B-52sB-52s (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Warner/Rhino, 1979. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
A hell of a debut from The B-52s – and a record that's become surprisingly timeless over the years, despite a retro-styled approach by the group! These guys aren't the silly group of later years here – and instead, they've got this moody darkness that's wonderful – a re-envisioned postwar America, one in which the neuroses are all on the outside – served up with instrumentation that's stark, but incredibly tight – snapping drums, riffing guitar, and these great organ lines that sound beautiful next to the vocals of Fred and the girls. The set gave the group their perennial hit "Rock Lobster" – but taken as a whole, it's an incredibly different landscape – as you'll discover on tracks that include "Planet Claire", "52 Girls", "Dance This Mess Around", "Lava", "There's A Moon In The Sky (Called The Moon)", "Hero Worship", "6060-842" and "Downtown". B-52sLive! 8-24-1979 ... CD
Rhino/Real Gone, 1979. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A first ever release of this killer B-52s live set – recorded in 1979, shortly after the release of their first record – opening for the Talking Heads in Boston! The band is in peak early form here, really throwing a hell of a great party on stage, with a set that's heavy on classics from first and second albums, the latter of which wouldn't even be released until the following year! There's a nicely raw feel to the record – a reminder that although they broke to the mainstream on a big label, these guys came out of the late 70s indie underground – working here with the kind of offbeat energy that made them a standout act both in their hometown of Athens – and in the New York scene where they really made their mark. Titles include "52 Girls", "606-0842", "Devil In My Car", "Dance This Mess Around", "Rock Lobster", and "Strobe Light". CD

B-52sWild Planet ... LP
Warner/Rhino, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 23.99
They may look goofy on the cover, but the young B-52s are incredible here – working with this spare sense of power that almost makes us think that we didn't need most of what happened in rock and roll during the 70s – given the way these guys can distill a mood or moment down to just a few deft instrumental turns and offbeat lyrics! The record's not punk, but it's also not new wave either – at least in the conventional way – and there's a darkness here that goes way past any simple cliches you may have associated with the band – a haunting feel that transcends most of what they were ever capable of in later years. We might even say this one tops their debut – and titles include "Party Out Of Bounds", "Dirty Back Road", "Runnin Around", "Give Me Back My Man", "Private Idaho", "Devil In My Car", "Quiche Lorraine", "Strobe Light" and "53 Miles West Of Venus". Rhino/Stax, 1960s. Used ... $3.99
What can we say? Booker T and crew are always tops in our book – and this album's as strong a batch of their classic singles as you'll ever find! Book's organ is the sound of a generation, and Steve Cropper's sinister vamping on guitar gives even the poppier tracks a hard edge that still sends shivers down our spine! The set's got 16 tracks than run the gamut of the group's years at Stax – including "Green Onions", "Soul Dressing", "Boot-Leg", "Hip Hug Her", "Mo Onions", "Soul Limbo", "My Sweet Potato", "Slim Jenkins Place", "Time Is Tight", "Slum Baby", and the amazing jazzer "Melting Pot". Ray's voice works perfectly with the material, and thanks to soulful arrangements by Gil Fuller, Marty Paich, and Gerald Wilson, the whole thing comes off to perfection. ✨✧ John ColtraneRoulette Sides (180 gram 10 inch LP) ... LP
Roulette/Rhino, 1960. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Some of our favorite material by John Coltrane – a handful of sides recorded for Roulette Records at the start of the 60s – only issued as part of a split LP that was shared with Lee Morgan! This limited 10" LP pressing features the album's side of Coltrane's work – which features him playing with an unusual quartet that includes McCoy Tyner, plus bassist Steven Davis and drummer Billy Higgins. Higgins' gives Coltrane a modal groove that's incredible, and Trane hits these riffs that are almost Nathan Davis-ish on tracks like "Exotica", presented in 2 versions, plus "Like Sonny" and "One & Four". Miles DavisRubberband ... CD
Rhino, 1986. New Copy ... $15.99 16.98
Great lost work from Miles Davis – early material recorded for Warner Brothers in the mid 80s, and never released at the time – now finally uncovered from the vaults, and presented with a few slight contemporary touches! The core music is prime electric Miles funk all the way through – a great first step into the territory that he'd explore at Warner in his final years, but also with some traces of the Columbia records from the few years before – strong trumpet solos amidst bold rhythms – given new life here from instrumentalists Randy Hall and Attala Zane Giles. The music has been updated from the original tapes – with a richer sound, and a vibe that sounds less dated – and vocals have been added in a few spots, including great work from Ledisi and Lalah Hathaway. Titles include "Rubberband Of Life", "Echoes In Time/The Wrinkle", "See I See", "I Love What We Make Together", "So Emotional", "Paradise", "Maze", and "Give It Up". CD

