James BrownJames Brown Singles Vol 5 – 1967 to 1969 ... CD
King/Hip-O Select, Late 60s. Used 2CD ... $39.99
An explosion of funk from the mighty James Brown – some of the hardest-hitting singles James cut during his 60s run at King Records – served up here in a massive 2CD set! This essential fifth volume in the Singles series covers the key years of 1967 to 1969 – a pre-Polydor point when James was really letting loose with his late 60s band – inventing and re-inventing new grooves nearly every time they stepped into the studio, then releasing their brilliance in an all-great stream of singles that set a whole new standard for the funky 45! The cuts here are all tremendous – and run the gamut from instrumental groovers to hard soul belters – almost all uptempo, choppy, and with that wicked sort of groove that's the best sort of vibe we associate with James all these many years later. The 43 track set features a and b-side recordings from all Brown's singles from late 1967 through early 1969 – then offers up full session details on the material too – really essential notes if you've only ever enjoyed these gems as vinyl 45s. Tracks include "Funky Soul #1", "Soul Of JB", "There Was A Time", "Maybe Good Maybe Bad (parts 1 & 2)", "Say It Loud I'm Black & I'm Proud (parts 1 & 2)", "In The Middle (parts 1 & 2)", "You Know It", "Tit For Tat, "Shades Of Brown (parts 1 & 2)", "Soul Pride (parts 1 & 2)", "I'll Lose My Mind", "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose", "Here I Go", "Licking Stick (parts 1 & 2)", "Gittin A Little Hipper", "Bringing Up The Guitar", "Believers Shall Enjoy", "Come On In The House", and "You Got To Have A Job". ✨✧ SyreetaSyreeta/Stevie Wonder Presents Syreeta (limited numbered edition) ... CD
Motown/Hip-O Select, 1972/1974. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first 2 Motown albums by the lovely Syreeta – both of them recorded under the supervision of her partner Stevie Wonder! The genius of these records is hard to describe accurately – a sort of spacey soul approach that builds on the work of Stevie at the time, but which also has traces of Minnie Riperton – and it's own sort of fragile, gentle, groove. The Syreeta album is very spare – often just featuring bits of electronics and percussion next to Syreeta's pure and honest vocals – and while the Stevie Wonder Presents album works in slightly fuller arrangements, the sound is still nicely stripped-down overall – very unique for the time, not only for Motown, but for all of mainstream soul as well! Cosmic righteousness abounds, and the 20 track CD is a delight throughout! Titles include "I Love Every Little Thing About You", "Black Maybe", "Keep Him Like He Is", "What Love Has Joined Together", "She's Leaving Home", "I'm Goin Left", "Waitin For The Postman", "Cause We've Ended As Lovers", and "Come & Get This Stuff". CD

✨✧ Marvin GayeHere, My Dear (expanded 2CD edition) ... CD
Motown/Hip-O Select, 1978. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful stuff – and one of our favorite-ever Marvin Gaye albums! This is the legendary two-record set that Marvin wrote and recorded as an alimony payment to his ex-wife Anna Gordy (the story's pretty long, and we won't get into it here – suffice it to say that when stars get a divorce, watch out!) Although the album was thought of as a no-brainer quickie at the time – and predicted to fail so that Anna wouldn't get any cash from it – the record is an extremely well-crafted one, filled with extremely personal songs that also have a warm soulful finish, in the style of Marvin's work on the LP I Want You (which is kind of a nice bookend to this one – as it was an extended love poem to the young girlfriend that caused him to split up with Anna!) Hard and soulful, the record's a searing testimony to the relationship between Marvin and Anna, and a painful document of the troubles between them – set to some mellow grooves that are easily some of Marvin's greatest of the 70s! The set's filled with great "lost" Marvin Gay songs, too – like "Sparrow", "When Did You Stop Loving Me", "Anger", "You Can Leave, But It's Going To Cost You", and "Time to Get it Together". Expanded CD features the famous 12" instrumental version of "A Funky Space Reincarnation" – plus a full set of 12 bonus alternate mixes produced by the likes of Mocean Worker, Easy Mo Bee, Leon Ware, Marcus Miller, Prince Paul, Bootsy Collins, Slaam Remi, and The Randy Watson Experience – including "Anger (alt extended)", "Here My Dear (alt mix)", "Time To Get It Together (alt extended mix)", "Falling In Love Again (alt version)", "I Met A Little Girl (alt version)", "Sparrow (alt version)", and "Anna's Song (inst – alt version)". NNA, 2021. New Copy 2LP ... $23.99 24.99
A stunningly beautiful project from JJJJJerome Ellis – one that deals with dysfluency in speech, but delivers the message in a mix of instrumental and vocal modes! Ellis himself suffers from a block stutter – but rather than see that condition as a disability he presents it as a whole new way of expression – echoed here in a mixture of work on tenor, flute, piano, electronics, and even hammered dulcimer – served up in very evocative currents of sound that move in select modes of progression. The project is done in conjunction with a book that Ellis released – and titles include "The Bookseller", "Stepney", "Loops Of Retreat", "Dysfluent Waters", "Small Baptism", "Milita", and "Brush Fire Smoke". Heavy grooves from Suff Daddy – but augmented with lots of great guest work too – the kind of collaborative effort that always seems to stem from his great inspiration in the studio! Core grooves are nicely diverse – and filled with funky stuff that draws heavily from 60s and 70s roots – especially on the keyboards, which seem even more magical this time around – and range from piano to Hammond to moog, and more! Guests include Miles Bonny, Flat Pocket, Hulk Hodn, Phat Kat, Vertual Vertigo, and Fleur Earth – and titles include "Jimmy Smith Interlude", "KC Vodka", "Dexter Wansel Interlude", "Det2bin", "Gimlet, "Elephant", "Bo Break", "Cold Lampin", and "Pattern Select". Chester ThompsonPowerhouse ... CD
Black Jazz/P-Vine (Japan), 1971. Used ... $34.99
One of the few solo albums ever cut by organist Chester Thompson – a player who's known to most as the keyboardist in Tower Of Power, but one who's also remembered by a select funky few for this killer record for the Black Jazz label! The album's a stripped-down quartet session – with labelmate Rudolph Johnson on tenor, blowing some beautiful lines alongside long, drawn-out Hammond solos from Thompson! The overall feel is similar to some of the great late 60s Prestige sessions – especially Don Patterson dates – with the group free swinging away in a very live format, just like you might have heard if you caught them in some hip southside club. Other players include Al Hall Jr on trombone and Ray Pounds on drums – and the album features four long jamming tracks, with titles that include "Mr T", "Trip One", "Weird Harold", and "Powerhouse". VariousGodfather's R&B – James Brown's Productions 1962 to 1967 ... CD
