✨✧ Restless Soul with Zansika & Shea SoulNippon Exclusive EP – Draw Your Bone (voc, inst, reprise)/Something Inside (voc, reprise) ... 12-inch
Especial (Japan), 2007. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Restless Soul magic from the mighty Phil Asher – getting plenty of help here on both cuts from Mark De Clive-Lowe! "Draw Your Bow" features soulful vocals from Shea Soul – slinking around the keyboards and beats nicely, with a depth that gives the track a classic soul feel overall – thanks in part to Phil's straightforward rhythms on the cut – more 70s funky than some of his other more cosmic work in years past! "Something Inside" is slightly more skittish, but still plenty warm and funky – a wicked little groove that features lead vocals from Zansika, and more great keyboards from Mark De Clive-Lowe! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Retta YoungYoung & Restless ... LP
All Platinum/Expansion (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic sweet soul album – and one of our favorite records ever from the New Jersey soul empire of All-Platinum Records! The set's got a spacey soul sound that's really wonderful – quite different than some of the clubbier modes that other female singers were using at the time – and the record features both production and songwriting work by Harry Ray and Al Goodman of The Moments, who give Retta Young the same sweet touch they brought to their own excellent records for the label! The album's one of those really special female soul sets that goes way beyond expectation or familiar modes – a record we'd put right up there with other rare classics by singers like Ann Sexton or Gloria Scott. Titles include "I Love My Jim", "Now Or Never", "We're So In Love", "Really Really", "My Love Is On His Way", and "Let's Make Up For Lost Time". LP, Vinyl record album

Ennio MorriconeOnce Upon A Time In America ... CD
Restless, 1983. Used ... $12.99
Magical mainstream Morricone – a sublime score for Sergio Leone's epic tale of gangland growth in the 20th century! Although penned for a wider audience, most of the best Morricone elements are still at play in this soundtrack – a great sense of space and timing, and some key use of spare, isolated instruments – including the pan flute of George Zamfir, an odd choice given the New York setting of the film, but one that comes off beautifully in the mix. Strings back up most of the tunes, but they're never too sleepy – just slightly sentimental, but in a really good way. Titles include "Childhood Memories", "Once Upon A Time In America", "Cockeye's Song", "Childhood Poverty", "Friends", "Photographic Memories", "Speakeasy", and "Poverty". CD also features some bonus tracks too! CD

Alfa/Restless, 1981. Used ... $9.99
We're not certain where this falls in the order of YMO Japanese releases, but it's definitely a bit after their stunning US debut, and we're pretty certain never released outside Japan. A bit more stripped down, but still amazing electro pop from some of the true originators of the genre. 10 numbers in all, including "Pure Jam", "Neve Tanz", "Stairs", "Seoul Music", "Light In Darkness", "Taiso", "Gradated Gaes", "Key", "Prologue" and "Epilogue". ✨✧ Yellow Magic OrchestraSolid State Survivor ... CD
Alfa/Restless, 1979. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Tremendous work from this groundbreaking electro pop trio – a group who seem to compress all the best electric energy on both sides of the planet at the time – creating a leaner, catchier take on some of the hippest German modes, mixing them with their own quirky energy, and paving the way for a huge amount of global acts to follow! The songs here are still better than so much that came later – a fantastic late 70s statement from the trio of Haruomi Hosono, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Yukihiro Takahasi – who here seem even more confident than on their debut, with even enough gumption to remake The Beatles' "Day Tripper" as an electro theme. Other tracks include "Rydeen", "Technopolis", "Insomnia", "Solid State Survivor", and "Absolute Ego Dance". CD

