Dan GreerBeale Street Soul Man – The Sounds Of Memphis Sessions – 22 Lost Southern Soul Masterpieces From The Renowned Writer, Producer & Artist ... CD
Kent (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
The first-ever tribute to this overlooked genius of southern soul – a set that brings together the rare early 70s singles from Dan Greer, plus a huge amount of unreleased work as well! Dan recorded these cuts for the Sounds Of Memphis label, in a style that really shows the changes in southern soul taking place at the time – that rich move forward you'd hear in the music of Sam Dees, Jimmy Lewis, and other key contemporaries who, along with Greer, really helped shake free of some of the 60s cliches of the genre – and stepped forth strongly with a sense of pride and power that's really amazing! The music's definitely got a Memphis vibe, but also echoes a bit of Nashville and Jackson soul as well – and Greer's slight lyrical twang is a really great fit for the slight bite in the way he puts his songs together. Titles include "Hook Line & Singer", "Shell Of A Man", "Thanks To You Girl", "How Does It Feel", "Bless You", "Voodoo Woman", "Share", "So Good To Be Young", "Any Moment Now", "Natural Reaction", "Only The Beginning", and "I'm A Lucky Guy". ✨✧ Stanley Turrentine with the Three SoundsBlue Hour – The Complete Sessions ... CD
Blue Note, 1960. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
During the early 60s, Blue Note wisely cut a number of sessions that took advantage of their soulful in-house rhythm trio The Three Sounds. The group recorded more than a few successful albums under their own name – but they also did a few great records that feature them backing up a more famous soloist. Such is the case with this one, in which Gene Harris and crew back up Stanley Turrentine for a beautifully mellow set of late nite tracks, played with an easy rolling groove missing from some of Turrentine's other, more full-on sessions at the time. At the time, Blue Note recorded enough material for 2 albums – but only one was ever issued in the US (although a second has recently come out from Japan.) Now, all the tracks are combined on a very nice 2CD set that includes all the original material – with tracks that include "Alone Together", "There Is No Greater Love", "Blue Hour", "I Want A Little Girl", and "Blue Riff". Norgran/Verve, Early 50s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Kind of a loosely thrown together session that has Carter at the core, Harris joining in on a number of numbers, and Gillespie taking up his horn for the last 2. The record's got a good relaxed Verve feel – and although the style is more jam session in operation, the tracks are short and tight. Titles include "Angel Eyes", "The Song Is You", "Frenesi", and "That Old Black Magic" – and the record's got a wonderfully cool cover. CD includes 42 tracks nicely divided up into "strings" and "small group" sessions. CD

Joe FarnsworthCity Of Sounds ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2021. Used ... $9.99
A rock-solid trio set from the great drummer Joe Farnsworth – one that draws every bit as much of its strength from the piano of Kenny Barron and bass of Peter Washington – both players who work together with Joe on a set of tunes that feel effortless, but which are filled with complex ideas and never-ending energy! A fair bit of tunes are originals by Barron or Farnsworth – tunes that partly stand as a tribute to New York as it wakes up from the dark days of 2020 – and there's this really positive spirit to the record that keeps on going all the way through, and which also transforms the standards as well. Kenny is really at the top of his game here – taken into really new territory by Farnsworth's work on the kit – and titles include "No Fills", "City Of Sounds", "New York Attitude", "Bud-Like", "Ojos Carinosos", and "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise". A full funky set of tracks from Will Sessions – a record that more than lives up to the group's previous legacy, but also seems to take them into this cool cosmic territory – maybe even the "electromagnetic reality" promised in the title! There was always raw funk energy at the Will Sessions core, but this time around it's almost as if it's wrapped up in some sweet spacey sounds that echo the 70s revolution of artists like Lonnie Liston Smith or Larry Mizell – which, as you can imagine, only makes the elements at the core even sound better! Joe BataanLost Sessions – New York 1976 ... CD
BGP (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
Joe Bataan working in a pronounced dancefloor soul mode! While the legendary Bataan was no stranger to the fusion of Latin, soul and funk, this some of the most club soul oriented sounds from Joe we've ever heard – and the sessions are seeing official release for the first time ever! The recording feature players who worked on Joe's stellar Afrofilipino and features a backdrop of wonderful Afro and Latin percussion and rhythms with the best sounds of the NYC dancefloor soul in the mix – with uptempo and midtempo vocal numbers flirting with disco and modern soul very nicely – with solid lead vocals and groovy female backup! Most tunes bring a bit of harp into the mix for a little more of a soar that plays off the percussion in really cool way. Titles include "Sadie", "When We Get Married", "My Cloud", "I Need Love", a take on the Isaac Hayes "Theme From The Men", "Let Me Kove You", "My Opera" and "I Do Love You". CD

Eugene ChadbourneLost Eddie Chatterbox Sessions ... CD
No Prestige/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1977. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
Magnificent early work from Eugene Chadbourne – a set that was recorded on Christmas Day, 1977 – and only issued a decade later on cassette – but sounds that are every bit as mindblowing as the material on Chadbourne's first few albums! The music here is heavy on compositions from Thelonious Monk – and the set also features Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, and Ornette Coleman tunes too – all reworked by Chadbourne with this incredible acoustic guitar style – very freewheeling, but still tied to the roots of jazz through a sense of melody – in ways that are maybe even more illustrative of his role in the scene than some of his other work. At one level, there's an acoustic guitar craft here that stretches back to the early blues recordings, but through a strong sense of avant freedom – ala Captain Beefheart – but Eugene's care with the tunes, mixed with his expressive phrasing, also put him in a space that's somewhere between the world of Derek Bailey and Fred Frith, and that of jazzman Barney Kessel, whose name he's holding in the poster on the cover. Titles include "5th Of Beethoven", "Reflections", "Off Minor", "San Francisco", "Hackensack", "Dewey Square", "Central Park West", "Brilliant Corners", and "Light Blue". Also includes a number of Chadbourne originals – and unissued tracks as well! CD