Smash/BGP (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A host of wonderful work produced by James Brown – most of it by a range of different singers, and one by The Godfather himself! The collection brings together some of the earliest James Brown productions – mid 60s tracks recorded for King and Smash Records, most of which aren't nearly as well known as later JB productions for the People and Polydor labels! As with that later work, all the grooves here are right in the same territory that James was hitting himself – upbeat, funky, and stone out of sight soul – all with plenty of rough edges, and backings from the same tight core of musicians that were helping out Brown on his recordings. The package is a real treasure – and is a great complement to the James Brown Singles collections from the Hip-O Select label – proof that even in these early days, James was clearly the hardest working man in show business – given all his time in the studio with other artists! 22 tracks in all – including "I Found Out" and "I'll Keep Pressing On" by Bobby Byrd, "That's When I Cry" and "If You Don't Think" by Anna King, "I Don't Care" and "Unexplainable" by Dizzy Jones, "Got No Excuse" and "If You Don't Work You Can't Eat" by James Crawford, "Do You Really Want To Rescue Me (part 1)" by Elsie Mae, "Lookie Lookie Lookie" by The Jewells, "Wide Awake In A Dream" and "Nobody Cares" by Vicki Anderson, "Devil's Den" by The Poets, "It Hurts To Be In Love" by Yvonne Fair, "That's The Spirit" by Rev Willingham, "Faith" by The Five Royales, "I Cried" by Tammy Montgomery, "Soul Food (parts 1 & 2)" by Al Brisco Clark, and "New Breed (The Boo Ga Loo) (part 1)" by James Brown. Ace (UK), Late 50s/1960s/1970s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Lightning strikes more than once when it comes to the magic of rock and roll – but it leaves behind a different sort of spark every single time – as you'll hear in this collection of work put together by Lenny Kaye, who associates key scenes and key moments that helped the music surge forward over the decades! Kaye picks select cuts from Memphis, San Francisco, Detroit, and other cities – and serves up a massive double-length package of tracks that step easily between genres, and which provide the perfect playlist to his well-penned volume of the same name. Given that Lenny was the guy to give us the legendary Nuggets series back in the day, it's clear he definitely knows what he's talking about – and you'll certainly feel that way after reading the very detailed notes in the set! 48 tracks in all – with titles that include "I'm So Happy" by Danny Cobb, "Marcella" by The Castelles, "Tiger" by Fabian, "Stupidity" by The Undertakers, "Pride Of Man (demo)" by Quicksilver Messenger Service, "Coo Coo" by Big Brother & The Holding Company, Crazy Like A Fox" by Link Cromwellchs, "Looking At You" by MC5, "Cavern Stomp" by The Big Three, "I Hear A New World" by Joe Meek, "Once I Had A Love (1975 version)" by Blondie, "Down At The Rock & Roll Club (alt)" by Richard Hell & The Voidoids, "Leavin Here (version 1)" by The Rationals, and "Gimme Chocolate" by Baby Metal. ✨✧ VariousMemphis 70 – The City's Funk & Soul In The Decade After Otis 1968 to 1977 ... CD
BGP (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A mind-expanding look at Memphis soul – one that gets way past common cliches about the city and its music! There's a heavy dose of funk in the mix on most numbers here – a gritty, fuzzy approach to the music that seems slightly borrowed from the Detroit scene at the end of the 60s – then mixed with some rougher, rootsier southern soul styles too! But other tracks take on a more sophisticated sound too – some of the righteous elements that hit Stax in the post-1968 period, especially as Isaac Hayes and David Porter were working on their own great solo work. Yet unlike Hayes and Porter, most of the artists here are much lesser-known – singers and groups who never charted big, but who got the chance to record for Memphis labels like XL, Stax, Select-O-Hits, and Sounds Of Memphis. CD features 20 tracks in all – and titles include "Dig It" by The Optimistics, "Mississippi Mud" by Smithsonian, "Two Paces Ahead Of Love" by Willie Walker, "Pullin" by The Minits, "It's Bump Time" by Gene Bowlegs Miller, "Blackrock Yeah Yeah" by Blackrock, "Keep The Faith" by Mel & Tim, "Watch Dog (alt)" by Barbara & The Browns, "Come What May" by John Gary Williams, "Strange Things" by Art Jerry Miller, "Shake" by The Ovations, "Tip Toeing" by Alvin Cash, "The Way Of Me" by Hannon, "Take A Giant Step" by LaCleve Milon, "Papa Killed A Chicken" by Willie Toliver, and "Don't Boom Boom" by Lillian Hale. Dieter Bihlmaier SelectionSWF Session 1973 ... CD
Long Hair (Germany), 1973. New Copy ... $16.99 22.99
Dieter Bihlmaier is a hell of a flute player – and he blows his instrument here in a freewheeling trio date from the early 70s – very much in the kind of mode you'd expect from a trio player at the time! The recording just features bass and drums – by Jan Jankeje and Gerhart Ziegler, respectively – and the tunes are long, jamming, and pretty frenzied – far-out, but never totally free-jazz – as there's more of a proggish approach overall, one that has Dieter using the flute to create some wonderfully sensitive, soulful sounds from time to time – before then stepping out and blowing his top again! Pretty darn amazing – not like any recording of its type from the US scene of the time – with titles that include "Ovation", "Roulette", "Arco Oriental", "Free & Romantic", and "Gertuschka". CD

Late work from Italian sound library giant Sandro Brugnolini, but great work too – a set that shifts a bit in the styles of instrumentation used, but which follows lots of the same dark passages that Sandro explored in the 70s! The keyboards and electronics are more digital than analog, but never have that cheesy, tinny sound of mainstream work from the time – proof that Brugnolini is a real master of sound, with an ear tuned towards bringing out the richest possibilities from his instruments! A few titles have a more mainstream soundtrack vibe, while others are in a more atonal mode – and titles include "Vapor Killer", "Barbarel", "Omen Nemo", "I Remember Sax", "Young Clan", "Baby Gang", and a number of titles dedicated to the Russian painter, variations on "Kandinsky". Z Records (UK), 2000s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
A stunning selection of the sorts of music that really set the London scene on fire at the start of the century – the new wave of broken beat artists who sprung up in the wake of jungle – a whole new generation of producers and performers that really reinvented the sound of the dancefloor for the 21st Century! Yet despite a new ear for rhythm, there's also a strong love of older elements too – a real respect for jazz, sophisticated instrumentation, and fuller, more soulful production than the previous generation – all of which makes these tunes really awash in color, soul, and life! The artists here aren't just British, and include some global talents who were really inspired by the sound going down in the UK – and together, the collection is a wonderful overview of this really magical time – when it seemed like mindblowing music was coming out every single week, and we were ultra-proud to be stocking contemporary cuts like this. 2CD set features 22 tracks in all – and titles include "DJ Power" by NSM, "Save It" by Domu with Face, "Samurai" by Jazztronik, "Organic Juggernaut" by Kaidi Tatham, "Manhood" by Victor