Mose AllisonI Don't Worry About A Thing ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino, 1962. Used ... $4.99
One of Mose Allison's first albums for Atlantic – a great set of soulful jazz vocals, done in a rootsy style that has some slight New Orleans touches – and a nice sort of beat undercurrent! The sound of the set follows nicely from Mose's earlier work for Prestige and Columbia – with Mose on piano, plus Addison Farmer on bass and Osie Johnson on drums. The set features 10 tracks in all – including "I Don't Worry About A Thing", "It Didn't Turn Out That Way", "Your Mind Is On Vacation", "Stand By", "Meet Me At No Special Place" and "The Song Is Ended". CD
(Out of print. Small cutout hole through barcode & booklet, which has a few age spots.)

Average White BandPickin' Up The Pieces – The Best Of Average White Band ... CD
Rhino/Atlantic, 1970s. Used ... $5.99
One of the biggest crossover funk groups of all time – and when the smoke finally cleared, they were actually pretty darn good musicians! AWB's right up there with Kool & The Gang and Earth Wind & Fire for sheer pop 70s funkiness – and despite what you might think about a bunch of white guys noodling around like they're soul stars, you can't argue with classics like "Pick Up The Pieces", "Person To Person", "Cut The Cake", "Schoolboy Crush", "If I Ever Lose This Heaven", "Cloudy", "A Love Of Your Own", and "Work To Do" – all of which are on this set! There's a total of 18 cuts in all, and other titles include "You Got It", "Queen Of My Soul", "Got The Love", "Soul Searching", and "Your Love Is A Miracle". CD

✨✧ Ray CharlesModern Sounds In Country & Western Music ... CD
ABC/Rhino, 1962. Used ... $1.99
A classic! What seemed a silly idea at the time was true proof of Ray's genius, and the result was the most successful album of his career – and a bona-fide number one hit that rode the charts for years and years! Ray's voice works perfectly with the material, and thanks to soulful arrangements by Gil Fuller, Marty Paich, and Gerald Wilson, the whole thing comes off to perfection. Titles include "You Don't Know Me", "I Can't Stop Lovin You", "Careless Love", "You Win Again", and "Worried Mind". CD

John ColtraneHeavyweight Champion – Complete Atlantic Recordings (7CD set) ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino, Early 60s. Used 7 CDs & Book ... $43.99
An amazing set of work by John Coltrane – some of his best recordings ever, tracks that form a pivotal point between his later 50s work with Miles Davis and his mid 60s spiritual searching years. The set's unbelievably exhaustive – and includes every track that was ever issued by Coltrane on an Atlantic album, plus some great alternate takes, plus a 72 page hardbound book of photos and writings, plus a whole CD of rare material that was never issued before! (The folks at Atlantic say that they would have loved to make an even bigger set – but after a fire in their warehouse in the 70s, this one CD of tapes is all that ever remained!) The whole package is incredibly well put together – in a small discrete box with some great fold-out CD cases, and a wonderful mechanism for storage that's as great as the music in the set. Titles include "Syeeda's Song Flute", "Ole", "My Favorite Things", "Cousin Mary", "Giant Steps", "Mr Day", "Blues To Elvin", "Satellite", "Liberia", "Dahomey Dance", and sooooo much more! CD
(Out of print. A great copy with only a tiniest bit of wear at the corners.)

Miles DavisRubberband ... CD
Rhino, 1986. Used ... $9.99
Great lost work from Miles Davis – early material recorded for Warner Brothers in the mid 80s, and never released at the time – now finally uncovered from the vaults, and presented with a few slight contemporary touches! The core music is prime electric Miles funk all the way through – a great first step into the territory that he'd explore at Warner in his final years, but also with some traces of the Columbia records from the few years before – strong trumpet solos amidst bold rhythms – given new life here from instrumentalists Randy Hall and Attala Zane Giles. The music has been updated from the original tapes – with a richer sound, and a vibe that sounds less dated – and vocals have been added in a few spots, including great work from Ledisi and Lalah Hathaway. Titles include "Rubberband Of Life", "Echoes In Time/The Wrinkle", "See I See", "I Love What We Make Together", "So Emotional", "Paradise", "Maze", and "Give It Up". CD