Bill EvansSesjun Radio Shows Vol 1 – Dutch Radio Sessions ... CD
Ultra Vybe (Japan), Early 70s. New Copy ... $18.99
Sublime live work from the great Bill Evans – two different radio performances from the 70s, both of them great! The first half might be the most notable – as the set just features the bass of Eddie Gomez alongside Bill's piano – a pairing we love so much, and which sounds so incredible, we don't even miss the drums at all – because Eddie's got such an inherent sense of rhythm that he fits perfectly with Evans' stunning approach to the piano – on titles that include "Two Lonely People", "Some Other Time", "Up With The Lark", and "TTT". Drummer Elliot Zigmund joins the duo on the second half of the set – but as with his other great work with the trio during the decade, he's a master of understatement – and still really lets Gomez and Evans control the flow – especially Bill, who often begins tunes in a way that feels as if he's not even going to wait for the others to join in! Titles include "Sareen Jurer", "Blue Serge", "Sugar Plum", and "Morning Glory". CD

GrapefruitYesterday's Sunshine – The Complete 1967/1968 London Studio Sessions ... CD
RPM (UK), 1967/1968. New Copy ... $14.99 20.99
Incredible pop psych sounds from Grapefruit – a group who might be best known for their early inclusion in the Beatles' Apple Corps – but who can easily stand on their own with the strength of material like this! The production is superb, and the overall vision in the music is sublime – trippy touches, but never too many – and vocals that echo out with both a sense of harmony in the group, and some beautiful larger touches in the studio! The whole thing's got a subtle power that we'd rank right up there with The Zombies, just as they were starting to get great – and the collection finally gets these guys out from the shadows of The Beatles, to show the world how great they were on their own. CD features a number of unissued tracks, and titles taken from tapes and brilliantly remastered – and the set features 20 titles that include "Dead Boot", "Dear Delilah", "Breaking Up A Dream", "Elevator", "Another Game", "Yes", "Ain't It Good", "Sweet Little Miss No Name", "Theme For A Lonely Queen", "Round & Round", "One More Try", "Yesterday's Sunshine", and "Do What You Want To". Not the original Quatermass EP from The Heliocentrics – but material that takes off in an even fuller, heavier direction – and which may well be the funkiest sounds we've heard from these guys so far! The music is stunning right from the very first heavy bassline and sharp drum crackle – more focused, more full-on, and more funky than before – with this mindblowing mix of super-tight rhythms and nicely trippy work on keyboards and guitar – all freaky and fuzzy, but always with a sense of purpose, too – and never just crazy for the sake of crazy! These guys really hit a new high with this set – simply wonderful, and at a level that has us falling in love with them all over again. Picadilly/BGO (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
A huge amount of music from The Ivy League – a hip UK group from the 60s, but one who never crossed over big on our side of the Atlantic! The trio were first formed to sing backup vocals on sessions for other folks, but they clearly rose up on their own, thanks to well-crafted harmonies that are clearly inspired by some of the bigger American pop acts of the times, but which also often have a surprising current of jazz – quite a nice blend as these guys can shift between styles you might hear from the Four Seasons and Four Freshmen, with maybe dose of The HiLos thrown in for good measure! The setting is definitely rock, though – superbly produced in the best Brit style of the 60s – which helps give a very unique spin to the way these guys come together. This huge set features everything known to have been recorded by the group – the full albums This Is The Ivy League, Sounds Of The Ivy League, and Tomorrow Is Another Day – plus 19 more songs from singles and EP releases! Yusef LateefLast Savoy Sessions ... CD
Savoy, 1957/1959. Used 2 CDs ... $18.99
Incredible early work from Yusef Lateef – some of his best! On these early Savoy side, Lateef is drawing from the wealth of influences that were running through the Detroit jazz underground of the 50s that spawned him – and apart from a strongly-conceived bop-influenced sound, you'll also hear Lateef experimenting a lot with jazz exoticism, using different reed instruments and odd small-group arrangements in a manner that's sort of a more "inside" version of similar work done at the time by Sun Ra and group. Lateef's work at this point is a key link in a tradition of exploratory Afro-centric jazz that runs through Roland Kirk's "Black Classical Music" of the 60s, and the underground output of labels like Tribe or Strata East during the 70s. About half the cuts on here are fairly straight, and still pretty nice, but those that aren't will open your eyes to Lateef's genius! Includes titles from The Fabric Of Jazz, The Dreamer, Jazz & The Sounds Of Nature, and Prayer To The East – with 19 numbers that include "Arjuna", "Valse Bouk", "Check Blues", "Gypsy Arab", "Sram", "Lover Man", and "8540 Twelfth Street". Tremendous solo work from the great Joe McPhee – recorded alone at home during 2020, as you might guess from the title – but a set that has Joe being wonderfully expressive, in the very personal way that you'd know if you've ever seen him live in performance! McPhee mostly blows tenor, but he also speaks at points – even quoting some lines from Black Panther – and brings in some field recordings, and even makes sounds on water and a pie tin too – all with this mandate to be as fully expressive as possible, even in a situation of isolation – a beautiful testament to the artistic fire that has kept McPhee going as one of the most important improvisers in jazz over the decades! Maybe one of the most beautiful records we've ever heard from the mesmerizing Zeena Parkins – a set of solo work, mostly done on her electric harp – an instrument that she hasn't used in awhile, but which is wonderfully reawakened here! There's a sonic sensitivity to the record that really brings us back to why we first fell in love with Parkins so many years ago – and the electric harp sounds hardly like you might guess from an instrument of such a name – as Zeena turns it into a conveyor of all sorts of sounds and tones, with extra help from percussion, assorted pedals,a nd some found objects! ✨✧ Hermeto Pascoal & Grupo Vice VersaViajando Com O Som – The Lost 76 Vice Versa Studio Sessions (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Far Out (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $28.99 32.99
A never-issued album by the great Hermeto Pascoal – recorded in the space between his 70s classics Slaves Mass and A Musica Livre – and every bit as amazing as those classics! The music here is fluid, open, and a fantastic mix of jazz and all of Hermeto's new ideas about musical structure – performed at a level that's highly organic, and with that completely individual vision that Pasocal brought to his sound from the start! This isn't typical Brazilian fusion of the time, but nor is it anything like the tighter sounds that Airto and Flora Purim were recording up in the US – instead, a musical mode that's completely in its own space, and which needs only one listen to convince you of the master's genius. The group here is overflowing with young talent – Lelo Nazario on keyboards, Nivaldo Ornelas and Mauro Senise on saxes and flute, Toninho Horta on guitar, Zeca Assumpcao on bass, and Ze Eduardo Nazario on drums – all important musical visionaries on their own, working together here to hit an even new level of creativity. Aleuda Chaves sings wordlessly on a bit of the record – and the whole thing has that blend of soaring sound and lyricism that marks Pascoal at his best. Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99 29.98
A fantastic look at one of the biggest contributions that Cuba ever made to music in the 20th Century – the rise of the jam session and descarga scene in Havana right before the revolution – a moment that saw an already-great style get even better in the hands of a few key musicians! Afro-Cuban sounds were nothing new to that city, but as the 50s moved on, the players on the scene adopted lots of influences from American jazz – and were really opening up in ways that were as open and expressive as they were fiercely collaborative – moving past the idea of a tighter ensemble with a star leader, and instead bringing together smaller groups with soloists that really got lots of space to do their thing – as did the percussionists, who really drive the music here! Most of the tracks feature some sort of vocals, but also have plenty of standout solos too - and the set features a huge amount of tracks by Cachao in his prime, plus lots more by Julio Gutierrez, Walfredo De Los Reyes, Rolando Aquila, Fajaro, Nino Rivera, and Chico O'Farrill – served up here with a total of 55 tracks on 3CDs. ✨✧ Lou Donaldson & The 3 SoundsLD + 3 ... LP
Blue Note, 1959. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic meeting between alto giant Lou Donaldson and Blue Note's crack Three Sounds combo – the great piano trio led by the mighty Gene Harris! The formula was one that Blue Note employed on a number of sessions from the time – and it makes a lot of sense, because the Three Sounds are a very tight rhythm group, just waiting for a strong soloist to front their rolling soulful grooves – in ways that really set sessions like this apart from their standard albums for the label. On this one, the Sounds give Lou a nice tight backing, and he repays the favor by laying down some very tight, very in-the-pocket solos with a good soul jazz groove. Tracks include "Jump Up", "Confirmation", "Smooth Groove", and "Blue Moon". LP, Vinyl record album