Duplaix, "Feed The Cat" by Agent K, "Take Me To Your Sky" by Fourth Kind, "Broken Vibes" by Taylor McFerrin with Vincent Parker, "Hold It Down (Bugz In The Attic's co-operative mix)" by 4Hero, "Baila Conmigo (AtJazz rmx)" by Nova Fronteira, "Afrospace" by Blakai with Bembe Segue, and "Hands" by Agent K. Get ready to have your mind completely blown – because this compilation is one of those completely rare ear-opening experiences that will let you know that there's a hell of a lot of music in the world that you've never heard before – even if, like us, you've heard plenty of funky music over the years! The grooves here definitely live up to the title – as they're completely funky throughout, and in ways that are plenty appealing to fans of Anglo funk, but which have all the Mideast touches you'd expect in the instrumentation – a mad mix of east and west, sacred and secular, with the kind of completely unique vibe that will grab you like the first time you heard Ethiopian soul or Turkish rock! We'd honestly never heard most of this music before – and even though we've dug previous releases on the Habibi Funk label, this namesake set is the moment when they really knock it out of the park, and let us know that they're on to something completely brilliant. Habibi Funk (Germany), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $15.99 17.98
A second amazing collection of rare funk tracks from the Mid East – work that didn't exist in the same "scene"-styled world as American funk, but which instead comes from a disparate group of recordings that surprisingly, amazingly, turned out to be pretty darn funky! Musical modes differ throughout the tracks in a really nice way – but most of the tunes are unified through strong use of electric bass and heavy percussion – mixed up from number to number, in a way that opens the door to a stunning world of musical exploration we never would have experienced otherwise! We've really grown to love the Habibi Funk label in recent years – and although other records have been great, this set may well be their crowning achievement. Titles include "Sultan Qaboos Song" by Sal Davis, "Ahlo Jedba" by Fadou, "Music De Carneval" by Magdy El Hussainy, "Badala Zamana" by Zohra, "Casba" by Ahmed Male, "El Fen" by Ait Meslayene, "Haditouni" by Douaa, "Tendme" by Ibrahim Hesnawi, and "Reet" by Hamid El Shaeri. VariousHouse Of Ages – Classic, Rare, & Unreleased Dance Music – Selected By Jeremy Newall ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99
Not really the house of ages – given that most of these cuts are so rare, they're only making their first appearance here – but a great little collection that reminds us that there's still so much to discover in the funky underground of the last few years of the 20th Century! Jeremy Newell really knocks it out of the park with this one – and comes up with a deep, soulful collection of house tracks from the farthest reaches of the scene – either work that only appeared on very obscure singles, or didn't even make it past tape back in the day – leaping forth here with a wickedly groovy sound that's more than worth the wait. Titles include "Take Me Higher" by Jimi Polo, "I Promise (more beats for passion mix)" by Mark Rogers, "Keep On Pressing (KOT orig mix)" by Sean Grant, "More I Get" by Teleport feat Russell Patterson, "Yo Razor" by Arts & Craft with Razor Cain, "Don't Run Away" by Soul Dhamma, "When I See You (tight voc)" by Frank Youngwerth with Ernie, "Freak It (Tony Humprhies inst mix)" by Johanna, "Mainline (Roger S Ego trip mix)" by Tribal House, "We Can Make It (unreleased dub)" by UBQ Project, and "Deeper (Benji Candelario's deeper than deep unreleased mix)" by Susan Clark. Pride/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Early 70s. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99 About February 1, 2022
Fantastic funk from a legendary label – even if it was just sort of an offshoot imprint at the time! Pride issued a handful of albums back in the early 70s, most in partnership with MGM – but nearly every one of the company's records is a well-remembered gem with funk collectors all these many years later – as Pride had a great way of keeping the grooves sharp, even when the tunes had sweeter vocals over the top! This 20 track set is a fantastic selection of tunes from the short years of Pride – both vocal and instrumental numbers, with titles that include "I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More Baby" by Jimmy Smith, "Kiburi (part 1)" by Incredible Bongo Band, "Misdemeanor" by Foster Sylvers, "Melinda Latino" by Jerry Butler, "If You Can't Satisfy" by Hetti Lloyd, "Fool's Paradise" by The Sylvers, "Simple Things" by Lady Lee, "Why Can't We Live Together" by Jimmy Smith, "Only One Can Win" by The Sylvers, "Whatever's Fair" by Billy Butler & Infinity, "Part 3" by Jerry Butler & Jerry Peters, "Grief Sorry Pain & Woe" by Hetti Lloyd, "More Love" by Foster Sylvers, and "We Can Make It If We Try" by The Sylvers. El (UK), Late 50s/1960s/1970s/1980s/1990s. Used 4 CDs ... $19.99
A huge set of music – one that's maybe a bit different than you might expect! Right from the start, Stanley Kubrick was a groundbreaking director – one who had a great sense of music on the screen – sometimes from film scores that he'd commission for his movies, sometimes from previous recordings that were used in really effective ways in a scene! This package focuses strongly on that second half of the Kubrick legacy – and includes selections by a huge amount of talents – including Ralph Vaughan Williams, John Coltrane, Sergei Prokofiev, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Johan Strauss, Toots Thielemans, Vera Lynn, Oscar Peterson, Bela Bartok, and others – as used in films that include Dr Strangelove, 2001 A Space Oddysey, Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, The Shining, and Eyes Wide Shut. The set also features film scores from Spartacus by Alex North and Lolita by Nelson Riddle – and the whole thing comes in a box set with a booklet – featuring 69 tracks in all, with a lot of musical surprises! Motown (Japan), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $29.99
A fantastic look at the funkier side of Motown in the 70s – and a collection that's not just straight disco, thanks to the mighty selection talents of DJ Muro and T-Groove! Muro handles all of CD1 – and mixes in some excellent soundtrack numbers with more familiar soul tracks – and also presents a few classic cuts in remixed versions too! T-Groove is on CD2 – which has cuts that are maybe a bit more iconic in the Motown club sound of the 70s, but still pretty darn great when heard together in this set. Neither CD appears to be mixed – tracks all appear discrete and standalone – and the package features 37 titles that include "You Made Your Bed" by Reuben Howell, "Books & Basketball" by David Shire & James Di Pasquale, "T Plays It Cool (unedited version)" by Marvin Gaye, "Erucu" by Jermaine Jackson, "Mirrors Of My Mind" by Jackson 5, "Date With The Rain (DJ Spinna refreak)" by Eddie Kendricks, "Ego" by Ozone, "Big Time (M+M big time 2016 mix)" by Rick James, "Treat Her Like A Lady" by The Temptations, "Brothers Gonna Work It Out (Joey Negro return of the mac mix)" by Willie Hutch, "He's A Friend" by Eddie Kendricks, "Down To Love Town" by The Originals, "Go