go Back" by Otis Redding, "If I Would Marry You" by Tammy Montgomery, and "Come On Girl" by The Knight Brothers. A treasure trove of wonderful tunes – all written by the legendary southern soul team of Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham!
