✨✧ PeddlersSuite London (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Philips/Glam O Rama (Italy), 1972. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really fantastic final album from The Peddlers – the UK trio who effortlessly mixed jazz and soul in the 60s, but who work here in a more expanded format! All the best elements of the group's sound are still nicely in place – those raspy vocals, strong use of keyboards, and especially their great sense of a groove – one that's made them a favorite for samples for more sophisticated DJs and producers over the years! But here, the sound is maybe even cooler – thanks to work from the London Philharmonic. Group leader/singer/keyboardist Roy Phillips composed the whole thing, and the Peddlers are at the core – but they're also helped out by percussionist John Punter and guitarist Toney Walmsley, and Peter Robinson – who did the larger orchestrations. Titles include "This Strange Affair", "Raining In London", "Sequence Of Thought", "Did She", "Sequence Of Thought", "In Juxtaposition", "Under London Nights", "River Lives", "I Have Seen", "Impressions", and "A Year And A Day Metamorphosis". 2LP set features a rare bonus album – with tracks from singles that include "Nothing Sacred", "Manah", "Sing Me An Old Song", "Have You Ever Been To Georgia", and "Back Alley Jane". Don Cherry/Krzystof PendereckiActions (limited colored vinyl) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Philips/Our Swimmer (Germany), 1971. New Copy ... On August 29, 2020
One of the most successful jazz-meets-modern classical albums we've ever heard – thanks largely to the supreme talents of Don Cherry! Cherry leads the large New Eternal Rhythm Orchestra – which includes Peter Brotzmann, Tomasz Stanko, Manfred Schoof, Kenny Wheeler, Gunter Hampel, Willem Breuker, and Albert Manglesdorf – and Krzystof Penderecki conducts the entire proceedings. Cherry plays mostly solo on his own composition "Humus", and other tracks include "Sita Rama Encores" (also by Cherry), and Penderecki's "Actions For Free Jazz Orchestra". (Note: Record Store Day 2020 has been rescheduled to separate special release days of August 29, September 26 and October 24. The specific release date for each previously announced title is yet to be announced and subject to change. Titles are in limited supply – and will be offered for sale first to customers who visit the Dusty Groove retail outlet in Chicago on August 29, September 26 and October 24 only if it is safe and responsible to open the store, with Covid-19 shelter in place orders no longer in place. Items will not be pre-sold or reserved in any way. However, we will offer up whatever we have left for sale online after 12pm Central on release day.) LP, Vinyl record album

Alice ColtraneWorld Spirituality Classics Vol 1 – The Ecstatic Music Of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda (with bonus download) ... LP
Luaka Bop, Mid 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 28.98
An incredible side of the talents of the legendary Alice Coltrane – obscure 80s material that was recorded in the years after her famous records on Impulse and Warner Brothers – only ever issued on cassette at the time! The tracks have Alice still very much in the same spiritual territory as before – but also mixing in some elements from American gospel music – not in any sort of Christian way, but just in terms of the use of a larger choir on some of the tracks, whose stompingly rhythmic presence can really drive a few of the tunes! Other tracks are more spare, and really focus on Coltrane's vocals and work on organ – as well as a bit of harp and string backings too – all at a level that really pushes the transcendental modes she first brought to light in the 70s. Given that most of us never got our hands on the original tapes, the whole thing is a real treasure trove – and presented with nicely detailed notes, too. Titles include "Er Ra", "Om Shanti", "Om Rama", "Rama Guru", "Haria Naryan", "Krishna Japaye", "Rama Katha", "Keshava Murahara", and "Journey To Satchindananda". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousPsych Funk Sa Re Ga! – Seminar – Aesthetic Expressions Of Psychedelic Funk Music In India 1970 to 1983 ... CD
World Psychedelic Classics, 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $8.99 17.98
A funky psychedelic kaliedoscope of grooves from India – killer numbers from the 70s and into the early 80s – Psych Funk Sa-Re-Ga, from the folks who put together the equally heavy Psych-Funk 101 and Brazilian Guitar Fuzz Bananas compilations! Most of cuts here have a raw, fuzzed out undercurrent of psychedelia – guitars that buzz or lead searingly, depending on the needs of the number – with heavy, funk-based drums and/or hand percussion with rumbling bass rhythms. From that core, they bust out mightily with more furious percussion, rhythms, mad horn arrangements, and vocals that work as either a sweetener or for even more wild-eyed excitement! In short, global psychedelic funk rhythms with regional Indian folk and classical flourishes, blended with mod, soul, garage and soundtrack influences from around the globe. It's a funky, psychedelic fusion of east and west that's billed as a seminar, but this is no academic endeavor – it's a psych funk party all the way! Includes "The Mod Trade" by The Black Beats, "Psychedelia" by X'Lents, "Somebody To Love – Edit" and "Gairaag Dance Music – Edit" by Kalyanji Anandji, "Dance Music From Hare Rama Hare Krishna" by RD Burman, "Lekar Ham Diwana Dil" by RD Burman feat Asha Bhosle & Kishore Kumar, "Mary Long" by Atomic Forest, "Dharmatma Theme Music" by Kalyanji Anandji, "Phir Teri Yaad" by Hemant Bhosle feat Asha Bhosle, "Thanimayil" by Ilaiyaraaja fet Vani Jairam & Chorus and more. 20 tracks in all – with a thick booklet of notes on each track, plus loads of photos, original album & poster art, and more. ✨✧ LaraajiVision Songs ... CD
Numero, 1984. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Music of a very different style than some of Laraaji's other work – more tuneful and song-based – with shorter tracks that show a whole different side of his talents! Laraaji's gotten great acclaim for his homespun spiritual sounds – long tracks that first found a home in Brian Eno's Ambient series, then came out on a variety of self-released records, and have even seen a big new revival in recent years. But the music here is a mixture of echoey vocals and rhythm patterns – songs that almost feel like special prayers of motivation and uplift – a karmic legacy stripped down more for an 80s generation, but still filled with a rich amount of spirit! The man's a surprisingly strong singer, with a trippy quality that really fits his lyrics – and almost gives some of the songs a late 60s sort of LA underground vibe. Titles include "Is This Clear", "Hare Jaya Jaya Rama", "Great Bells", "Laws Of Manifestation", "Cosmic Joe", "We Shall Be Lifted", and "I Can Only Bliss Out". CD