For It" by Billy Preston & Syreeta, "Full Speed Ahead" by Tata Vega, "Let's Be Young Tonight" by Jermaine Jackson, "Heaven Must Have Sent You" by Bonnie Pointer, "Shoulda Gone Dancin" by High Energy, "Saturday Night Sunday Morning" by Thelma Houston, "Star Love" by Three Ounces Of Love, "Tailgate" by 21st Creation, "Scratchin" by Magic Disco Machine, "Standing On The Verge" by Platinum Hook, and "I Need Your Lovin (M+M lovin all night long mix)" by Teena Marie. A fantastic collection of grooves from contemporary Japan, but one that's heavy on all the best 70s elements that have always influenced the scene – served up here in a mix of jazz, soul, funk, and Brazilian elements by the mighty Ryuhei The Man! Ryuhei has turned us on to plenty of great music over the years, and even though he left this planet all too soon, the work on this set is testament to his amazing ear for really perfect cuts – almost at a level that made him sort of the Gilles Peterson of Japan! The set's a continuous mix, filled with great cuts we never would have heard otherwise – and titles include "Expansions (Ryuhei The Man Re-Edit)" by Nautilus, "I Wanna Show You" by Sauce81, "Midnight Magic (DJ Kawasaki 45 Edit)" by Cro-Magnon & Roy Ayers, "Be" by Wa Yo Set, "Double Decker (Sho Da Scottie Remix)" by QASB, "Look Ahead (The Man 45 Edit)" by Shuya Okino, "I Like It (Ryuhei The Man Jazzy Samba Instrumental Edit)" by Playa and more. An excellent collection of house tracks – old and new – selected and blended by Dimitri From Paris! The overall theme is an imaginary party at the Playboy Mansion – but from our personal experience, we can tell you that this set kicks a lot harder than the dancefloor at Hef's pad ever did! Dimitri takes off from the current ecstatic energy of the Parisian house scene, and the package is a totally stormin mix of 14 tracks that are all uptempo, all soulful, and all filled with the kind of hooks that will keep you on the floor all night long. Beautiful grooves from the Japanese scene – most of them from a time when its singers and musicians were leaning heavily on influences from American funk and soul, and turning out some wonderful music of their own! Fantasy/Decision, 1970s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the sharpest, jazziest funk you'll ever hope to hear – a smoking collection of the legendary 70s work by The Blackbyrds on Fantasy Records! The group started as a jazz combo under Donald Byrd's supervision – right at a time when Byrd was making his own fantastic funky records in the 70s – but working for the Bay Area Fantasy label, they really took off into an amazing groove that was all their own – still informed by jazz, but free to open up to lots of funk and soul elements too – sometimes with vocals in the lead, sometimes more focus on the kinds of solos that always set them apart from all their contemporaries! The cuts have some wonderful keyboard work from a young Kevin Toney – who's gone onto a lot of fame over the years – and production on all cuts is either by Larry Mizell, Donald Byrd, or George Duke – key 70s jazz funk forces who keep things mighty tight in the studio! The package features work from all Blackbyrds albums of the 70s – including the Cornbread Earl & Me soundtrack, and the Night Grooves remix set – and the package features 25 titles that include "Enter In", "Party Land", "Do It Fluid", "Gut Level", "Summer Love", "I Need You", "The Baby", "Blackbyrds' Theme", "City Life", "Rock Creek Park", "Walking In Rhythm", "A Hot Day Today", "Wilford's Gone", "One Gun Salute", "Supernatural Feeling", "Mysterious Vibes", and "Soft & Easy". Favorite (France), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
That's a mighty sexy cover on the front – and the grooves inside definitely have the flavor to match! The work here is from the obscure French disco underground – a European scene that never got the same exposure as German or Italian work for clubs – which makes the whole package a really great discovery in sound! The music is surprisingly fresh, and often quite funky too – and done in modes that are arguably warmer and more soulful than most other European disco – and often a lot like the best American underground club of the period. Some tracks have breathy female vocals, while others have bolder lyrics that almost echo some of the global musical crossovers happing in 70s Paris and a few of the later tracks bring in electro elements, but in a subtle way we totally love. The collection's a follow-up to the Brazilian Disco Boogie Sounds compilation – and like that one, it's really a cut above the usual! Titles include "Super Star" by Contessa, "Lady Jones" by Over Drive, "Music Madness (ext Charles Maurice version)" by Beckie Bell, "Y'A Du Blues" by Marche Noire, "Un Fait Divers & Rien De Plus (re-remix)" by Le Club, "Pour Moi Ca Va (Charles Maurice version)" by France Lise, "Polar (Charles Maurice version)" by Bernard Guyvan, and "Minuit L'Heure Du Swing" by Didier Makaga. A huge amount of work from The Cats & The Fiddle – a vocal group that stands as a strong bridge between some of the male quartets of the 30s and the big wave of R&B acts to come! The music here is nice and jazzy, often with a lot of guitar used to emphasize the rhythms – maybe in the Mills Brothers mode, but much more earthy and with a stronger current of blues – especially as the 40s move in, the the Cats hit all these kind of hip, groovy sorts of styles that are in the territory of Slim Gaillard or the early King Cole Trio! The package brings together 53 well-selected tracks from their singles of the late 30s and 1940s – titles that include "Sighing & Crying", "When Elephants Roost In Bamboo Trees", "Start Talking Baby", "Wine Drinker", "Darling Can't We Make A Date", "I'm Afraid Of You", "I'm Gonna Pull My Hair", "I'll Always Love You Just The Same", "One Is Never Too Old To Swing", "Pig's Idea", "Hep Cat's Holiday", "That's On Jack That's On", "Crawlin Blues", "Chant Of The Rain", and "Killer Diller Man From The South". Twimo/World Is My Oyster (Germany), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Heavy funk from 70s Turkey – proof that the world of the groove knew no boundaries at the time! The tunes here are all pretty heavily influenced by American funk and jazz of the period – awash in heavy beats, tight riffing, and wicked instrumentation that's often produced with a nice gritty edge that really matches the intensity of some of the best funky 45s! But the work also features a fair bit of Eastern influences as well – either in use of specific instruments, sounds, and phrasing – or the occasional Turkish vocals which really help freshen the groove. Side one is all funk – and very dirty, nasty, and with beats a lot heavier than you'd expect – and side two is jazz, but not your usual Anglo jazz from the time – and more in the world/jazz crossover style explored by labels like MPS! The whole thing's totally great – a record you'll proudly stack next to your best Mulatu albums, but which will take you even further! Titles include "Hilal" by Durul Gence 10, "Senlik" by Erol Peckan, "Cecen Kizi" by Emin Findikoglu, "Sevemek Istiyorum" by Erkut Tackin, "Karli Daglar" by Erkin Koray, "Aybatti (edit)" by Fikret Kizilok, "Dolana Dolana" by Mustafa Okzent Ve Orkestrasi, "Bermuda Seytan Ucgeni" by Aksu Orkestrasi, and "Kopruden Gecti Gelin" by Ferdi Ozbegen. An amazing set on Soundway that not only captures Highlife On The Move from the early 50s to mid 60s, it's essentially the roots of the music and dancefloor culture of some of greatest Ghanaian and Nigerian grooves to come! The historical relevance of the material is monumental to say the least – not only showing the diverse impact of calypso, mambo and jazz music that was being combined in the nascent-to-prime years of highlife, from Lagos to London – but it also includes what's thought to be the first ever recordings by Fela Kuti, with his Highlife Rakers combo. One of the greatest groups of the legendary 2 Tone records scene at the start of the 80s – and a group that's maybe got an even harder edge than their more familiar labelmates, The Specials! The groove here is revival ska, but with a lean, jagged quality that's very different than so many of the softer groups that sprang up in later years – definitely tied more to the sound of the late 70s punk years, overall – thanks in part to the urgency of the lead vocals of Pauline Black, who really seems to dominate the lyrics over the group's other singer, Arthur Hendrickson. Athens Of The North (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A really fantastic idea for a compilation – a set that brings together obscure covers of funk and soul tunes – mostly from the late 70s/early 80s generation, and mostly in a laidback, soul-stepping style! If you're a lover of rare groove, you'll recognize plenty of the songs, but not the versions – as these are all pretty darn rare and obscure, usually cut by indie artists who barely got any circulation for their recordings at the time – in the best tradition of super-rare work we usually expect from the Athens Of The North label! And while the title might indicate that the set features tracks in a lovers rock mode, the approach is maybe more indie soul overall – with only a hint of reggae inspiration in some of the grooves. The package features new takes on songs by Leon Ware, Mtume, Deniece Williams, Lowrell, and others – with titles that include "Rocking You Eternally" by Peter Hunningale, "For The Love Of You" by Simplicity, "What You Won't Do For Love" by Michael Gordon, "Do Me Baby" by Family Love, "Don't Let Love Get You Down" by Pure Silk, "Mellow Mellow Ride On" by Misses Misty, "Body Fusion" by Michael Prophet, and "Outstanding" by Al Charles. Coral, Mid 50s. Very Good ... $9.99
Modern jazz from the Coral Records label – a great collection of sides that really made the imprint sparkle in the 50s! The tracks here are a variety of selections from some of the best Coral jazzmen – not all of whom are easy to find on other records. Anthony Ortega really stands out on two tracks with arrangements by Dick Jacobs – "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" and "Where Or When" – and other titles include "Home Brew" and "Am I Blue" by Manny Albam, "Joe's Blues" by Joe Newman, and "This Time The Dream's On Me" by Hal McKusick. Lorez AlexandriaLorez Sings Pres – A Tribute To Lester Young ... LP
King, Late 50s. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99 12.98
A classic album from one of our favorite jazz singers ever – a set that really set a whole new standard for a generation! Even at this early stage, Lorez Alexandria was an amazingly accomplished vocalist – as you'll hear on this excellent selection of tunes from the Lester Young songbook – laidback and soulful tunes that really let her open up and do her thing! The backing on the album's nice and earthy – provided by a Chicago group that includes King Fleming piano, Charles Stepney vibes, Paul Serrano trumpet, and Vernel Fournier drums – and the overall style is perfect for Lorez' deep soulful vocals. Titles include "DB Blues", "Easy Living", "No Eyes Blues", "This Year's Kisses", and "Jumpin With Symphony Sid". LP, Vinyl record album

An assortment of collaborative improvisations – Duck Baker on guitar, and a range of top-flight musicians on the variety of different selections – work recorded over the past few decades, in spaces that includes clubs, homes, and studios around the world! Baker has always been a very versatile player – his albums always have such a different feel, it's often hard to say that there's one sort of style that defines his playing. And that versatility really shows up here – as you'll hear Duck in a series of duets with Michael Moore on alto, Mark Dresser on bass, Derek Bailey on guitar, Steve Beresford on piano, John Butcher on tenor, and Roswell Rudd on trombone – plus a trio with Alex Ward on clarinet and Joe Williamson on bass – and a quartet with Ward on clarinet, John Edwards on bass, and Steve Noble on drums. Titles include "Indie Pen Dance", "Duo For 225 Strings", "Pope Slark", "Signing Off", "The Missing Chandler", and "East River Delta Blues". CD

Han Bennink & Oscar Jan HooglandGoede Reis ... CD
ICP (Netherlands), 2020. New Copy ... $19.99 24.99
Drummer Han Bennink always has a way of picking the most creative improvisers to work with – and that's definitely the case here, as he teams up with Oscar Jan Hoogland – a musician whose main instrument is piano, but who also handles electric clavichord, record players, cassettes, megaphones, and crackle box – sometimes handling more than one instrument at once! The sonic variety makes for a hugely interesting record – a reminder that Bennink can always match himself up to whatever sort of environment is at hand, even if it's one that's supra-musical – and the music here really leaps from the grooves as the duo makes their way through selections that include "Propeller", "Fleurette Africaine Fleurete Japonaise", "Frafra Traffick/Masinko Monk/Rookgordijn/Rhythm Three", "Musique Automatique Typographique", "Hornin In Hornin Out/Peers Counting Song", and a version of "Ugly Beauty". Tim Berne's SnakeoilYou've Been Watching Me ... CD
ECM (Germany), 2015. Used ... $11.99
Tim Berne really seems to have found his great energy of old while working with his Snakeoil group – that richly-expressive sense of tones and timings that made him such a powerful force at the start, and which has really gotten us listening to his music all over again these days! Berne's on alto, but that's only part of the equation here – as the group also features these amazing lines from Oscar Noriega on clarinet and bass clarinet – used at a sharper level, to bring out even more edge than Tim's instrument. The group also has some excellent piano from Matt Mitchell – whose acoustic lines are a masterpiece of space and strength – sometimes balanced by his own electronics, and use of vibes, timpani, and other percussion by Ches Smith, the group's drummer. The guitars of Ryan Ferreira are used selectively, but in a way that only increases their power – and titles include "Lost In Redding", "Angles", "You've Been Watching Me", "Semi-Self Detached", and "False Impressions". ✨✧ BohannonVery Best Of Bohannon – Funky, Wicked, & Smooth ... CD
