Shirley EllisShirley Ellis – The Complete Congress Recordings ... CD
Connoisseur Collection (UK), Mid 60s. Used ... $11.99
24 tracks in all – and a mixture of hard soul with some of the sing-song pop numbers that forever made Shirley a hit with the kids! And yes, we all know that Shirley scored biggest with "The Name Game", one of those songs that Sesame Street and Divine make you never want to hear again – but she was also a heck of a soul vocalist, and on some of these numbers, she really shines with a rawness that will keep you coming back more than you thought! Titles include "The Nitty Gritty", "Give Me A List", "Don't Let Go", "You Better Be Good, World", "I Told You So", "The Clapping Song", "The Puzzle Song", "Whisper To The Wind", "This Is Beautiful", "I Never Will Forget", "Takin Care Of Business", and of course, "The Name Game". Edgar HendricksEdgar Hendricks Sings For The Very Young ... CD
Folkways, 1976. New Copy ... $12.99 16.98
A really unusual concept for a soul record, but one that works wonderfully all the way through – a mix of kid-oriented themes and warmly expressive vocals – with a vibe that almost feels like a hip 70s singer recording an album for Sesame Street! Edgar Hendricks works with just congas, bass, and piano on most tracks – this very cool, open approach that really demands a lot from his vocals – which rise to the occasion, and provide all these powerful, positive inflections on lyrics that most other singers would have just taken in a much straighter way! The result is very cool, and very special – like Bill Withers recording a special for the Children's Television Workshop in the 70s – with titles that include "The Bee & The Boy", "A Good Education Will Help You Through Life", "Song Of The Alphabets", "Let's Play A Circle Game", "Counting From One To Ten", and "Message To All Young People". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

✨✧ Oscar Peterson with Singers UnlimitedIn Tune ... LP
MPS, 1971. Sealed ... $24.99
One of the first albums cut by the fab Singers Unlimited – and the set that has them backed by the Oscar Peterson Trio! The Singers always mixed well with guest jazz talents – and the style of this albums gives their sweet harmonies a nice jazz-based groove and not too much cheese on the top – one of the leanest instrumental settings from their MPS era, and a nicely gliding groove that supports their voices wonderfully! The record includes great versions of "The Gentle Rain", "Once Upon A Summertime", "The Shadow Of Your Smile", and Thad Jones' great "A Child Is Born" – as well as a pretty crazy rendition of "Sesame Street"! Joe RaposoElectric Company – Original Soundtrack (CRA pressing) ... LP
CRA, 1974. Very Good ... $7.99
Brilliant stuff – the follow-up to Sesame Street, a hipper show that was aimed at older kids, and which kind of played up the groovier aspect of the music a bit more at times. The soundtrack features performances by Rita Moreno, Morgan Freeman, June Angela, and Skip Hinnant – as well as many others – and the tunes are a groovy groovy batch of tunes written by Joe Raposo in the same mode as his best work for Sesame Street. If anything, there's a bit more hippie in this one – as well as a bit more Multiplication Rock goofiness – as you'd guess by tunes with titles like "Giggles Goggles", "Silent E", "Easy Reader", "Clam Song", "Sign Song", "D", and "Punctuation".
