Johnny MercerMosaic Select (Capitol Recordings) (3CD set) ... CD
Capitol/Mosaic, Mid 40s. Used 3CD ... $44.99
The first-ever comprehensive collection of Johnny Mercer's work for Capitol Records in the 40s – the label he helped found at the time, and home to some of his greatest recordings ever! Mercer's best known as a swing-era songwriter, but he's also a hell of a singer too – a playful male vocalist who was a strong precursor to 50s singers like Jackie Paris, Matt Dennis, and Mark Murphy – like those artists, one who's both sensitive and swinging at the same time. The package features a whopping 79 tracks in all – most of which only ever appeared on 78rpm singles – and Mercers' usually got some great jazz backings behind him, from players who include Billy Butterfield, Cootie Williams, Jack Teagarden, and Nat King Cole. One of the best archival Mosaic sets in recent years – filled with great tracks that include "Box Bar Blues", "Cecilia", "Moon Faced Starry Eyed", "That's The Way He Does It", "Would Ya", "I've Been Hit", "Hooray For Love", "I Never Knew", "I May Be Wrong", "Sweet Lorraine", "Baby I'm True To You", "Ugly Chile", "San Fernando Valley", "GI Jive", "Evelina", and lots lots more! ✨✧ Dizzy ReeceDizzy Reece – Mosaic Select (Blues In Trinity/Star Bright/Soundin' Off/Comin' On) ... CD
Mosaic/Blue Note, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used 3 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The complete Blue Note recordings of trumpeter Dizzy Reece – an amazing West Indian player who made some big waves on the London scene of the late 50s, then came to the US to cut a few key sides! Reece had an approach to the trumpet that shared some of the boldness of his US contemporaries on the hardbop scene, but which also occasionally had a few more exotic touches as well – not just in Dizzy's phrasing, but also in the way he liked to set up a tune – mixing modern and soulful modes together nicely, in a way that made him a perfect match for the Blue Note era that boasted work by Horace Silver and Art Blakey! The 3CD set features Dizzy's three Blue Note albums Blues In Trinity, Star Bright, and Soundin Off – plus material that was unissued at the time, but later appeared on the now-deleted Comin On CD – a real lost treasure of a session that has Dizzy stepping out even more strongly than before. Players include Hank Mobley, Tubby Hayes, Donald Byrd, Art Taylor, Walter Bishop Jr, Stanley Turrentine, Musa Kaleem, and Art Blakey – and titles include "Blues In Trinity", "Color Blind", "Shepherd's Serenade", "Groovesville", "The Rebound", "A Variation On Monk", "Blue Streak", "Ye Olde Blues", "Comin On", "Sands", "Goose Dance", "Achmet", and "The Case Of The Frightened Lover". ✨✧ Bobby HutchersonBobby Hutcherson – Mosaic Select (Cirrus/Inner Glow/Waiting/View From The Inside/Knucklebean) ... CD
Blue Note/Mosaic, Mid 70s. Used 3CDs ... Out Of Stock
An incredible collection of work from vibist Bobby Hutcherson – some of his most righteous recordings ever, spread out over the span of 5 albums recorded for Blue Note in the mid 70s – one of which was only ever issued in Japan! The work here has Bobby taking off nicely from his years with Harold Land – and although the set includes two albums with Land, the excellent Cirrus from 1974, and the Japanese-only Inner Glow, the remaining albums feature a range of different players – including Manny Boyd on soprano and tenor sax, George Cables on piano, Larry Nash on electric Piano, Hadley Caliman on reeds, and Freddie Hubbard on trumpet. As with the better-known recordings with Land, the style here is flowing and open – an approach that starts in modal rhythms, and which moves into some of the more soaring, spacious modes shared by Bobby's contemporaries on the indie soul jazz scene – especially artists on labels like Black Jazz and Strata East. The albums here are all amazing – never too slick, and beautifully balanced, with a sense of focus that still makes Hutcherson one of the greatest vibists working at this point in his career. 3CD set features the albums Cirrus, Inner Glow, Waiting, The View From The Inside, and Knucklebean – featuring a whopping 30 tracks in all! ✨✧ Sam RiversSam Rivers & The Rivbea Orchestra – Trilogy – Mosaic Select (3CD set) ... CD
Mosaic, 2008/2009. Used 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Vital late work from the amazing Sam Rivers – masterful, energetic jazz orchestra pieces recorded live and in the studio with players culled from Orlando and the Central Florida areas around Rivers' adopted home – a treasure that finds Sam sounding as spry and fiercely creative in his 80s has he was half a lifetime ago! Trilogy features 3 unreleased sets – 2 live and one with studio recordings – and it's remarkably vibrant throughout. Sam started dabbling with orchestra jazz in the 70s, bring muscularity and dissonance to big band music in a wholly unique way, and he's been doing it as brilliantly as ever in recent years. 14 horns bring complex, but melodic sweep to the sound, with a 2 piece rhythm. We've been blown away by most of Sam's late period efforts and this exceptional 3CD set from Mosaic is as great as any of it. Players include Jeff Rupert, Chris Charles, David Pate and others on saxes, Tom Parmenter, Brian Scanlon and more trumpet players, Keith Oshiro and David Sheffield on trombone, Doug Mathews on bass and Rion Smith on drums. The first disc (Offering) was recorded at the Plaza Theater in Orlando in November of '08. Includes "Spice", "Ganymede", "Crux", "Aura", "Perkin" and "Pulsar". Disc two (Progeny) was recorded at Sonic Cauldron Studios in Casselberry, FL earlier in '08, and it includes "Robyn", "Cindy", "Monique", "Traci", Iisha", "Destiny" and more. Disc Three (Edge) is a return to the Plaza Theatre in April of '09, and it includes "Ridge", "Brink", "Precipice", "Verge", "Visions", "Point" and more. CD

