Alex Malheiros & Banda Utopia with Sabrina MalheirWave ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2009. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
Beautiful grooves from Alex Malheiros – best known for his bass work in Azymuth, but stepping out here in a warm and wonderful set of his own! The groove here really takes us back to the sunny, soulful fusion we first loved when Azymuth hit the scene in the 70s – and Malheiros' guidance of the groove is really felt strongly in the album's warm-rolling basslines – a beautiful complement to a lineup that also includes Fender Rhodes, tenor, soprano sax, flute, trumpet, and trombone – plus a bit of occasional vocals from Sabrina Malheiros! Production is wonderful – handled by Daniel Maunick with some of the warmth of his Incognito work – and IG Culture comes in at the end to remix four of the album's tracks – almost creating a mini-modern suite to complement to the core 70s vibe of the record. Titles include "The Wave", "Corpo", "Copa A Noite", "Solar", "Sem Pressa", "Baixo Partido", "Serenity", "Uno Esta", and "4 Eyed Viper" – plus remixes of "The Wave" and "Uno Esta", the latter of which is a version of the Bobbi Humphrey classic! Funk Night, 2023. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
Soul singer Marietta Smith steps out with a gentle glide over the funky stepping rhythms of "Tumblin Down" – really helping open up the motion of the tune as she works with a very distinct vocal approach! The flipside's an instrumental, "Return Of The Soul Sabre" – one that has the group really kicking it with great funky drums, a catchy organ line, and some cool spacey touches on the guitar that make the whole thing sound spacey and spooky – but funky too! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Sabrina MalheirosDreaming ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2011. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Always-lovely work from Sabrina Malheiros – serving up a sublime blend of Brazilian roots and soulful overtones – a style that's easily made her one of the best artists on the Far Out label over the years! Sabrina's got a family lineage that traces back to Azymuth – and the music here has the similar blend of fusion instrumentation, earthy Brazilian percussion, and soaring American soul that you'll find in the best classics by that group – all with the added special spark that comes from her sweet vocals too! Production and arrangements are by Daniel Venom Maunick, who brings in a slight dose of Incognito soul too – really making for a record that's quite possibly the best we've heard from Sabrina so far – and that's saying a heck of a lot. Titles include "Lirio De Venus", "Bobeira", "Opara", "Candeia", "Fragil", "Can't Hide Love", "Primeira", and "Paranoia". CD

Far Out (UK), 2006. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Nicola Conte, we love you – and if we ever needed a reason why, this single sure is proof! Sabrina's one of the better modern bossa divas around – really classic in approach, but with a great energy for the dancefloor – and here, she gets a Schema-styled taken courtesy of Conte – who kicks in a snare-heavy groove that really snaps the tune along wonderfully – jazzing up Sabrina's take of the famous "Terra De Ninguem", and almost making the whole thing come off like an Elis Regina classic from the 60s! A real bossa dancefloor gem – and one of our favorite singles on Far Out to date! 12-inch, Vinyl record

P-Vine (Japan), 2024. New Copy ... $19.99 24.99
A great soul set from the Italian scene – mellow-stepping and easygoing, with a gentle groove that really makes the whole thing sparkle! The singer Sabreetha Vee has a great style – slightly accented, which gives her approach a quality that's a bit like that of Sade on some cuts – maybe more like Corinne Drewery at others – and the grooves are served up by the Lombaro Brothers, who have a way of taking American roots filtered through a UK soul approach from later generations – which creates this classic sound that nicely spans decades! Titles include "So Strong", "Summer Memories", "Shooting Star", "Like Glue", "My Time", "Everything Is Alright", and "Nobody Like You". CD

Friends From RioFriends From Rio 2014 ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2014. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
One of the best records in years from the mighty Far Out label – and a set that really takes the imprint back to its roots! The name of the record echoes the first Friends From Rio session that launched Far Out almost two decades ago – and like that classic, this one's a collaborative effort between a range of Brazilian and British talents – served up in a style that bridges the gap between older bossa and more contemporary modes! The music is perfect from the ground up – not a cheesy bossa remix project, but a true blend of all the best elements, served up in a rich new style. The project gets key Incognito-style help from Daniel "Venom" Maunick, and a real Azymuth pedigree from Alex Malheiros – and the whole thing features a great range of different singers, including Hyldon, Robertinho Silva, Aleh Ferreira, Ivan Matheus, Denise Pinaud, Sabrina Malheiros, and Carlos Dafe – each wrapped up in a sweet blend of Fender Rhodes, organ, riffing guitar, and sweet jazzy horns. Titles include "So Resta A Porta Se Abrir", "Mas Que Nada", "Garota", "Aguai", "Casino Bangu", "Batucada Bidu", "Anthemia", "Leita De Pedra", and "Mulher Malagueta". CD

