✨✧ Sarah VaughanAfter Hours (Columbia) ... LP
Columbia, Early 50s. Very Good- ... $6.99
The album that really put Sarah Vaughan on the map – a killer set that really showed how sultry jazz vocals could sound in the postwar years – never overtone, nor torchy-cliched – but right on the money, with a sense of grace and poise that few others can match – even after all these decades! Tracks include "Black Coffee", "After Hours", "Street Of Dreams", "My Reverie", "I Cried For You", "Deep Purple", and "Just Friends". LP, Vinyl record album
(6 eye pressing with deep groove. Cover has fully split top and bottom seams.)

✨✧ Sarah VaughanDreamy ... LP
Roulette, Early 60s. Sealed ... $3.99
A perfect title for a perfect album from Sarah Vaughan – one of those wonderful dates from the singer's second chapter of her career – a time when she was finding newly sophisticated ways to spin out her songs! The music here is arranged by Jimmy Jones – who makes things lush, but never too much so – this beautiful balance he brought to other records of the time, such as his work with Basie – in a way that has Vaughan very much out front in the mix, working her voice with effortless ease, announcing to the world that she's one of the all-time greats, but never has to hit anyone over the head to prove it! Harry Sweets Edison provides some great trumpet lines to underscore the jazz in the music – and titles include "Dreamy", "Hands Across The Table", "Moon Over Miami", "I'll Be Seeing You", "Star Eyes", "Trees", and "Crazy He Calls Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Mercury (Japan), 1967. Used ... $24.99
A pretty obscure Sarah Vaughn album – and a nice one! The album's got Sarah singing with arrangements by Hal Mooney, who'd done work for her before in a more standard way, and who here is opening up a bit, at times almost hitting a groovy late 60s mode. Players in the group include Bob James (who also arranged a few numbers), Phil Woods, Benny Golson, and Freddie Hubbard – and titles include "The Man That Got Away", "Alfie", "For Every Man There's A Woman", "Jim", and "My Man". Sarah VaughanNo Count Sarah ... LP
Mercury, 1958. Very Good+ ... $6.99
The title's a bit of a joke – because the record features a batch sidemen from the Count Basie band – Thad Jones, Joe Newman, Freddy Green, Billy Mitchell, Frank Foster, and others – all working with Sarah, but the Count's name is missing, due to contractual obligations! Despite that lack, though, the grooves are very much in the best Basie mode – full of soul and searing horn lines – at a level that makes the album one of Sarah's liveliest from the time! Players include Thad Jones and Joe Newman on trumpet, Al Grey on trombone, Frank Foster and Frank Wess on tenor, and Freddie Green on guitar – and Ronnell Bright handles the piano, instead of Basie. Titles include "Darn That Dream", "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", "Doodlin", "Just One Of Those Things", "No Count Blues", and "Missing You". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono black label deep groove pressing. Cover has a cut corner, some adhesive residue along the opening, and light wear.)

Sarah VaughanPop Artistry ... LP
Mercury, 1965. Sealed ... $11.99
A sweet little album that serves up exactly what it promises in the title – a set of 60s pop tunes, all reworked by the jazz vocal artistry of Sarah Vaughan! The set's one of the most upbeat and bouncy that Vaguhan cut during the decade – and although you might know some of the tunes from the hit versions on oldies stations, Sarah's takes on the tracks are completely unique – very personal and transformative, especially since she's stretching out a lot more vocally than the famous singers of the songs. Luchi De Jesus handled the arrangements – and titles include "Make It Easy On Yourself", "Yesterday", "Little Hands", "Waltz For Debbie", "First Thing Every Morning", "He Touched Me", and "I Know A Place". LP, Vinyl record album