✨✧ Flaming LipsIn A Priest Driven Ambulance ... LP
Restless/WEA, 1990. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An important pre-fame record from Flaming Lips – a set when all the right pieces were in place, but still finding the right way to come together – a bit like the way that most important UK psych bands of the 60s sounded in 1966! By that, we mean that there's equal parts garage and trippiness going on here – tighter songs than later, maybe a bit more upfront rock energy – which, at times, almost has these guys feeling like a psych version of The Replacements, or a group of that nature. Yet the Lips are clearly finding a way to state themselves quite clearly – carving out their own space on tunes that include "God Walks Among Us Now", "Shine On Sweet Jesus", "Stand In Line", "Take Meta Mars", "Five Stop Mother Superior Rain", "Rainin Babies", "Mountain Side", and a surprising cover of "What A Wonderful World". Quality (Japan), 2004. Used ... $8.99
A free-thinking set of dancefloor tracks from all points global – all exclusive to this collection, and pulled together in tribute to the 10th anniversary of Japan's mighty Kyoto Jazz Massive! The work on the set is from some of the best of the British, American, and European underground – and is all very much in the rich spirit of KJM's own work of the past few years – a fresh new fusion of future jazz, dancefloor funk, and cosmic soul – all propelled by a sense of joy, life, and energy that's simply boundless! ✨✧ Little FeatDixie Chicken ... CD
Warner, 1973. Used ... $1.99
The third album from Little Feat – and one that brings a bit of Crescent City rock and soul into the mix – but it's still Little Feat, so it's got a restless creative energy that's beautifully tough to classify! There's quite a bit of soul influences in the mix – especially the tunes with the female chorus backing vocals. Not a Dixie rock cliche to be found anywhere on it, either! Includes "Dixie Chicken", "Two Trains", "Roll Um Easy", "Kiss It Off", "Fat Man In The Bathtub", "Fool Yourself" and more. CD

Chris McGregor's Brotherhood Of BreathBremen To Bridgewater ... CD
Cuneiform, 1971/1975. Used 2 CDs ... $14.99
3 sets of recordings from Chris McGregor's legendary Brotherhood Of Breath ensemble of the 70s – live dates from Bremen, Germany and Bridgwater, UK – hence the title! The style here is a looser extrapolation of the Brotherhood Of Breath sound heard on the group's studio LPs – and a fair bit of these tunes are arguably more outside, and more experimental – especially in the horn work, which opens up with plenty of sharp edges! Players include Harry Beckett, Mongezi Feza, and Marc Charig on trumpets; Elton Dean, Dudu Pukwana, and Mike Osborne on alto saxes; Evan Parker, Alan Skidmore, and Gary Windo on tenors; Radu Malfatti and Malcolm Griffiths on trombones; Harry Miller on bass, Chris McGregor on piano, and either Louis Moholo or Keith Bailey on drums. 2CD set features 8 numbers from 1971 in Bremen, and 8 more from 1975 in Bridgwater. Titles include "Do It", "Kongi's Theme", "Now", "The Bride", "Funky Boots March", "Think Of Something", "Sonia", "Untitled Original", "Kwhalo", "Yes Please", and "Restless". CD

Monday Michiru4 Seasons ... CD
Polydor (Japan), 2000. Used 2 CDs ... $24.99
An incredibly sophisticated album from one of our favorite modern soul singers! This stunning 2CD set goes farther than Monday Michiru's ever gone before – into territory that bridges together modern soul, jazz vocals, Latin rhythms, and a complicated set of emotional soundscapes that show Monday as a much more mature singer than ever before. The 2CD set features a total of 20 tracks in all – some from the "4 Seasons" cycle of eps that Monday released over the year 2000, and many more that are exclusive to the album. We'd only gotten a hint of the place she was heading with some of the singles – and this full album really comes together in an amazing way, with a wealth of influences and styles that reminds us of Nobukazu Takemura's legendary Child's View album. Titles include "Tahitian Xmas", "Restless", "Early Dawn", "The Island", "Do It Again", "Kohyo", "Something To Believe In", "Chasing After The Sun", "Mysteries Of Life", "Fallin", "Stop & Listen", "New Beginnings", and "Chances". NnekaSoul Is Heavy ... CD
Yo Mama/Decon, 2011. Used ... $0.99
The best yet from Nneka – a creative beacon for modern artists balancing political and social lyricism with universally resonant hip hop soul! The Nigeria-born, Germany-based singer bridges genres masterfully, skirting trends and delivering straight up excellent, unique songs. Reggae rhythms and hip hop beats along with some great use of horns, keys and other instrumentation – led by Nneka's songwriting and voice out front. A core facet of her songs is the search for peace in a world of struggle, something most of us can relate to, and her perspective is unique and beautiful. Includes "Lucifer (No Doubt)", "Sleep" feat Ms Dynamite, "My Home", "Shining Star", "Restless", "Don't Even Think", "J", "Stay", "Soul Is Heavy", "Do You Love Me Now", "VIP", "God Knows Why" feat Black Thought, "Still I Rise" feat Wuru Samba & Mohammed and more. Lonnie PlaxicoWest Side Stories ... CD
Plaxmusic, 2006. Used ... $12.99
Easily one of the most compelling albums so far from bassist Lonnie Plaxico – a record that draws inspiration from Lonnie's roots on Chicago's west side, and which also features some great guest appearances from Cassandra Wilson, Ravi Coltrane, Steve Coleman, and others! Tracks are often done in an angular mode that has plenty of modern edges, but never gets too bassy – at least not in the funkier way of some of Plaxico's earlier work – and the rhythms have some really nicely creative changes that make the mood of the tunes shift back and forth with a restless sense of energy that's explored nicely by the soloists. Titles include "Robin's Dance", "West Side Stories", "I Want It To Be", "Speaking In Tongues", "Your Love Speaks To Me", "I Want To Know What Love Is", and "Duke It Out". CD

