✨✧ Mighty RyedersHelp Us Spread The Message ... CD
Luv N' Haight, 1978. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A funky treasure from the 70s – a record that hardly made waves at the time, but which has lived on strongly for years – thanks to a great sample history and key interest from generations of groove diggers! Mighty Ryeders have a sound that's clearly influenced by Earth Wind & Fire – funk with a good dose of jazz, often done with some righteous undercurrents in the lyrics – but their groove is also a bit more rough-edged too, sharing some funky 45-levels of excitement, and showing a great ear for sharply jazzy changes! This last aspect has really helped the group's sound stay fresh over the years – and the album's a treasure trove of killer cuts – from the famous "Evil Vibrations", right on down through other gems like "The Mighty Ryeders", "Let There Be Peace", "Lovely", "Help Us Spread The Message", "Fly Away With Me", "Sar Children", and "I've Really Got The Feeling". ✨✧ VariousSon Cubano NYC – Cuban Roots New York Spices 1972 to 1982 ... LP
Honest Jons (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The rebirth of the Afro-Cuban groove on the New York scene of the 70s – great recordings in the "new traditionalist" sound of the time! After the boom of the Latin Soul sound of the late 60s, and the rise of salsa in the early 70s, there was also a "back to basics" movement within the players of the New York Latin community – a shift that stripped down the sound, reintroduced traditional instrumentation, and worked in rhythms that might have been used on older sessions, but which were slightly updated for the newer recordings. The work of that period, although strong, has often been overlooked in favor of some of the flashier sounds of the scene – and this set wonderfully corrects that fault by bringing together a great sampling of work from the traditional spectrum of the Salsoul and SAR record labels, along with the kind of notes and commitment to quality that makes the Honest Jon's reissues so great! Titles include "Son Sabroson" by Rey Roig, "Chuchillo Para La Pina Cubana" by Charlie Rodriguez, "Chocolate En C7" and "Trumpet En Montuno" by Chocolate, "Oriente" and "Tiene Sabor" by Henry Fiol, "Yo Perdi El Corazon" by Lita Branda, "Camina Y Ven Pa La Loma" by Roberto Torres, "Celosa" by Angelo Y Su Conjunto Modelo, and "Los Dos Hermanos" by Los Jimaguas. Art Ensemble Of ChicagoWe Are On The Edge – 50th Anniversary Celebration ... CD
PI Recordings, 2019. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99 22.98
A tremendous tribute to the legendary Art Ensemble Of Chicago – a group who work here with only two of their surviving members, but with help from a constellation of jazz musicians inspired by their music! The group here is large, and includes AACM members and other younger talents – a fantastic lineup that mixes the core work of Famadou Don Moye on drums and percussion, and Roscoe Mitchell on reeds with work from Nicole Mitchell on flutes, Hugh Ragin and Fred Berry on trumpets, Tomeka Reid on cello, Jaribu Shahid and Junius Paul on basses, Enoch Williams and Titos Sompa on percussion, and Christina Wheeler on voice and a range of unusual electronic instruments! There's a very ambitious feel to the music – like some of Roscoe Mitchell's larger form creations, but with more of a spiritual jazz current that comes from the whole ensemble – and from vocal contributions from Moore Mother and Rodolfo Cordova Lebron. The double-length set features a studio album and a live album by the expanded group – and titles include "Bell Song", "We Are On The Edge", "Chi Congo 50", "Fanfare & Bell", "Odwalla/The Theme", "Tutankhamun", "Mama Koko", "Saturday Morning", and "Villa Tiamo". Polydor, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
James Brown gets even better than before – working here in the setting of a blacksploitation soundtracks – which makes the album a doubly funky outing from the 70s! James is a master throughout – beating Isaac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield at their own games – as he works with super-tight work from the JBs, plus a bit of vocals from Lyn Collins – all in a massive batch of tracks that further expand his funky palette! Unlike other blacksploitation soundtracks, which usually have one or two key funky tunes, this one's almost entirely overflowing with gems – including Lyn Collins on a version of "Mama Feelgood" that's worth the price of the record alone! The whole thing's great, though – and titles include the classic "Down & Out in New York City", plus "Blind Man Can See It", "Sportin' Life", "The Boss", "Dirty Harri", and "Chase". John CarpenterFog (40th Anniversary 180 gram colored vinyl pressing –with 12-page booklet) ... LP