DevoDuty Now For The Future (magenta vinyl pressing) ... LP
Warner/Rhino, 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
Devo's second album didn't scare the bejesus out of 70s rock fans in the way of their agitpop masterpiece debut, and the group's mainstream salad days of "Whip It" were still another year or two away, but nowadays we wouldn't trade Duty Now For The Future for just about any post punk album of the time! At this point the punk-era crunch was still a sizable portion of the plate – for that extra aggro kick behind the squealing synthesizers and primitive electronics. Long underappreciated, and all but ignored in the CD era, Duty. . .has excellent tracks that will always be loved by the Spuds even if WEA kept it buried too long! "Devo Corporate Anthem", "Clockout", "Wiggly World", "Blockhead", "Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA", "Red Eye" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

DevoNew Traditionalists (colored vinyl pressing – with poster) ... LP
Warner/Rhino, 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 23.98
A great one from Devo – capping off their classic era when they could hardly do wrong! By 1981, the gentlemen Devo had been up to their collective arse in irony since the early 70s, and having made a sizable fortune for the Brothers' Warner with the ultra-ironic "Whip It" the previous year, they took a sharp right turn into cranky sincerity. They did so on a wave of new wave synth funk, of course, resulting in the all-time great singles "Beautiful World", "Through Being Cool" and a few more gems. Mtv and a lot of the fans couldn't understand why 5 guys with plastic hair and outerspace uniforms were no longer playing it for laughs and thus killed the prospect of Devo as hitmakers for the rest of the decade! A worthy effort from one of the most innovative pop groups ever! Other tracks include "Pity You", "Soft Things","Going Under", "Race Of Doom", "Love Without Anger" and "Enough Said". Paisley Park/Rhino, 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 23.99
A fantastic meeting of two generations of soulful music – Sheila E, the daughter of Cali Latin soul genius Coke Escovedo, meets up with the snappingly funky world of Prince – and results in one of the strongest records of Sheila's career! The singer/percussionist had already been around for about a decade on record – turning out some great Latin work with her brother Pete in the Bay Area – but this set has Sheila going of the top with a great Paisley Park groove, really working with lots of influences from Prince, but still also getting plenty of Latin elements of her own into the mix – on long tracks that are filled with wonderful rhythms and plenty of great percussion too! Titles include the sublime title cut "The Glamorous Life" – plus "The Belle Of St Mark", "Oliver's House", "Strawberry Shortcake", "Noon Rendezvous", and "Next Time Wipe The Lipstick Off Your Collar". Not the Prince music from the first Batman film – but all those other sounds that were used in the movie, penned and produced at a surprisingly strong level by Danny Elfman – who shows the world that he's got a lot more to offer than just his previous work in the group Oingo Boingo! This isn't a rock soundtrack by a fading talent from the mainstream – and instead, it's one of Elfman's first full forays into scoring – performed by the Sinfonia of London with a richness that's given the music maybe a more enduring quality than the film! A classic set from the Grateful Dead – and one that features the group mixing studio tracks with their rising fame as a must-see live act! The package features both concert and studio recordings, and there's a wonderfully optimistic, late 60s vibe to the whole thing – the group still looking forward strongly, almost playing with a sense of surprise as they make their way through new musical discoveries – mixing catchiness and complexity together in ways that few of their contemporaries could match. Grateful DeadGrateful Dead (Skull & Roses) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Warner/Rhino, 1971. Used ... $11.99
Perhaps the best officially-released Dead live album of it's time – the epic self-titled/Skull & Roses – one that finds the Dead at an early high point! The Grateful Dead are best remembered all these years later for their post-reunion tours and in their roles as the unrivaled fathers of all jam bands – but if you're asking us about The Dead, we'll tell you that these fellas don't get the critical respect they deserve for some of their most concise original songs. Or their unique interpretations of classic American songcraft. You get both on this great double live album, as well as some straight-up sharp live performances. This might be the group's peak! Includes "Bertha", their oddly-affectionate take on Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried" and other covers, such as "Me & Bobby McGee" and "Johnny B. Goode", plus"Big Railroad Blues", the side-long sprawl of "The Other One", "Wharf Rat", "Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad", "Playing In The Band" and more. CD