Sarah's working here in an intimate group arranged by Ernie Wilkins, and featuring some sublime solo work from Clifford Brown, Paul Quinichette, and Herbie Mann – alongside rhythm from the trio of Jimmy Jones, Joe Benjamin, and Max Roach. Sarah's vocals are incredible – curving, turning, and lilting with a tremendous amount of jazz-based inflection – and titles include "Lullaby Of Birdland", "April In Paris", "September Song", "He's My Guy", and "I'm Glad There Is You". Sarah VaughanSarah Vaughan In Hi Fi ... LP
Columbia, 1955. Very Good ... $11.99
One of Sarah's few albums for Columbia – and quite possibly the best, thanks to some great small group backing, heard on 8 of the album's 12 tunes! The group's a really great one – with Miles Davis on trumpet, Benny Green on trombone, Buddy Johnson on tenor, Tony Scott on clarinet, Mundell Lowe on guitar, and Billy Taylor on piano – all of whom get some surprising solo space on the album, and make the record one of Sarah's best jazz outings of the 50s. The remaining tracks on the set have a lusher ballad style, but are still quite nice – and titles include "Mean To Me", "Goodnight My Love", "Can't Get Out Of This Mood", "East Of The Sun", "Pinky", "Ooh Whatcha Doin To Me", and "Come Rain Or Come Shine". One of Vaughan's nice jazz sides from the 50s on EmArcy, but cut with slightly larger backing, almost in the vein of some here concurrent pop oriented work at the Mercury parent label during the same time. Arrangements are by Hal Mooney, and Vaughan takes an approach that showcases how she garnered the titular nickname in great readings of a number of standards on this set. Titles include "Lush Life", "Only You Can Say", "The Boy Next Door", and "I'm The Girl". LP, Vinyl record album

Sarah VaughanTime In My Life ... LP
Mainstream, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $6.99
Sarah Vaughn's looking pretty groovy on the cover of this album, and she's sounding pretty groovy too – thanks to some sweet 70s backings from Ernie Wilkins! The style isn't exactly funky, but it's got some fully soulful sounds, and some great electric moments too – modes that almost feel more like some of the best Kudu Records vocal sets from the time, instead of the usual Mainstream Records groove. Sarah really fits well in this sort of setting – stretching out into groovier territory than before with the same sense of change that Ella Fitzgerald or Marlena Shaw were bringing to their music at the time. Players include Jerome Richardson on saxes, Buddy Childers on trumpet, Benny Powell on trombone, Jimmy Cobb on percussion, and Earl Palmer on drums – and titles include "Inner City Blues", "Magical Connection", "Universal Prisoner", "Tomorrow City", "That's The Way I've Always Heard It", "Imagine", "On Thinking It Over", and "If Not For You". Mercury, 1964. Very Good ... $6.99
One of Sarah Vaughan's first albums of Latin-tinged tracks – showing the roots of her interest in Brazilian music that would develop even more fully into the 70s. The record features a large group arranged and conducted by Frank Foster – with a host of jazz soloists, plus Latin percussion by the likes of Willie Bobo, Jose Mangual, and Willie Rodriguez. Titles include lively versions of "Jive Samba", "The Boy From Ipanema", "Mr Lucky", "Quiet Nights", and "Moment Of Truth". Tasty stuff – and very groovy! LP, Vinyl record album