Waxwork, 1981. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Wonderful sounds from the great John Carpenter – one of those records that reminds us that his music is often just as important as the images he puts on the screen! Carpenter's music for The Fog follows nicely in his work for other films – particularly Halloween – in that it's got this slow-building style that often makes great use of keyboards – often used sparely, with a really spooky sort of energy – and even more space, and at slower speed than his other horror soundtracks! The style really fits the "fog" theme of the film! Includes a bonus record of the original movie cues which have never been made available on vinyl before. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Don CherryComplete Communion (75th anniversary edition) ... LP
Blue Note, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 19.99
Arguably the best of Cherry's albums for Blue Note – and a real masterpiece of soulful avant playing! The group features Cherry on cornet, Gato Barbieri on tenor (and he's incredible, by the way!), Henry Grimes on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums. Grimes and Blackwell are more than just timekeepers – and deliver a lot of the melody of the session, yet still never lose their sense of swing. Barbieri's fragile raw tone proves to be a good one to work with Cherry, even if there are a few touches of Ornette in his playing. The album's divided up into 2 long suites – "Complete Communion" and "Elephantasy" – both of which are excellent. A real treat – with no sloppiness, lots of fresh ideas, and a good sense of both freedom and control! LP, Vinyl record album

John ColtraneGiant Steps (2CD 60th Anniversary Edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic, 1959. New Copy 2CD ... $23.99 24.99
A true giant step for John Coltrane – and one of the first albums to really showcase his talent as a writer – and his amazing ability for penning some of the most soulful, spiritual themes in jazz! Apart from the well-known title cut, the record's filled with other Coltrane classics – key early readings of "Naima", "Cousin Mary", "Mr PC", "Spiral", and "Syeeda's Song Flute" – all showing a new sense of timing, phrasing, and pacing in jazz – one that would go on to have a huge impact on players in the 70s generation! The group here is relatively straight – Tommy Flanagan or Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – but the players have never sounded better, and really match Coltrane's sense of power and imagination on these legendary tracks! Great 2CD version – with a completely new mastering of the record, bonus notes, and a full set of unreleased outtakes and alternates – including "Naima (alt)", "Like Sonny (alt)", "Count Down (alt)", "Syeeda's Song Flute (alt)", "Giant Steps (incomplete alt take 1)", and two more takes of "Giant Steps". Lovely stuff! The work of singer Cesara Evoria is remixed by a host of modern club talents – no surprise, as her best tracks of the past few years have been getting plenty of action on the 12" front – taking her from the world music scene into the clubs, with very surprising results! The record is really pretty darn wonderful overall – appealing to fans of a modern groove, but touched with all the depth, soul, and history of Cesara's fantastic voice. Titles include "Angola" remixed by Pepe Braddock, "Miss Perfumado" remixed by 4 Hero, "Nutridinha" remixed by Kerri Chandler, "Besame Mucho" remixed by Senor Coconut, "Angola" remixed by Carl Craig, "Negue" remixed by Chris Prolific, "Sangue De Beironia" remixed by Francois K, and "Bondade E Maldade" remixed by Osunlade. Sarah Webster FabioSoul Ain't – Soul Is ... CD
Folkways, 1973. Used ... $5.99
A hard biting album of hip poetry from the great Sarah Webster Fabio! The title cut is a brutal attack on the free use of the word soul by black musicians – and Sarah delivers the words over spare conga backing by family member Cyril Leslie Fabio II. Cyril shows up on one other track – "Nina Giving Mr Backlash The Blues" – but most of the record features Sarah reading solo, without the musical accompaniment of her other Folkways album. The record's still a great one, though, as Sarah's voice and writing is always extremely compelling – without the cliches of some of her protest poetry contemporaries, and with an approach that's always smart and literate, yet still pretty spare and rhythmic. Titles include "Black World", "Hurt Of It All", "Bronzeville Breakthrough", and "For My People, A Jubilee". CD