Drummer Hamid Drake has appeared on countless records over the years – even some as spare as duo improvisation sessions – yet this album is a long-overdue first solo effort from Drake, and one that allows us to hear his sensitive touch on the kit even more than before! Drake's always been a very musical percussionist – able to get all sorts of sounds out of a simple drum kit, in ways that almost feel as melodic as they do rhythmic – not in any sort of Krupa-like style, as Hamid's definitely a free improviser – but with a warmth and understanding of these familiar elements, unlocked in a really personal way! That's the approach used here on all the tracks – a loving set of dedications dedicated to contemporaries who include Don Cherry, Milford Graves, Paul Lovens, Fred Anderson, Adam Rudolph, and others. A solo performance from groundbreaking saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, but one that's got sort of a "phantom" partner in Peter Brotzmann – as Mats works here from the boxed set of musical scores that Brotzmann originally created for his Chicago Tentet! Gustafsson plays selections from "Box 1" and "Box 2" – all set up by cards that cue the action for his improvisation – not a real set of musical notations, but ideas conveyed by images – which Mats then delivers on sopranino, soprano, alto, baritone, and bass saxophones – plus a few saxophone mouthpieces as well! There's few folks who can create such a range of sounds in such a setting – and the whole thing is not only a testament to Gustafsson's ongoing solo skills, but also his ability to relate to a key contemporary like Brotzmann. Mosaic, 1920s/1930s/1940s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing set throughout – not just for the musical growth of Coleman Hawkins, but also for the development of the tenor sax in jazz, too! These sides could very well be said to be THE seminal recordings for tenor – the records that helped transform the instrument from a bit of a trick noisemaker into one of the most dominant voices in jazz during the 20th century – the beginning of a rich legacy that went onto encompass Lester Young, Stan Getz, John Coltrane, and so many others! The package captures Coleman Hawkins right at the start of his career – with vital early 78rpm recordings that move from trad to swing to some of the modern combo sounds that Hawkins would blow in the postwar years. And the range of settings is amazing, too – not a loose collection or mish-mash of material, but a really thoughtful progression that has Hawkins working with Mamie Smith, Fletcher Henderson, Clarence Williams, The Chocolate Dandies, and McKinney's Cotton Pickers in the early years – then moving up to work as a leader on his own – as well as material with Lionel Hampton, Benny Goodman, Benny Carter, and Count Basie. Most of the later material is for small labels – like Baronet, Cont, Meritt, Neatwork, and others – and the early sides are for Okeh, Columbia, Vocalion, Brunswick, and other smaller imprints. Features 190 tracks in all, and very copious notes, too – an amazing package from Mosaic! CD