✨✧ MachitoKenya (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Roulette/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1957. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A real corker from Machito – a set that's got a lot more bite and earthy fire than some of his other albums of the 50s – as you might be able to guess from the cover and the title! The record definitely lives up to the Afro-Cuban promise on the front – thanks to very hip arrangements from Mario Bauza and AK Salim – who balance core rhythmic elements with some great modern jazz solo contributions – from key players who include Johnny Griffin on tenor, Cannonball Adderley on alto, Joe Newman on trumpet, and Eddie Bert on trombone – all coming together under Machito's leadership with a sound that's much bolder than most of his work in a straighter Latin mode! The album's a key meeting of styles – as powerful today as it was when first recorded – and tracks include the great "Congo Mulence", a very tight groover – plus "Turuato", "Frenzy", "Cannonology", "Minor Rama", and "Wild Jungle". ✨✧ Alice ColtraneHuntington Ashram Monastery ... LP
Impulse, 1969. Very Good- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Swirling spiritual work from Alice Coltrane – an incredible trio album that features her heavily on harp, plus a bit of piano – in a trio with Ron Carter on bass and Rashied Ali on drums! The sound is wonderful – lush, yet contemplative – in a personal style that really shows Alice beginning to express herself in new modes after the death of The Great One. The us of harp is especially incredible – handled here with a sense of majesty that really leaves us breathless, and which goes far beyond other use of that instrument in jazz. And even Alice's piano is surprisingly nice – with these mellow, earthy undertones that bubble at the bottom and ground the whole effort on earthly territory. Titles include "Turiya", "HIS", "Jaya Jaya Rama", and "Via Sivanadagar". LP, Vinyl record album