Caesar FrazierHail Caesar!/'75 ... CD
Eastbound/Ace (UK), 1972/1975. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
2 killers from organist Caesar Frazier – back to back on one CD! Hail Ceasar is a monster bit of funky jazz – filled with long tracks that all jam mightily, all at a level that matches or tops the best work coming out of Prestige or Blue Note Records at the time! The set is one of the rare few on the Eastbound jazz subsidiary of Detroit soul powerhouse Westbound Records – and it's the first to feature organist Ceasar Frazier as a leader – really grooving hard here with a Prestige-styled combo that includes Idris Muhammad on funky drums, Melvin Sparks on heavy guitar, and Houston Person on soulful sax – all produced with a gritty gritty edge by the legendary Bob Porter! The whole album's great – filled with incredible cuts that include a version of "Hicky-Burr", the first Bill Cosby theme – plus the tracks "Make It With You", "Running Away", "Hail Ceasar!", and "See-F". Ceasar Frazier 75 is a tightly grooving set that expands his sound a bit from the first! All the best elements are still in place here – including funky organ from Ceasar, production from jazz funk maestro Bob Porter, and a hip range of players that includes Horace Ott, Wilbur Bascomb, and Bernard Purdie. But the overall sound is somewhat shifted too – brought more into the tightly jamming jazz funk mode of the mid 70s – a bit richer and fuller overall, yet never in a way that's slick or sloppy – just more like some of the best later sides on Prestige or Fantasy from the same stretch. The record features a crazy version of the "Mighty Mouse Theme", a mellow take on the Isley's "Summer Breeze", Stevie Wonder's great "Living For The City", and the original "Funk It Down". CD

✨✧ Robert GlasperDouble Booked (75th anniversary edition) ... LP
Blue Note, 2009. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
Great work from Robert Glasper – one of our favorite new artists on Blue Note in years – a hell of a great piano player, with a fluid groove that just gets better and better with each new record! Glasper has a way of warming us up right away – sliding into a compelling piano line that holds us rapt, and really takes us on a journey – a bit like the best work of Bheki Mseleku back in the 90s, but with an undercurrent of funkier New York modes too! Half the record features Robert in trio format – playing both acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes – and the rest of the set moves into "experiment" tracks that bring in Casey Benjamin on saxes, plus some electric bass, and very funky drums from Chris Dave, who also plays on the trio numbers. Mos Def makes a vocal appearance on one track, and Bilal appears on two more – but our favorite grooves are always from Glasper's keyboards, especially his acoustic piano. Titles include "Downtime", "59 South", "Butterfly", "4Eva", "No Worries", "Yes I'm Country", and "Open Mind". LP, Vinyl record album

Stefon HarrisBlack Action Figure (75th anniversary edition) ... LP
Blue Note, 1999. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $14.99 26.99
Brilliant work from Stefon Harris – one of the boldest voices on vibes of his generation– with a sound that resonates strongly with older work by Bobby Hutcherson and Walt Dickerson! Like both of those players, Harris has a way of approaching the vibes that is freshly modern, yet also strongly rhythmic and swinging – a groove that comes out even on the more experimental numbers in the set, and which makes the album resonate with colors and tones that few others on the instrument can match. The overall sound here is marked by Greg Osby's presence in the group and his production – but thankfully, those elements are a bit underplayed – and other players on the record include Steve Turre on trombone and Jason Moran on piano. Titles include "Feline Blues", "There Is No Greater Love", "Of Things To Come", "Bass Vibes", "Collage", "The Alchemist", "Chorale", "Faded Beauty", and "After The Day Is Done". Astral Spirits, 2020. New Copy 2LP ... $22.99