Timeless sounds from this legendary group – a Somalian combo who issued all this music only on cassette back in the 80s, and who finally get a proper presentation in a much more durable format! The music is at once ancient and contemporary – with plenty of echoes of older East African rhythms and unusual horn inflections – blended with occasional use of electric guitars or keyboards, but still at a level that never overwhelms the music in the sort of way that certain West African groups were hitting at the time – which leaves the cuts here nice and raw, and with an energy that really holds up brilliantly after all these years. In addition to providing the first proper format for this work, the set's also got some great notes too – and presents tracks that include "War Wayneey", "Umaayey Iyo Abo", "Wiilkii Aan Ku Waashee", "Shavdan Buulow", "Haba Ley Habaaree", and "Ruuney". Lateef himself is playing tenor, flute, and oboe – which he uses to craft these eerie snakecharmer lines that work perfectly with the modal grooves of the tracks – very unusual rhythms for the time, and a real precursor to some of the world jazz experiments to come from overseas. Arto sings and plays guitar – but the results are hardly as ordinary as that might make you expect – as Lindsay moves from noise one minute to sweeter crooning the next – all with an understanding of the boundaries of sound, and the pleasures in stepping back after reaching them in performance. Seminal sounds from one of the most important labels of the early bebop years – a tiny imprint based in LA, but one that played a big role on the New York scene as well! Dial Records is often best-remembered for documenting some key early material by Charlie Parker – but as you'll see in this set, the company had a wonderful ear for other artists too – and managed to record some incredible work during a relatively short span of time! The tracks here were all done in a span of less than four years – from mid 1945 through late 1948 – yet together, they represent a blueprint of bop that would last for years to come – material that has often come out in varied formats over the years, and finally gets its full, proper presentation here – in an overstuffed box that's in the best Mosaic Records tradition! One of Ornette Coleman's best recordings from the 70s – and like his other album for Columbia, quite a change from the freewheeling sounds he was blowing over at Blue Note! The style here is a bit more high concept, but in a good way – with all the edges that Coleman had developed from the late 50s onward, brought into tighter focus for the Columbia setting – given a bit more complexity, although still with plenty of room for freedom – and played both with a smaller combo, and a slightly larger group. The mix of players is as striking as the sounds on the record – and includes Coleman on alto, trumpet, and violin – plus Dewey Redman on tenor, Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, Bobby Bradford on trumpet, Jim Hall on guitar, Cedar Walton on piano, Charlie Haden on bass, and Billy Higgins and Ed Blackwell on drums. Asha Puthli sings a bit on the larger ensemble tracks – making a rare appearance here before her 70s soul career in Germany – and titles include "What Reason Could I Give", "Street Woman", "The Jungle Is A Skycraper", and "All My Life". 2CD set also features all the material from the Broken Shadows album as well – plus 3 previously unissued bonus tracks. Other titles include "Happy House", "Elizabeth", "Good Girl Blues", "Broken Shadows", "Rubber Gloves", and "Written Word". CD

✨✧ Lou Donaldson & The 3 SoundsLD + 3 (XRCD-24 pressing) ... CD
Blue Note/Audio Wave, 1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
CD

✨✧ Bill EvansInterplay Sessions ... LP
Riverside/Milestone, 1962/1982. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A real standout in the Bill Evans catalog for Riverside – and that's saying a lot, given how important all of his Riverside albums are! The core session's a rare quintet outing for Evans – one that breaks the mode of the usual trio format by adding in Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and Jim Hall on guitar – alongside rhythm players Percy Heath on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums – already a unique enough match for Evans' talents. In a way, the record's one of those sessions that Riverside would sometimes do – pairing a key new voice as a leader with others in an all-star group – but in another way, it's also a return to the sound that first brought Evans' to a wider audience in the 1957 and 1958 years – when he was working in non-trio groups with more famous players – adding his unique piano stylings to their (then) better-known solo modes. The pairing of Evans and Hall has been beautifully documented on other records – and sounds equally great here – but the real treat is Freddie Hubbard's horn, which often lays back on most of the tracks, then bursts in with a brashness that really ignites some of the tunes! He's playing a bit muted here, trying to go for that Miles/Evans combination from the late 50s – but that's plenty ok with us, as we love those records a lot. Titles include "When You Wish Upon A Star", "You & The Night & The Music", "I'll Never Smile again", "You Go To My Head" and the Evans original, "Interplay". This double-length set also expands the original Interplay album with even more material from another group session in 1962 – a set recorded also with Philly Joe Jones on drums and Jim Hall on guitar – plus Ron Carter on bass and Zoot Sims on tenor. Titles include "Time Remembered", "Loose Bloose", "Fun Ride", "There Came You", "Fudgesickle Built For Four", and "My Bells". LP, Vinyl record album

Far Out (UK), 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Fresh Sound (Spain), 1953/1954/1955. Used ... Out Of Stock
Seminal modern work from trombonist Urbie Green – a collection that features him at the head of a largeish group on three different sessions! First up is material from a 10" Blue Note album titled New Faces New Sounds – a beautiful set of modernist bop tracks has GReen leading a septet with some other lively, lesser-known young players, including Jimmy Lyon on piano, Doug Mettome on trumpet, John Murtaugh on tenor, and Sam Staff on baritone. This is killer stuff from the days when the Blue Note image wasn't so clearly formed as it was in the late 50s – with titles like "Johnbo Mambo", "La Salle", and "Incubator". Next up are 4 more titles from a rare 10" LP – Urbie Green & His Band, featuring Freddie Green on guitar (instead of Raney), Ruby Braff on trumpet, Med Flory on alto, Frank Wess on tenor and flute, and Sir Charles Thompson on piano. The sound is somewhat more traditional, but never too much so – and tracks include "Med's Tune", "Lullaby Of Birdland", "Old Time Modern", and "I Got It Bad". Last up is the full Bethlehem album Urbie – one of the strongest albums ever cut by trombonist Urbie Green – a player who had a heck of a lot of talent, but who unfortunately could sometimes end up in some schmaltzy settings. Fortunately, this isn't one of them – as the group includes players like Jimmy Lyon on piano, Oscar Pettiford on bass, Osie Johnson on drums, and Ike Horowitz on tenor – actually a nom-du-date for Al Cohn! The arrangements are tight, but never too much so – and there's a good degree of spirit in both the playing, and the compositions – some of which are by arranger Marion Evans. Titles include "Sneaky Pete", "Sassafras", "Melody In Bb", "How About You", and "Mutation". CD features 19 tracks in all. CD