Impulse, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Beautifully high concept work from Alice Coltrane – the kind of record you'd use to announce the arrival of a new king – or lord, for that matter! The record features Coltrane at the head of a large group of string players – creating a full, rich sound that serves as the backdrop for the core group of musicians – a trio that features Alice on piano, organ, and harp, plus Charlie Haden on bass and Ben Riley on drums and percussion. The tracks are long, and at times very dark – extremely powerful in their sound, and with a sense of hope, life, and majesty that's extremely inspiring! Titles include "Sri Rama Ohnedaruth", "The Firebird", "Lord of Lords", and "Going Home". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousPraise Poems 6 – A Journey Into Deep Soulful Jazz & Funk From The 1970s (with bonus download) ... LP
Tramp (Germany), 1970s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic sounds from this always-great series – one that's always got an unassuming title, but which always turns us onto a great range of songs we've never heard before! As with previous volumes, the approach here is really unique – not really spiritual jazz, or righteous soul – but often somewhere in between – the kinds of cuts that maybe never fully got noticed at the time because they were so unique! There's a very deep vibe to the whole thing – music that lifts the spirit and heals the mind – but never in a way that's as hokey as that might sound. Instead, the set's full of work by artists who got great inspiration from the more righteous new trends of the late 60s, then really took the music in their own direction with these recordings. Titles include "Going Crazy" by Fusion, "For What It's Worth" by Cesar's Children, "Things I Could Be" by Monopoly, "Cherokee" by Verses, "For All The Good Times" by Rama Dyushambee, "White Bird" by Flood, "Melting The Ice" by Michael Kiser, "Sunshine You'll Love It" by Alan Burton, "Betcha Never Knew" by Federico Cervantes, "Freeom" by Daybreak, and "Feeling The Sunshine" by Waves. Americo Brito & DjaramaNha D'Stine ... LP
Mar & Sol (Netherlands), Early 80s. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
One of the only albums ever recorded by Djarama – a group with roots in Cape Verde, but who rocked the Dutch scene of the mid 80s – where their highly rhythmic style must have been a huge hit! The approach here is a bit like some of the post-colonial acts recording in Paris around the same time – but a lot less polished, with less attempt for commercial crossover appeal – at a level that really has the instrumentation getting a lot of space, especially the drums that really drive some of the best tunes! There's also some cool keyboard moments too – and vocals are by leader Americo Brito – on titles that include "Problema", "Morto E Discanso", "Nha D'Stine", "Boogie Time", "Curti Curpin", and "Da Bo Gandja". Philippe Doray & Les Asociaux AssociesRamasse-Miettes Nucleaires ... LP
Souffle Continu (France), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
Groundbreaking work from the Paris scene of the 70s – a record that's kind of post-prog, post-improvisation, and which maybe sets the scene for sonic experiments on the UK scene in years to come! Philippe Doray is at the helm of his antisocial associates here – a quintet that mixes elements of rock, jazz, and avant classical styles, which are then altered with a sensibility borrowed from more serious worlds of musique concrete and electro-acoustic experimentation – but handled with a spirit that's very down to earth and freewheeling! There's elements here to appeal to fans of all the many styles involved – and forward to ears tuned towards the noisier experiments of Nurse With Wound, The Hafler Trio, and others – a really amazing record, with titles that include "Nucleaire", "Ramasse", "Secoue Le Flipeur", "Miettes", "Fin De Semain Dans Un Parc D'Attraction", and "La Capitale De L'Ennemi". Mario NascimbenePsycorama ... LP
Minstrel/Roundtable (Australia), Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 31.98
Some of the moodiest, most unusual music we've ever heard from Mario Nascimbene – an artist who's maybe best known for working in the more romantic side of the spectrum, but who here is using a "mixerama" keyboard – which works a bit like the mellotron to sample elements, then put them into a specific scale! The tunes are often stark and spare, and build slowly in these waves of sonic energy – almost with a quality that feels more like the industrial underground of Zoviet France or Hafler Trio than anything we might have expected from Nascimbene, especially in the 60s. The album features a selection of songs used in short documentary films directed by Roberto Rossellini – and titles include "Angoscia", "Totalia Viole-Celli", "Attesa Antica", "Situazione Orientale", "Riberbo Di Tam Tam", "Percussione Di Timpani", "Tragedia Greca", and "Lunare". Brazilian singer Elba Ramalho is still going strong – and maybe sounding better than ever, partly due to a matured quality in her vocals – which makes things sometimes sound deeper than in the early years! The style here is a mix of older forro elements with more contemporary touches – accordion a bit in the background on more numbers, surrounded by electric elements that emphasize some of the more soulful currents in the music – while the lady herself stands strongly in the spotlight. The set features guest appearances by Ney Matogrosso and Roberta Sa – and titles include "Girassol", "Calcanhar", "Na Areia", "Princesa Domeu Lugar", "Oxente", "Setudo Pode Acontecer", and "O Mundo". Delabel (France), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $9.99
Grooviness abounds! This set's a wonderful batch of obscure French pop tunes – the kind of upbeat, hard-swinging 60s numbers that are a far cry from the moodier, more sentimental modes of the years before – with complicated elements laid alongside some straightforward grooves – all with production and execution that's completely sublime! If you dig the music of Serge Gainsbourg, and have always wanted to go further, this set's a great place to start – as it's got an excellent blend of slightly funky styles that feature lots of work on fuzzed-out guitars, organ, and heavy bass – the sorts of ultra-hip sounds you might always dig for on French records, yet never find together in one place as great as this! Titles include "Cuisses Nues, Bottes De Cuir" by Philippe Nicaud, "Bernadette" by L'Oeil, "A Degager" by Les Fleurs De Pavot, "Rouge Rouge" by Christie Laume, "Les Filles C'Est Fait" by Charlotte Leslie, "Le Pape Du Pop" by Stephane Varegues, "Avec Les Oreilles" by Monique Thubert, and "Sexologie" by Danyel Gerard. Hey, they're not kidding with this title – as Tito really goes to town with a set of mambo tunes, grooving it up with a hard heavy percussive edge! The title's one of the first on the Tico label (as an LP), and it really sets the pace for some of the label's excellent work to come – as Tito and crew play with a tightness and energy that's missing from a lot of their earlier work. Amazing grooves like you've never heard before – the seminal sides by Salah Ragab and his Cairo Jazz Band! As you can probably guess from their name, the ensemble was an Egyptian one – working at the end of the 60s in an incredible blend of jazz and more traditional Egyptian-styled sounds – a blend that comes across with all the exotic feel of the pyramids at dawn, but which manages to groove like some of the best funky work from America at the time! Instrumentation includes lot of percussion, heavy piano and horns, and some especially great flute on most tracks – all coming together with a sound that's unlike anything else we've heard before. This collection is the first time that this music has been brought together officially, all with the kind of top-shelf production and packaging we've come to expect from the Art Yard label! The CD version includes 4 more tracks than the vinyl version – with the titles "Egypt Strut", "Ramadan In Space Time", "Dawn", "Neveen", "Oriental Mood", "Kleopatra", and "Mervat" – plus "The Crossing (Oubour)", "Calling You", "A Farewell Theme" and "Kleopatra (alternate take)". El (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Don't take the "keep it light" title too seriously – as the work here is pretty darn heavy overall – a massive look at the way the British jazz scene was rapidly changing with the approach of the 60s – and finally starting to get a voice of its own! The big package takes a look at the best smaller groups and standout soloists of the time – many of whom have clearly been inspired by American modern jazz, from California cool to New York hardbop – but who are also bringing plenty of their own inventive phrasing and arrangements to bear as well – so much so that the London scene was exploding with new surprises at every twist and turn! This 3CD box set features a total of 62 tracks in all – plus a nice booklet of notes – with wonderful work from artists who include Joe Harriott, Dudley Moore, Victor Feldman, Tubby Hayes, Ronnie Scott, Annie Ross, Don Rendell, British Jazz Trio, London Jazz Quartet, Dizzy Reece, Cleo Laine, Tony Crombie, Ronnie Ross, and others. ✨✧ Islam Chipsy & EekKahraman ... LP
100 Copies (Egypt), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really cool concept for a record – one that's unlike anything else we've ever heard, both in its sound and instrumental presentation! The group features two drummers behind the keyboard lines of Islam Chipsy – drums playing together at a pace that's very quick and almost skittish, but held together tightly with a very rhythmic vibe – so that the grooves pulse out fast and intensely, while Chipsy serves up these keyboard lines that move at a slower pace, and which often have slight currents that reflect the Egyptian location of the recording! The whole thing almost feels as if the aliens who built the pyramids came back in the 21st Century – and decided to win back the Cairo scene with their new keyboard and drum-driven grooves. Titles include "El Zantor", "Fast Track", "Zardana", "Saba Zamzam", and "El Daynasour". LP, Vinyl record album