✨✧ Charles TolliverCharles Tolliver Big Band – Mosaic Select (Music Inc/Impact/previously unreleased) ... CD
Mosaic, 1970/1975/1979. Used 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Early and mid 70s big band masterpieces from Charles Tolliver for Strata East – plus a brilliant batch of German recordings from 1979 with Hamburg's great NDR group that was never legitimately issued before now – in an amazing 3CD set from Mosaic! Disc One features the classic Impact – the first album by his legendary group on Strata East – a core quartet that features Tolliver on trumpet, Stanley Cowell on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Jimmy Hopps on drums and percussion – all augmented by some larger backings for the session! The core sound is amazing – with free lines that trade back and forth wonderfully, filled with life and a great lyrical sense of energy that Tolliver never had on some of his later sessions. The larger group hardly gets in the way at all – and they're mostly there just to shade in the background, but often drop out during the solos – giving full center stage exposure to Tolliver and Cowell! Tracks include "Ruthie's Heart", "Abscretions", "Household of Saud", and "On the Nile". Disc Two features Impact – an amazingly spiritual effort that really brings together the best strands of sounds running through the underground at the time! The format's a bit similar to Music Inc – with lots of strong lead action from Charles on trumpet, and Stanley Cowell on piano. But this time around, the larger group seems to be more fully integrated into the tunes – there not just to support the soloists, but to rise up with a full, proud sense of majesty that's really amazing. Other players include Cecil McBee and Reggie Workman on basses, Billy Parker and Warren Smith on percussion, Jon Faddis and Jimmy Owens on trumpets, John Gordon and Garnet Brown on trombones, and Charles McPherson, George Coleman, Harold Vick, and Charles Davis on saxes! Titles include great versions of the Tolliver classics "Plight" and "Impact" – plus "Mother Wit", "Lynnsome", and "Grand Max". Disc Three is a hidden gem from Tolliver's career – 1979 radio broadcast sessions with the NDR big band that includes Benny Bailey on trumpet, Herb Geller on alto, Wolfgang Dauner on piano, Lukas Lindholm on bass and Alvin Queen on drums. Here Tolliver plays some of the Strata material with these great European players who really seem to relish the opportunity – with each contributing brilliant solos. Includes "Ruthie's Heart", "Mother's Wit", Grand Max", "Impact" and more. CD

Blue Note/Mosaic, 1969/1970/1974. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Tremendous work from the immediate post-Coltrane years of McCoy Tyner – five albums' worth of material that show the pianist stretching out in bold new directions! Although a key part of the John Coltrane Quartet for most of the 60s, Tyner really hit a wonderful new vibe after the passing of the Great One – soaring into beautifully expansive directions with his music, and taking on some of the best impulses of the soul jazz underground of the time! These sessions – mostly recorded at the end of the 60s, but also featuring one date from a few years later – feature McCoy working with players who include Woody Shaw on trumpet, Gary Bartz on alto sax, Wayne Shorter on tenor, Freddie Waits on drums, Harold Vick on soprano sax, Alice Coltrane on harp, and Hubert Laws on flute. And the range of settings is wide too – ranging from small trio, to soaring larger group sides, to a few numbers done with a bit of added strings. 3CD set features the albums Expansions, Cosmos, Extensions, and Asante – a total of 21 long tracks in all! ✨✧ Dexter GordonDexter Gordon – Mosaic Select (Nights At The Keystone Vols 1, 2, & 3) ... CD
Mosaic, 1978/1979. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Late live recordings from the mighty Dexter Gordon – 3 CDs worth of material recorded at the Keystone Korner in the late 70s, all with an inventively-blown power to match Gordon's earlier live sets from the European scene! The format here is similar – with Dexter out front, laying down incredible lines on tenor sax – and getting support from George Cables on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, and Eddie Gladden on drums. But in a way, the music here is even stronger than before – as Gordon's got a sharper edge, focused solo approach, and is working with an agility that really leaves us breathless. The tracks are long, but have the energy of Gordon's shorter studio tracks for Columbia at the time – and although we're not always huge fans of the "soloist in unfettered live setting" style of recording, we've gotta admit that we really love these tracks! Titles include "You've Changed", "It's You Or No One", "Antabus", "Backstairs/LTD", "The Panther", "Tangerine", "Gingerbread Boy", and "I Told You So". CD

20th Century/Hip-O Select, 1973. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Barry White's got plenty to give here – a massive classic from his legendary early 70s years – and the first record to feature the maestro on his own as a lead act! The set's a masterpiece through and through – a sublime mix of soaring strings, soulful rhythms, and some killer compositions – a mini symphony in soul that forever set a standard for other artists to match! Barry's handing of the arrangements is great, with a bit of help from Gene Page – and when his magnificent vocals slide into the mix, things really take off – on a set of incredible cuts that includes the extended break classic "I'm Gonna Love You A Little More Baby", plus "I've Got So Much To Give", "Standing In The Shadows Of Yesterday", "I've Found Someone", and "Bring Back My Yesterday". CD features 2 bonus tracks – a killer instrumental of "Just A Little More Baby", and another instrumental of "I've Got So Much To Give". CD

