✨✧ Monday MichiruFalling/Restless/Early Dawn (Song For Nikita) ... CD
Polydor (Japan), 2000. New Copy (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
Jazzy, lovely, and completely soulful! "Fallin" begins with a soaring drum break, riffing away as tight piano lines join in, along with Monday's scatting vocals. The cut's got a classy jazzy sound that's totally 70s – but with enough of a groove to work well on a modern dancefloor. "Restless" is a bit more straight funk – with breakbeats and Fender Rhodes on the intro, and some great vocals by Monday that remind us a bit of Marlena Shaw's classic work. "Early Dawn" is a sweet jazzy ballad, with flute and guitar, in a mellower mode that reminds us of her New Directions single. Another clear winner from one of the best soul artists around – and worth the Japanese price tag! CD
(Please Note – CD case has a sticker in Japanese on the back.)

Flaming LipsIn A Priest Driven Ambulance ... LP
Restless/WEA, 1990. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99 21.98
An important pre-fame record from Flaming Lips – a set when all the right pieces were in place, but still finding the right way to come together – a bit like the way that most important UK psych bands of the 60s sounded in 1966! By that, we mean that there's equal parts garage and trippiness going on here – tighter songs than later, maybe a bit more upfront rock energy – which, at times, almost has these guys feeling like a psych version of The Replacements, or a group of that nature. Yet the Lips are clearly finding a way to state themselves quite clearly – carving out their own space on tunes that include "God Walks Among Us Now", "Shine On Sweet Jesus", "Stand In Line", "Take Meta Mars", "Five Stop Mother Superior Rain", "Rainin Babies", "Mountain Side", and a surprising cover of "What A Wonderful World". WirePink Flag ... CD
Restless Retro, 1977. Used ... $9.99
One of greatest of all British punk era records – released in '77 and one that transcends mid-to-late 70s punk cultural baggage better than just about any other – a real benchmark! Wire kept it short and sweet on Pink Flag – with 21 tracks in about 35 minutes – and it's as artful as it is succinct. They'd prove to be as creatively ambitious as any of their peers and the brevity Pink Flag would soon make way for experimental flourishes that are ultimately just as important and influential, but this still might be their best. Includes "Reuters", "Field Day For The Sundays", "Three Girl Rumba", "Ex Lion Tamer", "The Commercial", "Strange", "Different To Me", "12 X U", "Start To Move", "Lowdown", "Surgeon's Girl", "Pink Flag" and more. Jan & DeanRide The Wild Surf ... LP
Liberty, Mid 60s. Very Good ... $2.99
Plenty of surf number stepping out here – but often with that great second-chapter Beach Boys mode – that pre-Pet Sounds style that's often got some darker currents underneath! The pair are great in the lead, and get a bit of harmony support from The Fantastic Baggys – and some great instrumental assistance from Hal Blaine – who's really knocking it out of the park with a host of west coast wonderfuls – all produced by Jan with a nice echoey vibe! Titles include "Ride The Wild Surf", "Tell Em I'm Surfin", "The Restless Surfer", "Skateboarding (part 1)", "Surfin Wild", and "The Submarine Races". LP, Vinyl record album

James WhiteJames White's Flaming Demonics (picture disc) ... LP
Ze (Italy), 1983. Near Mint- ... $16.99
Later work by enigmatic sax firebrand James White, aka James Chance – this time dubbing his clattering cacophony the Flaming Demonics – a more funk and free jazz focused effort than his punkier incarnations! Most of the tracks are long, exhausting instrumental maelstroms – led by White's dissonant alto sax honking, with a big backdrop of baritone sax, trumpet, funky guitar and bass, and occasional girly back up vocals. James even sits at Farfisa and piano on a couple tunes! Tracks include "The Devil Made Me Do It", "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams", "Rantin' & Ravin'", "The Natives Are Restless", "Caravan/It Don't Mean A Thing/Melt Yourself Down" and "I Danced With A Zombie". VariousHillbillies In Hell Vol 9 – Country Music's Tormented Testament 1952 to 1974 ... LP
Omni/Iron Mountain Analog Research (Australia), 1950s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... $25.99 29.99
Seems like those hillbillies are always heading to hell – and that always means great music for us! The set's a perfect summation of the way that country music walks the line between saints and sinners, prayer and pleasure – and the songs here are all themes of damnation – sometimes little narratives that tell the story of a choice that can't be taken back, sometimes thoughts of regret for paths taken, and sometimes just pleas for others to find their way back to the fold! The set list is every bit as great as the previous volumes, and filled with some real heavy-hitters that are just killer country, no matter what the theme – with tunes that include "The First Mrs Jones" by Porter Wagoner, "Ghost Of A Honky Tonk Slave" by Tex Williams, "The Memories Are Restless Tonight" by Eddie Noack, "World Planets" by Art Pettibone, "Saturday Satan Sunday Saint" by Ernest Tubb, "Down From Dover" by Dolly Parton, "Dark Moon" by Bonnie Guitar, "Goodbye World Goodbye" by Sunshine Boys Quartet, "Satan Lied To Me" by The Louvin Brothers, and "Please Don't Go Topless Mother" by Troy Hess – which might be worth the price of the collection alone! ✨✧ Matt BerryMusic For Insomniacs ... CD
Acid Jazz (UK), 2014. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first full length album from Matt Berry, and maybe one of the most unusual – given that the set features two very long tracks that each really live up to the title – a spacious mix of keyboards, electronics, and wordless voices – all served up with a very dreamy sound! The scope of the creation here is great – as Berry plays a host of vintage keyboards himself, all layered together beautifully, and in a way that has a lot more dynamic energy than you might expect. This isn't ambient music – and more like two long soundscapes for the restless sleeper – each running over 20 minutes in length! CD