IngramThat's All! ... LP
H&L, 1977. Near Mint- ... $29.99
The Ingram Family tighten things up nicely with this follow-up to their first funky album – and they get a slicker sound that points the way towards their excellent modern soul sides of the 80s. Tracks are written by James, William, Butch, and John – and although the album was excecutive produced by the H(ugo) & L(uigi) Records team, the Ingrams handled most of the production and arrangements, and give the record a much more sophisticated sound than other work on the label. Filled with loads of great moments that bridge the gap between 70s harmony soul and modern 80s groove. Titles include the moogy space soul classic "I Don't Want To Be Alone", plus "Mi Sabrina Tequana", "I Just Wanna Testify", "Music Has The Power", "Get Your Stuff Off", and "That's All". ✨✧ Sean KhanMuriel ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2015. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
An insanely wonderful set from Sean Khan – maybe the greatest music he's done since his early classics with the SK Radicals! This album really takes us back to a time when music from London was completely fresh and exciting, and cosmically soulful, too – and Sean's got help from some great singers on the record who also date from that era – including the mighty Omar, plus Sabrina Malheiros, and vocalist Heidi Vogel of Cinematic Orchestra! All three of these artists really flesh out the sound of the record – and make it every bit as much of a soul record as a set that's awash in all the great reed touches and jazzy bits we'd expect from Sean. Andy Noble's also on the record, playing some wonderfully warm piano lines – and the overall instrumentation has more acoustic elements than before, which makes for a very righteous vibe throughout! Titles include "Dance For Little Emily", "Muriel", "Samba Para Florence", "Sister Soul", "What Has Jazz Become", "Trane's Shadow", "Don't Let The Sun Go Down", and "Fire Within" – plus bonus remix tracks "Don't Let The Sun Go Down (4Hero rmx)", "Samba Para Florence (Henry Wu rmx)", and "Things To Say (Ben Hauke rmx)". Love SculptureForms & Feelings ... LP
Parrot, 1969. Very Good+ ... $13.99
Wonderful work from Love Sculpture – a heavy British trio from the end of the 60s – and one that features a young Dave Edmunds on guitar! There's a slight bluesy undercurrent in Dave's style, but the music also has that tightly compressed sound that would emerge more strongly during his hit solo years – yet which is presented here with some very nice rough edges. Songwriting is especially great – a fresh approach to territory that was beginning to sound a bit stale in the hands of some of the group's contemporaries – presented here with a clean, lean sound that's almost a precursor to power pop at points, yet which still has a heavier late 60s rock feel. Titles include "In The Land Of The Few", "Seagull", "People People", "Mars", "Sabre Dance", "Farandole", and "You Can't Catch Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Far Out (UK), 2021. New Copy ... $9.99 16.99
Fantastic futuristic fusion from Alex Malheiros – best known as the bassist in Azymuth, but equally great here on his own – and in a completely different sort of way! The set's got heavy contributions from keyboardist Daniel Maunick, of Incognito fame – but the record's definitely got that well-crafted blend of jazz funk and Brazilian rhythms you'd know from Alex's legacy, but maybe tuned a bit more towards a 21st Century sort of groove – the right London touches in all the right places, in the best tradition of the Far Out label! Sabrina Malheiros sings on a few cuts, but most numbers are instrumental – and titles include "Retrato", "The Razor's Edge", "Telegramas Para Arp", "O Temporal", "Kuarup", "Alto Verao", and "Requiem For A Storm". RCA, 1956. Used ... $9.99
A Cuban classic from Orquesta Aragon – recorded back in the days when US labels like RCA still had access to music being recorded in Havana! The style here is very much in keeping with the cha cha cha in the title – but it's also very much the Cuban variation, with a slightly more subtle, lyrical approach to the music – especially compared with some of the New York modes of the time. Instrumentation includes flue, violins, piano, bass, and percussion – and vocals are by Pepe Olmo and Fernando Alvarez. Titles include "Los Fantasmas", "Sabrosona", "Calculadora", "El Bodeguero", "Silencio", and "Senor Juez". CD

