✨✧ Peggy LeeSea Shells (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Decca/Victor (Japan), 1955. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of the strangest albums ever released by Peggy Lee! The record is a perfect showcase for her haunting voice, and has her singing some extremely spare tracks, with minimal arrangements behind her, and a dark brooding quality throughout. The record has somber washes of harp and harpsichord, which really give a strange quality to the record – and almost make it feel like an early session by Nico. We'd never guessed that Peggy could sound so dark – and the tracks are a very odd mix of material with folksy touches. Titles include "A Brown Bird Singing", "Sea Fever", "Nine Thorny Thickets", "Of Such Is The Kingdom Of God", and "Chinese Love Poems". Very strange – and very beautiful! CD

Don CherryHear & Now ... LP
Atlantic/Real Gone, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 31.99 On March 3, 2023
Important 70s work from Don Cherry – one of the first albums to bring his overseas experiments to a larger US audience! The set builds nicely off of styles that Don forged earlier in France and Scandinavia – a freer style of music than his work with Ornette Coleman, and a richly organic groove that builds up strongly from the bottom, often with elements of world music settled in alongside the jazz – but there's also some funkier moments here too, a bit like the Brown Rice album, but looser overall! The groups on most numbers are relatively large and spiritual – almost like Alice Coltrane at times, but a bit more electric and funky at others – and players include Collin Walcott on sitar, Michael Brecker on saxes, Cliff Carter on keyboards, Lenny White and Tony Williams on drums, Lois Colin on harp, and Raphael Cruz on percussion. Cherry himself plays conch shells, bells, and flute in addition to his usual trumpet – and he even sings a bit on a few numbers, in a soulful, scatting sort of groove. Narada Michael Walden produced, and the whole set's got a very righteous feel – with tracks that include "Universal Mother", "Buddah's Blues", "Eagle Eye", "Mahakali", "Karmapa Chenno", "Surrender Rose", and "Journey Of Milarepa". Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1989. New Copy ... $16.99
Later live work from Dizzy Gillespie – working in London here with a very hip ensemble! We're not entirely sure of the date, but given the skinny ties on a few of the players, we're guessing it's from that 80s stretch when Dizzy was still going strong – working in a great mix of Latin and bop modes that's always kept fresh through his creative energies! Slide Hampton's on trombone – and also wrote most of the arrangements – and other players include Arturo Sandoval on trumpet, Paquito D'Rivera on reeds, James Moody on sax and flute, Airto on percussion, and Danilo Perez on vocals – and Flora Purim also joins the group on vocals for a few numbers. ✨✧ Vijay IyerMutations ... CD
ECM (Germany), 2014. Used ... $9.99
Vijay Iyer on ECM – a great new setting for one of the most-discussed pianists in recent years – and a chance for him to offer up some even more creative sides of his talents! The record still features Vijay playing piano with some of those blocky tones and rhythmic pulses that we love from his other trio and solo recordings – but the album also features him on electronics, and working with a string quartet on one number too – all in ways that are looser and more abstract than some of his better-known records, and creates a bridge between his jazz work and some of the new music modes of ECM. Titles include "Vuln Part 2", "Spellbound & Sacrosanct Cowrie Shells & The Shimmering Sea", "Mutations I to X", and "When We're Gone". CD

Carlos NinoExtra Presence ... LP
International Anthem, 2022. New Copy 2LP ... $27.99 29.99
The music of Carlos Nino has just gotten more and more spiritual as the years go on – and that's really saying a lot, given how spiritual he was right at the start! But with recent records, Nino has transformed from a jazz-inspired musician to maybe more of a sonic astronaut – able to take organic moments of expression and weave them into a rich tapestry of tone, color, and life – almost as if he's reworking the plane of existence, and trying to find the door to greater enlightenment in the process! That approach definitely comes through here, as Nino opens up in the company of contributors who include Jamael Dean on piano and keyboards, Devin Daniels on alto, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on strings, Jesse Peterson on guitar, Sam Gendel on alto, and Jamire Wiliams on drums – as well all players whose work appears in different ways on a variety of tracks – all helmed by the sonic exploration of Carlos, with a bit of help from veteran travelers Iasos and Laraaji. Titles include "Explorations 7", "Actually", "For The Shapalaceer", "Luis' Special Shells", "Jamirelandflight", "Waterwavesarrival", "In The Moment", "Youwillgetthroughthis I Promise", "Dreamsishappening", and "Recurrent Reiki Dreams". ✨✧ Steve TurreDelicious & Delightful ... CD
High Note, 2010. Used ... $7.99
Steve Turre's one of those players we always look out – especially as a leader, because albums like this are always some of our favorites! And although years back, we might have thought of Turre as a player with a gimmick, we've really come to appreciate his subtle sense of soul – and the increasing sense of spiritualism in his music over the years! This album's a great indication of that quality – as tenorist Billy Harper figures strongly in the sound of the record – working in a group that features Turre on trombone and shells, Larry Willis on piano, Corcoran Holt on bass, Dion Parson on drums, and Pedro Martinez on percussion. Russell Malone plays guitar on two tracks – and the tunes have a nicely building nature – stepping out with rich colors that are augmented nicely by Harper – in a set of almost all original material. Titles include "Light Within", "Duke Rays", "Speak To Me Of Love Speak To Me Of Truth", "Dance Of The Gazelles", "Delicious & Delightful", and "Sunala Nobala". CD

