Long, open-ended later work from Chet Baker – the kind of album that still had him working out interesting ideas in his music! The group features Harold Danko on piano, Greg Herbert on tenor, Ron Carter on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums – on cuts that include "ESP", "Shifting Down", "Tidal Breeze", and "Once Upon A Summertime". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original early 80s US pressing. Includes the booklet. Cover has a cutout notch, light wear, small scrapes in front, and is bent at the corners of the spine.)

A true classic by Jimi with the original Experience lineup – the third of three straight up masterpiece LPs to come out in just over a year's time by the group! You could call the leftfield astral effects in the mix experimental if you had to – innovations in the studio with echo, that hallucinatory backwards sound effect and other stranger bits – but the passionate, naturally expressive playing and singing by Jimi makes it all fell just right, and the Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell still don't get enough credit for being at the heart of such greatness. A massive 2LP effort that includes "Voodoo Chile", "Crosstown Traffic", "Electric Ladyland", "Little Miss Strange", "Moon Turn The Tides", "Still Raining Still Dreaming" and "All Along The Watchtower". LP, Vinyl record album
(70s auto-coupled UK Polydor pressing. Cover has light ring wear, a few light scrapes and pen imprints, some wear at the corners, small dents at the opening, and is bent a bit at the edges.)

Rodena Preston & The Voices Of Deliverance —
Holdin' On ... LP Birthright, 1977. Very Good ...
$3.99
... LP, Vinyl record album
(Vinyl appears foggy from oxidation and plays with some surface noise. Cover has light wear and a few small scrapes in front near the opening.)
A classic batch of Bay Area Brazilian grooves – recorded in the sweet breezy electric style of the Fantasy studios, and featuring the vocals of the lovely Flora Purim in the lead! The session's got a great mix of Brazilian and American fusion players – including Airto (of course!), Ron Carter, George Duke, Egberto Gismonti, Alphonso Johnson, Robertinho Silva, Hermeto Pascoal, and Ndugu Leon Chancler. Pascoal's reed work is a very nice treat, especially over the warm keyboards of George Duke. Purim's voice is as wonderful as ever, and the album's got lots of nice numbers, like "Ina's Song", "Andei (I Walked)", "Time's Lie", and "Open Your Eyes You Can Fly". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has edge wear, some peeling in ring-form in front, some small scrapes, and is bent a bit at the spine.)
A nice record from Ruiz and one that really combines jazz elements with a Latin sound. Ruiz composed and arranged the songs on the record and plays piano as well. His ensemble consists of such players as Lew Soloff on trumpet, Steve Turre on trombone & seashells, Sam Rivers on flute and tenor & soprano sax, Russell Blake on electric bass and Ignacio Berroa on drums, plus others. The tracks include "Home Cookin", "Puerto Rican Children", "Four West", "Something Grand", "Sunrise Over Madarao", and "One Step Ahead". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear and some scrapes near the spine.)
Solo work by Art Tatum, recorded with pretty high fidelity by Gene Norman at the Shrine Auditorium in LA! Despite the larger venue, there's a nice sense of intimacy here – both in the sound, and in Tatum's playing – which has a personal, speculative quality that's much more like hearing him in the wee hours at some small club. Titles include "The Man I Love", "Yesterdays", "Willow Weep For Me", "How High The Moon", "I Know That You Know", and "Tatum Pole Boogie". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has ring impressions, some edge wear, bent corners, and some scrapes at the top right.)
Includes "Hold Me Now" & "Doctor! Doctor!" LP, Vinyl record album
(CRC pressing. Vinyl has a mark that clicks a bit at the start of "Doctor! Doctor!". Cover has some light scrapes, some wear at the bottom corners, and is lightly bent at the top seam and bottom right corner.)