Rhino, Mid 70s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Hamilton Bohannon was completely unique in the world of soul and funk. He had a tight uptempo style that was sort of pre-disco and club oriented, yet which also had lots of choppy elements that made the groove a lot different than other artists of his time. Hard to pin down, but this selection of 14 tracks will give you more than enough of a good picture of his work – especially as it includes many rare gems, like "Foot Stompin Music", "South African Man", "Run It On Down Mr DJ", "Bohannon's Beat", and "You're The One". Also features his wonderful smooth steppin classic "Thoughts And Wishes", but we think the mix on here is different from the one on the original album. CD

Dee Dee Bridgewater with Irwin MayfieldDee Dee's Feathers ... CD
Okeh, 2015. Used ... $8.99
A really beautiful project from the great Dee Dee Bridgewater – a set that has the singer paying tribute to the city and culture of New Orleans, but in a way that's free of the hoke you'd find in other projects of this nature! Dee Dee approaches the music – as with all of her albums – from a rock-solid, jazz vocal approach – focusing first on her tremendous skills as a singer – her fantastic ability to interpret material and really make it her own – then finding space for other flourishes that color the compositions, with great help from Irvin Mayfield, who's at the instrumental helm of the project. And the tunes aren't just some post-Katrina soppy numbers trying to recreate the past – but a wonderful array of different selections that both echo the still-thriving, still-essential jazz culture in the city, and the range of 20th century expressions of its music. Way better than you might guess – and one of Bridgewater's best in years! Titles include "Treme Song/Do Whatcha Wanna", "Dee Dee's Feathers", "Big Chief", "One Fine Thing", "Whoopin Blues", "Congo Square", and "C'Est Ici Que Je T'Aime". CD

Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/1960s/1970s/1980s/1990s/Early 2000s. New Copy ... $18.99 20.99
The great Sonny Burgess is one of those underground rockers that fans of Sun Records really dig – but he's also one of the few from that scene who kept his light burning over the strongly – as you'll hear here in the first-ever cross-label collection to feature Sonny's music in all of its glory! The Sun recordings are here, sure – but there's also early Arkansas material, and some surprisingly strong work from the 70s and beyond – all recorded with this raw quality and sharp edge that makes it very hard to tell the old work from the newer tracks – something we can't always say for other rockabilly artists who hit the studios in later years. As usual with Bear Family, the presentation is great – very detailed notes, and a superb selection of tunes that includes "Automatic Woman", "Enough Of You", "Stuck Up", "My Heart Is Achin For You", "Fanny Brown (alt 1)", "Daddy Blues (alt 3)", "Rock On Mars", "Catbird Seat", "Little Town Baby", "Swingin", "Tomorrow Night", "Prisoners Song (alt 1)", "Read Headed Woman", " My Bucket's Got A Hole In It (alt 2)", "Sadie's Back In Town", "Truckin Down The Avenue", and "We Wanna Boogie". Solomon BurkeHome In Your Heart – Best Of Solomon Burke ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino, Early 60s. Used 2 CDs ... $6.99
Genius – pure genius! Solomon Burke is one of those soul singers you always hear folks about, but who you never seem to get to hear as much as folks like Otis Redding, Ray Charles, Wilson Pickett, or any of his other label-mates on Atlantic. This excellent 2CD set will correct that problem – as it brings together 41 tracks from Solomon's glory days at Atlantic, and the selection of material is fantastic all the way through. Solomon's voice is indescribably majestic – soaring over the top of the tightly-woven arrangements that were some of Atlantic's first real forays into soul music. The set does a good job of showing the full range of his talents during the 60s – and it moves way past the few hits he had, which always seem to get repeated endlessly when anyone brings up his name. Tracks include "Save It", "Get Out Of My Life Woman", "Detroit City", "Take Me (Just As I Am)", "When She Touches Me (Nothing Else Matters)", "Looking For My Baby", "I'm Hanging Up My Heart For You", "Cry To Me", "If You Need Me", "The Price", "You're Good For Me", "Words", "It's Been A Change", "Time Is A Thief", "Stupidity", and "Woman, How Do You Make Me Love You Like I Do". Dave Burrell & Motoharu YoshizawaDreams ... CD
Trio (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... $13.99
If you've ever doubted the genius of pianist Dave Burrell, this may well be the record to push you over the top – as the album captures Burrell at the height of his power, at a time when he was very much in a long-form, incredibly dynamic mode of improvisation – equal maybe to the greatness of Cecil Taylor during the same time! Yet Burrell can also balance his moods and modes, too – so that one of the album's long numbers, he's completely on fire – whereas on the other he's got a much more spacious sense of improvisation – really waiting and sounding things out, with superb accompaniment from bassist Motoharu Yoshizawa on both selections. Yoshizawa has this incredible boldness on the fast, free tune "Red/Black" – then comes at his instrument in a completely different way on the moodier, more contemplative "Green/Day Dream". CD

Muzak/NJA (Netherlands), Late 50s/1960s. New Copy ... $19.99 29.99
A wonderful collection of work from Dutch singer Ann Burton – all of it recorded before her breakthrough album, Blue Burton – featured in a set that includes her debut EP release from 1965, and a decade's worth of music from Ann's own archives, which appear here for the first time ever! Burton's a hell of a singer – already a fantastic stylist at the start, with a jazz-based ability to inflect and make every song her own – maybe an extension of 50s modes of singers like June Christy or Chris Connor, but also very much her own spirit as well. The set features Burton with small combos, larger groups, and even a few "with strings" sessions – a selection of 24 tracks that provides a key look at these early years of her career. Titles include "Let's Get Away From It All", "Fly Me To The Moon", "Miss Otis Regrets", "Sing A Rainbow", "Exactly Like You", "You've Changed", "The Moon Looks Down & Laughs", "Mood Indigo", "They Didn't Believe Him", "You Can Have Him", and "Let's Try It". The group here are freely improvising, but also working with graphic scores at points – in a mode that's very much in keeping with the early experiments that Zorn was creating at the time – and which draws plenty from the young genius of all the other group members too! Warmly lyrical work from pianist Bill Charlap – a set that has him working with superb rhythm accompaniment from Peter Washington on bass and Kenny Washington on drums! Both of the Washingtons have recorded with Charlap before – and together as a trio, the group seems to open up with even more lyrical sensitivity than some of Bill's earlier recordings – kind of that perfect balance that a top-shelf piano trio like this can hit, at a level that both lives up to all the promise of the format, while also putting its own sort of special stamp on the music! That's definitely the case here – as familiar tunes are given a very personal spin, on selections that include "Out Of Nowhere", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "Street Of Dreams", "The Duke", and "Your Host". Chosen FewTrojan Albums Collection (Hit After Hit/Everybody Plays The Fool/Chosen Few In