DevoDuty Now For The Future (magenta vinyl pressing) ... LP
Warner/Rhino, 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
Devo's second album didn't scare the bejesus out of 70s rock fans in the way of their agitpop masterpiece debut, and the group's mainstream salad days of "Whip It" were still another year or two away, but nowadays we wouldn't trade Duty Now For The Future for just about any post punk album of the time! At this point the punk-era crunch was still a sizable portion of the plate – for that extra aggro kick behind the squealing synthesizers and primitive electronics. Long underappreciated, and all but ignored in the CD era, Duty. . .has excellent tracks that will always be loved by the Spuds even if WEA kept it buried too long! "Devo Corporate Anthem", "Clockout", "Wiggly World", "Blockhead", "Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA", "Red Eye" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Warner/Rhino, 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah, Y- Y- Y- Y- Y- Y- Y-eah, this is one of best art rock albums of all time – the Eno produced full length debut of Devo – the caustic, sarcastic and fun soundtrack to society's devolution! There's nothing we don't love about Devo at this point, from their unprecedented use of multimedia, to the hard to pull off fusion of sneering social and pop culture satire with good humored fun, and that's just the conceptual stuff. The songs are original and inimitably great, too, with those squeeling synth punk dynamics. Tracks include (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" (best rock cover ever?) "Jocko Homo", "Mongoloid", "Uncontrollable Urge", "Space Junk", "Come Back Jonee", "Sloppy (I Saw My Baby Gettin')" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

A record that was slightly shrouded in mystery when it was first released – but which was quickly revealed to be Green Day under another name – acting maybe with a bit more youthful freedom than under their bigger name on a bigger label! Aretha FranklinAmazing Grace (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Atlantic/Rhino, 1972. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $19.99 29.99
A legendary album – one that has Aretha Franklin returning to her roots in gospel music – but working with all the strength and power that Atlantic Records had to offer! From early years recording as a young voice alongside her father's congregation, Aretha has matured into a hell of a lead singer – and really knocks it out of the park here alongside the mighty James Cleveland, and the Southern California Community Choir! While it might have been nice to record the set back home in Detroit, the California setting for the material works perfectly to elevate Franklin to a special place in the heavens – tying together her heritage in beautiful ways, and making for another great stride forward in her career during the 70s. One of the best ideas ever for a soul music concept album – with titles that include "Mary Don't You Weep", "How I Got Over", "Precious Memories", "Wholy Holy", "Never Grow Old", "Amazing Grace", and Climbing Higher Mountains". Aretha really taps into the spiritual side of her talents here – recalling some of her gospel roots with very solid, respectful readings of Christmas tunes – bringing her best sense of mature spirit to the music, and nicely avoiding any novelty or pop Holiday numbers! Beautiful early material by Erroll Garner – sides recorded at the end of the 40s, when he was really hitting his rhythmic stride! The tunes bristle with an approach to the material that's filled with life – as Garner seems to sense a rhythm where there might not necessarily be one – and gets equal pleasure from using his piano for rhythm as he does for spinning out a gentle melody. A fantastic classic from Genesis – a record that really has the early version of the group at their height – able to spin out longform instrumental passages that would go onto shape a generation of proggers who tried to copy their sound – amidst lyrical moments that really have Peter Gabriel hitting his imaginative stride! The set's worth it alone for the amazing side-length "Supper's Ready" – a track so trippy, it's completely different than the Phil Collins-led era of Genesis – and the record features so many other great moments – like the commentary on urban housing that is "Get Em Out By Friday", the soaring keyboard-driven "Watcher Of The Skies", and the majestic "Can Utility & The Coastliners". All that and one of the strangest covers of all time too! LP, Vinyl record album

