A freewheeling jazz set from the German scene of the 70s – one of those really great Euro albums that's not free jazz, but not conventional hardbop either – maybe borrowing a bit from Brazilian jazz, mixed with some of the warmth of the Cali 70s scene as well, and a touch of modal energy too – all wrapped up in a warmly flowing style that's mighty nice! The set features strong work on both tenor and soprano sax from Wilson De Oliveira, mixed with both acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes from Henryk Darlowski – and a mixture of electric and acoustic bass from Reinhard Gloder, next to drums from Clemens Schuster, listed as playing "orange drums" (?) – on ttles that include "Summer Dance", "Henryk's Trick", "High Do", "Slow Post", and "Montserrat". Very righteous work from this obscure 70s poet – a contemporary to Nikki Giovanni, Camille Yarbrough, and others – but not nearly as widely recorded! The album features no instrumentation, just Sonia reading her poems – and the work itself is pretty progressive, very much in the spirit of other hip female poets of the time, although perhaps a bit more personal in some of the subject matter – especially given that the album is introduced by Sanchez as "talking about love – a black woman's love for her man, children, nation." The spring groover is breezy, summer's is nice and steamy, the dancefloor grooves shift and phase for autumn, and winter is cool and delicate. A lost fusion classic from the early 70s – one of the only records cut under the leadership of drummer Horacee Arnold, but a heck of a great little set with a soaringly righteous sound! The style here is plenty full-on, but a bit less rock-leaning than some of the other Columbia fusion of the period – thanks to a spacious vision on Arnold's part, and the inclusion of a fair bit of sounds from world music. Players on the set include Art Webb on flute, Sonny Fortune on soprano sax, John Abercrombie on guitar, David Friedman on vibes and marimba, Dom Um Romao on percussion, and Jan Hammer on moog and electric piano – and although there's a fair bit of guitar in the mix, the other acoustic elements are kept nice and high too – for a blend that's almost like some of the best Brazilian fusion from later years, touched by a slightly funkier sound! Tracks really stretch out nicely, allowing for plenty of solo space as they roll on, in a way that's almost a cross between Strata East and some of the more familiar mainstream fusion modes of the time. One of our favorite moments in the strong run of records from Family – a set that's still strongly defined by the vocals and songwriting of Roger Chapman, but which also has a lot more going on as well! John Wetton's joined the group for this album, and adds in bass and a bit of vocals – and seems to really jump start their sound in a great way – and the production is great, too – really opening up with some of those new styles that were helping change the UK scene as progressive acts found a way to pack more into a smaller space – resulting in shorter tunes that still bristled with plenty of excitement! The vocal interplay is especially great – and titles include "Between Blue & Me", "Spanish Tide", "Burning Bridges", "Take Your Partners", "Crinkly Grin", "Larf & Sing", "Save Some For Thee", and "Satdy Barfly". Another extremely strong batch of 70s AOR grooving from Kalapana – a tight ensemble who were kind of Hawaii's answer to the slicker sounds of the LA scene during the mid 70s. Kalapana appeal to our ears in the same way as America, later Doobie Brothers, and other smooth and mellow mainstream favorites – and this third album's as great a representation of their work as you'll ever hear. A great album by Curtis Mayfield – filled with some excellent lesser-known gems! There's No Place Like America was Curtis' scathing testament to the State Of The Union – and it's got a hip political tone that's right up there with the best of his early 70s songwriting – perhaps even more so, as the message is a bit subtler than on other albums, and laid out in this stoner mellow funk vein that's very tasty throughout, and which makes for an extremely unified album! The album includes a version of the cut "Hard Times", which was done earlier by Baby Huey, plus "Blue Monday People", "Love To The People", and "When Seasons Change". Two rare albums from one of the greatest modern pianists ever! Jaki Byard With Strings is a wonderful album – and nothing like any other "with strings" album you've ever heard! Sure, the set does have some stringed instruments in the group – but it's a small combo session with bass, violin, guitar, and cello, not a large overly-orchestral affair. Byard's mad vision uses these strings wonderfully to carve out some oddly arranged tunes that mix together soul jazz grooving and a haunting spiritual approach to jazz that points at later work on labels like Strata East. Includes a sublime remake of "Music To Watch Girls By", "Falling Rains Of Life", "Cat's Cradle Conference Rag", and a long version of "How High The Moon". Solo Piano is an obscure set from 1969, featuring Byard's lonely musings on the keyboard on shorter tracks that reference a huge history of traditions. Previously unreleased live material by Rahsaan Roland Kirk – recorded during his headiest years at Atlantic records! Kirk in the studio is already plenty darn great – with an extremely inventive approach to rhythm, song structure, and soloing – but in a live setting, he opens up even more, and often lets his most playful spirit come in and really transform the tunes! The style here is similar to Roland's Bright Moments live date for Atlantic, but with less talking and more music overall – a sometimes straighter jazz approach that features tenor, flute, manzello, stritch, and clarinet from Kirk – plus piano by Ron Burton, bass by Henry Pete Pearson, drums by Richie Goldberg, and added percussion by Joe Texidor. Recording quality is quite strong, despite the "unreleased" nature of the tapes – and there's a very strong Coltrane vibe running through some of the tracks. The group use Hammond organ as much as guitar on most of the tracks – creating a sound that's swirling, building, and almost spiritual at times – thanks to some higher ideals espoused in the lyrics! Other instrumentation includes heavy bass and drums – the usual, but used in ways that reach some loftier new heights, especially on the more extended numbers – which have jazzy, proggy elements.