Luis BacalovSi Puo Fare Amigo (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Digitmovies (Italy), 1972. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99
A fantastic Luis Bacalov score for one of the classic films to feature the duo of Bud Spencer and Terence Hill – music that matches the wicked blend of drama and humor that always made their movies so great! The set begins with a great English-language theme – the very catchy "Can Be Done", sung by Rocky Roberts with this raspy vocal that's completely charming – then the music moves into instrumental territory that's awash in the mix of tension and warmth that really could suit a narrative like this so well – with a bit of harmonica from Franco De Gemini, amidst this sweet flow of woodwinds and electric instrumentation, all balanced with a beautiful sense of color and tone. In addition to "Can Be Done", other titles include "Si Puo Fare Amigo", "Guai In Vista", "Amore Nel West", "Buffo Inseguimento", "Festa Al Villaggio", "Valzer Al Saloon", "Il Villaggio All'Alba", and "Pianino Pianino". John BarryPetulia ... LP
Warner, 1968. Near Mint- ... $2.99
A pretty compelling John Barry score – written for this strange semi-comedy which starred George C Scott and Julie Christie, and which was directed by Richard Lester. The music is a mixture of groovy themes and slower numbers that still have a modulated groovy approach – strings gliding with a gentle submerged groove, in a warm easy fashion, but not as dramatic as more conventional soundtracks. There's plenty of great moments on the set – and the soundtrack's a good example of the way that Barry increasingly began to explore space within his compositions as the 60s went on. Titles include "Eat Topless", "Comprehendo", "Petulia", "Motel", "Highway 101", and "Friends Of The Evergreen". LP, Vinyl record album