Grateful DeadGrateful Dead (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Warner/Rhino, 1967. Used ... $9.99
The seminal debut of The Grateful Dead – a record that was maybe as important to the American psychedelic scene as the first two albums by Pink Floyd were to the UK! Like those sets, this one almost seems to come out of nowhere – still very much a part of its time, with trippiness and fuzz that other groups were certainly working with – but put together at a level that's very much its own thing, and which is undeniably worthy of all the copycats who paid it tribute in years to come. There's maybe a deeper current of blues roots here than in later years of The Dead – but in the best way possible – and titles include "The Golden Road", "Beat It On Down The Line", "Cold Rain And Snow", "Morning Dew", and "Viola Lee Blues". Jane's AddictionRitual De Lo Habitual (2LP pearl vinyl pressing) ... LP

One of the key genre-starting records from Perry Farrell and Jane's Addiction – work that sprung out of the tail end of the 80s with many of its musical changes intact, but which also isn't really like any of them at all! The record's not really punk, metal, or even some of the hard rock that was morphing into grunge – although it borrows the best of all those styles, and serves things up with that really unique charm that made Farrell such a compelling frontman. The album was the group's last in their initial burst of genius – and fits nicely alongside the other two – with tracks that incude "Been Caught Stealing", "Stop", "No One's Leaving", "Classic Girl", "Then She Did", and "Ain't No Right". All the best early years of Stacy Lattisaw – served up in one nice little set! And when we say "early", we mean early – given that Stacy was just in her teens when she sang a good number of the tunes on this collection! But although young, Lattisaw already had a depth that went beyond most of the older soul singers of her time – a mature, deep-voiced way of putting over a tune with a lot more careful balance of emotion than you might expect for such a youthful talent. Elektra/Rhino, 1967. Used ... Just Sold Out!
What can we say? This is one of the greatest albums of all time – and it's made even better through the addition of a bunch of previously unissued tracks! The record's got a sound that's completely unique – as crack LA garage punk rock meets Hollywood baroque production, and the result is an amazing bit of loud guitar noise backed by strings and horns, all graced by the godlike vocals of the great Arthur Lee. Forever Changes is a milestone in rock – an incredibly bleak document about insanity, escape, and the coming revolution that never happened. Think of all the best moments of Wild In The Streets, Zabriske Point, and Invocation of My Demon Brother rolled into one – and you'll only have a tiny slice of the picture! A record that will haunt us until the day we die – filled with incredible songs like "Alone Again Or", "Old Man", "Daily Planet", "Red Telephone", and "Maybe The People Would Be The Times Or Between Clark & Hilldale". CD version also includes "Hummingbirds (demo)", "Laughing Stock", "Wonder People (I Do Wonder) (outtake)", "Your Mind & We Belong Together", and alternate mixes of tracks on the LP. CD