ABC/Hip-O Select, 1963. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
BB King's soaring debut LP for ABC Records – a mix of grand numbers that find the legendary BB backed up in surprisingly soulful orchestra settings culled from bicoastal sessions in LA and NYC! BB King has a signature style that's pretty strongly rooted in homespun, truthspeaking rhythm & blues – and the strings, saxes and rich arrangements with the Belford Hendricks Orchestra, Maxwell Davis Orchestra, and Teacho Wiltshire Orchestra – captured in '62 and '63 – are just a step or two away from the groove that cats like Bobby Bland were working at the time. Sweet stuff from a true King! Titles include "Young Dreamers", "Be Myself", "Chains Of Love", "Blues At Midnight", "Sneakin' Around", "Tomorrow Night", "My Baby's Comin' Home", "Guess Who?", "You Ask Me", "I'm Gonna Sit In 'Til You Give In". ✨✧ Clifford Brown with Helen Merrill, Sarah Vaughan,Emarcy Master Takes Vol 2 – The Singers Sessions (3CD set) ... CD
EmArcy/Hip-O Select, Mid 50s. Used 3CDs ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful package of work from trumpeter Clifford Brown – his complete Emarcy master takes for work with three key singers in the 50s – Helen Merrill, Sarah Vaughan, and Dinah Washington! Brown's trumpet has a fluid, soulful style that's easily one of the most modern of the time – which makes for a really striking accompaniment for all vocalists included – especially Washington, who really breaks out from her bluesier modes on the Clifford Brown sides – making an argument here that the trumpeter really helped take her singing to the next level! The lavish 3CD package is in a cool 7" book-style cover, with a really beautiful full color book inside – and the set features a huge amount of work with Washington (2 of the 3 CDs) – with titles that include "No More", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "What Is This Thing Called Love", "Lover Come Back To Me", "I'll Remember April", and some ballad medley tracks from a jam session. The last CD features work with Sarah Vaughan and Helen Merrill – titles that include "April In Paris", "He's My Guy", "Jim", "I'm Glad There Is You", "I'm Crazy", "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", "Falling In Love With Love", and "Yesterdays". ✨✧ James BrownComplete James Brown Christmas (Christmas Songs/A Soulful Christmas/Hey America) ... CD
King/Hip-O Select, 1966/1968/1970. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
James Brown and Christmas – an amazing combination that yielded some incredible music in the late 60s! This set's the first to ever bring together all the Christmas music that James Brown recorded for King Records at the time – a massive set that features the complete tracks from three different albums – Christmas Songs, A Soulful Christmas, and Hey America – plus some rare bonus tracks too! You probably know that James Brown cut the odd Holiday tune – and have likely heard the classic "Santa Claus Go Straight To The Ghetto" on the airwaves in December – but you'll likely be stunned to see the full range of seasonal cuts that Brown recorded for King – all in a wonderful range of styles that moves from deep soul to jazz vocals to funky instrumentals, and back again! The package is all we might ever want for Christmas ourselves – as we've treasured our scratched-up copies of the records for years, but really appreciate them even more in this setting – along with the booklet's well-done notes on the music, and the direction that James was going for. The set features a massive 37 tracks in all – including "This Is My Lonely Christmas (parts 1 & 2)", "Let's Make Christmas Mean Something This Year", "Signs Of Christmas", "Santa Claus Santa Claus", "You Know It", "In The Middle", "Tit For Tat", "Christmas Is Coming", "Believers Shall Enjoy", "Hey America", "Go Power At Christmas Time", "My Rapp", "I'm Your Christmas Friend Don't Be Hungry", "Merry Christmas My Baby & A Verry Very Happy New Year", "Christmas Is Love", and "A Lonely Little Boy Around One Little Christmas Toy". Bonus cuts include "It's Christmas Time (parts 1 & 2)", "Santa Claus Is Definitely Here To Stay (single)", "You Know It (single)", and sing-along versions of a few tracks too! CD

✨✧ DeBargeTime Will Reveal – The Complete Motown Albums (3CD set) ... CD
Motown/Hip-O Select, Early/Mid 80s. Used 3CD ... Out Of Stock
The complete early-to-mid 80s albums DeBarge cut for Motown – The DeBarges, All This Love, In A Special Way and Rhythm Of The Night – plus a bonus disc of remixes and rarities – in this excellent 3CD set from Motown & Hip-O Select! Disc 1 features The DeBarges and All This Love albums. The first album is a great batch of harmony soul that updates the "family" sound of 70s groups like The Sylvers, Five Stairsteps, and others! The tracks on this record focuses nicely on the vocals, and really lets the harmonies come through in a beautiful way! Titles include "Hesitated", "What's Your Name", "Queen Of My Heart", "You're So Gentle So Kind", and "Strange Romance". All This Love is a stone pop soul winner with lots of electro arrangements – fuzzy keyboards and bass pedals grooving around in a way that's got traces of "street" electro, mixed with some super-smooth LA production, and used brilliantly by the group in a family-based pop harmony! Tracks that include "I Like It", "I'll Never Fall In Love Again", "All This Love", "I'm In Love With You", "Can't Stop", "It's Getting Stronger", and "Life Begins With You". Disc 2 features In A Special Way and Rhythm Of The Night. The former, again, comes with an undeniably catchy groove and it's made even better by the mellower numbers. Includes "Stay With Me", sampled to great effect, and a tune elevates this album above all the rest – plus "Time Will Reveal" (the previously unreleased long version), "Need Somebody", "Be My Lady", "Love Me In A Special Way" and "Queen Of My Heart". Rhythm Of The Night is the group's most polished and pop-oriented album to date – a move that pays off huge with unshakably insistent hooks – a nice piece of modern soul history. Includes "Who's Holding Donna Now" and "Rhythm Of The Night", plus "Single Heart", "You Wear It Well", 'The Walls Come Tumbling Down" and "Share My World". The bonus disc here is great – featuring long versions, rare M&M Mixes and instrumentals! 