A fantastic soundtrack from the great Francis Lai! The record is one of his most unusual – and features a number of short songs that focus on spare keyboard work, either on organ, piano, or electric piano, and with some cool groovy instrumentation, and a bit of light strings and woodwinds. The slow sensuous themes are among some of the best Lai instrumental work we've ever heard – and the soundtrack is a real gem from one of the best points in his career. The set kicks off with the vocal number "Le Passager De La Pluie", sung by the lovely Severine, and includes the cuts "Theme Des Voitures", "L'Arrestation", "Theme Dobbs", "Souvenir De Melancolie", "Le Viol", and "Theme Bestial". A pair of Purple Sage classics – back to back on in a single set! First up is the classic debut of New Riders Of The Purple Sage – one of the leading lights of the new acoustic scene in the Bay Area after the shaggier, more electric years of the Haight Street scene! Jerry Garcia plays pedal steel and banjo on the record, and at some level these guys definitely owe a bit to some of Jerry's more acoustic explorations – especially on records to come – but they've also got their own brand of hippie country that's mighty nice, and which has a much more easygoing, less-jamming vibe than some of the headier San Francisco groups of the period. The set also features more guest work from Mickey Hart and Commander Cody – and titles include "Portland Woman", "Garden Of Eden", "Whatcha Gonna Do", "Glendale Train", "Dirty Business", "Louisiana Lady", and "All I Ever Wanted". Powerglide is a set that has the New Riders Of The Purple Sage expanding their sound a bit – moving past the acoustic trio at the core to add in more pedal steel and even a bit of dobro – all at a level that seems to further their commitment to country-influenced Bay Area acoustic grooves! As before, Jerry Garcia makes a few appearances on the set, but it's clear that the group don't even need his help to sound great – working with vocals that are more harmonic and confident than before, and with songs that also really show them growing as tunesmiths too. The set features the original cuts "Sweet Lovin One", "Rainbow", "California Day", "Contract", and "Runnin Back To You" – plus a great cover of "Dim Lights Thick Smoke & Loud Loud Music". CD

Hardly the gospel of your father's generation – and hardly even the gospel of previous Numero releases either – as the set's a wonderfully offbeat batch of tracks that definitely lives up to the "apocryphal" in the title! Production sounds and musical styles go way past the mainstream – and lots of these numbers feel like secular soul from the definite left end of the spectrum in the 70s – especially the mellower cuts, which have a trippy quality that comes from weird instrumentation and unusual studio work – often matched by vocal presentation that's anything but spiritual, and which feels more like Darondo overall! These tunes are a real discovery – a deeper level of unusual gospel recordings than even the funk and or soul sides featured on other compilations – all pulled from the hinterland of self-released albums and singles from back in the day. As usual, Numero's done as great of job with the notes and packaging as they have with the music – really telling the full tale of this unusual stream of music – in a smoking set that features "That's All I Need" by Sensational Saints, "A Message Especially From God" by Robert Vanderbilt & The Foundation Of Souls, "Come Holy Spirit" by God's Band, "Faith" by Soul Superiors, "Can't Run This Race Alone" by Flying Eagles Gospel Singers, "Searching For The Truth" by Dwain Vinyard, "Get Involved" by Jonah Thompson, and "I Hear You Calling" by Francis Reneau & The Mission Singers. The choice of the lead characters is a bit odd – as Mel Torme plays Porgy and Francis Faye plays Bess – but both singers are actually pretty darn great for the set, and really bring a lot out of the tunes. Plus, the other artists on the set really keep things interesting – as the collection features vocal performances by Johnny Hartman, Frank Rosolino, Betty Roche, Bob Dorough, and Sallie Blair. Plus, the whole thing's presented as Gershwin wrote it – complete with narration by Al Jazzbo Collins, and a number of strong instrumental passages. Music is performed by groups led by Russ Garcia, Duke Ellington, Pat Moran, and Stan Levy – and players are an array of the best of both the New York and LA scenes at the time! There's a nice variation here to the previous album from Francisco Mela with this title – and that difference is pianist Cooper-Moore, who steps into the place that Matthew Shipp held in the previous trio – and brings all sorts of wonderful sounds and flavors into play! Mela's a great leader for the set – as his approach to the drums is as open and elliptical as the bass of William Parker and the piano of Cooper-Moore – who really has a way of circling around these sonic passages in a great way – almost slowly winding up, and pulling Parker and Mela along with him – then generating sparks that allows all three players to bristle with energy in all sorts of different directions. The set features two long tracks – "Musical Literacy" and "Mental Scenario". CD

A beautiful issue of Ugly Things – one of the preeminent journals covering timelessly groovy sounds! Twin pillars of the 60s English scene are on the cover – The Creation and The Artwoods – with a great look at the early years of the former, circa 1966, and an excellent, far-reaching interview with guitarist Derek Griffiths of the latter by publisher/editor Mike Stax. Also includes pieces on the CA Quintet, Fred Neil, The Belles, Stonewall, The Yardbirds in Cyril Jordan's San Francisco Beat and lots more. As usual, so much of the writing feels more like passages of a book than mere magazine features, as does the nearly 150-page all killer, no filler length of the issue! Magazine

Incredible soundtrack work! You may know nothing about Francois De Roubaix, and the films these tracks are from are even more obscure – but trust us, this is a great set of tracks! De Roubaix follows in a tradition of strange baroque arrangements that's vaguely similar to early work by Michel Colombier, with touches of romanticism from Francis Lai – but it's got a strange twist that's all its own. These tracks feature odd bits of electronics, weird guitar parts, haunting woodwind passages, jaunty rhythms, strange vocals – and almost always, a commitment to keen melody and inventive instrumentation. A few cuts are a bit cheesy, but others are jaw-droppingly fresh – and are some of the best soundtrack work we've been exposed to in a long time. LP, Vinyl record album

Very cool work from Peggy Lee – mostly with arrangements by Benny Golson, and done in a really wonderful style for the 70s! The work's every bit as mature as her other Capitol sides from the time, but it's also got a bit more confidence too – a style that somehow offsets the melancholy of these years with a subtle positive sensibility too, possibly from Golson's presence. Titles include a great version of "Passenger Of The Rain" – the title track to Francis Lai's soundtrack for Le Passager De La Pluie – and other tracks include "Make It With You", "The Long & Winding Road", "That's What Living is All About", "You'll Remember Me", "I've Never Been So Happy In My Life", and "One More Ride On The Merry Go Round".