Elektra/Rhino, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
Love's first album – a seminal bit of Sunset Strip rock, and every bit as powerful today as it was in the 60s! The style's a bit sharper-edged than the group's classic and more familiar Forever Changes set, but it's still pretty darn great – a completely fresh batch of guitar-heavy tunes that bristle with a sound that's a lot more sinister than some of the group's contemporaries. There's a few folksy or bluesy elements in the mix, but they're almost used in a way that parodies bigger acts of the time – turning the familiar into the freaky, all with a sense of power that's simply mindblowing. Titles include the group's excellent version of Burt Bacharach's "My Little Red Book", plus "Hey Joe", "Emotions", "A Message To Pretty", "Mushroom Clouds", "And More", and "Coloured Balls Falling". Rhino, 1967. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $57.99 59.98
A rare treasure from Joni Mitchell – live material recorded at a venue in Ann Arbor, captured here a year before her initial studio album on Reprise Records! The huge package brings together songs from three different sets – nine of which have never been issued before – and there's also a fair bit of conversation from Joni between the songs, presented at a level that shows just what a unique talent she was right at the start – a standout songsmith, and a singer who brings all these inflections to the music that show that she was already breaking free of her roots in folk music! Titles include "Urge For Going", "Morning Morgantown", "Little Green", "The Circle Game", "I Don't Know Where I Stand", "Both Sides Now", "Carnival In Kenora", "Songs To Aging Children Come", "Cactus tree", "Free Darling", "I Had A King", "Play Little David", "The Dowie Dens Of Yarrow", "The Gift Of The Magi", "Chelsea Morning", "Come To The Sunshine", "Conversation", "Marcie", "A Melody In Your Name", and "Ballerina Valerie". Van MorrisonAstral Weeks ... LP
Warner/Rhino, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 25.98
Van's debut album for Warner Brothers and a pretty radical departure from anything he'd done before – breaking all kinds of new ground for his own most creative work and helping pave the way for all kinds of hauntingly poetic rock, folk rock, and singer-songwriter records to come! It doesn't take hearing more than a few seconds of the opening title track, with Morrison's rawly passionate voice and spiritually yearning lyrics, to know this is a pretty remarkable creative leap from pop leaning sound of "Brown Eyed Girl" and other preceding efforts! It's almost folk jazz, arrangements wise, with flute and largely acoustic instrumentation, a really spontaneous feel to the sessions, and always hypnotic, seemingly stream of consciousness vocals by Van. As loose and spacious as the sound is, the emotional resonance is pretty heavy, and it's sequenced as a cycle: part one (In The Beginning) on side 1 and part two (Afterwards) on side 2. A stunner! Titles include "Astral Weeks", "Beside You", "Cyprus Avenue", "Sweet Thing", "Slim Slow Slider", and "Madame George". LP, Vinyl record album

PoguesPogues – BBC Sessions 1984 to 1986 ... CD
Rhino, Mid 80s. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
A fantastic addition to the Pogues recordings of the classic years – material recorded in a variety of settings for BBC Radio broadcasts, all of which really capture the group at their best! There would be occasional BBC tracks as b-sides on initial UK singles over the years, but this set is the first time that the material's been collected together in bulk like this – and it's almost like having an extra album from the generation of Rum Sodomy & The Lash! As with other BBC recordings, the tracks are done live, but with an intimacy that's different than a concert or venue performance (the boys were maybe a bit less drunk too) – and the quality is excellent throughout. The set features 22 tracks in all – One early session for John Peel, plus another Peel session – and more for the David Kid Jensen Show, Phil Kennedy Show, and two more for the Janice Long Show. CD

John PrinePink Cadillac (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Asylum/Rhino, 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 23.99
John Prine's got a slightly more stylish look on the cover here, and the record's got a slightly more stylish sound as well – production by Knox and Jerry Phillips (sons of Sun Records' Sam Phillips) – who set up Prine's amazing vocals and songs with a bit of a Tennessee vibe – not really country rock, as the album's very much John's own – but a slightly different feel than his previous work. There's also a slight touch of the Sun Records history here – guitar from Billy Lee Riley on one cut, and a few tunes that aren't Prine's own – but the whole thing still comes together at a level that's right up there with his best 70s classics. Tracks include "Chinatown", "Automobile", "Killing The Blues", "Saigon", "Cold War", "Side Of The Road", "How Lucky", and a remake of "Ubangi Stomp". LP, Vinyl record album