Recorded in LA in 1970, the set captures Harris at his funky best – primed with a nice hard style after a few years of working with funk maestro Monk Higgins. Higgins produced this live set, and also contributed a number of excellent funky cuts – like "Black Fox", "Down Home", "Apollo 21", and "Put On Train". Plus, the CD also features 3 great soul jazz Beatles tunes – "Come Together", "Get Back", and "Eleanor Rigby". The stuff here pre-dates the underrated Jazz Money LP they recorded for BBE – and it also reaches further back in inspiration, with influences of 70s funky soul and soul jazz in the mix, filtered through a modern lens. Bear Family (Germany), 1928/1929. Used ... Out Of Stock
Seminal sounds in the birth of country music – and equally important to other American folk styles as well! The music in this set all came from two special stretches of recording by Columbia Records – sessions done in Johnson City, Tennessee – in October of 1928 and 1929 – when the label ventured south, and sent out a call for musicians of all types from Appalachia – hence the phrasing of the collection's title! The sides marked one of the first times anyone tried to collect so much regional music on record, and bring it out to a larger audience – and the huge amount of work here offers up a cross-section of different styles of the area – some of which were later featured in Harry Smith's Anthology Of American Folk Music. Yet this collection goes even farther than that famous series – to offer up not only 100 songs that have never appeared together before, but also a huge hardcover book – 136 pages, and filled with detailed notes on the music, the performers, and the sessions – with lots of images too. Artists include Roane County Ramblers, Roy Harvey, Clarence Greene, Charlie Bowman, The Grant Brothers, Bill & Belle Reed, Jack Jackson, The Bentley Boys, Clarence Ashley, and The Moatsville String Ticklers – and the whole thing is one of the most historically-sensitive packages we've ever seen from Bear Family! Capitol/Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 24.99
A trio of albums from this famous Brazilian trombonist – all of them great! First up is Sweet Lucy – a wonderful album from Raul De Souza, cut during the height of his fame on the California scene! Like Raul's other work for Capitol, this record really sparkles from tight help from George Duke – who handles production, and some of the arrangements – and really helps De Souza find a tight jazzy groove! The instrumentation is a bit leaner than some of Raul's other records of this nature, which is a nice thing – as you get to hear plenty of keyboards from Patrice Rushen, Fender Rhodes from Dawilli Gonga, trumpet from Freddie Hubbard, and percussion from Airto. There's a bit of chorus vocals at times, but the main focus is on Raul's trombone solos – and cuts include of Joao Donato's "Banana Tree", plus "Sweet Lucy", "New Love", "Wild & Shy", "Bottom Heat", "Wires", and "At Will". Don't Ask My Neighbors is a tremendous moment for trombonist Raul De Souza – working here in a style that's light years past his roots in bossa nova! The set's got a heavy California vibe – a late 70s blend of jazz and soul handled by producer George Duke, who also arranges many tracks on the record – but still leaves plenty of room for Raul to step out strongly in the lead! Things are never too overdone, and handled with that sunny style that players like Duke did so well – lots of warm jazzy elements in the backings, coming from Fender Rhodes by Bobby Lyle, percussion from Airto, and drums from the great Harvey Mason – who really brings an edge to some of the groovers. Titles include a killer cover of the Skip Scarborough tune "Don't Ask My Neighbors" – plus "La La Song", "Overture", "At The Concert", "I Believe You", and "Jump Street". Til Tomorrow Comes is filled with soaring sounds from Raul De Souza – a Brazilian musician who first recorded under the name of Raulzinho during the bossa nova years – but one who's at the height of his powers here working on the Cali scene at the end of the 70s! Raul manages to blend his lead instrument with fuller arrangements from Arthur Wright – who brings in plenty of the best elements from contemporary R&B, adds in some backing vocals, yet never diminishes Raul's presence on the record at all! Instead, De Souza seems to draw all sorts of energy from the folks around him on the sessions for the record – really stepping out with the best sort of jazz funk grooves that Capitol Records were laying down at the time – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Up & At It", "Self Sealing", "Pleasurize", "Fe No Me Nol", and "Til Tomorrow comes". CD features bonus tracks – single versions of "Til Tomorrow Comes", "Sweet Lucy", and "Daisy Mae". CD

The group here is heavy on horns – two trumpets, two trombones, alto and tenor – shifting a bit throughout the concert here, and really rising wonderfully from the energy that Evans brings on piano! Orrin's sense of sound is beautiful – bold, rich, and visionary – while also still allowing plenty of room for the individual players to really do their thing – as the long tracks here are awash in great solos that have as much power on their own as the ensemble. A massive amount of radical records from the great Joe Gibbs – a producer who forever changed the face of Jamaican music with a legendary run of dub albums in the 70s! Joe was no stranger to the scene by the time of these tracks – but the sessions had him really burrowing in to very experimental territory, coming up with sounds that were years ahead of their time, and which set the tone for so many other dub productions in years to come – all very far from some of the chart-topping reggae hits of the decade! The work features plenty of hypnotic rhythms from Sly & Robbie, and great guitar work from Earl Chinna Smith – plus nice horn parts and keyboard lines too – all elements that are whipped up into a sonic souffle by the maestro. This 4CD set features this legendary run of records – Dub Serial, State Of Emergency, Majestic Dub, More Majestic Dub, and the African Dub albums, chapters 1 to 4 – with 12 tracks that have never been on CD before, and the usual deep detail and top-shelf presentation of the Doctor Bird label. There's a brash, lean energy to the record that's really telegraphed by the cover – a fantastic sound that definitely warrants the "Extra" at the top – as the pair work with some of the best players on the Peruvian scene on some blistering numbers with impeccable instrumentation! Titles include "Peruvian Boogaloo", "Vuela Mi Descarga", "Booga Jazz", "Peruvian Manteca", "Curerando", "Peruvian Guajira", and "El Sobrado". LP, Vinyl record album