Outta Sight (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
Stirring sounds from the start of the 60s – all pulled from that magical moment when soul was first coming into place – brought together out of different strands of grooves that were rumbling around in the 50s! The set mixes R&B, vocal group, and even a bit of pop – but all with a sound that's plenty soulful throughout – and really uncovers some lesser-known gems in the process! These Outta Sight collections are always great for Northern Soul – and this one shows the roots of the genre – and really illustrates the way that so many 21st Century collectors are turning back to the generation before Motown. Titles include "I Say Hello" by Jimmy Breedlove, "Darling I Know Now" by The Mystics, "Because Of You" by The Dreamers, "Boss Bossa Nova" by Bellino, "Summertime" by Barbara D'Orleans, "Hi Fi Baby" by Teddy McRae, "Humdinger" by Little Marie Allen, "Please Don't Go" by Johnny Acey, "Baby Oh Baby" by The Shells, "Oh What A Fool" by Big Jay McNeeley, and "I Walk On" by Little Tommy & The Elgins. Stax Records was so great at the start, the label kept on recording and releasing amazing music far past its familiar hits – so much so that the b-sides of their singles were often every bit as great as the better-played sides! ✨✧ VariousBlame It On The Dogg – The Swamp Dogg Anthology 1968 to 1978 ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s/1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Jerry "Swamp Dogg" Williams is a man of many talents – a musical reach that goes way beyond his familiar solo records of the 70s, and which stretches back strongly with some deep roots in 60s soul! Back in the day, Williams worked often as a producer, arranger, and songwriter for a variety of different artists – a good deal of whom are featured on this set – one of the best collections we've ever seen of Jerry's mighty talents in the studio! In a way, Williams is almost better behind the booth in the studio than he is in front of the microphone – as he's got a way of handling an artist that really gets to the heart of their talents – mixed with his own sense of hutspah that helps get the recordings out to the market where a weaker producer might have failed at the job. CD features 24 tracks in all, along with some great notes on these other Swamp Dogg productions by Jerry – and tracks include "Plea #3" by Eleanor Grant, "Your Best Friend" by The Drifters, "He's Gone" by Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles, "On Your Way Home" by C & The Shells, "Shipwrecked" by Jerry Williams, "Stop Knocking" by Ruth Brown, "God Bless" by Wolfmoon, "Complication #4" by Arthur Conley, "Don't Trust A Woman" by Slick N The Family Brick, and "What's So Wrong With You Loving Me" by Kenny Carter. ✨✧ Eloping With The Sun (William Parker/Joe Morris/Hamid Drake)Counteract This Turmoil Like Trees & Birds ... CD
Rogue Art (France), 2016. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautifully earthy performance – and a set that not only has the three members of the trio on their trademark instruments, but also picking up a wide range of other elements too! Joe Morris is perhaps the most striking here – as in addition to guitar, he also uses banjo, fiddle, bass, banjouke, pocket trumpet, and even a bit of whistles – a sonic sense of variety that's matched by Parker's use of shakuhachi, sintir, n'goni, and thumb piano – all instruments that he plays with the same deeply spiritual currents of his work on bass! Hamid Drake sticks mostly to percussion – a range of drums, cymbals, and gongs – but overall, his performance feels as open and organic as the others – far beyond both standard and free jazz, into a mode that almost works in some ethnographic currents as well. The whole record's as poetic as the title – and tracks include "Profound Branches", "The Sky Was Purple Blue", "Energy Of Patience", "The Rhythm Of Butterflies", "Endless Galaxies", and "Grass Beneath The Cracked Shells". Broad/Aloha Got Soul, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The last album ever recorded by Arthur Lyman – a set that really returns to the spare, subtle genius of his earliest exotica albums in the 50s – but with a sound that's maybe even more stripped-down and overall! The record is very heavy in vibes, and has light woodwinds, some sound effects, and just a bit of percussion – and rather than try to evoke the dynamic energy of the jungle, Lyman is here in a more meditative style – almost as if he's watching the sun set down over the Pacific, while sipping on a mai tai, and letting the last glow of the day wash over him. The sound is beautiful, and very meditative – and titles include "The Magic Islands", "Akaka Falls", "Shells", "Waipi'o", and "Imi Au Ia Oe". LP, Vinyl record album