✨✧ CrampsPsychedelic Jungle ... LP
IRS, 1981. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Cramps at their early 80s best – and quite possibly their best ever album! Psychedelic Jungle finds The Cramps-style trashy, ghoulish garage-punk-surf-abilly stomp in full headed glory. Their slow, slinky style at it's most lucid, really – Lux doesn't sound like he's getting ready to choke here – and slightly cleaner, still primitive production works perfectly. Essential! Includes "Green Fuz", "Goo Goo Muck", "Green Door", "The Natives Are Restless", "Primitive. "Caveman", "Rockin Bones", "Voodoo Idol", "The Crusher", "Don't Eat Stuff Off The Sidewalk" and more. Really kids, don't eat that stuff off the sidewalk...bad for ya. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Patrick CorneliusThis Should Be Fun ... CD
Posi tone, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Patrick Cornelius steps out here both as a strong leader, and as a great songwriter too – on a set that's filled with almost all original material from the pen of the alto saxophonist – tunes that have a strong sense of color and verve, which makes the record one of the most illuminating to date from Cornelius! The group's also got a real strength in the piano of John Escreet – who has some sharper edges that really enrich the vibe of the record – and Patrick's alto lines are also balanced with a nice sense of depth from trombonist Nick Vayenas, a player we don't know at all – but who seems to be finding his own with the set. The rest of the group features Ben Allison on bass and Mark Ferber on drums – and titles include "Precious Souls", "Telescope", "Big Pictures", "This Should Be Fun", "For Morgan", and "Restless Willow". Jazzwerkstatt (Germany), 2015. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We love these guys to death – even if we always get out of breath saying their name in a hurry – and they really shine strongly here, on a long live album that perfectly captures their non-stop sense of imagination and restless creativity! Unlike some of their other recent projects, which were thematic in nature, this concert performance has the group moving through so many different modes at once – often in the short space of a longer song – with that strong sense of jazz history that's always made them so unique – especially in the way that they find to set a whole new fire to sounds we thought we already knew so well! Moppa Elliott drives the group on some beautiful bass – and the rest of the lineup includes Peter Evans on trumpet and piccolo trumpet, Jon Irabagon on tenor and sopranino sax, and Kevin Shea on drums and electronic – on titles tha tinclude "Pen Argyl/Ulysses At Troy/Andover/Blue Ball/Effort Patience Dilligence", "My Delightful Muse/Hideaway/A Night In Tunisia", and "Is Granny Spry/Dunkelbergers/Baden/Little Hope". Drag City, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A long awaited reunion of west coast indie psych pop masterminds Ty Segall & Tim Presley aka White Fence! It's a gem, and best of all, not a sequel or rehash of thier beloved earlier collaboratorative LP Hair, this one's got it's own vibe! Most of the songs are really short, given it a restless energy that's really great – still a masterclass in neo-classic garage psych, a la Hair, but bursting from one tune to the next at an exciting pace. Includes "Beginning", "Please Don't Leave", "Room Connection", "Body Behavior", "Good Boy", "Hey Joel, Where You Going With That", "Rock Flute", "A Nod", "Other Way", "Prettiest Dog", "She Is Gold", "Tommy's Place", "My Friend" and more. Freddie Gibbs & MadlibPinata ... CD
Madlib Invazion, 2014. New Copy ... $8.99 15.98
Smart , streetwise raps from Freddie Gibbs, backed by restlessly inventive production from Madlib – here on one of the best records yet on 'Lib's own Madlib Invazion imprint! If you'll forgive us a little bit of repetition – because we KNOW we've written this before – there's just something extra riveting about Madlib's production work for straight shooting, street lingo slinging, no nonsense MCs. The freewheeling inspiration and bottomless depth of unpredictable sample funk is there, as always. It's leaner, tighter and with a thicker backdrop of beats. Gibbs is sharply on point throughout here, and if it seems like an oddball pairing at first glance, rest assured, these guys work GREAT together. Guests include Danny Brown – who drops some top shelf wordplay of his own on "High" – plus the Wu legend Raekwon on "Bomb", Domo Genius & Earl Sweatshirt on "Robes", Domo Genius, G-Whiz, Mac Miller and more on the title cut, and more. Other titles include "Supplier", "Scarface", "Deeper", "Harold's", "Thuggin'", "Real" and "Uno". CD

Madlib Invazion, 2014. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
The restlessly inventive Madlib beats and production for Pinata, the excellent duo project with MC Freddie Gibbs! If you'll forgive us a little bit of repetition – because we KNOW we've written this before – there's just something extra riveting about Madlib's production work for straight-shooting, street lingo-slinging, no nonsense MCs. The freewheeling inspiration and bottomless depth of unpredictable sample funk is there, as always. It's just leaner, tighter and with a thicker backdrop of beats than on some the more freeform Madlib projects. We wouldn't dream of fronting on Freddie Gibbs' impeccable rhymes on the vocal version, but these moody instros are incredible, on par with Madlib's best work. Titles include "High", "Bomb", "Robes", "Scarface", "Deeper", "Harold's", "Thuggin'", "Real", "Uno", "Pinata" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