John Prine takes a trip down to Muscle Shoals for this classic album on Asylum – a set that mixes the best of his singer/songwriter spirit with just the right touch of Alabama soul! The blend is a nice one – as producer Barry Beckett still lets Prine do all the things he does so well – while maybe finding a new sort of vibe for the coming decade, yet without ever sounding commercial or like he's trying for a hit. Most of the tunes are still Prine's own – as sharply-penned as ever – and tracks include "Storm Windows", "One Red Rose", "I Had A Dream", "Living In The Future", "It's Happening To You", "Shop Talk", and "Sleepy Eyed Boy". A huge album for Patrice Rushen – thanks largely to the track "Forget Me Nots", which is a perfect blend of jazz and soul, in that warm sweet style she was forging after her early days as more of a fusion artist. The rest of the album's every bit as great – and the songwriting and quality of the work shows that Patrice, like other jazz funkateers of her generation, was every bit as capable of changing round her styles and still staying strong. StoogesHave Some Fun – Live At Ungano's ... CD
Rhino Handmade/Wounded Bird, 1970. New Copy ... $6.99 11.99
Raw, incendiary live material from The Stooges, circa 1970 – recorded at NYC dive bar Ungano's, right around the time that Fun House was released! They blast through nearly all the tracks from Fun House here, minus "LA Blues", and with the rare "Have Some Fun/My Dream Is Dead", which as far as we know, was never released before Rhino Handmade dug up this incredible recording. The source was a reel-to-reel capture by someone in the audience, so the sound is a bit rough – which is of little concern when what we have here is a really important building block in creation of punk rock! Plus, the whole thing also begins with "Going To Ungano's" – street conversation that makes you feel like you're outside, going into the show. CD

United Artists/Rhino, 1972. Used ... $11.99
A monster from start to finish – not only the greatest album from War, but maybe one of the greatest mainstream funk albums of all time! The set's got a really unique groove – one that so many others tried to copy, but which was forged here first – in a wicked LA blend of Chicano funk, heavy organ lines, and soulful singing that sews the whole thing together perfectly. Just about every cut is upbeat and funky – rolling along at that low-rider pace that was War's lasting contribution to funk music – and the album features the huge hits "World Is A Ghetto" and "Cisco Kid", two of the brightest spots on radio funk from the 70s – plus classics like "Four Cornered Room", "City Country City", "Where Was You At", and "Beetles In The Bog". ✨✧ War & Eric BurdonEric Burdon Declares War ... CD
MGM/Rhino, 1970. Used ... $9.99
War became so popular on their own in later years that it's easy to forget how they first sprung onto the soul charts – here, in an album of many styles that was put together by the wayward Eric Burdon after the dissolution of The Animals. We have to admit that Burdon was a genius to hook onto the rich talents of this LA combo – even though he really didn't know what to do with them on this record. Part of the album's an homage to Roland Kirk, part is an extended reworking of "Tobacco Road", and part is an overly-long bluesy passage called "Blues For Memphis Slim". Fortunately, the record also includes the monster groover "Spill The Wine", one of the first big crossover tracks to popularize the Chicano funk sound of LA – and a great little groover that still hooks us in today. One of the greatest soul groups of the 70s – finally given their due on this double-length set! Bloodstone may not have charted as strongly as some of their contemporaries back in the day, yet they always delivered top-shelf work that was filled with incredible harmonies, deft vocal leads, and other subtle touches that really made their music stand out from the rest. This 16 track package includes some key tracks from their London Records years, plus a few bits from later recordings too – and the group's harmonies are in fine form throughout – whether on the spacey ballad soul of "Natural High", or on the funkier uptempo material of "Traffic Cop". While "best of" sets tend to make us cringe, we're also huge fans of funk master Jimmy Castor, and this compilation is just about the only way you'll get his work on CD! Plus, the fact that it's a greatest hits comp isn't too bad – as some of Jimmy's non-single tracks were duds, and most of the best stuff is gathered here on this 17 track collection. The set's got most of his best moments – from early Latin groovers like "Hey Leroy, You're Mama's Calling You" and "Southern Fried Frijoles", to the heavy funk classics "It's Just Begun" and "Troglodyte". Also includes some of the more sucker-cut material by Leroy – like "Bertha Butt Boogie" and "King Kong" – but there's more than enough here for everyone, and the set's got over 75 minutes of music!