Lots of funky drums here – serevd up by a British combo who keep things nice and lean, yet find a way to add in all these cool spaced-out touches to their music! The keyboards come in with some cool spacey bits all around the edges – and most tracks are instrumental, which allows for all sorts of cool interplay in the arrangements – which step back for a more classic soul-styled approach on the few vocal cuts - which include appearances from Marietta Smith and Anice Ossoulian. There's some nice vibes and tenor in the mix too – and titles include "Suns Of Marvin", "Heavy Bop", "Return Of The Soul Sabre", "Live Terminals", "Hush Mo", and "Black Candle". The great Lalo Schifrin plays piano and leads a crack group of studio players through some larger orchestral material with a nice jazzy feel! The overall approach is similar to Lalo's classic 60s soundtrack work – with nice solos arching out over sweeping strings and orchestral passages, and all tracks written with a good deal of punch, plus lots of little Latiny influences. Easily one of his most perfectly conceived albums of the 60s – and pretty darn tough to find. Tracks are long and titles include "El Salon Mexico", "New Fantasy", "Sabre Dance", and "Prelude #2". There's a bit of echo in the recording quality here – so that even when Tapscott's notes are spare, they still ring out with a good sense of presence – stating their case simply, but with great effectiveness – as Horace makes his way through a set of original tracks, plus a few well-chosen numbers by other jazz artists. Far Out (UK), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The deepest record we've heard so far from London's Sean Khan – and that's saying a lot, as we really loved his previous albums! Sean got his start on the broken beat scene a number of years back, and has slowly been evolving into more of a jazz-based artist – which he hits fantastically here in the company of the legendary Hermeto Pascoal, who plays Fender Rhodes and melodica on the record too! But honestly, even without Hermeto, Sean's pretty fantastic on his own – as his alto sax lines have this beautifully sharp edge, as does his work on flute and soprano – these soulful currents that almost rival recent work by Nat Birchall and some of his contemporaries. Other players include Ivan Conti on drums and Jim Mullin on electric guitar – and Heidi Vogel sings on two tracks, and Sabrina Mahleiros on one more. Titles include "Moment Of Collapse", "Waltz For Hermeto", "Palmares Fantasy", "Montreux", "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser", "The Blonde", and "The Conversation". CD

The set was produced by Skip Scarborough, and has that great bubbling, stepping, soulful groove that was Scarborough's best contribution to jazz funk – a trademark groove that was every bit as important to the 70s as the work of Bob James or Larry Mizell! Summers' work on congas and percussion is excellent and the players are totally top shelf – the core group features drums by Alphonse Mouzon, bass by Paul Jackson, and keyboards by Scarborough – and vocalists on the set include Dianne Reeves, Mikki Morris, and Charles Meeks. Yet the vibe here is every bit as great as any of those albums – a rock-solid interpretation of the best salsa modes of the time, but in a way that's nicely fresh, compared to some of the bigger American Latin labels – maybe a bit more playful in approach, with plenty of lively numbers throughout. The Beasties' peak-era, retro-style instrumentals LP! Even at their weakest vocal moments, we've always dug the Beastie Boys' firm commitment to funky instrumental backing – their albums are filled with lots of nice interludes, instrumentals, and backing grooves – but they often seemed to get buried amidst all the bugged out vocals. The record kind of has the vibe of a lost jazz organ session, with lots of weird twists and turns thrown in, and all the better thanks to Money Mark, pretty much a 4th Beastie here! Titles include "Drum Suite", "Come Into My Life", "People Know", "Just A Matter Of Time", "No One", "Check It Out", and "Que Sabroso". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Beastie BoysIn Sound From Way Out! ... LP
Grand Royal/Universal, 1996/1998. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A cool bit of instrumental funk with a very classic production feel. Every track's a winner, and the titles include "Ricky's Theme", "Groove Holmes", "Sabrosa", "In 3's", "Transitions", "Bobo On the Corner", and "Shambala". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Kero OneEarly Believers ... LP
Plug Research/P-Vine (Japan), 2009. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A classic from the Bay Area scene – damn soulful hip hop from Kero One, an artist who's equally great in the studio as a producer! There's nothing forced or overdone here – and although the record's hip hop, there's plenty to appeal to the neo soul crowd as well – well-delivered rhymes from Kero, almost with the cadence of sung vocals – presented with live instrumentation that really enforces the warm soul of the set – especially when guitarist Vince Czekus lays down some great 70s-styled lines! Kero's definitely in the lead, but there's some nicely collaborative moments on the set too – thanks to appearances from Ohmega Watts, Tuomo, and Ben Westbeech. Titles include "Welcome To The Bay", "When The Sunshine Comes", "Goodbye Forever", "Keep Pushin", "Let's Just Be Friends", "Love & Happiness", "Bossa Soundcheck", "A Song For Sabrina", "I Never Thought That We", and "On & On".