Mark BegoAretha Franklin – The Queen Of Soul ... Book
Skyhorse, 2018. New Copy ... $3.99 18.99
A nicely expanded version of this important look at the career and music of Aretha Franklin – one that was first published at the end of the 80s, but which has been refined over the years to follow her changing career – and updated in this final edition, which covers the last decade of Aretha's time on this planet! Mark Bego doesn't pull any punches in his examination of Franklin – and while he clearly loves Aretha's music, he also gets at all the challenges she faced over the years – including some of the behind the scenes drama that impacted her music. The book is 430 pages, softcover, with a full color photo section in the middle, and a discography at the end. Book

Elmer BernsteinCaretakers ... LP
AVA, Mid 60s. Sealed ... $9.99
A great Elmer Bernstein score for this creepy psycho drama! At the best times, the score has the jazzy overtones of Walk On The Wild Side or Man With The Golden Arm – serious and soundtracky to be sure, but with some great work in a drama jazz style that was always Bernstein's best calling card in the picture business. And despite the darkness of the plot, there's actually some nice groovy numbers that have a real 60s go go feel to them – with plenty of swinging horns, and some driving and lively rhythms! Titles include "Birdito", "Party In The Ward", "The Cage", "Seclusion", "Electrotherapy" and "Black Straight-Jacket". LP, Vinyl record album

Elmer BernsteinWalk On The Wild Side ... LP
Choreo/AVA, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $4.99
One of Elmer Bernstein's best soundtracks of the 60s – written for this film set in the brothels of New Orleans in the 30s, with a mix of jazz and dramatic themes. The best cuts are the jazz-based ones – tunes that come across with more of a 60s groove than you'd expect, given the setting of the film, and which are played by a small combo. Other tracks are more serious – and titles include "Juke For Teresina", "Exit Kitty", "Hallie's Jazz", "Iron Rings", "Doll House", and "Walk On The Wild Side". LP, Vinyl record album

Elmer Bernstein/Shorty Rogers & His GiantsMan With The Golden Arm – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Decca, 1955. Very Good ... $5.99
One of the greatest jazz soundtracks of all time! Elmer Bernstein wrote the score to Otto Preminger's chilling film version of Nelson Algren's book The Man With The Golden Arm – a sad tale of jazz, gambling, and heroin addiction on the streets of Chicago (not far from Dusty Groove, in fact!) – and in doing so, he came up with one of the first jazz soundtracks to really work strongly with a dramatic narrative. The film's striking theme is played in a number of variations, either with orchestral backing, or in small combo format by Shorty Rogers & His Giants, a crack west coast group that features work by Bud Shank, Shelly Manne, Bob Cooper, and Pete Candoli. The tracks work perfectly together as a suite of tracks, even without the images of the film – telling a tale of temptation, sadness, tragedy, and rebirth. Titles include "Clark Street", "Breakup", "The Fix", "Zosh", "Frankie Machine", and "Audition". Worth the price for the Saul Bass cover alone! LP, Vinyl record album

Ruben BladesMaestra Vida Vol 1 – Primera Parte ... CD
Fania, 1979. Used ... $14.99
An amazing achievement for Ruben Blades – a full suite of tracks conceived and composed by Ruben as a "disco drama" on wax! The work isn't the disco-styled album you might think from this description – and is more of a mini-opera or concept album by Blades, one that features ambitious arrangements from Louie Cruz, Marty Sheller, and Carlos Franzetti – using strings and more standard Latin backings to expand the tunes tremendously, and make the whole album work with the full drama it requires. There's a few spoken bits on the set, which give way to some great songs – and the album also has a few instrumental passages. Willie Colon produced and supervised the whole effort – and tracks on the first part include "Prologo", "Manuela", "Carmelo (part 1)", "Dejenme Reir", and "El Nascimento De Ramiro". CD