Sarah Vaughan & Michel LegrandOrchestra Arranged & Conducted By Michel Legrand ... LP
Mainstream, 1972. Sealed Gatefold ... $7.99
A beautiful collaboration between Sarah Vaughan and Michel Legrand – and easily one of Sarah's greatest albums of the 70s! As he was doing with other singers at the time, Legrand helps Vaughan hit a new level of sophistication here – bringing in tunes that really get past simple pop and older standards, with adult themes supported by equally mature backings – filled with rich colors and complicated tones developed over Legrand's great work on film scores. Almost all tunes are originals by Michel – many pulled from his film work – and he also scored the arrangements here, working with the orchestra in a swirling blend of strings and jazz. Titles include "I Will Say Goodbye", "Summer Me Winter Me", "His Eyes Her Eyes", "Wave", "Blue Green Grey & Gone", "Pieces Of Dreams", "Hands Of Time", "The Summer Knows", and "Once You've Been In Love". A warm, wonderful set by Sarah Vaughan – and a later one, closing the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1971 – released for the first time ever! Sarah is backed for most of the set by the trio of Billy Mays on piano, Bob Magnusson on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums – with Sarah managing to both portray heavy emotion and mood and also an easygoing, playful charm – joking with the audience and obviously having a wonderful time. Very nice! Includes the Norman Granz intro, plus "I Remember You", "The Lamp Is Low", "'Round Midnight", "There Will Never Be Another You", "And I Love Him", "Scattin' The Blues", and "Tenderly" – plus a 14 plus minute jam with the Jazz At The Philharmonic All-Stars – Bill Harris, Roy Eldridge, Clark Terry, Eddie Lockjaw Davis, Benny Carter and others! ✨✧ Sarah VaughanVaughan With Voices ... LP
Mercury, 1963. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An unusual album for Sarah Vaughan, but a compelling one too – a set recorded in Copehagen with some Danish singers in the background – providing a pillowy cushion behind Sarah's lead, in ways that make for a wonderfully mellow record! Orchestrations are by Robert Farnon, who works well with the overseas voices in ways that are similar to his American work – and although the setting isn't as lean or groovy as some of Sarah's other Mercury work, it makes for a nice way of hearing the sadder tones in her style at the time – a bit like some of the bluer Roulette sides. Titles include "Blue Orchids", "Charade", "My Coloring Book", "Funny", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "How Beautiful Is Night", and "I'll Be Around". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sarah Vaughan & Her TrioSarah Vaughan At Mister Kelly's (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Mercury, 1957. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Sarah Vaughan's best albums from the 50s – a swinging live set caught at Chicago's Mister Kelly's night club – and recorded with very small combo backing! The album's a great contrast to some of Sarah's more fully arranged sets of the era – and it features piano from Jimmy Jones, bass from Richard Davis, and drums from Roy Haynes – all served up in a great blend of sensitive modes on the ballads, and more swinging styles on the upbeat numbers. There's a bit more of the latter, given the swinging feel of the set. The best part of this CD, though, is that it adds 11 extra tracks to the original album – for a whopping 20 tracks of beautiful live jazz vocals. Titles include "September In The Rain", "Alone", "Dancing In The Dark", "Lucky In Love", "Dream", "Willow Weep For Me", and "Just A Gigolo". CD

Birdland All StarsBirdland All Stars Live At Carnegie Hall ... CD
Roulette, 1954. Used 2 CDs ... $18.99
A smoking set of all-star performances – recorded at Carnegie Hall in 1954, and with a sense of tremendous talent that may well blow away some of the Jazz At The Philharmonic sets of the time! The material here is heavy on Count Basie performances – excellent material from that period when he was really hitting full power again on Verve – with strong solos from Frank Foster and Frank Wess on reeds, plus work from Joe Newman on trumpet! Lester Young's tenor also joins Basie's group at one point – and Sarah Vaughan sings with the group too – but the set also features some more Verve-like performances – from Charlie Parker on alto, and Billie Holiday on vocals, who gets almost one side of the record to herself. There's a huge amount of material on the double-length set – and titles include "My Funny Valentine", "Cool Blues", and "The Song Is You" by Charlie Parker; "Them There Eyes", "My Man", and "Lover Man" by Billie Holiday; "Saturday", "Time", "That Old Devil Moon", and "Don't Blame Me" by Sarah Vaughan; and "Lullaby Of Birdland", "Sure Thing", "Perdido", "Blues Backstage", and "You For Me" by Count Basie. A really cool set that looks at the rise of late 50s beatnik culture from a variety of different styles – not just the jazz and poetry that marked that scene's biggest contribution to music – but also the wealth of modes that inspired those years too! The 3CD package features a stunning 57 titles in all – and begins in the late 30s with hard-edged small combo work and jive-heavy vocal tracks – then runs past WWII to include some bebop, R&B, and very cool vocal numbers – before moving into Greenwich Village classic sounds in a mix of spoken word, jazz poetry, and even a bit of folk! The Savoy jazz catalog gets the remix tradition – following nicely in the mode of similar projects on Verve or Blue Note! The best numbers actually preserve some sense of jazz soloing – an approach that we like better than other too-abstract remakes of older jazz on the market – and titles include "Moose The Mooche (Quantic rmx)" by Charlie Parker, "Night In Tunisia (DJ Jazzy Jeff rmx)" by Duke Jordan, "Lover Man (King Britt's Speakeasy mix)" by Dizzy Gillespie with Sarah Vaughan, "Minor Vamp (Basement Boys 12")" by Curtis Fuller, "Yardbird Suite (St Etienne mix)" by Herbie Mann, "Bohemia After Dark (Diamond D rmx)" by Cannonball Adderley, "Caravan (DJ Smashish rmx)" by Dizzy Gillespie, and "Movin Nicely (Eclipse rmx)" by Modern Jazz Quartet.