A definite batch of nuggets from the Warner Brothers vaults – not just rare singles on Warner, but material from now-owned labels like Colpix, Vault, Era, and Del-Fi – all brought together in one mighty cool selection of tracks! The material here is all in the surf and hot rod style promised by the title – about half instrumental, half vocal – which makes for a nice sort of interplay between the artists, and the kind of creative compilation approach that you don't always get from a major label. There's plenty here we'd never heard before, and most of the cuts are far from the hits – nuggets that include "Barefoot In The Sand" by The Sea Shells, "Skate Board" by Sidewalk Surfers, "Johnny Surfboard" by Barry Mann, "Latin'ia" by The Sentinels, "Shame Girl" by The Neptunes, "School is A Gas" by The Wheel Men, "Sammy The Sidewalk Surfer" by The Surfettes, "Our Favorite Martian" by Bobby Fuller & The Fanatics, "Go Go GTO" by Carol & Cheryl, "Skiing In The Snow" by The Beach Girls, "The Okie Surfer" by The Country Boys, "I Do" by The Castells, and "Swimtime USA" by The Life Guards. Cotillion, Late 60s/Early 70s. Near Mint- 10x7" Box Set ... Out Of Stock
A killer collection of singles from the legendary Cotillion arm of Atlantic Records – all presented as individual 7" records with original labels, served up in a hip limited edition package! The work here would already be great as a CD compilation – but it's extra special when served up in this stunning format – like finding a pile of rare soul singles in the back of a rack in an overlooked record store – still in great shape, and ready to explode anew on your turntable! The music is very well-chosen – and includes cuts by some key artists who only worked briefly for Cotillion, and never cut a full album for the label – such as Baby Washington, Otis Clay, or Walter Jackson. Other artists are ones who really hit their height at Cotillion, but still remain relatively obscure – and the singles here easily represent some of their best work ever. All cuts are right from the hippest tail end of the 60s – and titles include "Do Right Woman" and "That Kind Of Lovin" by Otis Clay, "Keep On Striving" and "Come On Let Me Love You" by Moses Smith, "Night After Night" and "The Love That I Needed" by The Blendells, "The Love Of My Woman" and "I Wanna Go Home" by Darrell Banks, "I've Fallen In Love" and "You Are The Circus" by C & The Shells, "Any Way That You Want Me" and "Life Has Its Ups & Downs" by Walter Jackson, "I Gotta Get Back To Lovin You" and "LA/USA" by Hollywood Spectrum, "I Don't Know" and "I Can't Afford To Lose Him" by Baby Washington, "Don't Play That Song" and "People In Love" by Lou Johnson, and "Ain't No Sun" and "Murder IN The First Degree" by The Dynamics. 7-inch, Vinyl record

VariousIt's A Happening – Texas Girls Of The 60s ... CD
Cicadelic, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $4.99 14.98
One of the coolest compilations yet on the Cicadelic label – a great collection of sweet, yet fairly rumbling singles from Texas girl group rock from the mid 60s – long-unheard numbers from The WordD, Friday And The Girls, The Heart Beats, The Bombshells, Linda Pierre King and The Penthouse! The Heart Beats came out of Lubbock to become the best known of the girls featured here in the original period – but it it's all great stuff, from garage rock organ & guitar groovers to sweeter vocal pop. Includes "Today Is Just Tomorrow's Yesterday" by The WordD, "An Older Boy" by Friday And The Girls, "Crying Inside", "Choo Choo Train", "Poor Side Of Town" and more by The Heart Beats, "Hard Lovin Babe", "Blackness", "Tiny Sparrow", "My Boot Heels Are Travelin" and more by Linda Pierre King, "You're Always Around" by The Penthouse and more. 25 tracks in all! CD