Warner/Rhino, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
The seminal debut of The Grateful Dead – a record that was maybe as important to the American psychedelic scene as the first two albums by Pink Floyd were to the UK! Like those sets, this one almost seems to come out of nowhere – still very much a part of its time, with trippiness and fuzz that other groups were certainly working with – but put together at a level that's very much its own thing, and which is undeniably worthy of all the copycats who paid it tribute in years to come. There's maybe a deeper current of blues roots here than in later years of The Dead – but in the best way possible – and titles include "The Golden Road", "Beat It On Down The Line", "Cold Rain And Snow", "Morning Dew", and "Viola Lee Blues". Rufus HarleyCourage – The Complete Atlantic Recordings ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino Handmade, Late 60s. Used 2 CDs ... $32.99
A treasure trove of music from one of the hippest jazz players ever – the legendary Rufus Harley, a saxophonist by trade, but one who could also play the bagpipes as well! Harley had a really unique way of using the bagpipes as a free-flowing modal soloing instrument – one that's clearly influenced by the best work of John Coltrane in the early 60s, and which really takes the instrument back to its original pre-Scottish roots in Africa! This wonderful set brings together 4 of Harley's best albums ever – Bagpipe Blues, Tribute To Courage, Kings/Queens, and Scotch & Soul – all gems recorded for Atlantic Records in the 60s, and which are presented here with 2 bonus tracks as well! Harley plays both bagpipes and saxophone on the record – the latter in a way that's equally compelling as the former – and the 2CD set features a whopping 28 tracks in all, supported by liner notes and other details. Titles include "Ali", "Where Have All The Flowers Gone", "Pipin The Blues", "Sufur", "Scotch & Soul", "Feeling Good", "Taurus The 20th", "Bagpipe Blues", "Kerry Dancers", "More", "Sunny", "A Tribute To Courage", "About Trane", "Eight Miles High", and "Love Is Blue". King/Rhino, Late 40s/Early 50s. Used ... $1.99
Some of the best R&B you could ever buy! Wynonie Harris was one of the all-time greats – a raw, raunchy, hard-rockin singer who was getting into more trouble with the law, ladies, and booze than most 70s rock groups combined! Wynonie's songs for King are the stuff that kick-started rock and roll – and even from today's perspective, they're still gosh darn hard-rolling, filled with subject matter like drinkin, gamblin, and sleepin around that you'll be hard-pressed to beat in most gangster hip hop albums. And on top of it all, Wynonie's got one hell of a sense of humor, put over the top perfectly by his great swinging vocal style. 18 tracks in all, and nearly all of them are gems! Titles include "Grandma Plays the Numbers", "I Feel That Old Age Coming On", "All She Wants To Do Is Rock", "Bloodshot Eyes", "Don't Take My Whiskey Away From Me", "Lovin Machine", "Good Morning Judge", and "I Like My Baby's Pudding". "Atmosphere" is the a-side, and it's a great little cut – but we'll always love this single for the fantastic "She's Lost Control" – a tune that's catchy, but also damn spooky – starting out with these cool Martin Hannett electronic pulses, then moving into this raw, building guitar line that really sends the vocals home! 12-inch, Vinyl record

One of those Joy Division 12" singles that's definitely worth owning as a separate piece of wax – because the raw power and moody energy of "Transmission" just flows perfectly out of the fast-spinning single with its extra-deep grooves! "Novelty" is great, too – one of those dark, almost scolding Ian Curtis gems – hiding bitterness that really drives the whole thing along! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ LoveLove (180 gram pressing – mono) ... LP
Elektra/Rhino, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
Love's first album – a seminal bit of Sunset Strip rock, and every bit as powerful today as it was in the 60s! The style's a bit sharper-edged than the group's classic and more familiar Forever Changes set, but it's still pretty darn great – a completely fresh batch of guitar-heavy tunes that bristle with a sound that's a lot more sinister than some of the group's contemporaries. There's a few folksy or bluesy elements in the mix, but they're almost used in a way that parodies bigger acts of the time – turning the familiar into the freaky, all with a sense of power that's simply mindblowing. Titles include the group's excellent version of Burt Bacharach's "My Little Red Book", plus "Hey Joe", "Emotions", "A Message To Pretty", "Mushroom Clouds", "And More", and "Coloured Balls Falling". Curtis Mayfield's lasting classic – and an album that the world will remember forever! Apart from being his hugely successful entry into the blacksploitation soundtrack field, this album's also a monster set of grooves that includes some of Curtis' funkiest work ever – a record that works as well as a 70s soul album as it does a hip action film score! The track list alone reads as a who's who of 70s funk – filled with gems that include "Pusherman", "Freddie's Dead", "Little Child Runnin' Wild", "Give Me Your Love", and "Superfly" – and the rest of the set is equally great, essential listening throughout! Plus 2 bonus tracks, the single mix of "Freddie's Dead" and "Superfly". CD

