A great little set from keyboardist Lyman Woodard – and one that's definitely got some of the Latin flavor promised by the spelling in the title! Woodard's still playing some mighty nice organ and electric piano lines, but the group here also has some added Latin percussion at the bottom – and this expansive, warmly soulful sound that almost reminds us of some of the late 70s Fania fusion funk records – especially work by Mongo Santamaria when he was using a lot of Fender Rhodes! A young Regina Carter is on the record – both vocalizing and playing violin – and the tracks are long, and really compelling – with a complexity that's different than other Woodard albums, yet still just the right sort of groove. Titles include "Itanita", "Don't Stay Away", "Dedication", and "And The Ship Sails On". CD

We've been loving the vibes of Stefon Harris for years – and each new record with his Blackout group seems to have the musician pushing his envelope more and more! The vibes are still very strongly in place, but there's also some soulful elements that really shine through in the overall arrangements – linking Harris' more modern inclinations with a style that might help him grab all those ears he's deserved over the years, but who've not yet found his music! The set's not commercial at all – but has some qualities that put Stefon's righteous musical mission a bit more upfront – as he takes on songs by Wayne Shorter, Horace Silver, Bobby Timmons, and even the team of Bobby Hutcherson and Eugene McDaniels – whose "Now" is one of the best cuts on the record, delivered here with vocals from Jean Baylor and violin from Regina Carter. An album that has reedman Gregory Tardy opening up a whole new chapter in his music – blowing clarinet throughout the record, but with all the soulful depth of his work on tenor! In some ways, Tardy's using the instrument a bit like John Coltrane when he moved to soprano sax – a leaner, more fluid way of expressing himself – often over rhythms that have some modal currents that really let the instrument weave out these beautifully colorful lines! The rest of the group features Taber Gable on piano – a hell of a force who really grounds the proceedings and sets up the groove – plus Regina Carter on violin, Matthew Parrish on bass, and Alvester Garnett on drums.