A beautiful extended composition for the coronavirus generation – a piece written for cello and percussion in a very minimal way that builds and shifts over time – all to examine the "care and empathy that emerge when two lives share space"! That care is very clear here – as the work is performed by the duo Two-Way Street – which features Ashlee Booth on cello and Adam Lion on percussion – players who certainly have a lot of empathy for each others' strengths, and find them easily as they move between differing passages over the course of the 90 minute performance! The cello has a surprising array of sounds here – emerging as the percussion modes shift – and the whole thing proceeds with a sense of space and slow shift that would have made the early minimalists proud. Trio/Solid (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... About January 20, 2021
A beautiful little record, with some of the slight exotic touches you might expect from the title – as the group features Kazumi Watanabe on acoustic and electric guitar, and Yuji Imamura on percussion – both musicians who help open up the sound of the trio core into much warmer territory! Masaru Imada plays piano with a sharply sparkling tone, but also a strong sense of rhythm – one that's often amplified by the excellent bass work of Mitsuaki Furuno, who may well be the real star of the set – given his subtle talent for moving things forward. Shinji Mori plays drums – and titles include "Gulf Stream", "Andalusian Breeze", "Samba Del Centauro", "Nowin", and "Touch & Go". CD features a bonus track – a radio edit of "Andalusian Breeze". CD

Masaru ImadaOne For Duke ... CD
Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... About January 20, 2021
The album's dedicated to Duke Ellington, and it features Duke Ellington tunes – but overall the set is a very personal moment from pianist Masaru Imada – maybe one of his strongest dates of the 70s! The music opens up with that beautifully creative Japanese piano trio approach of the 70s – lots of new ideas and new styles brimming forth throughout, but always in a way that's respectful of tradition while pushing things forward – swinging back to familiar modes one minute, then soaring forth with a personal spirit the next. Masaru's trio-mates here are a great match – the excellent Isoo Fukui on bass and Tetsujiro Obara on drums – on titles that include "Stevie", "Satin Doll", and "Sophisticated Lady" – plus the Imada originals "Blue Rain" and "One For Duke". Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... About December 10, 2020 (delayed)
Really lovely piano work from Masaru Imada – a player who's a bit gentler than some of his Japanese contemporaries of the early 70s, but who also works with this wonderfully lyrical tone! Imada does a great job of balancing a sense of flow with a punctuated approach to the keys – never overdone, and often with this spacious sensibility – but more pointed than a Bill Evans style as well. The first half of the album is solo material, and the second features a trio – bass is by Isoo Fukui and drums are by Mashiko Ozu – both players who step into Imada's world in a way that's subtle, but extremely effective. Titles include "Poppy", "Sea Weeds", "Ascent", "Left Alone", and "When Sunny Gets Blue". CD

Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $19.99
A beautiful showcase both for the piano of Masaru Imada and the bass of George Mraz – the latter of whom gets really respectful treatment on this Japanese-only session – in the best tradition of the Three Blind Mice record label! TBM always had a way of showcasing the bass that was different than American jazz labels of the 70s – and that's definitely the case here, as Mraz brings forth all his warmth and depth to match the gently lyrical touches of Masaru Imada on the piano – an equally great player, and one who really holds us rapt here, without support from any other musicians save George. The set features some great originals by Imada – including "Blue Road", "Blue Rain", "Remember Of Love", and "Poppy" – plus a nice take on "Stella By Starlight". CD

✨✧ Jose JamesBlack Magic (10th anniversary edition) ... LP
Brownswood/Rainbow Blonde, 2010. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99 25.99
