A decade since their previous effort, and 14 years since their previous masterpiece, Portishead returns with Third – and, oh, what a mindblowing third act. The first thing you'll realize about Third is that it's not Dummy Part 3 – a welcome and surprising trait – but it does take their earlier way with a spooky, brooding and ominous framework to new dimensions. Secondly, there's no obvious single – it's to be taken as a whole. Beth Gibbons's vocals are as soul wrenching as ever, and an overall stark, melancholic beauty connects Portishead '08 to the old stuff, but they go deeper. Some bits are quite minimalist, wringing emotion from a low strum, a distant chime, or a haunting bit of dissonance – other parts are more richly layered and even a bit jarring. Pulp cinematic aura, feedback textured psychedelia, haunting European pop, and traces of field recorded folk flavor the sound – they've dabbled in all of these elements before – but never with this particular feel. The sound of epiphany. How many acts in the pop realm create a whole new style with a classic album, and then pull off something nearly as great almost 15 years later, without ripping themselves off? Add Portishead to that small list. We'll call '08 early, this is the best pop album of the year. A mindblowing bit of psych from the late 60s – and a record that has way more to offer than just the usual fuzzy guitar, thanks to key use of moog, theremin, and tape tricks! There's a really freaky feel to the record from the start – a quality that's hipper than most of the underground at the time, almost an ironic take on the usual – sometimes through thoughtful lyricism, other times via a more experimental music approach that almost hints at some 70s prog and post-prog styles – yet presented here in much shorter form, without any overindulgence at all! The record's one that really transcends its time – a compelling little set that offers plenty more than just its existence as a rare relic – and which actually features many tunes that would make perfect covers for the contemporary scene today. Sublime "second chapter" work from Soft Machine – the group's first five albums for Columbia Records, each of them essential – and packaged here in these cool mini-LP sleeves! The vibe here is great – stretched-out, very jazzy work – with less of the offbeat corners of the group's first two records, but much more sophistication overall – yet without any of the overindulgent modes that hampered so many of their generation! Given that some of the tracks here are very long, and that at least two of the records were originally 2LP sets, you get a heck of a lot of music in this box – and a completely solid chunk of work that represents the group at their best! 46 tracks in all – out-bloody-rageous! CD

There's nothing drone-like about this album at all – as the set's a soaring bit of space rock from the French scene of the 70s – served up with lots of keyboards and electronics from leader Jean Philippe Goude, who uses a variety of different musicians and instruments from track to track! The set's one of those cool French records that offered up a way to compress some of the excesses of prog in the second half of the 70s, but all without losing the best energy either – shorter tracks that still manage to journey to the stars – sometimes with vocals, but which are always secondary to the deft instrumentation of the tunes. The whole thing's a beautiful lost treasure, ever issued in the US – with titles that include "Les Saturnales", "Sicilienne", "Machine", "Coma", "Duo", "Cantiliene", "Dies Irae", and Tintinnabulum". CD includes a bonus track: "Trio De Mini-Moogs". CD

Fantastic work from Syn – a British group who are maybe best-remembered for giving the world future prog giants Chris Squire and Peter Banks – but who are already pretty darn great even without that later legacy of sound! The vibe here is a bit like Tomorrow – the early home of Steve Howe – in that the songs are mostly short, focused, and tuneful, but have all sorts of wonderfully new ideas and trippy touches around the edges – deeper than pop psych material coming out of the US at the time, but equally catchy in its own sort of way!