Dave Grusin made a few sleepy albums in his day, but this isn't one of them – and instead, it's a sweet funky fusion outing that really sums up some of the best Dave Grusin modes of the 70s! This excellent LP from 1977 really captures the best of the Grusin soundtrack style – heard in the 70s on shows like Barretta, or in films like Three Days of the Condor – mellow fusion with a tightly arranged style – lots of nicely isolated instrumentation, and the kind of spare and spacey grooves that you'd expect from a hip CTI session! Musicians include Grover Washington on saxes, Dave Valentin on flute, Ron Carter on bass, and Steve Gadd himself – plus Grusin on a lot of sweet keyboards – and titles include great cut "Modaji", plus "Heart Is A Lonely Hunter", "Catavento", and "Montage". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has minimal surface wear, some light scrapes near the bottom, light shelf wear, and is bent a bit at the spine.)
(Cover has some surface wear, a few scrapes and small blemishes, lightly bent sides and corners, and is lightly stained across the bottom edge with bumped corners.)
Early 70s Cali country rock at its finest! This is the first album by Detroit-born, Texas-raised JD Souther – who has a deft hand for sadness-tinged songcraft, a charismatic and genuine southern drawl to his voice, and just enough grit to give his tunes the right kind of emotional undercurrent. There's a realness here that really sinks in. We sort of wish he would've shot to stardom is prominently as other Asylum singer-songwriters and his friends in The Eagles – he definitely deserves it – but there's something warm and cozy (and maybe a little selfish) about having him more to ourselves and other knowing fans. Includes "The Fast One", "Run Like A Thief", "Kite Woman", "Jesus In 3/4 Time", "It's The Same", "White Wing", "Out To Sea", "Lullaby" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some ring and edge wear, center split in the spine, small scrapes and pen imprints in front, and is lightly bent at the edges.)
A hell of a record from Supertramp – the set that catapulted them into global stardom after a late 70s run of really great, but overlooked albums! The album is a pure pop masterpiece all the way through – catchy tunes with slightly deeper ideas – a nice sense of striving in the lyrics, but never too overdone – and maybe as many great keyboard lines as the one classic album to precede it by the group – Crime Of The Century! Every cut's a classic – and titles include "Child Of Vision", "Take The Long Way Home", "Oh Darling", "Breakfast In America", "Goodbye Stranger", "Gone Hollywood", "The Logical Song", and "Just Another Nervous Wreck". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has light wear, some small scrapes, and lightly bent panels.)

70's issue of one of the Donald Byrd/Pepper Adams sessions for the Warwick label, from the early 60's. The groove is nice and hard, with a very tight, very in-the-pocket sort of sound. A young Herbie Hancock plays piano, and he lays down solos that are a lot more daring, and with a lot more fire, than anything he did on his early Blue Note recordings. With the cuts "Out Of This World", "Day Dreams", "Bird House", and a stellar cover of "Mr. Lucky". LP, Vinyl record album
(Red label pressing – TCB 1002. Cover has some ring and edge wear, light scrapes near the opening, and some application wrinkles.)

JB Lenoir —
Natural Man ... LP Chess, Mid 50s. Near Mint- ...
Out Of Stock
A really great collection of Chess Records work by JB Lenoir – one of the more unusual singers on the Chicago scene at the time – and one with a sound that's pretty darn great all the way through! Lenoir's tone is a pitch or two up from most of his contemporaries – not as gritty and deep, and with inflections that almost point the way towards soul singers in the generation to come. Yet the backings are definitely in the best Windy City modes of the time – as Lenoir plays some great electric guitar, alongside Alex Atkins on alto, Ernest Cotton on tenor, Joe Montgomery on piano, and Willie Dixon on bass. The set mixes vintage singles with a few unreleased tracks – and titles include "Natural Man", "Don't Dog Your Woman", "Don't Touch My Head", "Five Years", "Mama What About Your Daughter", "Korea Blues", "Let Me Die With The One I Love", "I'm In Korea", and "Carrie Lee". LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 70s mono blue fade label pressing. Cover has some ringwer, edge wear, light scrapes in front, and some writing in pen in back.)
A seminal record in the formation of the Pat Metheny sound of the 70s – a set that brings his wonderfully chromatic work on guitar into play with the piano of Lyle Mays – all at a level that's so stripped-down and spacious, you can easily hear all the genius as it unfolds! And yet the album's also markedly different from some of the other ECM material at the time – as Pat's really stating himself with some more personal ideas, a bit of warm tunefulness, and maybe just a slight current of sentiment – which is what makes the record so wonderful, and so different than some of his labelmates. The set also features Eberhard Weber on bass and Dan Gottlieb on drums – on titles that include "Lakes", "River Quay", "Watercolors", "Icefire", "Oasis", and "Sea Song". LP, Vinyl record album
(Later US pressing. Cover has light ring impressions and some light scrapes near the bottom.)
(Cover has lightly bent panels, with some ring and edge wear, light surface scrapes, and a DeWolfe Music Library stamp, large index label with number in marker, and some notes in back.)