10 in all: "Rhythm Of The Night (Long Version)", "You Wear It Well (M&M Club Mix)", "The Heart Is Not So Smart" (M&M Club Mix)", "By My Lady (Instrumental)", "All This Love (Alternate Version)" and more. Maybe not the hypest record of the 80s, but a set that's pretty darn great overall – and which really helped find a way to reintroduce the vibe of the early street party scene back into the feel of hip hop on wax! Kid and Play aren't out to change the world with their politics or set a new agenda for the music – but working with great Herby Luv Bug production, they keep things nice and lively throughout – at a level that really fits with some of the best Select Records releases that made the world of hip hop pretty darn fresh at the time! The whole thing's an instant party throughout – with cuts that include "Brother Man Get Hip", "Soul Man", "Damn That DJ", "2Hype", "Can You Dig That", "Last Night", "Do The Kid N Play Kick Step", and the classic "Do This My Way" – a mini-production masterpiece on its own! ✨✧ Nils LofgrenNils Lofgren ... CD
A&M/Hip-O Select, 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
The wonderful first solo album from Nils Lofgren – done with this lean, tight sound that's nicely different than his previous work with Grin – and which really lets Nils show off all the best sides of his vocals and guitar! The group is just a core trio with Wornell Jones on bass (later of solo funk fame) and the great Aynsley Dunbar on drums – a player whose compact energy really brings a nice kick to the tunes, without ever overdoing things at all! Nils himself is stunningly charming on vocals – and also handles guitar, piano, and organ – as well as backup vocals, through the magic of overdub. In an era of rock overindulgence, the intimacy of the record is a really welcome change – although Lofrgren manages to come across with a real fullness too – almost like Todd Rundgren's self-created projects. Titles include "Keith Don't Go", "Back It Up", "One More Saturday Night", "Be Good Tonight", "Can't Buy A Break", "Duty", and "The Sun Hasn't Set On This Boy Yet". CD

Gordy/Hip-O Select, 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
A rare gem from Edwin Starr – quite different than any of his other work for Motown, and a sweet soul album that's been a favorite of ours for years! Although Edwin's always best known for the hard soul of hits like "War" or "25 Miles", this record takes off in a whole new direction – pairing Starr with the groovy (and little-known) female singer Blinky – in a set of duets that clearly take off from the Marvin Gaye female duet style of the 60s, but which also has a warmer 70s glow overall. Edwin and Blinky manage to hit a space that's much hipper than the area charted by Marvin and Tammi, and the record has kind of a cool sing-songy soul style, almost in the vein of Friends of Distinction at times. Production is by Frank Wilson, and titles include "Can't We Be Strangers Again", "I'll Understand", "Oh How Happy", and "I'm Glad You Belong To Me". CD

✨✧ James BrownSex Machine Today (limited numbered LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Polydor/Hip-O Select, 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great little album by The Godfather – one that takes the core James Brown sound of the "Sex Machine" generation, and serves it up with a tighter mid 70s twist! Fred Wesley is still very firmly at the helm of the band – and there's a power here that's equal to the later JBs work on the Breakin Bread album. The grooves are nicely free of the "fast funk" syndrome that crept into James' work a few years later as his answer to disco – and are super tight all the way through! The LP includes a 12 minute remake of "Sex Machine" that's worth the price alone – plus the funk cuts "Dead On It", "Problems", and "Deep In It". Nice stuff – and plenty of funkiness to go around! A strangely rootsy set from Buddy and Junior Wells, with the surprise addition of Junior Mance on piano – all recorded with a "live in studio" feel that's even sparer than some of the pair's other studio work! The tracks are done in very much the down-home electric mode that was still burning in the southside clubs of Chicago a few years before – and although the set was clearly recorded for the college crowd, it's a lot freer from hoke than you might expect! Tommy Boy/Chrysalis, 1991. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $26.99 34.99
If De La Soul took the world by storm with their groundbreaking debut, they definitely pushed hip hop even farther ahead with this killer second album – a record that refines all the best impulses of the first set, and has the trio coming across with an even greater command of the space of a full length set! After a decade or more where most hip hop albums were just a string of singles and other cuts, De La (along with Public Enemy and a select few others) really helped the medium move into the realm of the album – weaving together cuts that are killer enough to be singles with all sorts of skits and album tracks, all with a vibe that has the whole thing flowing together wonderfully! The humor and wit of the group in their youth is still very much on point, as is the production work of Prince Paul – and the album bubbles over with longform imagination and careful execution that many groups could still hope to match! The samples are superb, nice and funky – and titles include "Oodles Of O's", "Talkin Bout Hey Love", "A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays", "Millie Pulled A Pistol On Santa", "Ring Ring Ring", "Keepin The Faith", "Bitties In The BK Lounge", "Pass The Plugs", "Pease Porridge", and "Fanatic Of The B Word". Jazzman (UK), 2012. New Copy ... $22.99 24.99