A brilliant second set from Jose James – and that's saying a lot, given that his debut was already a classic in our book! The sound here is a little more full, and a little more confident – a magical blend of James' raspy vocals with some jazz and funk-inflected rhythms – never overdone, and all put together with the kind of poise and depth that's made Jose an artist to watch since his very first single! There's a positive, progressive vibe to the whole record – the kind of excitement we only feel grabbing us once in a blue moon – and the sound is expanded a bit from the laidback combo of the first record, thanks to production help from Flying Lotus, Mitsu The Beats, and others. But James' vocals are always center stage in the mix, no matter what the setting – and titles include "Lay You Down", "Touch", "Promise In Love", "Warrior", "Made For Love", "Code", "Save Your Love For Me", "Detroit Loveletter", and "Beauty". Dr Prof Leonard KingStill Steppin – 10th Anniversary ... CD
Uuquipleu, 2020. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
One of the many great projects from drummer Leonard King – a larger ensemble, but one that's still got all the sharp energy of his smaller group work! King's definitely in the lead on drums, and getting help from a few percussionists too – singing at times, urging the group on in ways that aren't that different from some of Roy Porter's vocalizations back on his famous albums of the 70s! In other words, King is a drummer first and a singer second – but his way of putting over a tune really shows how all-in he is with his music – leading a group that also includes some strong work on trumpet and a mixture of reeds from an assortment of different players. The great Ron English is in the group on guitar – and titles include "Number Four", "Deep Blue", "The Story Of Neptune", "Atoll", "Pissed Off With A High Degree Of Elegance", "True Bassonification Suite", and "Closed For Remodeling Suite". Leaf (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $7.99 11.99
A very different album than the previous effort from drummer/percussionist Saratha Korwar – a lot more political, as you might guess from the title – and a set that has the London musician working with performers from the hip hop scenes in Mumbai and New Delhi! Most of the tunes have a soaring, majestic quality – a similar blend of jazz and global elements that we've heard in Korwar's music – but the additional of lyrics on most numbers really transforms the whole thing, and uses Korwar's strong sonic sensibilities as the backdrop for some very powerful global messages! MCs include Trap Poju, MIrande, Zia Ahmed, Aditya Prakash, Deepak Unnikrishnan, MC Mawali, and Delhi Sultanate – and titles include "Mango", "City Of Words", "Bol", "Pravasis", "Good Ol Vilayati", "Coolie", and "Mumbay". BMG (Brazil), 1970. Used ... $11.99
A great session by Carlos Lyra – recorded a few years after his bossa-era classics, but with a very similar feel! Carlos' vocals and guitar are as wonderful as ever – soft and gentle, with the right touch of sad emotion, but still the slight jazzy swing that's always made his work so great. The session was actually recorded in Mexico – and is one of Lyra's rarest albums – and in a way, the whole thing's even more unique than some of his better-known classics from earlier years! Titles include "El Jacal", "Blanaceo", "Vacilada", "Para No Decir Adios", "Lugar Bonito", and "Viene Del Amor". CD

A vocal jazz session, but one with a very different flavor than usual – given that Emi Makabe plays the Japanese stringed instrument shamisen, and also sings most of the lyrics in Japanese! The rest of the group is unusual, too – as the quartet features Victor Goncalves alternating between piano and accordion, and Kenny Wollesen alternating between drums and vibes – mixed with the bass of Thomas Morgan, in a way that creates a wonderfully fluid sense of tone and color throughout the set. Titles include "Joy", "Moon & I", "Mielcke", "Rino", "I Saw The Light", "Flash", and "Treeing". CD

