RascalsFreedom Suite ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $4.99
A double-length set from The Rascals – possibly their most stretched-out exploration of ideas, at least during their initial run for Atlantic Records! The 2LP set features a fair bit of shorter, catchier tunes on the first record – many with some righteous soul overtones – but on the second record, the group really open up – hitting some longer jamming tunes on side three, and moving into a 15 minute instrumental on side four! Vocals are great from all three singers – Gene Cornish, Eddie Brigati, and Felix Cavaliere – and the rhythms are rock-solid too, often augmented with a bit of Atlantic-styled backings by Arif Mardin, to further enforce the soulfulness of the set. Titles include the hit "People Got To Be Free", plus "American The Beautiful", "Any Dance'll Do", "A Ray Of Hope", "Look Around", "Boom", "Heaven", "Cute", "Baby I'm Blue", and "Adrian's Birthday". LP, Vinyl record album
(In the silver foil cover, including the printed inner sleeves. Cover has a cutout notch and some ring wear.)

Young RascalsGroovin' ... LP
Atlantic, 1967. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Possibly the biggest album ever by The Rascals – a wonderfully tight batch of tunes that has the group hitting perfectly on all their best fronts! Blue eyed soul mixes wonderfully with some rougher garage-styled rock – and the execution here is perfect enough to please listeners on both sides of the fence. Perhaps most noteworthy is the presence of Arif Mardin arrangements on some of the album's key tracks – a factor that really helps the group find their groove, and sparkle even more brilliantly than before. Titles include "Groovin", "If You Knew", "A Girl Like You", "Find Somebody", "I'm So Happy Now", "Sueno", "How Can I Be Sure", and "It's Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue & green label pressing. Cover has some wear and a hype sticker.)

✨✧ RascalsSee/Search & Nearness ... CD
Atlantic/BGO (UK), 1969/1971. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A pair of records that really show the evolution of The Rascals – back to back in a single set! See is harder rocking and almost deeper soul than before for the group – and a tremendous evolution in the music of The Rascals – light years past the pop hits of a few years before! The group co-produced the album with Arif Mardin, and the sounds here are even more sophisticated than their Once Upon A Dream album – in modes that are sometimes rootsy rock, sometimes looser jamming, all woven together with the complexity of some of the hipper groups recording for Columbia Records at the time. The vocals are even more confident than before – as are some of the tunes in the set – and titles include "See", "I'd Like To Take You Home", "Remember Me", "Real Thing", "Away Away", "Carry Me Back", "Nubia", and "Temptation's Bout To Get Me". Search & Nothingness is the Rascals' last album for Atlantic Records – and a set that has the combo relying more than ever on the talents of organist Felix Cavaliere! There's a great New York blend of rock and soul going on in the set – a confident, soaring sort of approach to the tunes that's past caring what any simple genre conventions might mean, or which tracks might end up on radio – even though most of the tunes here are still plenty darn catchy. The piano and organ lines on the album snap along nicely, as do some of the drums (especially on the break cut "You Don't Know") – and although group member Eddie Brigati had left by the time the album was released, he still sings lead on a few tracks. Titles include the jazzy "Nama", which is a wonderful surprise – plus "You Don't Know", "Right On", "Ready For Love", "Fortunes", "Glory Glory", and "The Letter". CD