Kirk Knuffke TrioGravity Without Airs ... CD
Tao Forms, 2022. New Copy 2CDs ... $18.99 20.99
The poetic title here is wonderfully well-suited to the album – as there's a free-floating, spacious quality to the music – yet one that's very different than some of the softer sessions that sort of reference might make you expect! Cornet player Kirk Knuffke always has a great sense of space in his music – and in this trio, it really seems to do a lot to the piano of Matthew Shipp, who can be a master of understatement at times, with really quietly brooding sounds on the keys – matched by the perfect energy of bassist Michael Bisio, who is exactly the right choice for this outing. If you know some of Knuffke's other work, you'll be surprised here – as there's more of an edge, and the session really builds a bridge to the world of Shipp, while finding this great spot in the middle for both to exist – on titles that include "Time Is Another River", "Paint Pale Silver", "Heal The Roses", "Today for Today", "Blinds", "June Stretched", "Between Today & May", "Stars Go Up", and "The Water Will Win". Prince Lasha EnsembleInsight ... CD
Columbia/Dusty Groove, 1966. New Copy ... $6.99 12.98
Tremendous work from the legendary Prince Lasha – a rare UK-only date from 1966 – and one that has the reedman working away from more familiar contemporaries like Sonny Simmons and Eric Dolphy! The approach on this session is very unique – as Lasha includes harp with the instrumentation, played by David Snell in a style that's right up there with Dorothy Ashby's best jazz work. Pianist Stan Tracey is also on board – playing beautiful notes that have a sharp modern edge, while still falling on the inside of the spectrum – and Lasha himself is especially great – blowing plastic alto sax and wooden flute, both of which have a slightly offbeat sound – but one that's surprisingly warm, which makes the album one of his most sensitive and soulful sessions ever! The tunes are a mix of standards and originals – and there's a wonderful sense of balance here – sounds that are sometimes more inside than other records from Lasha, but which have a really Dolphy-like sense of expression – right at home amidst a wider history of jazz, yet also reaching for new ideas at the same time. Pure genius throughout, and a record that was never made available to audiences in the US. Titles include "Nuttin Out Jones", "Impressions Of Eric Dolphy", "Out Of Nowhere", "Just Friends", "Body & Soul", and "Everything Happens To Me". CD

There's a nice criss-crossing of styles here – from the rawness of the earliest records, to the refined complexity of the mid 70s – and the album's way more than just an afterthought to the catalog – and is filled with great cuts that include the Bonham showpiece "Bonzo's Montreux", plus "We're Gonna Groove", "Poor Tom", "I Can't Quit You Baby". A real mind-trip – and an incredible document of the times – not just ideas floating around in the late 60s, but also new ways of making records too! The album is loosely based around ideas and writings from The Medium Is The Massage – McLuhan's important 1967 book, co-written with Quentin Fiore – and represented here as a wild sound collage that blends together music, sounds, media snippets, and readings by McLuhan, Fiore, and a host of other voices! The album's actually much more of a "happening" than a spoken word album – a real studio party that's cut up and messed up by all the added effects, sounds, and music – genius that comes from Jerome Agel, who put the whole project together – and delivered it to the loving hands of John Simon, who produced some other wonderful records of this nature for late 60s Columbia. A real delight throughout – and the kind of an album we wish people still kept making! Great reissue package – in a gatefold LP-styled sleeve, with additional artwork, rare photos, full notes on the sessions, and more! CD

Bethlehem, 1960. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A killer hardbop session – and a long lost classic! This stunning set is one of the best, and hardest sessions ever cut for the Bethlehem label – and it's got a raw pounding groove that sounds a lot more like some of the classic soul-tinged hardbop coming out on Prestige during the late 50s, than some of the more west coast oriented sessions that were usually Bethlehem's groove. Drummer Charlie Persip leads a crack quintet that includes Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Ronnie Matthews on piano, and the amazing Roland Alexander on tenor. Alexander was a fantastic soul jazz player in the early 60s – and he was hardly ever recorded, and his work on this session is worth the price of the album alone. Everyone's great, though – and even a young Marcus Belgrave makes an appearance on trumpet on one track, as Freddie Hubbard sits out. Tracks are all long, and titles include "Sevens", "Right Down Front", "The Champ", and "Soul March". LP, Vinyl record album

Amazing grooves like you've never heard before – seminal sides by Salah Ragab and his Cairo Jazz Band – work done by the percussionist who'd also worked with Sun Ra, but who's even more amazing here on his own! As you can probably guess from their name, the ensemble was an Egyptian one – working in an incredible blend of jazz and more traditional Egyptian-styled sounds – a blend that comes across with all the exotic feel of the pyramids at dawn, but which manages to groove like some of the best funky work from America at the time! Instrumentation includes lot of percussion, heavy piano and horns, and some especially great flute on most tracks – all coming together with a sound that's unlike anything else we've heard before. Back At Cha is a coulda-shoulda-woulda been great comeback effort, and if failed to chart them for renaissance revival, it sounds pretty sharp all these years later. Shorter's tenor solos are the main focus here, and he plays with creativity and imagination that you don't often hear on his later works – a sharp, soulful approach – but one that's already light years ahead of some of his Blue Note contemporaries – reaching for new ideas, but without any sense of effort – none of the overly-tense notes you'd get later, and instead just a marvelously fluid feel that really makes sense from the very first note – tremendous listening for both the lifetime jazz fan or the newcomer. A treasure trove of lost work from Wes Montgomery – very early recordings done in his native Indianapolis, and packaged with a great book of vintage photos as well! The set offers a key look at Wes' music before he moved onto greater fame out west – a great slice of sounds that are closest to his small combo work for Riverside, but which have an even homier feel overall thanks to the presence of some live performances mixed in with the studio sessions! Recording quality is great throughout, and tapes have been very lovingly restored – making the package way more than just a relic, and more a whole new listening experience from the early years of Wes – a magnificent way to hear that legendary tone, already full-formed at the start. Players include some real stalwarts from the Indy scene – including Mel Rhyne on both piano and organ, Earl Van Riper on piano, and on one track, brothers Buddy Montgomery on bass and Monk on piano. Titles include "Diablo's Dance", "Take The A Train", "Nica's Dream", "Round Midnight", "After Hours Blues", and "Misty". 22 page book comes with loads of photos and great essays! CD