Amazing sounds from this very hip group – a contemporary combo, but one who play with a depth of sound to warrant their inclusion on the Jazzman label! The style is almost spiritual jazz, but a bit more laidback too – sounds that are cosmic, yet never soaring to the skies – and almost more content to contemplate their own existence in these cool little rhythmic progressions – a very hip approach that draws a lot of power from its minimalism! Instrumentation is a bit trippy at points – but mostly in the way the players fold things together – so that tinkling piano tipples over brooding basslines, or organ lines hum softly to encourage string sounds to start too – a beautifully poetic style that only gets better as the album moves along! Titles include "Cast Adrift", "For A Breath I Tarry", "Have Spacesuit Will Travel (part 2)", "Clear Skies Select Stick", "Girl & Robot With Flowers (part 6)", and "Girl & Robot With Flowers (part 4)". Vanguard/Craft, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 28.99
A fantastic 60s album from Skip James – one that's billed as "Today", circa 1966 – but which has James very much back in the same stripped-down style as when he first recorded for Paramount Records back in the 30s! There's no other instrumentation apart from Skip's acoustic guitar – or piano on a few select tracks – and really, the one "today" factor that does stand out is the excellent recording quality, which makes the great vocals of James really sparkle with more sensitivity and charm than they might in a 78rpm setting. Titles include "All Night Long", "Crow Jane", "Drunken Spree", "Cherryball", "Washington DC Hospital Center Blues", "Cypress Grove", "Hard Time Killing Floor Blues", and "My Gal". Van Dyke ParksArrangements Vol 1 (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Warner/Bananastan, Late 60s/1970s. Used Gatefold ... $11.99
The Van Dyke Parks collection we've been wanting to see for years – one that brings together all the cool and groovy arrangements he's done for other folks, plus some rare tracks of his own as well! If you only know Parks' albums, you're only getting the tip of the iceberg – because Van Dyke did so much wonderful music that ended up in odd sources in the 60s and 70s – obscure singles, overlooked album cuts, and marvelous nuggets that often got buried on records that didn't always hit the mainstream – but which were years ahead of their time! Van Dyke had a great hand in putting this set together, and honestly it's kind of like his "great lost album" – an uttering from those sublime years of the Warner Brothers label at the end of the 60s and start of the 70s – when Parks and a select group of hipsters really had free reign to mess around in the studio. Titles include "Farther Along", "Ice Capades (moog music 67)", "Come To The Sunshine", "Out On The Rolling Sea", and "The Eagle & Me" by Van Dyke Parks – plus "Alligator Man" by Sal Valentin, "Wha She Go Do" by Bonnie Raitt, "Sit Down I Think I Love You" by The Mojo Men, "One Meatball" by Ry Cooder, "Cheek To Cheek" by Lowell George, "Sitting Here In Limbo" by Dino Martin, "Donovan's Colours" by George Washington Brown, and "Valley To Pray" by Arlo Guthrie. ✨✧ De La SoulDe La Soul Is Dead ... CD
Tommy Boy, 1991. Used ... Out Of Stock
A perfect pairing of Candi Staton and producer Dave Crawford – that key southern soul talent who helped Candi and a few select others really step into the American soul mainstream at the end of the 70s! Candi's still got all the deep roots in her vocals – including that incredible range that's continued to thrive in gospel in recent years – but Dave helps push things into a modern soul style that works equally well on Northern dancefloors as it would in the clubs down south. Arrangements are perfectly balanced – sophisticated and adult, but never too smooth or commercial – thanks mostly to Candi's wonderful handling of the lyrics. ✨✧ VariousMemphis 70 – The City's Funk & Soul In The Decade After Otis 1968 to 1977 ... CD
BGP (UK), Late 60s/1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A mind-expanding look at Memphis soul – one that gets way past common cliches about the city and its music! There's a heavy dose of funk in the mix on most numbers here – a gritty, fuzzy approach to the music that seems slightly borrowed from the Detroit scene at the end of the 60s – then mixed with some rougher, rootsier southern soul styles too! But other tracks take on a more sophisticated sound too – some of the righteous elements that hit Stax in the post-1968 period, especially as Isaac Hayes and David Porter were working on their own great solo work. Yet unlike Hayes and Porter, most of the artists here are much lesser-known – singers and groups who never charted big, but who got the chance to record for Memphis labels like XL, Stax, Select-O-Hits, and Sounds Of Memphis. CD features 20 tracks in all – and titles include "Dig It" by The Optimistics, "Mississippi Mud" by Smithsonian, "Two Paces Ahead Of Love" by Willie Walker, "Pullin" by The Minits, "It's Bump Time" by Gene Bowlegs Miller, "Blackrock Yeah Yeah" by Blackrock, "Keep The Faith" by Mel & Tim, "Watch Dog (alt)" by Barbara & The Browns, "Come What May" by John Gary Williams, "Strange Things" by Art Jerry Miller, "Shake" by The Ovations, "Tip Toeing" by Alvin Cash, "The Way Of Me" by Hannon, "Take A Giant Step" by LaCleve Milon, "Papa Killed A Chicken" by Willie Toliver, and "Don't Boom Boom" by