Miami/bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A trio of albums from this fantastic group – plus bonus tracks too! First up is Hit After Hit – a tremendous album that has The Chosen Few stepping out to match some of the best American harmony soul groups of the early 70s – vocals you might hear from The Moments or Delfonics, but tuned towards rhythms that are much more Kingston than New Jersey or Philly! Yet there's also a few funky moments too – a rare element that really shows how the group could change things up from some of their Jamaican contemporaries, on titles that include a version of the "Shaft" theme, plus "You're A Big Girl Now", "Everybody Plays The Fool", "Melting Pot", "Ebony Eyes", "Do Your Thing", "People Make The World Go Round", and "I'm Sorry". Everybody Plays The Fool is a record that's as much an early 70s reggae set as it is a strong bit of east coast soul – Kingston rhythms mixed with fantastic harmonies that maybe echo more of the East Coast group soul modes than some of the earlier Jamaican groups of the 60s! The choice of material also echoes that quality too – as The Chosen Few take on older soul classics, remade for a reggae market – mixed with a few original tracks of their own. Titles include "My Thing", "Reggae Stuff", "I Second That Emotion", "Make Way For The Young Folks", "La La At The End", and "Tears Of A Clown". Chosen Few In Miami is legendary soul from The Chosen Few – a group who were as much a 70s soul outfit as they were a reggae group! This album's the group's greatest – recorded in Miami with classic TK funky production from King Sporty, who also seems to be backing them up on most of the set. There's certainly a reggae feel to the album at times, but the group's harmonies are much more in an American soul vein – and Sporty's super-dope backings use plenty of wah-wah guitar, electric keys, and that burning, bubbling Miami soul groove that made so many of the TK albums from the time so great! Titles include the stone funky classic "Funky Buttercup", plus "Wandering", "Candy I'm So Doggone Mixed Up", "Why Can't We Live", "Drift Away", "I Am A Man", and "Hit Me With Music". 2CD set also features 11 more bonus tracks – including related work by Lloyd Charmers Selection! Aaron CohenMove On Up – Chicago Soul Music & Black Cultural Power ... Book
University Of Chicago, 2019. New Copy ... $16.99 20.00
A tremendous achievement from music writer Aaron Cohen – a book that finally gets at the deeper, richer story of Chicago soul – the spirit of empowerment and pride that have always made us so honored to be part of the Windy City legacy! Cohen picks up where other soul writers have left off on Chicago – really looking at the shifts into the 70s, which included greater ties to the means of production, and an increased role in the social agenda as well – all part of an evolution in songwriting styles, production techniques, and the growing power of the full length album over the 7" single! Cohen looks at many key figures of the time – Earth Wind & Fire, Chaka Khan & Rufus, Curtis Mayfield, Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble – and the very well-researched book is a delight to read throughout – easily the deepest work that Cohen's ever given us. 234 pages, softcover, with some black and white images – and a selected discography too. Light In The Attic, 1971. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99 On March 25, 2022
Enigmatic folk rock and soulful bluesy vocals from Karen Dalton – her legendary lost 1971 album that's credited with inspiring some the most idiosyncratic work by folk rock superstars and contemporary freak folk heroes alike! Karen was a fixture on the 60s NY folk scene – Dylan even gives her props in his Chronicles Vol 1 memoirs – but she rarely recorded. Her voice carries a huge Billie Holiday influence – but the delivery is wholly unique in her earthy folk phrasing, a real dip back into Harry Smith territory. Her guitar and banjo picking is strong, too! In My Own Time was recorded for Paramount at the end of 1970 and beginning of '71, with really rich and surprisingly soulful backing on an interesting selection of material written or popularized by Dylan & The Band, George Jones, Paul Butterfield, and even a folksy soul take on "When A Man Loves A Woman". Other tracks include "Something On Your Mind", "In My Own Dream", the traditional "Katie Cruel", "One Night Of Love" and "Are You Leaving For The Country". 50th Anniversary version includes 9 bonus tracks! Really compelling work from the farther reaches of the UK jazz scene – a series of "agile experiments" from drummer Dave DeRose – who works here with other musicians from the scene in a series of unbridled improvisations! The work was created with two guiding principles – the musicians could not discuss or plan their performance together in advance, and they would also play for a full hour, with no breaks at all! The idea grew out of a series of live performances, but then was captured by Dave in the studio – with results that are as varied as the musicians involved. Some selections are very unusual and almost abstract, others have a more familiar free jazz mode – and the ability of DeRose to shift in these spaces is one of the highlights of the set. The first volume includes performances with John Edwards on bass and Dan Nicholls on electronics; Rory Simmons on trumpet and electronics and George Crowley on saxes and effects; Dan Nicholls on electronics and Karl Vanden Bossche on percussion; Tom Challenger on saxes and Colin Somervell on bass; Sam Crowe on Rhodes and effects and Level Nevill Malcolm on bass; and Dario Rossetti Bonell on guitar and effects. One of the first international collections to showcase the genius of Francisco Fellove Valdes – a singer and percussionist who first rose up on the scene in Havana in the 50s, but who made an undeniably strong contribution to the Mexican scene of the late 50s and early 60s – with the sort of material showcased in this set! Fellove's got a very unusual style of singing – influenced a bit by scatting in jazz, but also given more of the prouder, louder calls that you'd hear on an Afro Cuban jam session – a great balance with the heavy percussion and jazzy instrumentation used on these tracks, almost all of which were recorded for RCA down in Mexico. The track selection is wonderful, and the notes do a great job of introducing the world to this sometimes-overlooked figure in Latin music – presented here with 21 tracks that include "Mango Mangue", "Baile Mi Rumba", "Te Quiero Corazon", "El Yoyo", "San Jose", "Alejate De Mi", ""Mata Siguaraya", "Baile El Minuet", "Baila Mi Guapacha", and "Guapacheando". The record has a story that lives up to its title – as the group recorded the set in the ruins of an abandoned paper factory – once home to hundreds of workers in the town in which they were living at the time, then a casualty to changing labor modes as industrialization shifted to other points of the globe! As such, the music is often very brooding and dark – still with punkish guitars and vocals, but also noise and effects that really set the mood. The track titles all fit the spirit of the record too – eight different selections, all numbered versions of "Sucked Out Chucked Out". LP, Vinyl record album
(First time reissue – with poster and booklet!)

