Howlin WolfHowling Wolf Sings The Blues ... LP
Crown/P-Vine (Japan), Early 50s. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 34.99
Howlin Wolf sings the blues, and comes across in a way that influences an entire generation too – with that raw, raspy sound that made the singer a perfect blend of delta roots and contemporary sounds that were bubbling up in the postwar years! These tracks have a spare, simple, stark style that's still a lot more powerful than most of the records that tried to copy Wolf's modes in later years – mindblowing guitar work from Willie Johnson, harmonica lines that weave the whole thing together, and tremendous vocals that would shake the paint off your walls, even without any other instrumentation! Titles include "Crying At Daybreak", "Twisting & Turning", "Brown Skin Woman", "Morning At Midnight", "Backslide Boogie", "House Rockin Boogie", "Keep What You Got", and "Worried About My Baby". Alexis KornerBootleg Him! ... LP
Warner, 1972. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $14.99 24.99
A record with a strange mix of elements on the outside – a confusing title, a proggy-cover image – but one that's got a sound that's a perfect maturation of the fantastic sound of Alexis Korner in the 60s! Korner's one of the overlooked heroes in British music – a strong devotee of American blues, and maybe so much so that sounds more like his inspirations than most – but never in a slavish way, as Alexis is always able to full absorb the sound, and make you feel like it's coming from his own deep soul – and over the years, he really shifted things in these slight, but powerful ways – making his music a huge influence on a big generation of UK rock acts to come. Here, the double-length set is almost a "thanks back" affair – as Korner records with a huge all-star array that includes folks like Robert Plant, Jack Bruce, Charlie Watts, Ginger Baker, Graham Bond, Lol Coxhill, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Ray Warleigh, Harry Beckett, and many more – a fantastic crossroads of all that's hip in British rock, blues, and jazz at the start of the 70s. Titles include "I Got A Woman", "Rockin", "She Foold Me", "I Wonder Who", "Dee", "Love Is Gonna Go", "Clay House Inn", "Evil Hearted Woman", "Mighty Mighty", "Sunrise", and "Hellhound On My Tail". Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $21.99 22.99
A really cool package, and one that goes past the easy old school hits from the early years of hip hop – and which instead brings together all these unusual strands of sound that really show how creative things were, right at the start! There's a number of tracks here that are a great surprise – nuggets we loved back in the day, and which spring to live here amidst other well-chosen tracks – all served up with the usual super-great notes and overall presentation we love from the Soul Jazz label. Many tracks have great basslines or boogie-styled grooves – from that moment when hip hop, funk, and soul were maybe more strong bedfellows than they would be a few years later – and themes are a nice mix of politics and partying, on titles that include "Get Live 83" by Carver Area High School Seniors, "Super Rock Body Shock" by Eye Beta Rock, "Street Talk" by Funky Constellation, "Do You Like That Funky Beat" by Kool Kyle The Starchild, "Jam To Remember" by Just Four, "Eei Eei O" by Silver Star, "Magic's Rap" by Magic's Trick, "Real Rocking Groove" by Chapter III, "To The Beat Y'All" by Sangrita, "Rappin & Rockin The House" by Funky Four Plus One More, "Do It Any Way You Wanna" by Mike T, and "Girls Of The World" by The Just Four. Brunswick/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful work from the later years of Brunswick Records – a time when the company briefly re-emerged as a surprising force on the hipper dancefloors of the time – thanks to a great run of funky club, soulful disco, and seminal boogie tracks! Brunswick didn't issue many albums at the time – and they were quite far from their hit years of the early 70s – but their 12" output from the period is wonderful, and way more than just the usual throwaway work for the discos – done with a real sense of quality, and a devotion to both funk and soul undercurrents that really keep things strong. Titles on this great 3rd volume include "Don't Say Goodnight" and "Love Me Today" by First Love, instrumental and vocal versions of "I Wanna Boogie With You" by Charlie Singleton & Stargasm, "Jammin Big Guitar" and "Rockin Big Guitar" by Vaughan Mason, vocal and instrumental versions of "Word Up" by Legacy, vocal and instrumental versions of "Gimme The Funk" by Charade, "Rock The House (parts 1 & 2)" by Elite, and the fantastic groover "You Are The One" by AM/FM. A package that definitely lives up to the title – as it presents the hardest-wailing work recorded by Memphis Slim in the postwar years – including plenty of cuts that were a huge influence on early rock and roll, and many that have him in more of an R&B mode than usua! Slim's records weren't always upbeat, but the cuts in this set definitely are – and include some killer cuts with his Houserockers group, and work from a young guitarist Matt Murphy too! As always with Bear Family, the presentation is wonderful – not just well-chosen cuts, but a great package overall – featuring 29 titles that include "Rockin The House", "Memphis Slim USA", "Pacemaker Boogie", "Wish Me Well", "Big Bertha", "Old Taylor", "Harlem Bound", "Back Alley", "Tia Juana", "She's Allright", and "Gotta Find My Baby". ✨✧ LighthousePeacing It All Together (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