Barrett Strong —
Stronghold ... LP Capitol, 1975. Near Mint- ...
Out Of Stock
Surprisingly nice album of modern soul grooves cut by the man who's best known for the classic Motown track "Money". Barrett sings in a nice smooth style different from his older work, and he's playing with a nice LA group that has a smooth groove to it, and which features Wah Wah Watson and Ray Parker guesting on guitars. Most tracks were written by Barrett, and the titles include "Is It True", "Surrender", "Do You Want My Love", "Mary, Mary You", "I Wanna Do The Thang", and "There's Something About You". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a cutout hole, lightly bent corners, a few small scrapes at the opening, and some light stains at the top, mostly in back.)

Stan Getz —
Focus ... LP Verve, 1961. Very Good Gatefold ...
Out Of Stock
Oft-overlooked album that's actually one of Getz's most far-reaching of the 60s! Recorded in the year before he got caught up in his bossa pop frenzy, the record shows Getz as a darkly toned modernist, weaving out complex solos over the album's extended suite "Focus", written and arranged by the great Eddie Sauter, with whom Stan worked on the Mickey One soundtrack. The album's a surprisingly refreshing one, and shows yet another complex side of Getz's endlessly compelling career. Titles include "Pan", "Her", "Night Rider", and "Once Upon A Time". LP, Vinyl record album
Two of the greatest voices in country music – paired together beautifully in this classic production by Billy Sherrill! Titles include their version of Willie Nelson's "Yesterday's Wine" – plus "After I Sing All My Songs", "Must've Been Drunk", "Silver Eagle", "No Show Jones", and "I Haven't Found Her Yet". LP, Vinyl record album

Impact —
Impact ... LP Atco, 1976. Near Mint- ...
Out Of Stock
Plenty of Impact from this great Philly group – a soaring quartet who harmonize with some great Bobby Eli arrangements – at a level that shines as strongly as the best 70s work by Blue Magic or The Spinners! Impact never broke the big time as strongly, but they're a great group in the best 70s Philly mode – rooted in an older harmony style, but able to really take off with some sweet Sigma Sound styles – the sort of balance that few other groups managed to handle this well. The quartet features Damon Harris, who sang with the Temptations after Eddie Kendricks left in 1971 – and the group is a re-formation of The Young Vandals, who recorded briefly on T-Neck before Harris left for the Temps. Titles include "Happy Man", "Give A Broken Heart A Break", "Love Attack", "It Only Happens In the Movies", and "Winning Combination". LP, Vinyl record album
An offshoot of the 4AD rock scene from the UK, this number sampled Rakim from "Paid In Full" to great effect – and it made quite a bit of sense that the track was issued on 4th & Broadway in the US (probably also a legal move, so that the label wouldn't sue 4AD for copping a sample from one of their artists! The record features a bit of scratching by CJ Mackintosh, with a bubbly beat that made it huge on both sides of the Atlantic. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Modern Jazz Quartet —
Plastic Dreams ... LP Atlantic, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold ...
Out Of Stock
One of the groovier albums the Modern Jazz Quartet ever recorded – as you might expect, given the cover and title! In addition to the group's usual cool sound from Milt Jackson's vibes, the set also features John Lewis playing a bit of harpsichord in addition to his usual piano – and the group's also augmented on a few tracks with some great horns from Snookie Young and Joe Newman on trumpets, Garnett Brown on trombone, Jim Buffington on French horn, and Don Butterfield on tuba – a change that really gives the record a nicely different flavor from other MJQ albums. John Lewis composed all of the tracks – and titles include "Walkin Stomp", "Dancing", "Plastic Dreams", "Variations On A Christmas Theme", "Travlin", "Piazza Novona", and "England's Carol". LP, Vinyl record album
Maybe the only 12" single we've ever seen from Ennio Morricone! Features two very groovy themes. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Paul Motian Band —
Psalm ... LP ECM, 1982. Near Mint- ...