Lillian Hale. A really great album from Chris Connor – and very different than most of her other work of the 60s! The album's got a light bossa feel, as you'd guess from the title – an approach that works wonderfully with Connor's vocals, and helps push her into territory that's plenty fresh, and pretty darn groovy too! The great Pat Williams handled the arrangements – in that lightly dancing mode that he used for his work on Verve, and select soundtracks too – a blend of jazz and larger orchestrations that's mighty nice, and every bit as captivating as the vocals from Chris. Titles include the great Steve & Eydie cut "Can't Get Over the Bossa Nova" – plus "A Quiet Thing", "Taste Of Honey", "Feeling Good", "Baby The Rain Must Fall", and "Stranger On The Shore". A huge shift in sound for Aphex Twin – a sprawling, extended set that's every bit as ambient as you might expect from the title – but which also has some of the currents that you'd know from the previous records too! There's a different approach to ambient than both the Brian Eno and Japanese minimalist generation – as Aphex Twin lives in a world of more beats and sonic elements, but strips them all away here, taking the music down to its core – almost referencing earlier experiments in electronic music, but with a much more tuneful, melodic quality too – all at a level that makes the record a key bridge between different scenes and generations, and a surprisingly lasting classic too! Some of the sharpest, jazziest funk you'll ever hope to hear – a smoking collection of the legendary 70s work by The Blackbyrds on Fantasy Records! The group started as a jazz combo under Donald Byrd's supervision – right at a time when Byrd was making his own fantastic funky records in the 70s – but working for the Bay Area Fantasy label, they really took off into an amazing groove that was all their own – still informed by jazz, but free to open up to lots of funk and soul elements too – sometimes with vocals in the lead, sometimes more focus on the kinds of solos that always set them apart from all their contemporaries! The cuts have some wonderful keyboard work from a young Kevin Toney – who's gone onto a lot of fame over the years – and production on all cuts is either by Larry Mizell, Donald Byrd, or George Duke – key 70s jazz funk forces who keep things mighty tight in the studio! The initial tracks hare showcase the approaches used during the non-electric years – very bold, sharp lines that often have a nice punch at the core, and which often make use of banjo to strut along the rhythm – but with a very different feel in these larger ensemble tracks than you'd hear in a small New Orleans combo. That instrument persists at the core of most tracks, even as the horn sections grow over the years of the recordings – all Victor sessions, mostly done in New York – presented here with great sound restoration, but in a way that doesn't drain the energy you'd get from a 78rpm disc – in a whopping selection of 25 tracks in all! Robert Wyatt & Alfie BengeSide By Side – Selected Lyrics (hardcover) ... Book
Faber & Faber (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $4.99 19.95
The music of Robert Wyatt often comes across with a surprisingly poetic quality – one that finally gets its due here in a well-presented book that mixes words from his songs with images and other writings – most done in collaboration with Wyatt's longtime creative partner Alfie Benge! The book's got much of the appeal of Robert Wyatt album covers and CD booklets over the past few decades – many of which have Benge's contributions too – and the artwork is just in just the right balance next to the words, which are further illuminated by some non-lyrical passages that are a great addition to the book. Hardcover volume is 191 pages, with black and white images scattered throughout! Book

BBE (UK), 2018. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $22.99 27.99
Alex Attias has always given us some really creative sounds in his own music – so we've got some mighty high expectations when he brings together a selection of tracks by other artists for BBE! Fortunately, the record not only lives up to those expectations, but does them one better – by opening us up to some overlooked contemporary cuts that all have the cosmic touches of Attias' work on the London scene – then interweaving them with some older tracks that resonate even more strongly in the territory! There's some wonderful work from recent years that show just how far the best side of the broken beat legacy has evolved – and other older cuts have a cosmic vibe that's plenty righteous too, with some great jazzy currents that really deepen the vibe of the collection. Titles include "Midnight Magic" by Cro Magnon with Roy Ayers, "My Dream Came True" by Root Soul, "Cascade" by Tatham Mensah Lord & Ranks, "Do The Dance" by Grooveman Spot, "Over & Over" by Material with Nona Hendryx, "Curiosity (Zanzibar rmx)" by Nicole Willis, and "It's You (disco alert mix)" by Sunaga T Experience. VariousBosporus Bridges – A Wide Selection Of Turkish Jazz & Funk 1968 to 1978 ... LP
Twimo/Life Goes On (Italy), Late 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... $22.99 26.99 About February 21, 2025