RCA/Beatball (Korea), 1970. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the most complex album so far from Lighthouse – a set that begins with some great heavy drums, then rolls into the group's trademark blend of jazzy riffing, rocking rhythms, and soaring arrangements! There's a bit more Sunshine Pop in Lighthouse compared to some of their contemporaries in the jazz rock world at the start of the 70s – no attempts to be unnaturally soulful in the lyrics, nor too posturing either – and instead, there's almost a vocal gentleness that makes for a nice counterpoint to the full instrumental modes of the large horn-heavy ensemble. A few cuts get nice and funky, and titles include "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo/Let The Happiness Begin", "The Country Song", "Sausalito", "The Fiction Of Twenty Six Million", "On My Way To LA", and "Daughters & Sons". Sid King & The Five StringsGonna Shake This Shake Tonight ... LP
Columbia/Bear Family (Germany), Mid 50s. Near Mint- ... $14.99 18.99
A killer collection of rare mid 50s Columbia Records singles by Sid King – a key figure in helping hillbilly music transition to rock and roll! Sid is probably more country than some of his rocking contemporaries, and the work here actually seems to be perfectly balanced between the two modes – maybe in part because the group hails from Texas, and in part because much of the production is handled by Don Law – the Columbia country powerhouse, and a studio talent who's got an especially strong ear for making the guitar ring out in the mix! There's a great sense of growth going on over the space of the years in these tunes – definitely hillbilly in the early 50s cuts, but hard rockabilly genius on the later ones too. RCA/Bear Family (Germany), Late 1950s/Early 1960s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Lots of older record companies got in on the action during the early days of rock and roll – but few folks did it as well as RCA Records – home, of course, to Elvis Presley – and also to all the great lesser-known gems featured in this set! Some tracks are by artists who would break big on later labels, or others who might have stepped over a bit from country – but the bulk of the collection represents all the great singles that RCA cut during the late 50s and early 60s – including some on its sub-labels, where the company was going strong in the worlds of underground styles! Given that this excellent series already looked at RCA once before, it's a further testament that there's an additional 35 rocking gems to be pulled from the label's catalog – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Wild Child" by David Hill, "Get On The Right Track" by Joe Clay, "Rainbow Doll" by Jimmy Dell, "Welcome To The Club" by Jean Chapel, "Wolf Boy" by Sammy Salvo, "Hoebe Snow" by Benny Martin, "Never Been Kissed" by Marlin Greene, "Chicken House" by Dave Rich, "Heart Of A Fool" by Lee Denson, "Almost Eighteen" by Roy Orbison, "That Weepin Willow Tree" by Ray Griff, and "Dumb Bunny" by Bill Carlis. An imagined take on the Mid-East scene – not authentic tracks, but a mix of postwar recordings in a variety of styles – most of which mix rocking rhythms with the kind of exotic touches that fed fantasies back in the day when the area was known as Asia Minor! As with other "destination" series collections, the mix of work here is wonderful – all sorts of cool and unusual tunes, of the sort you might have found in The Cramps' record collections – music that moves between rock and soul, instrumental and vocal, jazz and exotica – as they chart a path for a desert caravan to follow! 32 tracks in all – and titles include "Pasha" by The Ramrocks, "Rockin In Bagdad" by Jerry Reid, "Turkish Doghouse Rock" by Kent Westberry, "Ali Baba" by Dave & The Customs, "Ali Baba's Boogie" by Preston Love", "Camel Walk (part 1)" by The Saxons, "Ali Ben Ghazi" by Jack Hammer, and "Habibi Twist" by The Latins. The legendary Headhunters are still in mighty great shape after all these years – different in lineup, but still a sublime showcase for the work of Mike Clark on drums and Bill Summers on percussion – two of the core Headhunters who first worked with Herbie Hancock back in the 70s! The rest of the lineup features alto sax from Donald Harrison, plus keyboards from Kyle Roussel and bass from Chris Severin – and as with other later iterations of the group, there's a fair bit of jazz in the mix, alongside the more familiar funk of the Headhunters' own records from back in the day – a quality that's probably even more pronounced here in the live setting, which features extended tracks with plenty of room for solos! Titles include versions of "Chameleon", "Headhunter Jam", "Four String Drive", "Butterfly", "Hey Pocky A Way", "Rocking At The Mole House", and "Watermelon Man". CD