Claude BollingBorsalino/Borsalino & Co (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Music Box (France), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $26.99
Some of the most famous 70s soundtrack work of French jazz musician Claude Bolling – served up here in a double-length CD that's overflowing with bonus material too! First up is the original score for Borsalino – a really lovely little soundtrack for the French film that starred Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo as gangsters in the roaring 20s – set to backings by pianist Claude Bolling that's balanced nicely between the styles of his trad jazz work on record, and some of the warmer thematic modes of the French soundtrack theme at the time! Bolling's piano is always very heavy in the mix – sometimes played with the rhythmic quality of a boogie woogie musician, sometimes more spaciously soundtracked – and augmented by just the right touches of strings. The record was a big Euro hit in the 70s, and still holds up well – and this version features 36 tracks from the film – far more than the original album! Borsalino & Co is the sequel – and features a score that takes off nicely from the first – still echoes of Bolling's piano on many tracks, but also fuller, more dramatic orchestrations at times – and maybe a wider range of jazz instrumentation too. CD features 15 tracks from Borsalino & Co – plus 6 more bonus tracks that include vocal songs by Michele Bach and Le Gang, a big band version of the theme, and a "Borsalino Medley" too. CD

David BowieLodger (with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/Ryko, 1979. Used ... $9.99
The brilliant consummation of Bowie's late 70s years in Berlin – a record that showed he could take the experiments in sound he was crafting with Brian Eno, and turn them back into the kind of creepily catchy rock tunes that first made him a legend! Eno's help on the record is still quite strong – heard very well in the record's use of odd electronics and exotic themes – of a sort that Eno would later explore on his own with David Byrne. But the real charm here is pure Bowie – with an unabashed flair for a dramatic lyric, a well-chosen use of a heavier guitar, and a sense of personality and poise that makes the record one of his most unified ever! Titles include "Red Sails", "Look Back In Anger", "Repetition", "Boys Keep Swinging", "Red Money", "Yassassin", and "DJ". A classic 70s film score from Roy Budd – a great illustration of the way he could turn his jazz-based talents into some more dramatic material when he wanted! The main "Fear Is The Key" theme is a Budd classic – funky, but filled with swirling orchestrations too – a warm blend of strings with jazz instrumentation from Ronnie Scott and Tubby Hayes on tenor! Other numbers follow nicely – adding in bits of drama here and there, but then relaxing into a warmer Budd groove – supported by great orchestrations throughout. In addition to "Fear Is The Key", highlights include the jazzy "Bayou Blues" and "Louisiana Ferry", plus "Breakout", "The Swamp", "The Car Chase", and "The Hostage Escapes". CD

Blue Note (Japan), 1956. Used ... $11.99
Arguably one of the greatest Kenny Burrell albums ever! Unlike some of Kenny's other sessions, which hide his guitar in arrangements that are a bit too complicated – this one's a nicely stripped-down album that sets his hollow electric in a group with Tommy Flanagan on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, Kenny Clarke on drums, and Candido on conga. The tracks are nicely laidback, and Kenny hits some nice deep grooves on cuts like "Fugue N Blues", "Takeela", and "Delilah". Plus, the album also includes a totally cool percussion-only track – "Rhythmorama", which is a duet between Kenny Clarke and Candido! CD

