An excellent batch of rare material by vocalist Johnny Hartman, and a very strong set of tracks that shows a side of his work that's often ignored! However, we really dig the side that's exposed on this CD – the shorter, livelier, more uptempo jazz numbers, done with a swing that you don't normally get with Johnny, and proof that he really was a tremendously versatile singer. An excellent CD reworking of the original Mobley hardbop classic, and one that restores a number of tracks that were originally recorded for the album's session, but which showed up on other Blue Note albums. The whole thing's got 8 cuts in all, some of which didn't appear on the orignal album, and all of which are killer modal hardbop numbers, of the sort that Mobley was perfecting during this key point in his career. Lee Morgan's on trumpet, and pianist Andrew Hill makes a rare "straight" appearance on the album. A really fantastic debut from Chicago soul singer Kaina Castillo – an artist who may well become huge in years to come, given the strength of this initial album! There's a really special vibe going on here – as Kaina's not afraid to put herself or her feelings on the line, but also not in a way that's ever too overwrought – almost as if she's sharing them with us on a personal level, but wrapped up in these seductive soul vocals that have a much more subtle sort of power. All the material is original, but there's one track on here that's an older Syreeta classic – and that relationship may well be a good way to describe the uniqueness of Kaina too.