One of the last great 70s soundtracks on Curtom Records – a smoking little set that pairs the music of Curtis Mayfield with the vocals of Mavis Staples! Curtis is very much in charge of the record from the start, and works in a hard-stepping and righteous mode that recalls his earlier work on the Staples' soundtrack for Let's Do It Again – no surprise, given that Piece Of The Action was the next installment in the successful series of films that starred Bill Cosby and Sidney Poitier! The sound here is nicely full, hitting that rich mid 70s Curtom mode that sounded so great on Leroy Hutson and Natural Four albums of the time – a slightly more sophisticated approach that mixed in a bit of strings with the heavier funk at the bottom. Titles include "Chocolate City", written by Curtis with Keni Burke and Henry Gibson, plus "Getting Deeper", "A Piece Of The Action", "Orientation", and "Of Whom Shall I Be Afraid". LP, Vinyl record album
Titles include "Knocked Down Made Small", "Bow Wow Wow Wow", "Man Vs The Empire Brain Building", "Zaz Turned Blue", and "Smile". LP, Vinyl record album
The great compilation of early 80s singles by Robert Wyatt – as timeless, inventive and awe inspiring as some of his best proper LPs – and essential Wyatt however you want to approach it! Titles include the original "Born Again Wyatt", but there's a number of pretty amazing cover's in the set, including Chic's "At Last I Am Free" and Ivor Cutler's "Grass" – plus "Caimanera", "Strange Fruit", "Stalingrad" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

ZZ Top —

Titles include their classic "Tube Snake Boogie" – plus "Ten Foot Pole", "Leila", "Don't Tease Me", "Heaven Hell Or Houston", "Groovy Little Hippie Pad", "Party On The Patio", "Pearl Necklace", "It's So Hard", and "I Wanna Drive You Home". LP, Vinyl record album

BALL —
Bird ... LP Shimmy Disc, 1988. Near Mint- ...
Out Of Stock
Surprisingly great quartet tracks from two cats we're normally used to hearing in a big band – Thad Jones on cornet and Mel Lewis on drums – joined by Harold Danko on piano and Rufus Reid on bass. Tracks are long, and titles include "But Not For Me", "Autumn Leaves", and "What Is This Thing Called Love". LP, Vinyl record album
A groundbreaking record from flautist Hubert Laws – a mixture of classical themes and jazz, handled with an airy CTI approach – and set to arrangements by Don Sebesky that are simply mindblowing! The album's a wonderful example of the way that CTI really pushed the boundaries of instrumental expression in the 70s – taking Laws wonderfully breathy work on flute, and mixing it with some well-crafted backings that also feature electric piano by Bob James, bass by Ron Carter, and percussion by Airto and Jack DeJohnette. The larger group is handled by Sebesky, who really brings some magic to the record – a sense of sound, space, and timing that's still a heck of a lot more mature and sophisticated than most instrumental recordings coming out today! Titles include "Syrinx", "Rite Of Spring", "Brandenburg Concerto No 3", and "Pavane". LP, Vinyl record album