A great little soundtrack from trash maestro Nicholas Carras – not one of the bigger names in mainstream cinema scoring at the start of the 60s – but in a way that really lets him take off and get creative with a record like this! The album's got a leadoff rock tune, some jazzier charts – ala Elmer Bernstein – and a mix of dramatic orchestrations with moodier, mellower passages – almost currents of exotica at times, all put together to create more than enough drama away from the images on the screen! Modern Harmonic, 1958. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
A schlocky film, but one with a great soundtrack – thanks to the low budget genius of composer Nicholas Carras! The music is surprisingly filled with rich elements – light strings at some points, rumbling percussion, vibes, and what seems to be some electronics – but which is really just an electric violin, run through a set of effects! The result is great, and the music has far more drama than you might expect away from the screen – maybe even more so, as it stands here as a top-rate sonic adventure, whereas the film might not make such a claim! ✨✧ Don CherryMu Second Part ... LP
BYG/Actuel, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
Don Cherry really breaks out here on his classic Mu sessions from France – using the new freedoms of post-68 Paris to explore themes at a level that would set the tone for generations to come! The album's very spare, and very improvised – with Cherry on pocket trumpet, piano, and wooden flute – plus a bit of percussion too – alongside drummer Ed Blackwell, who's equally unbridled – showing a huge evolution since the time both he and Don spent in the group of Ornette Coleman! There's a few echoes of the global elements that Cherry would later embrace more strongly in the 70s – but the core energy here is mostly improvised jazz, handled at a level that really makes a lot better use of the freedom than some of Don's contemporaries. Titles on this second part include "Bamboo Night", "The Mysticism Of My Sound", "Psycho Drama", "Smiling Faces Going Places", "Teo Teo Can", and "Dollar Brand/Spontaneous Composing/Exert Man On The Moon". Easily the hippest of the Clarke-Boland Big Band Records from the classic years – a set of hard grooving tracks that really pushes the envelope of their style! There's a few elements here that are different than usual – such as the presence of electric piano on a few tracks, which creates a very new sound for the group, the presence of some exotic jazz influences (perhaps borrowed from the MPS Jazz Meets The World series), and the use of some edgier compositions on the set, including work by late 60s European free-thinkers, like Eddie Louiss, Albert Mangelsdorff, and John Surman. The reed work is really incredible in this setting – and is handled by Sahib Shihab, Ronnie Scott, Billy Mitchell, and Derek Humble – all of whom seem to blow with inspiration from Surman – using tones that are far more out there than usual. Our favorite-ever album by Alice Coltrane – a masterpiece of spirit and soul, recorded in a wonderfully open-handed style! The album's mostly a spare batch of tracks cut by Alice and her trio with Ron Carter and Ben Riley – but also features some guest work on sax by Joe Henderson and Pharoah Sanders on a few tracks. Pharoah and Joe blow with beautiful post-Coltrane spirituality on the tracks "Ptah The El Daoud" and "Mantra" – but equally great is the beautiful spare piano cut "Turiya & Ramakrishna" – an incredible tune that has Alice playing with a soulfulness you'd hardly expect! Jess Conrad looks a bit more straight-laced than the usual British rocker of the 60s – and he sounds a bit more here, too – in a set of completely charming tracks that had their birth at the moment when the UK labels weren't above bringing a huge production force to bear on the talents of a singer! Conrad was often as much a screen actor as he was a singer – and in a way, he's maybe a bit like a British version of Tommy Sands – charming at the start, and able to bring a subtle sense of drama to his vocals – one that's never too overdone, but which paces things nicely here – and which creates some surprisingly nice moments in the music, maybe more than you'd expect from his clean teen look. This set features a huge 63 tracks in all – singles issued well into the 70s, along with some unissued tracks too – titles that include "There's Gonne Be A Day", "See The Tinker Ride", "Pussy Cat", "Tempted", "A Little Bit Of Loveliness", "My Idea", "A Conspiracy Of Cards", "Twist My Wrist", "Pretty Jenny", "Unless You Mean It", "Mystery Girl", "Out Of Luck", "There's Gonna Be A Day", "Every Breath I Take", "You Too", "Swimming In Tears", "Lock Up Your Daughters", and "Down Town Tonight". The bulk of the album features short "Children's Songs", numbered 1 to 20 – played by Chick in spare, swirling ways that are mighty nice – a much more sensitive Chick Corea than we remember, dancing a nice balance between lyricism and sentimentality, yet without any of the too-popular trappings of some of his 80s contemporaries in the solo piano mode. Cometa (Italy), 1977/1978. New Copy ... $18.99
A pair of thrilling 70s action scores – back to back on a single CD! First up is La Montagna Del Dio Cannibale – a cannibal narrative scored with a great sense of drama by the De Angelis brothers – almost the same energy as their cop/crime work, but without the funk – just full, rich sounds that really build over time, and create this strong feeling of suspense! There's a few exotic elements in the music, given the setting – and these make for some slight hint of a groove – and titles include "Visioni Distorte", "Marcia Allucinante", "La Montagana E Il Mistero", "Ipnosi Tragica", and "Il Dio Cannibale". Messalina Messalina has an older Roman setting, and a relatively sexy narrative – and the music is scored with a mix of percussion, light flute, and some slinky electric basslines – of that great sort that was often used to convey sex in 70s Euro cinema! Some of the melodies are playful, others more erotic – and titles include "Notti Romane", "Danzatrici", "Incontro D'Amore", "Un Piacevole Addio", "Messalina", and "Ballata Burlona". CD