Neneh CherryRaw Like Sushi (3LP deluxe edition) ... LP
Virgin, 1988. New Copy 3LP (reissue)... $34.99 75.99
Maybe the crowning moment of genus from the great Neneh Cherry – a record that's a huge evolution from her post punk funk of just a few short years before – and one that really helped her bridge the Atlantic and find a huge following over here at the time! There's a great mix of hip hop inspiration and electro soul styles going on here – but also fused with the chunkier modes that were coming out of the UK soul scene right at the end of the 80s – maybe a new love of the depth of classic soul, which is used to really amplify the spirit of the great lyrics that Neneh delivers throughout. Titles include the megahit "Buffalo Stance" – plus "Manchild", "Kisses On The Wind", "Inner City Mama", "Heart", "The Next Generation", "So Here I Come", "Outre Risque Locomotive", and "Love Ghetto". Beautiful 3LP version – packaged in a heavy slipcover – with loads of bonus materials! Titles include "Buffalo Stance (1/2 way 2 house rmx)", "Buffalo Stance (sukka mix)", "Manchild (Smith N Mighty rmx)", "Manchild (Massive Attack mix)", "Manchild (old school mix)","Kisses On The Wind (Dynamic Duo + Latin Rascals mix)", "Next Generation (rap one mix)", "Heart (it's a demo)", "Kisses On The Wind (David Morales a little more Puerto Rico mix)", "Inner City Mamma (cold blooded rmx)", "Buffalo Stance (Kevin Sanderson's techno stance rmx one)", and lots more. Also comes with a very cool 12" square, 48 page full color booklet of notes! LP, Vinyl record album

VariousChartbusters USA – Sunshine Pop Special Edition ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Sunshine Pop from the top of the charts – a great look at some of the best-remembered tunes from this sweet 60s genre! Lots of other Sunshine Pop collections focus on the obscurities of the scene – but honestly, some of the hits really represent the best work of the groups included – the kind of sublime studio magic that few others could match back in the day – catchy pop, but with a darker psych undercurrent – all wrapped up with wonderful vocals and some really groovy instrumentation! There's plenty here you'll recognize – the kind of cuts that always make you sit up and take notice on an oldies radio show, but which you can never remember the artist. Titles include "Younger Girl" by The Critters, "It's Getting Better" by Mama Cass, "I Could Be So Good To You" by Don & The Goodtimers, "She Lets Her Hair Down" by The Tokens, "A Girl Like You" by The Young Rascals, "Darlin" by The Beach Boys, "If You Don't Want My Love" by Robert John, "Morning Girl" by The Neon Philharmonic, "Back On The Street Again" by The Sunshine Company, "Anything Goes" by Harpers Bizarre, "Love" by Mercy, "The Rain The Park & Other Things" by The Cowsills, "The River Is Wide" by The Forum, and "Look At Me Girl" by Bobby Vee & The Strangers. 26 tracks in all – with a great set of notes! VariousSuper Hits Vol 2 ... LP
Atlantic, 1968. Very Good ... $9.99
While this is the sort of collection labels churn out as a loss leader, to spark interest in their artists, this set actually shows off the depth of talent in the Atlantic catalog throughout the 60s. Mostly soul and R&B, but with a few pop numbers too, the twelve song set plays great as sampler of some of the top sounds of the late 60s: Wilson Pickett "Funky Broadway", Aretha Franklin "Baby I Love You", The Rascals "Groovin", Sam & Dave "Soul Man", Te Bar-Kays "Soul Finger", Joe Tex "Skinny Legs And All", Aretha Franklin "Chain Of Fools", Otis Redding "Dock Of The Bay", Sonny & Cher "The Beat Goes On", The Bee Gees "To Love Somebody", Buffalo Springfield "For What It's Worth" and The Fireballs featuring Jimmy Gilmer "Bottle Of Wine". ✨✧ Boz ScaggsMoments ... LP
Columbia, 1970. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
If you think you know Boz Scaggs, think again – because this early Columbia album features a whole different sound! The Scaggs here is a really loose and soulful one – as Boz steps out of the freewheeling late 60s Bay Area scene with a really wonderful take on blue-eyed soul – an approach that's clearly informed by the sound of The Rascals and some of the New York scene, but which also has some tasty California touches that really transform the mood. Boz vocals are pure and straightforward – and the instrumentation on the set has a tight, but laidback sort of feel – no surprise, as Boz' band of the time was really great. There's a real Free Soul sort of feel to the record – and tracks include "Moments", "Downright Women", "Painted Bells", "Alone Alone", "Near You", "We Were Always Sweethearts", "Can I Make It Last", and "We Been Away". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear.)