Atlantic/Rhino, 1955. Used ... $2.99
A classic album of Cole Porter tunes – sung by Mabel Mercer with just a bit of tinkling piano in the background! The overall sound's a bit older than you might guess from the date of the record – a mode that takes most of the Porter tunes relatively straight, served up in Mercer's trilling style of vocals – which have more of a 20s approach to the material than other 50s singers who were making Porter swing a bit more. Backing is by Cy Walter or Stan Freeman on piano, plus a bit of bass by Frank Carroll – and titles include "Ours", "Where Oh Where", "After You", "So In Love", "Looking At You", "Ace In The Hole", and "It's Delovely". Atlantic/Rhino, 1974. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Charles Mingus at Carnegie Hall – but playing here with relaxed and intimate feel that's not what you might expect from the staid setting! The album features 2 long tracks – both done in more of a jam session mode than any other Charles Mingus recordings we can think of. Both numbers are Ellington classics – "C Jam Blues" and "Perdido" – showcasing Mingus' late fascination with the Duke, but in a way that still preserves all of the modern inventions of his own earlier work. As on much of the best Mingus albums from the time, there's a real focus on the strengths of the soloists here – players who include Roland Kirk on tenor and stritch, Hamiet Bluiett on baritone, Jon Faddis on trumpet, John Handy on alto and tenor, Charles McPherson on alto, and Don Pullen on piano – all of whom really play with some sharp edges and bold notes! Later material by Mingus – and very much an exploration of rootsier styles, with a slight modernist bent. Doug Hammond and Honey Gordon sing vocals on the track "Moves" – and other titles include "Canon", "Opus 4", and "Opus 3" – all by Mingus – plus Pullen's "Newcomer" and Adams' "Flowers For A Lady". A rare relic from the early Canadian years of Joni Mitchell – a never-released recording done at a radio station in Saskatoon – back at a time when she was still known as the 19 year old Joni Anderson! The songs are mostly traditional, but handled with guitar work and vocals by Joni that definitely point the path to her genius work to come – a quality that shows that even back in the first part of the 60s, artists who were part of the folk movement were forging so many of the sounds that would spring free in the second half of the decade. Joni did new cover art for these long-lost tapes – and titles include "Tell Old Bill", "Nancy Whiskey", "Anathea", "Copper Kettle", "Fare Thee Well", "Dark As A Dungeon", and "House Of The Rising Sun". There's also the full Live At Canterbury House performance – which was also issued as a 3LP set – and the Early Joni 1963 album too. The package marks this amazing shift from straighter folk to the kind of special sound that would soon make Mitchell one of the most important female artists of the late 60s – and the box features 119 tracks in all, including 29 original tunes by Joni presented here for the first time ever – plus a 40 page book and a super-cool box! A rare treasure from Joni Mitchell – live material recorded at a venue in Ann Arbor, captured here a year before her initial studio album on Reprise Records! The huge package brings together songs from three different sets – nine of which have never been issued before – and there's also a fair bit of conversation from Joni between the songs, presented at a level that shows just what a unique talent she was right at the start – a standout songsmith, and a singer who brings all these inflections to the music that show that she was already breaking free of her roots in folk music! Rhino, 2018. New Copy ... $11.99 15.98
The first-ever Christmas album by The Monkees – recorded in 2018, many decades after their famous show went off the air! The images on the front show a youthful version of the group – but the vocals are all by the aged members of the second fab four – which even means that Mike Nesmith got back into the studio with Peter, Mickey, and Davy to sing some lines. All tracks feature an individual member of the group in the lead – and one of Peter Tork's tracks is a spare duet with James Lee Stanley on guitar. But most of the other numbers have a fuller feel, especially those with Andy Partridge of XTC, who really gets the 60s spirit right. Other guests include Peter Buck of REM and Rivers Cuomo of Weezer – and titles include "Snowfall", "Christmas Party", "Unwrap You At Christmas", "What Would Santa Do", "Mele Kalikimaka", "House Of Broken Gingerbread", "Merry Christmas Baby", and a great version of "Wonderful Christmastime". Reprise/Rhino, 1974. Used 2CD ... $16.99
A gem of an album from Randy Newman – a masterpiece of understated with from the mid 70s, and one of his most fully-conceived records for Warner Brothers! The album offers up a vision of the south, past and present, through Newman's eyes – eyes that are partially clouded by the distance of the scene seen from the vantage point of smoggy LA, but which still manage to pull out various strands of life with surprising poignancy. It's easy to write this one off as some sort of slap against the face of the backward south in the 70s, but Newman actually approaches his subjects with some sort of subtle tenderness – not nearly as mean as you might think on first listen, as evidenced by the beautiful orchestrations he penned for the sessions. Titles include "Birmingham", "Marie", "Rednecks", "Louisiana 1927", "Rollin", "Back On My Feet Again", and "Wedding In Cherokee County". CD features a bonus demo version of "Marie" – and a great set of notes! Bonus disc is titled Johnny Cutler's Birthday, and includes 13 tracks! CD