Heavy funk from 70s Turkey – proof that the world of the groove knew no boundaries at the time! The tunes here are all pretty heavily influenced by American funk and jazz of the period – awash in heavy beats, tight riffing, and wicked instrumentation that's often produced with a nice gritty edge that really matches the intensity of some of the best funky 45s! But the work also features a fair bit of Eastern influences as well – either in use of specific instruments, sounds, and phrasing – or the occasional Turkish vocals which really help freshen the groove. Side one is all funk – and very dirty, nasty, and with beats a lot heavier than you'd expect – and side two is jazz, but not your usual Anglo jazz from the time – and more in the world/jazz crossover style explored by labels like MPS! The whole thing's totally great – a record you'll proudly stack next to your best Mulatu albums, but which will take you even further! Titles include "Hilal" by Durul Gence 10, "Senlik" by Erol Peckan, "Cecen Kizi" by Emin Findikoglu, "Sevemek Istiyorum" by Erkut Tackin, "Karli Daglar" by Erkin Koray, "Aybatti (edit)" by Fikret Kizilok, "Dolana Dolana" by Mustafa Okzent Ve Orkestrasi, "Bermuda Seytan Ucgeni" by Aksu Orkestrasi, and "Kopruden Gecti Gelin" by Ferdi Ozbegen. Trojan/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. Used ... $14.99 19.99
The soulful sound of Trojan Records, mixed superbly here by Japanese DJ Holiday – who comes across with a killer blend of cuts from the rocksteady and early reggae years! A number of tracks here are Jamaican remakes of American soul tunes, and they're mixed with originals that really echo the spirit of mellow grooves that were especially strong in the early part of the 70s – served up here on a set of 20 tracks that are all pulled from the farther reaches of the Trojan catalog, including a fair bit of under-discovered nuggets! Titles include "Let's Get It On" by Lloyd Charmers, "Lean On Me" by BB Seaton, "Tears On My Pillow" by Derrick Morgan, "It's You I Love" by Merlene Webster, "Somebody's Baby" by Pat Kelly, "Pain In My Heart" by Derrick & Naomi, "Target" by The Gaytones, "Love Letters" by Phyllis Dillon & Alton Ellis, "Sitting In The Park" by Slim Smith, "Keep It Like It Is" by Louisa Marks, "Emergency Call" by Judy Mowatt, and "Our Day Will Come" by The Heptones. Favorite (France), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $25.99 32.99
That's a mighty sexy cover on the front – and the grooves inside definitely have the flavor to match! The work here is from the obscure French disco underground – a European scene that never got the same exposure as German or Italian work for clubs – which makes the whole package a really great discovery in sound! The music is surprisingly fresh, and often quite funky too – and done in modes that are arguably warmer and more soulful than most other European disco – and often a lot like the best American underground club of the period. Some tracks have breathy female vocals, while others have bolder lyrics that almost echo some of the global musical crossovers happing in 70s Paris and a few of the later tracks bring in electro elements, but in a subtle way we totally love. The collection's a follow-up to the Brazilian Disco Boogie Sounds compilation – and like that one, it's really a cut above the usual! Titles include "Super Star" by Contessa, "Lady Jones" by Over Drive, "Music Madness (ext Charles Maurice version)" by Beckie Bell, "Y'A Du Blues" by Marche Noire, "Un Fait Divers & Rien De Plus (re-remix)" by Le Club, "Pour Moi Ca Va (Charles Maurice version)" by France Lise, "Polar (Charles Maurice version)" by Bernard Guyvan, and "Minuit L'Heure Du Swing" by Didier Makaga. A sweet set of grooves from around the globe – all the sorts of tracks that Guts plays in his legendary DJ sets overseas – music that's got a much more far-reaching vibe than some of the tracks he issues under his own name! Overall, the set's very much in the best spirit of the Heavenly Sweetness label – especially in the way that company brings together music from so many different times and scenes around the planet – music that's taken even further here in the rich array of tunes that Guts serves up! A number of tracks are contemporary, but there's definitely some classic global flavors going on too – and titles include "Saude" by Pupulies & Rebecca, "Aye" by Ngalah Oreyo", "Canette (Bosq rmx)" by Pat Kalla & Le Super Mojo, "Utammada" by Ismail & Sixu Toure, "Nzambi/Muadiakime" by Alcione, "Aye" by Ngalah Oreyo, "Pe Di Bissilon (Dam Swindle rmx)" by Bande Gamboa, "Mi Moin Mi Ou" by Jobby Valente, "Cumbia De Sal Y Azucar" by Chucho Pinto Y Sus Kassino, "Limye" by Violaaa, and "Yamona (Dam Swindle rmx)" by Pat Thomas & Kwashibu Area Band. We Want Sounds (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $36.99 39.99
Beautiful grooves from the Japanese scene – most of them from a time when its singers and musicians were leaning heavily on influences from American funk and soul, and turning out some wonderful music of their own! Lyrics on most tracks are in Japanese, but there's a really universal vibe to the grooves – great basslines, warm keyboards, and lots of jazzy touches in the instrumentation – a soulful, often funky approach that gives the collection an appeal that goes way beyond the boundaries of language! These aren't the mellow, electronic, or offbeat Japanese tracks of the 80s – and instead, the work here is overflowing with soul - on titles that include "Simple Another Love" by Jadoes, "Kimagure" by Kumi Nakamura, "Natsu No Hikari Ni" by Sumiko Yamagata, "Party Is Over" by Hatsumi Shibata, "Moonlight Flight" by Makoto Iwabuchi, "Paradise's Dream" by Arakawa Band, "I Wander All Alone (part 3)" by New Genration Company, "Sofa Bed Blues" by Haruo Chikada & Vibratones, "Tuxedo Connection" by Hitomi Penny Tohyama, and "Chigasaki Memory" by Mitsuko Horie. Teensville, Mid 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful batch of prime quality, but quite obscure girl group singles – 45s cut for the majors and larger indies in the mid 60s – but didn't break out in a big way, despite being just as lovely and catchy as the big hits of the day! This is the second volume in what we hope will be a long series, and it's got a few names that'll be recognizable to diggers of rare rock, pop and soul – but the material has for the most part been buried for way too long. Beautiful stuff! Habibi Funk (Germany), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A