✨✧ Takeo MoriyamaEast Plants ... LP
VAP/BBE (UK), 1981. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Really amazing sounds from Japanese drummer Takeo Moriyama – a record that's sometimes spiritual and organic, sometimes very unusually put-together – and which makes as much use of inventive percussion as it does the leaders drums! The group's got this very cool twin-sax approach – both tenor and soprano, each played by Toshihiko Inoue and Shuichi Enomoto – alternating between the instruments, and creating these textures that are sometimes sharp-edged, but always very striking – especially when the album's percussion from Yoji Sadanari really takes off! The whole thing almost feels a bit out of time, especially for its early 80s recording date – almost like one of those unusual Japanese spiritual sessions from a decade before, which also might not be what you're expecting from the 80s cover image too. Titles include "To O Ku", "Fields", "Ka Ze", "Ta Ke", and "East Plants". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Stanley TurrentineDearly Beloved ... LP
Blue Note, 1961. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Stanley Turrentine's most obscure sessions for Blue Note – a rare trio side featuring Roy Brooks on drums, and wife Shirley Scott on organ – billed on the original album cover as "Little Miss Cott"! The feel here is a bit more open than usual – no bassist on the set, just Roy's nicely free drums, Shirley's work on the organ keys and pedals, and Stan's soulful blowing over the top – a freewheeling mix that sounds totally great, and which almost hits some of the rootsier sounds of the tenor/organ scene that Stan and Shirley were rooted in at the time. There's a slightly mellow feel to the set, but one that always has plenty of soul – and titles include "Baia", "Wee Hour Theme", "Troubles Of The World", and "My Shining Hour". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousBig Deal – Weinberger Funk Library 1975 to 1979 ... CD
Sonorama (Germany), Late 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Big deal, indeed – as this excellent set looks at a really under-tapped source of sound library funk from the 70s – a small British company who was turning out glorious grooves in the same classic years as KPM or DeWolfe! The players here are mostly British, and many are more obscure than the other UK sound library musicians who worked for the bigger labels – and often had soundtrack and jazz studio recordings as well. These guys are fresh names, with fresh sounds, and some heavy grooves that have hardly seen the light of day after their limited 70s circulation on non-commercial albums. You've got a taste of a few Weinberger tracks on the Bosworth Library Sessions from Strut many years back – but these are all different grooves, chosen with the great ear for jazzy funk we expect from the Sonorama label. Titles include "Integration" by Trevor Bastow, "Rhythm Rhythm Rhythm" by Reginald Wale, "Over & Out" by Toni Campo, "Big Deal" by Midals Touch, "Santaren" by Vick Flick, "Focus On The Middle East" by Ishfahan Farid, "Knock On Wood" by Sid Dale, "Make No Bones" by Midals Touch, "Centrefold" by Toni Campo, "Soul Punch" by Piet Van Meren, and "Gone Gone Gone" by Reginale Wale. ✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyAccent On Africa ... CD
Capitol/Universal (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Wickedly hip work from Cannonball Adderley – and one of his real standout sessions for Capitol Records in the 60s! The set lives up to its "Africa" promise right from the very first note – and features a set of loud, proud tunes that really bring out the righteous sounds of this generation of new liberation – tunes that sparkle with lead alto and soprano sax from Cannon, but which really draw even more energy from the whole collective of musicians on the record – a hip lineup led by HB Barnum, who also did all the arrangements for the set! The result is a record that's unlike any of Adderley's other albums – from some of the evocative snakey lines on the top, to the hip mix of 60s Cali soul and African percussion on the bottom. And oh yeah, David Axelrod produced the whole thing too! Titles include "Gumba Gumba", "Up & At It", "Hamba Nami", "Ndolima", and "Lehadima". CD

✨✧ Horace Andy/Naggo Morris/Wayne JarrettHorace Andy Meets Naggo Morris/Wayne Jarrett Mini Showcase ... CD
Wackie's (Germany), 1983. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two great, classic reggae EPs on one CD – both impossible to find on vinyl! One of the best things about these Wackie's sessions with Horace Andy is that in addition to singing, he often contributed guitar and bass to the backing tracks alongside the Wackie's all stars, which was seldom heard on his Jamaican sides. His sweet falsetto sounds great – light and bright over super heavy but spare Wackie's rhythms which are suppled here in dub versions too. Naggo Morris is no slouch either, his richer, deeper voice a nice contrast to Andy. Andy voices "Prophesy" and "My Heart Is Gone" and Naggo voices "Come On And Tell Me" and "You Rest On My Mind". Mini Showcase is a sweet EP produced by Sugar Minott and Lloyd Bullwackie Barnes, with Wayne Jarrett's nice alto riding over some tremendous Wackie's rhythms. Four great tracks, three with dubs and one with Jarrett chatting inna DJ style: "You & I", "Live It Up", "Truly" and "Live & Love". CD

✨✧ Beach Boys20/20 ... LP
Capitol, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An understated masterpiece from The Beach Boys – a record that's probably best known for its inclusion of some key tracks from the Smile sessions – but an album that stands pretty darn nicely on its own! The group are really maturing here – and the mix of Smile-era songs and some of their later ones is really great – a wonderful follow-up to material explored on Friends, and a great hint at the genius to come on Sunflower. The album's essential listening if you dig post-Pet Sounds Beach Boys – especially before they hit their mix of nostalgia and indulgence in the 70s – and titles include the sublime "Cabinessence", plus "Do It Again", "I Can Hear Music", "Be With Me", "All I Want To Do", "I Want To Sleep", and "The Nearest Faraway Place". ✨✧ Anthony BraxtonFor Alto ... CD
Delmark, 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the first solo saxophone recordings of the 60s – recorded as one of the first few sessions by a young Anthony Braxton! As the title implies, the whole album features alto sax – played freely by Braxton with a depth of creativity and sense of humanity to rival any of the previous greatness of his generation from bigger names on labels like Impulse or ESP. There's a great sense of restraint here too – not one that has Braxton on the inside of the jazz spectrum, but which keeps him focused, and never to overly-indulgent in this new sort of setting. The sounds from his alto are clearly revolutionary – even from the perspective of many decades later – and we honestly think this record still beats most of the albums of this type that have come out in the years since it was first recorded! Tunes are all dedicated to Braxton's friends and heroes, in sort of a who's-who of the avant garde – and ttles include "To Composer John Cage", "To Leroy Jenkins", "To Murray De Pillars", and "To Pianist Cecil Taylor". Cadet, 1969. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Great work from Ray – and very much in the formula of his best Cadet records! The formula is simple – stick in 2 great original groovers, and fill the record with a few other covers of pop and jazz standards. Thanks to Richard Evans, who produced the sessions for Cadet, the grooves are great on nearly every track – and Ray sounds better here than on any other sides that we remember! In this case the originals are "Stick With It" and "Sound Ray" – both hard piano jams with a great downbeat and a nice dose of funk. Covers include "Song For My Father", "Con Alma", "Look Of Love", and "Scarborough Fair" – all very very nice! LP, Vinyl record album