A fantastically swinging album from Italian piano giant Guido Manusardi – a player who works here with a lot more groove in his left hand than we remember, and very strong support from the other two members of his trio! There's a rock-solid focus to the record right from the start – a vibe that's almost like some classic trio date from the Oscar Peterson generation – in which familiar tunes are really transformed, thanks to the swinging, soulful energy of the combo – which also features Roberto Piccolo on bass and Gianni Cazzola on drums. The set includes one nice original by Manusardi, "Mr G" – and other tunes include "You Stepped Out Of A Dream", "Three Flowers", "Love For Sale", "Just Friends", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", and "Quiet Now". EMI (Brazil), 1981. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Spare duets between these two Brazilian jazz giants Cesar Camargo Mariano and Helio Delmiro – but great work throughout, and filled with a lot more soul and energy than you'd expect! Mariano plays mostly electric keyboards – but not in a way that overrides the acoustic guitar of Delmiro – and the set's got a lot of the same elements of the best jazzy backing that Mariano provided for Elis Regina in the 70s, that great sense of darkness at the bottom – plus all the tight solo moments of Delmiro's own work from the 80s. Titles include "Curumim", "Samambaia", "Ninhos", "Choratta", "Emotiva No 4", and "Milagre Dos Peixes". LP, Vinyl record album

Cesar Mariano & CIASao Paulo - Brasil ... LP
RCA/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.98
A fantastic bit of funky fusion from Brazil – one of the most hard-hitting albums we've ever heard from keyboardist Cesar Mariano! Mariano had a long legacy in music that included great arrangements for Elis Regina – but this set is completely different than most of his other work – almost in a CTI Records sort of vein, as if Mariano were trying to follow the mode of his contemporary Deodato – but with a stronger current of Brazilian jazz, especially all of the complexity that was coming into that music at the time. Most of the instrumentation is electric – with a great mix of guitars, bass, and keyboards – but there's also nice use of acoustic bass and piano – for a groove that's both funky, but also touched with strong elements of Brazilian jazz. Titles include the cool funky track "Metropole", the break cut "Fabrica", and the mellow groover "Imigrantes" – as well as the tunes "Metro", "Litoral", and "Futebol De Bar". LP, Vinyl record album

The shift of moods, tones, and sounds are as varied as the choice of celebrities appearing with the group on the cover – and the interplay between Paul, Linda, and Denny Laine has really hit its stride – on titles that include one of our all-time Wings favorites, "Nineteen Hundred Eighty Five" – plus "Band On The Run", "Bluebird", "Jet", "Mrs Vanderbilt", "Let Me Roll It", "Mamunia", "No Words", and "Picasso's Last Words (Drink To Me)". MiquelaI A De Sars ... LP
Ventadorn/Finders Keepers (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
An album from the mid 70s, but one that's got an almost timeless sort of vibe – given that it was recorded in the ancient language of Occitan, and set to instrumentation with lots of lightly folksy touches, and a fair bit of jazz-styled phrasing too! The mix almost gives the set the feel of some of the best Saravah Records material of the decade – and the instrumentation, arrangements, and even presentation of language follow that sort of spirit too – as Miguela has a very poetic approach to her music, and the language, while not totally familiar, does echo a fair bit of the French of her homeland – but sometimes with a spooky blend of past and present, ala Wicker Man. Titles include "De Bon Matin", "Les Colonies", "Palunaia", "La Targa", "Lo Barranguet", "I A De Sers", and "Tu E Ieu". Also features two bonus tracks from a 45 – "Retorn" and "Magali". Michel SardabyNight Blossom (2CD version) ... CD
DIW (Japan), 1990. New Copy ... About August 19, 2020 (delayed)
Lovely work from pianist Michel Sardaby – a player who probably spent more time on the eastern side of the Atlantic than he did in America, which is a reason why he never really got his due in the US. However, Sardaby's connection to the Parisian scene filled his playing with that wonderful mix of lyricism and modernism that you find in the best French jazz pianists – and it's still very much alive in this 1990 recording for DIW. The set features backing by Tootie Heath on drums and Jay Leonhart on bass – a great duo, who really bring a lot of energy to the set – even though Sardaby's still the main focus, with those beautifully flowing lines of his that we love so much! Strong work by a composer who's becoming one of our favorite French soundtrack artists! This score is fairly dramatic – but handled in a way that has subtle little touches of intimacy, with solo bass instrumentation by Ron Carter and Buster Williams. It's a dark set of tracks written for a crime thriller starring Yves Montand and Gerard Depardieu. CAM/Quartet (Spain), Early 70s. New Copy ... $28.99