second amazing collection of rare funk tracks from the Mid East – work that didn't exist in the same "scene"-styled world as American funk, but which instead comes from a disparate group of recordings that surprisingly, amazingly, turned out to be pretty darn funky! Musical modes differ throughout the tracks in a really nice way – but most of the tunes are unified through strong use of electric bass and heavy percussion – mixed up from number to number, in a way that opens the door to a stunning world of musical exploration we never would have experienced otherwise! We've really grown to love the Habibi Funk label in recent years – and although other records have been great, this set may well be their crowning achievement. Blank Forms, 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Some of the coolest use of electric harpsichord you'll ever hope to hear – additional tracks from the minimalist masterpiece recorded by Catherine Christer Hennix – sounds that were performed live in Stockholm in 1976, using an oddly-tuned version of the instrument with very cool effects and tape-delay! The music has a dense, textural quality – maybe very much in territory that William Basinski would later explore – with a way of taking earlier minimalist experiments by Terry Riley and Steve Reich, and bringing them down into these rich, organic sound progressions that are almost non-musical, but still very tuneful overall. The sounds within were only recently discovered, and appear here for the first time ever. LP, Vinyl record album

Tramp (Germany), 2009. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The coolest collection of modern funk we've ever seen – and one that goes way beyond the familiar names of the genre that sometimes show up too much on other compilations! This one really digs deep – and the tunes are often as rough and raw as the music of the 60s and 70s that inspired them – a true treasure trove of work from the contemporary deep funk underground, but mostly music that's not been in wide circulation around the globe. We've always trusted Tramp for their funky 45s – but we love them even more for making a record like this – really blowing our minds with a range of hard-hitting tracks that show us we still have plenty to learn about what's going on out there in the funky hinterland. Titles include "Izzy Come Izzy Go" by The Funk Revolution, "One Man Song" by The Qualitons, "Go Go Train" by Big Joe Louis & The Soul Igs, "Chicken Lickin" by The Fantastics, "Fallin In Debt" by DeRobert & The Half-Truths, "Stop The Madness" by Tynnes Well & The Magic Fountains, "Humpin" by The Unstoppable S Robinson & His Marvelaires, "Brasil No 7" by Ben Martin Trio, "Soul Pop" by Mauri Bailey, and "Hakusha" by The Neapolitans. Luv N' Haight, 1970s/1980s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A celebration of 20 years of Groove Merchant, the haven for disco, funk & soul records on Haight St, in San Francisco – also the birthplace of Luv N' Haight & Ubiquity Records! As an anniversary compilation, it's would be appropriate for Luv N' Haight/Ubiquity to make sure that this is one of the best comps they've ever put together – a difficult task, given that these are the folks behind the great Bay Area Funk, California Soul and other great releases – but they pulled it off! The selection of tunes is diverse, yet oddly connective in a soulful, adventurous spirit – whether it's sun-toasted or spacey keyboard-inflected soul, laidback or harder charging funk, groovy psychedelic folk, or rare disco. A very nicely chosen 14 tracks includes "Crystals" by Ron Forella", "You Lied" by Numonics, "Sunlit Horizon" by April Fulladosa, "Stump" by September, "Be Mine" by Lola Johnson, "Date With With Rain" by Frankie Gee, ""Who Is Your Friend" by Soul Liberation, "Get Up And Dance" by Arthur Foy, "Nick Danger" by "Pataphysics" and more. Get ready to have your mind completely blown – because this compilation is one of those completely rare ear-opening experiences that will let you know that there's a hell of a lot of music in the world that you've never heard before – even if, like us, you've heard plenty of funky music over the years! The grooves here definitely live up to the title – as they're completely funky throughout, and in ways that are plenty appealing to fans of Anglo funk, but which have all the Mideast touches you'd expect in the instrumentation – a mad mix of east and west, sacred and secular, with the kind of completely unique vibe that will grab you like the first time you heard Ethiopian soul or Turkish rock! We'd honestly never heard most of this music before – and even though we've dug previous releases on the Habibi Funk label, this namesake set is the moment when they really knock it out of the park, and let us know that they're on to something completely brilliant. Comes with a great set of note, which help the uninitiated like us – and titles include "Casablanca Shuffle" by Belbao, "Wang Dang" by Bob Destiny, "Bsslama Hbibti" by Fadoul, "Sah" by Al Massrieen, "Soul Brother" by Dalton, "Al Asafir" by Kamal Keila, "Rouhi Ya Hafida" by Mallek Mohamed, "La Coladera" by Freh Khodja, "Tape 19.11" by Ahmed Malek, "Ayonha" by Hamid El Shaeri, and "Games" by Samir & Abboud. A really wonderful collection from a time when the Italian scene was really on fire – getting past some of the more standard modes of Italo Disco of the 80s, and really stepping forward with some of the most soulful, uplifting sounds of house music! Given the way the earlier Italian work influenced the grooves in Chicago and New York clubs, the cultural exchange makes even more sense going the other way around – and the well-chosen cuts on this set represent the cream of the crop from this moment – really well-conceived, well-produced cuts that have a surprisingly soulful vibe throughout.