A&M, 1972. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A warm, wonderful set of Gene Clark recordings from the early 70s – material that probably should have been issued as a proper album in the States back in the day, as sounds pretty much as solid to us as some of his great work in preceding years – but was issued only in Europe at the time! Roadmaster was pulled together from 1972 sessions that were essentially abandoned, but it's truly top notch Cali country rock featuring Byrds and Burrito Brothers in the sessions. Titles include "She's The Kind Of Girl", "Full Circle Song", "Roadmaster", "In A Misty Morning", "She Don't Care About Time", "Shooting Star", "Rough And Rocky", "One In A Hundred", "I Remember The Railroad" and more. ✨✧ Billy CobhamFunky Thide Of Sings ... CD
Atlantic (France), Mid 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Billy Cobham's always got something funky going on in his music – and this 70s classic for Atlantic Records has the drummer at the height of his powers – really mixing together jazz, rock, and funk impulses – all without some of the overindulgence of his more jamming records of the time! There's still some great trippy sounds at times – some fierce future jazz passages that have Billy's drums really propelling keyboards and guitar – but overall the tracks are short and focused, with a nice nod back to the kind of energy that Cobham brought to his sessions with other artists. One exception is the great "Moody Modes" – a sweet long electric track that almost feels like George Duke on MPS – alongside other cuts that include "A Funky Kind Of Thing", "Some Skunk Funk", and "Light At The End Of The Tunnel". ✨✧ Bill EvansInterplay ... LP
Riverside, 1962. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A real standout in the Bill Evans catalog for Riverside – and that's saying a lot, given how important all of his Riverside albums are! The session's a rare quintet outing for Evans – one that breaks the mode of the usual trio format by adding in Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and Jim Hall on guitar – alongside rhythm players Percy Heath on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums – already a unique enough match for Evans' talents. LP, Vinyl record album

Exactly the kind of record that's got us digging Japanese trio sessions from the 70s so much – a set that's filled with lots of warm, soulful sounds, creatively compelling changes, and fresh rhythms that really keep the tunes interesting! There's a slight undercurrent of funk on most numbers, but never too much – as the set still preserves all the best lyrical lines of pianist Kichiro Sugino, who steps beautifully around the bass of Kishio Kitahara and drums of Mitsaki Katayama – a perfectly-hinged trio who soar plenty on the record – more than enough to earn the "flight" in the title! This one's really a cut above – filled with wonderful energy, and never a dull moment throughout – a real gem that's waiting to be re-discovered by the 21st Century generation. Titles include "Unknown Point", "Arizona High Way", "It's Over", "Louis", and "First Flight". CD

Tao Forms, 2022. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Harold Land & Carmell JonesHarold Land/Carmell Jones Quintets – Complete Studio Recordings ... CD
Pacific Jazz/Lonehill (Spain), Early 60s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
One of the hippest jazz pairings on the LA scene in the early 60s – presented here in a 2CD set with nearly 4 albums' worth of material! First up is the well-titled Remarkable Carmell Jones – one of the few sessions cut as a leader by trumpeter Carmell Jones – a wonderfully talented player from LA, who was one of the leading lights in that city's hardbop scene during the early 60s! The set grooves like the best Blue Note sessions of the time – Jones leading a combo that features Harold Land on tenor, Frank Strazzeri on piano, Gary Peacock on bass, and Leon Pettis on drums – all working with a careful blend of soul jazz and modern influences, on a wonderful batch of well-written tunes. Titles include "I'm Gonna Go Fishing", "Night Tide", "Sad March", and "Stellisa". Next is the album Hear Ye, recorded for Atlantic in 1962, under the leadership of Land and Red Mitchell – a nice set from the LA hard bop/soul jazz underground – and it features great solo work by Land, Frank Strazzeri, and the underrecorded trumpet genius Carmell Jones! The album's got a lot more to offer than meets the eye – and is filled with lively lyrical original compositions like "Comara", "Pari Passu", "Catacomb", and "Triplin Awhile". The whole thing's a great bridge between Land's earlier sessions under his own name, and his later, similar partnership with Bobby Hutcherson. Next up are 4 titles from the album Business Meetin – the tracks on that set that only feature a small group with Jones and Land in the company of Frank Strazzeri on piano, Gary Peacock on bass, and Donald Dean on drums – on tracks that include "That's Good", "Suearl", "Hip Trolley", and "Beautiful Love". Last up is the album Jazz Impressions Of Folk Music, originally issued under Land's name for Imperial Records – and part of a short-lived early 60s attempt to make jazz cash in on the folk boom. Despite what might seem like a cheap gimmick, the set actually sounds great – grooving with a soulful swing, in that LA underground mode that always made for Land's best recordings. The group includes the great Carmell Jones on trumpet, plus Jimmy Bond bass, John Houston piano, and Mel Lee on drums. Titles include "Blue Tail Fly", "Tom Dooley", "Scarlet Ribbons", and "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine". CD

The title's an apt one – given that the record was the end of the tremendous run of records from Led Zeppelin – issued after the death of legendary drummer John Bomham – but the set's also way more than just an endpoint, as many of the tracks return to the group's beginning – and bring back unheard sounds from early 70s sessions! "Wearing And Tearing", and "Ozone Baby". Deluxe edition includes two CD's worth of additonal material including unreleased tracks, outtakes, and alternate mixes. CD