A pair of obscure soundtrack gems from Philippe Sarde – back to back on a single CD! First up is Max Et Les Ferrailleurs – an excellent funky French soundtrack! Philippe Sarde scored the music for this obscure film starring Michel Piccoli and Romy Schneider – and the best cuts have a cool French jazz sound that mixes guitar, vibes, trumpet, and hard on-the-beat vamping by the bass and drums. You may know the cool cut "Juke Boxes Chez Saidani" from a few compilations, and the album's got a few more cuts that have a variation on a similar theme. "Juke Boxes" features great popping bass and electric sitar – and other tracks include "Le Bal Des Ferrailleurs", "Description Des Ferrailleurs", and "Generique". Vincent, Francois, Paul, Et Les Autres has a sound that's maybe more in keeping with some of the richer modes you might know from Philippe Sarde – that special sense of fragile emotion that can make his music so powerful, even when subtle – which it definitely is here at points, although balanced with some beautiful orchestrations handled by Hubert Rostaing, and bandoneon solos from Marcel Azzola. Gil Scott-HeronI'm New Here (10th Anniversary expanded edition) ... LP
XL, 2010. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
Heavy, soul-baring lyricism delivered with spiritual resonance and wise authority by Gil Scott-Heron – his first album shot in far too many years, and a direct hit – essential listening for longtime listeners and neophytes alike and a well worthy entry in a legendary career! Scott-Heron is documenting his world as profoundly and poetically as ever here, and the production is built with spare, haunting beats and atmospheric bits of strings, guitar, keys, loose atmospherics and hazy electronics – loosely framing his voice and giving it all the room in needs to carry the mood. Gil sings and speaks with equal authority throughout, and you can hear the years in his voice like never before, giving him the worn edges of the old soul he always evoked. This is a record we're proud to put among his treasured recordings of the 70s and early 80s. Titles include "On Coming From A Broken Home" (Parts 1 & 2), "Your Soul And Mine", "I'll Take Care Of You", "Where Did The Night Go", "Running", "The Crutch" and more, including several interludes that are pretty amazing – captures of conversation that show Gil nearly as charismatic and poetic in "off" moments as he is recording a song. Also includes 2 covers, "Me And The Devil" (the Robert Johnson song) and the title track, Smog/Bill Callahan's "I'm New Here", given a whole new life. Expanded anniversary version also features some great material recorded at the same time – the titles "Handsome Johnny", "My Cloud", "Piano Player", "King Henry IV", "Jazz", and 2010 live studio takes of "Home Is Where The Hatred Is", "Is That Jazz", and "Winter In America". Shigeko ToyaShigeko Toya With The Imada Masaru Trio ... CD
Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... $19.99
An unusual little session from early 70s Japan – one that features some jazz vocals from Shigeko Toya, but also a fair bit of piano as well – set alongside backing from the trio of Masaru Imada, who plays organ on the numbers that don't feature Toya on the piano! If that sounds confusing, it's not meant to be – and is more a reflection of the many-voiced style of the set – because the record's less a vocal album than kind of a three-pointed set that features some straight piano numbers, some with torchy vocals, and others that have the organ bringing in a bluesier tone. Toya's vocal style is a bit unusual, and not for the uninitiated – but it does make her stand out in a world of straighter Japanese singers from the time. Titles include "Tadd's Blues", "Hymn To Freedom", "Yesterday", "Can't Help Lovin Dat Man", and "Call Me Irresponsible". CD

One of Sarah Vaughan's first albums of Latin-tinged tracks – showing the roots of her interest in Brazilian music that would develop even more fully into the 70s. The record features a large group arranged and conducted by Frank Foster – with a host of jazz soloists, plus Latin percussion by the likes of Willie Bobo, Jose Mangual, and Willie Rodriguez. Titles include lively versions of "Jive Samba", "The Boy From Ipanema", "Mr Lucky", "Quiet Nights", and "Moment Of Truth". Tasty stuff – and very groovy! LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono red label pressing with deep groove.)