Rod St. JamesHas Anybody Seen The Superstar ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), Early 70s. New Copy ... $22.99
A beautiful album of free soul tracks – with a mixture of sweet 70s soul and slightly folksy rock, in a blend that's hard to describe, but really wonderful! We'd shelve this one next to Alzo & Udine, Ellen McIlwaine, Batteaux, and other obscure early 70s crossover artists who never made the big time – and like them, Rod St James is a brilliant talent who really deserves wider recognition, even within the realm of soul collectors. The album features all original compositions by Rod, with arrangements crafted with the help of Cash McCall – and titles include "Has Anybody Seen The Superstar?", "Wandering Minstrel", "Mr Coffey", "Now Is The Time", "Pisces Child", "Born To Ride The Restless Wind", and "Let It Shine". Various90s House & Garage Vol 2 – Compiled By Joey Negro & Neil Pierce ... CD
Z Records (UK), 1990s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
Joey Negro's given us some great collections of club music from the 70s and 80s – and he's equally well-skilled at picking the best underground tracks from the 90s – a decade in which some of Joey's own music was staring to get some heavy play too! This set's not your usual dance music from the time – as these cuts are all nice and deep, with a very soulful vibe – almost a return to classic club styles, with warmer production and instrumentation – but given a bit more of a house music kick in the rhythms underneath! Music is from a range of global sources, but also resonates with the most soulful currents on the New York scene in the early 90s – in a list of tracks that includes "I'll Make U Happy Baby (x-tended club mix)" by Ele Ferrer, "100% Power" by Slam Mode, "Anthem (Kerri Chandler distant run mix)" by N-Joi, "Makin Love (Mentalinstrum rmx)" by Cassio Ware, "Blow (Restless Soul poetic peak time mix)" by Fini Dolo, "Music On My Mind (Smack Productions mix)" by Mental Instrum, "All Night Long" by Alexis P Suter, "Moonbeamz" by Abacus, "Let Us All Be Friends (Colonel Abrams orig mix)" by Mama's Children with Lee Truesdale, "Flying Saucer (Kings Of Tomorrow rmx)" by United Future Organization, "A Naked Theme (source mix 1)" by Sound Source, and "Rock Me (Marshall Jefferson deep underground dub)" by Screamin Rachel. 2CD version features 23 tracks in all! ✨✧ Zoot SimsZoot Sims' Party (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Choice/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Not as much of a party as you might expect from the title, but quite a lively little album – and possibly one of Zoot's best from the 70s! There's a tightly fluid feel to this record that we really love a lot – not one that's electric or slick, but served up by a great backing trio that includes Jimmy Rowles on piano, Mickey Roker on drums, and Bob Cranshaw on bass – all coming together in ways that often groove slightly, which is a real surprise for an album by Zoot – and a very nice surprise at that! Zoot himself plays both tenor and soprano sax, and although some of the tunes here are familiar ones, they're taken with unusual arrangements and plenty of personal focus on the solos. Titles include "Fred", "Restless", "Caravan", "Dream Dancing", "The Very Thought Of You" – plus the bonus tracks "Love Me" and "Getting Sentimental Over You". CD

The restlessly inventive Madlib beats and production for Pinata, the excellent duo project with MC Freddie Gibbs! If you'll forgive us a little bit of repetition – because we KNOW we've written this before – there's just something extra riveting about Madlib's production work for straight-shooting, street lingo-slinging, no nonsense MCs. Dino bridged the coffee shop folk scene with sprawling psychedelia on this album. He has the Tim Buckley kind of stream-of-conciousness restlessness, and the record's full of lovely acoustic guitar accompanied by unlikely horn and flute flourishes. Dino was hardly a conventional singer – so the production hand of Bob Dylan knob twirler Bob Johnston couldn't be a better fit.