FeltForever Breathes The Lonely Word ... CD
Creation/Cherry Red (UK), 1986. New Copy ... $13.99 18.99 About February 10, 2022
The first full album that Felt cut for Creation Records – and a tremendous selection of timeless pop tunes that shows that their move to the label was the best thing they ever did! The band's sound is tightened up considerably from their Cherry Red years – compressing organ solos, guitar passages, and Lawrence's introspective vocals into tunes that were filled with a sort of timeless sense of pop – never cloying, never witless – just magically "Felt-like", with an aura that was all its own. One of the finest rock records of the past 30 years, and a real bright spot in the 80s! Titles include "Down But Not Yet Out", "September Lady", "Gather Up Your Wings & Fly", "Hours Of Darkness Have Changed My Mind", and "Rain Of Crystal Spires". CD

Flow Trio with Joe McPheeWinter Garden ... CD
ESP, 2021. New Copy ... $12.99
The legendary Joe McPhee makes a great appearance here – pushing the Flow Trio to a level of intensity that makes the album rival some of the mid 60s greats from the early years of the ESP label! The sound is wonderfully full and free – McPhee just blowing tenor, with a fantastic tone – alongside the tenor and soprano of Louie Belogenis, the bass of Joe Morris, and drums of Charles Downs – three players who definitely know and understand each others' energy, and work together seamlessly at level that just makes the contributions of McPhee more icing on the cake. The whole album is freely improvised, and with a nice sense of variety – on selections that include "Harbinger", "Recombinant", "Rabble Rouser", "Glistening", "Accretion", and "Winter Garden". CD

FoxFox Box (Fox/Tails Of Illusion/Blue Hotel/Images/bonus tracks) (4CD set) ... CD
GTO/Cherry Red (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $29.99 38.99
A great box collection of work from Fox– a group who recorded a handful of albums in the mid 70s, all with kind of a post-glam production style that makes all the instruments come together in this cool wash of sound, which also works perfectly for the vocals of the female lead singer – the enigmatic Noosha! The tunes are catchy, but nicely not entirely commercial – really well put-together in the studio, thanks to Kenny Young's production, who's also in the group on second guitar – bowing nicely to the strong talents of Herbie Armstrong – who handles the lead with a nicely condensed sound that works perfectly for the group's approach. There's a charm here that's hard to describe – lost material between the early 70s pop years and the smoothness of AOR, with some of the best qualities of both – served up here with enough studio work that will make you a Kenny Young fan forever – on three full albums, Fox, Tails Of Illusion, and Blue Hotel – plus the bonus Images selection of other tracks, and other bonus tracks too – 56 tracks in all, with a big booklet of notes! ✨✧ Serge GainsbourgLe Cinema De Serge Gainsbourg (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Universal (France), Late 50s/1960s. New Copy ... $16.99
The coolest collection we've ever seen to focus on the soundtrack work of the great Serge Gainsbourg – and the most complete as well! The package really digs deep – and seems to offer up tracks from just about every single film that Gainsbourg was involved with – from his own compositions, to partnerships with greats like Alain Goraguer, Michel Colombier, and the mighty Jean-Claude Vannier – all of whom come up with very groovy, often funky instrumentation that rivals Serge's own releases! In fact, we might well even say that we find the Gainsbourg soundtrack material to be even cooler – as the films often gave Serge a chance to experiment, and try out new ideas he wouldn't do on his own records. This LP package is a great distillation of the larger CD set, with a focus on the grooviest cuts – and includes selections from the films L'Eau A La Bouche, Manon 70, Anna, Si Jetais Un Espion, Le Pacha, Slogan, Une Vueve En Or, and Les Chemins De Katmandou. Goldie & The GingerbreadsThinking About The Good Times – Complete Recordings 1964 to 1966 ... CD
Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
A heck of a great girl group from the 60s – one who never got much play on our side of the Atlantic, but who were one of the most unique UK groups of the time! For one thing, the quartet didn't just sing to studio backings – they also played their own instruments too – which made them more in the mode of some of the mod male British acts of the time than some of the more polished Brit pop female singers! Not that they didn't get great help in the studio, though – as some of these cuts feature top production efforts from giants like Alan Price and Shel Talmy – both of whom never get in the girls' way, and just find a mode to let their sound shine even more strongly on record! Goldie & The Gingerbreads never got the full fame they deserved – save for a few singles issued on Decca and smaller labels – but they did record plenty for a brief stretch, as you'll hear here in a selection of 20 tracks that includes a few unissued tracks done for Atlantic Records as well. Titles include "That's Why I Love You", "Can't You Hear My Heartbeat", "Look For Me Baby", "The Skip", "VIP", "Bye Bye Baby", "What Kind Of Man Are You", "Something Beautiful", "Chew Chew Fee Fi Fum", "Little Boy", and "Sporting Life". Al GreenLove Ritual – Rare & Previously Unreleased 1968 to 1976 ... CD
Hi Records/Fat Possum, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $11.99 13.99
A selection of earlier Al Green numbers issued originally at the end of the 70s – with new mixing by Willie Mitchell, who'd produced all the original sides. Titles include "Love Ritual", which is a nice groover with some congas in the mix giving the whole thing an earthier thump under the trademark 70s Hi Records sound – and ultimately, upon revisiting this compilation, Mitchell does a pretty great job of filtering Al's wandering muse at this point through the trademark sounds of Memphis and Hi Records! plus "Glory Glory", "Let It Shine", "Keep Me Cryin", "Oh Me Oh My", "I Tried To Tell Myself", and "Smile A Little Bit More". Tubby HayesEngland's Late Jazz Great ... LP
IAJRC, Late 50s/1960s/Early 70s. Near Mint- ... $9.99
An album of radio broadcast material from Tubby Hayes – an excellent collection of work by one of the greatest tenor players ever! Tubby's solos are a lot stronger than you'd expect for the average broadcast gig – as you'll hear on these tracks that date from 1957 through 1972, and which feature Tubby in large and small group configurations. As always, he's playing with some of the best talents in British jazz – but the cuts have been specially selected to focus on material with Tubby's tenor soloing away at it's best. Titles include "The Goblin", "Suria", "Heather Mist", "You Know I Care", and "Song for A Sad Lady". LP, Vinyl record album

Ajay Heble & Rob WallacePeople Get Ready – The Future Of Jazz Is Now ... Book
Duke, 2013. New Copy ... $5.99 26.95
The future of jazz is now, even if it's in the past – as the editors here bring together a selection of essays that document the forward-thinking movements in jazz from the mid 60s onwards – some of which are only getting full appreciation all these many years later! There's a nice variety of subjects from an equally nice variety of writers – and essays include "Jeanne Lee's Voice" by Eric Porter, "Days Of Bread & Roses" by Mark Ribot, "Experimental Music In The Academy In New York City" by Tamar Barzel, "The Antiquity Of The Avant Garde" by John Szwed, "Black Jazz In The Digital Age" by Greg Tate, and "Ancient To The Future" by members of the AACM, including Nicole Mitchell, Matana Roberts, Don Moye, Wadada Leo Smith, and Roscoe Mitchell. There's also a section on the "Jazz Photography Of Thomas King" – and the whole thing is 312 pages, softcover, with some black and white photographs. Book

Bernard HerrmannFantasy Film World Of Bernard Herrmann ... CD
El (UK), Late 40s/1950s. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
Most folks know Bernard Herrmann for his famous moody soundtracks for Alfred Hitchcock, or his late life genius on the Taxi Driver score – but Herrmann also had a great ear for more fantastic styles, too – and could turn his dark orchestrations into other cool spacey and watery styles too! This collection brings together the best of that music – work that had an undeniable impact on some of the Italian exotic scoring of the late 50s and early 60s, and which also has a bit more intimacy and character than the American soundtracks for bigger, more epic productions. CD features a total of 31 tracks, with a number of selections each from the films The Day The Earth Stood Still, 7th Voyage Of Sinbad, Ghost & Mrs Muir, Beneath The 12 Mile Reef, and Journey To The Center Of The Earth.