✨✧ Otis ReddingDock Of The Bay ... CD
Volt/Rhino, 1968. Used ... $3.99
A very important crossover soul album – a huge hit for Otis Redding that was released after his tragic death in December 1967 – but it's also hard to say if it would have had the impact it did had Redding not passed while the LP was still in production. In a way, the record sort of set the stage for the mythologies of pop stars that would surround the tragedies in the coming years of the late 60s – with liner notes on the back by Jon Landau about the impact of Redding's work and passing on the rest of the music industry, which would be even more charged with meaning to folks buying the album at the time, who certainly knew that Redding had cut "Dock of the Bay" a few days before his death, and had missed its meteoric rise to #1 after his passing. And in fact, the album itself is more of a loose collection of tracks pulled from singles and other sources to cash in on Redding's passing – and includes odd numbers like "The Huckle Buck", which had previously appeared on a Stax promo album, or "Tramp", his famous funky duet with Carla Thomas. Other titles include "I'm Coming Home", "Ole Man Trouble", "Open The Door", and "Let Me Come On Home". CD

Roger (Roger Troutman)Many Facets Of Roger (expanded & remastered) ... CD
Rhino, 1981. Used ... $13.99
There's many facets of Roger – and they're all pretty darn funky! From this vantage point, all we can think of is that Roger Troutman must have had some sort of crystal ball to see into the hip hop sampling future – either that, or he was busy cooking up west coast gangster funk drones in some secret So Cal laboratory! Whatever the case, though, the record's a classic in the Troutman/Zapp catalog – and features a sparkling west coast take on electro – offered up with lots of popping basslines, snapping electric kickdrums, and a truckfull of vocoder! There's also some pretty nice guitar in the mix – especially on the good jazzy groover "Chunk Of Sugar", which sounds like it's from a completely different record. Other tracks include "Maxx Axe", "Do It Roger", "So Ruff, So Tuff", and "Blue". This remastered edition includes the bonus tracks "I Heard It Through The Grapevine (Part 1) (Single Version)", "Do It Roger (Single Version)", and the previously unreleased "Superman". CD