There's not really any vocals, so the set avoids the "Monster Mash" novelty vibe – but it more than makes up for it with the use of plenty of odd sound effects amidst the echoey production of the rocking instrumentation – almost as if some surf/hot rod combo showed up to play a gig in a spot that turned out to be a haunted house – and they kept on rocking while all the ghouls showed up for the party! A weird and wonderful collection of tracks – funk, soul, and plenty more – all put together without any sort of boundaries or focus – which makes the whole thing one hell of a groovy record! The set's one of the flagship titles for the Seth Rogan-owned Houseplant label – one of their few vinyl releases, designed to fit in with the lifestyle of their other products – but even without that pedigree, there's plenty of great and well-chosen cuts here – and the assortment makes the whole thing way different than any standard funky compilation! Benny JoyBenny Joy Rocks ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 1950s. New Copy ... $15.99 20.99
Rockabilly legend Billy Joy definitely rocks – hardly a household name in the 50s, but a killer figure in the rock and roll underground – and one whose fame has just grown more and more over the years! The package is a beautifully-done tribute to Benny's genius – and presents the most hard-rocking of his important 50s recordings, as well as a host of unreleased tracks from later demos too! Joy's guitar work alone is amazing, but when it's coupled with the kickass rhythms of the tunes, the music really takes off to a whole new level – burning with the power you'd expect from the classic Johnny Burnette Trio – and that's before Benny's gritty vocals even come into play! CD features 30 tracks in all – including some lost recordings from the 70s – titles that include "Rollin To The Juke Box Rock", "Dark Angel", "Miss Bobby Sox", "Little Red Book", "Button Nose", "Come Back", "Wild Wild Lover", "In Study Hall", "Crash The Party (unedited)", "Spin The Bottle (Nashville demo)", "Big John Taylor", "High High School Baby", and "Nosey Nosey Neighbors". Blue Note (France), 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
Drummer Alphonse Mouzon cut some of the hardest, heaviest fusion albums ever to hit the Blue Note label in the 70s – including this legendary powerhouse of a record! The set features Mouzon with one of his longtime partners – guitarist Tommy Bolin – hitting a hard-rocking, heavy fusion sound that really blows off the roof – more than enough influence from the younger generation to showcase the new energy hitting electric jazz – and a bit like some of the work that Alphonse would do with other artists in later years! Mouzon's drums explode like a case of dynamite hitting a nitroglycerine factory – and Bolin wails away on guitar like a buzzsaw out of control. There's some nice little licks on the set – making the record a good one for the sample crowd – and a really high octane album with loads of nice changes! Titles include "Nitroglycerin", "Mind Transplant", "Snow Bound", "Ascorbic Acid", and "Carbon Dioxide". CD

✨✧ VariousTurn It Loose, Ain't No Good – Savoy Gospel 1970 to 1979 ... LP
Savoy/Honest Jons (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
An insanely fantastic look at the strong legacy of gospel music from Savoy Records – a company who were initially a powerhouse in the fields of jazz and R&B, but who moved into the gospel world and dominated that market for decades! Savoy is a bit like Chess Records – a company who really learned how to record blues singers and soulful styles from the secular world, then used that same ability to work some real magic on songs from the more spiritual side of the spectrum – an approach that really made for top-shelf music, even as the decades moved on! Savoy's gospel legacy has always been a bit underground – not nearly as reissued for larger audiences as their jazz and blues material – but this collection does a great job of correcting that lack, by presenting their music in a wonderful format – all in a mix of rare cuts and classics from the gospel underground. This second volume features work from Savoy's prime 70s gospel years – 20 tracks by artists who include The Metro Tones, Betty Hollins, Gene Martin, Swan Silvertones, Artistic Sounds, James Moore, Holy Lights Of Baltimore, Brooklyn Skyways, World Wonders, Myrna Summers, Brockingham Ensemble, Prof Charles Taylor, Exciting Supreme Highlights, and Highway QCs.