StoogesHave Some Fun – Live At Ungano's ... CD
Rhino Handmade/Wounded Bird, 1970. New Copy ... $6.99 11.99
Raw, incendiary live material from The Stooges, circa 1970 – recorded at NYC dive bar Ungano's, right around the time that Fun House was released! They blast through nearly all the tracks from Fun House here, minus "LA Blues", and with the rare "Have Some Fun/My Dream Is Dead", which as far as we know, was never released before Rhino Handmade dug up this incredible recording. The source was a reel-to-reel capture by someone in the audience, so the sound is a bit rough – which is of little concern when what we have here is a really important building block in creation of punk rock! Plus, the whole thing also begins with "Going To Ungano's" – street conversation that makes you feel like you're outside, going into the show. CD

Sire/Rhino, 1979. Used CD & DVD-Audio ... $24.99
A really tremendous album from The Talking Heads – and a set that moves far past their already-great early records, to really show a rhythmic complexity we never would have expected! Brian Eno is helping the group in the studio again here, and the record really shows both David Byrne and Eno's late 70s fascination with global rhythms – elements that are often used in spare, simple little ways to really help inflect the tunes with a playful imagination that goes way beyond the colder post-punk and new wave of most of their contemporaries! The balance of previous aesthetics with these new grooves is wonderful – heard to great effect on the classic club cut "I Zimbra" – but brewing up strongly underneath on gems that include "Mind", "Paper", "Cities", "Life During Wartime", "Memories Can't Wait", "Air", "Heaven", "Animals", "Electric Guitar", and "Drugs". Sire/Rhino, 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
Early genius from the Talking Heads – a set that's got a much sparer sound than most of their later work, and a surprisingly groovy feel overall! The starkness of the group's debut is still very much in place – lots of tight interplay between bass and guitar – but the rhythms are also strongly pronounced too, and often get a bit funky at times – in ways that almost outdo most of the artier punk and funk that was to come in the next few years of the New York scene! Brian Eno produced the album with the group, and his sonic sensibilities really add a lot to the record – in ways that are much more subtle than his own 70s albums, but still a very big part of the set. Titles include "Thank You For Sending Me An Angel", "With Your Love", "The Good Thing", "Warning Sign", "The Girls Want To Be With The Girls", "Found A Job", "Artists Only", "I'm Not In Love", "Take Me To The River", "Stay Hungry", and "The Big Country". Some of the most compelling grooves the Talking Heads ever recorded – a set that sparkles with imaginative touches, and railroads forward on a wave of complicated rhythms! The sound is brilliant throughout – a genre-less approach that sheds the group's earlier art nerd aesthetic for one that's clearly influenced by late 70s funk and club – but takes that influence in a whole new direction! The whole thing's even fresher than some of the artier downtown moments that bubbled around at the time – as David Byrne and the group actually managed to cross over big with the record – hitting not only urban markets, but also getting some play from the classic rock crowd too. Brian Eno produced, and co-wrote the songs with the group – and some great Green World-esque electronics bubble through the mix, and hold the whole thing together beautifully. The album's overflowing with tracks, all recorded by producer Richard Perry while Tim was strumming and singing at London's Royal Albert Hall – reworking old songs with a very strange vibe, leaving his imprint on some more contemporary numbers, and acting maybe more like an entertainer than you'd hear on record. Rhino, 1960s. Used 4CDs ... $94.99
An amazing little box set – not just for the music, but also for the incredible package and 200 page book that's inside! The set's got a look that might not make you put this one center stage in your record collection – but as far as compilations go, it's a heck of a great one – and serves up 120 tunes that not only hit all the bases of girl group material in the 60s, but also go way way deeper, and offer some incredible bits that we'd never heard before! The whole thing comes in a "hat box" styled package – and features 4 CDs of music, plus a wonderful 200 page book filled with photos, images, essays, artists' reflections, and even track-by-track commentary on the tunes! A pretty great deal at this price! CD
(Out of print, in original box.)