The album's one of the best we've ever heard from Francesco De Masi, and it nicely mixes his usual strong talents for action with a bit more warmth that befits the sexier side of the Italian cinematic spectrum. Sweet strings glide in alongside tighter electric basslines on some tracks – and others feature evocative woodwind bits, haunting piano, and a few more dramatic orchestrations – all wrapped up with really lovely sound throughout, and reissued here in a wonderful new package that really fits the music! There's a few vocal tracks – "Tomorrow Is A Foreign Land" and "Time On My Hands" – sung in English by Melody – and other titles include "The Story Of A Dream", "Running Against The Time", "Cape Town Harbour", "Soldiers Aboard", "Red Clouds", "Ending A Dream", "Suspect & Love", and "You'll Kill Her". ✨✧ DellsFace To Face ... LP
ABC, 1979. Sealed ... Just Sold Out!
A later effort from the Dells, cut around the time ABC was having some great luck with the Detroit soul of The Dramatics – and also recorded in Detroit, with production work by the likes of Al Perkins, Rudy Robinson, and Calvin Carter, the Dells' old boss at Vee Jay. The tunes have a smoother approach than the group's work at Chess/Cadet – but their vocals are still top notch, with that raspy soul quality that has made them sound consistently strong over the years, no matter what the setting. Includes "Face To Face", "Thought I Could", "Face To Face", "Hooked On Loving You", "Love Me", "Wrapped Up Tight", and "Changed Man". Lots of nice ballads! LP, Vinyl record album
(Shrinkwrap is torn a bit along the opening and bottom seam. Cover has a cut corner.)

Eric DemarsanL'Armee Des Ombres ... LP
Universal (France), 1969. New Copy ... About July 5, 2020
An excellent reissue of Eric Demarsan's score for this dramatic film directed by Jean-Pierre Melville – an eerie mix of jazz themes and darker passages that recall work from the same period by Ennio Morricone. The score is presented in a beautiful package – with images from the films and writing in English and French – and titles include "La Mort De L'Instituteur", "Theme De Gerbier", "20 Octobre 1942", "La Lettre Anonomye", "Generique Debut", and "La Planque". Depeche ModeBroken Frame ... LP
Sire/Mute, 1982. Near Mint- ... $29.99
Early Depeche Mode! A Broken Frame is the group's second album, and its finds the group getting their footing exceptionally well after losing Vince Clarke. To our ears, Depeche Mode (or perhaps you can give pretty big share of the acclaim to Martin Gore, as he's credited with all the songwriting) were taking some creative chances on this one, as it was before they had a fairly defined, ultra-dramatic tone to follow. A bit underappreciated in their canon, and well worth reevaluating. Titles include "Leave In Silence", "My Secret Garden", "Monument", "See You", "The Meaning Of Love", "The Sun & The Rainfall" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(UK pressing. Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has unglued seams.)

DeVol/Mack DavidKrakatoa – East Of Java ... LP
ABC, Mid 60s. Sealed ... $4.99
A pretty sweet mid 60s disaster movie – filmed in Cinerama, and featuring an all-star cast that includes a great later Sal Mineo role! The music is lush and slightly sentimental – almost in a Rogers & Hammerstein mode, with South Pacific-y touches on the album's few vocal numbers. Barbara Werle sings the tunes "A Nice Old Fashioned Girl" and "Just Before Sunrise" – but the best number is the wonderful "East Of Java" title theme, sung by a male harmony group who's unfortunately unnamed on the cover! Other instrumental tunes are lush and mainstream soundtrack-ish – and titles are mostly variations on the 3 above-named songs. LP, Vinyl record album

DJ PatifeNa Estrada ... CD
Trama (Brazil), 2006. Used ... $9.99
An incredible record by DJ Patife – far more subtle and soulful than any of his previous efforts, and way much more than just his initial Brazilian take on drum n bass! The sound here easily matches the spirit of the best soulful work on Trama – and the album's done with the depth and integrity of recent gems from Patricia Marx or Bruno E – pretty heady company, but Patife is more than ready for the comparison! Frequent partner Mad Zoo is also along for the album as well, but is a bit more in the background than before – giving space to the subtler instrumentalists who make some of the best tunes to great – letting keyboards, guitar bits, and other jazzy touches really deepen the feel of the record. Vocals are by Cleveland Watkiss, Laura Finnochiaro, Wilson Simoninha, Janaiana Holland, and Camila Andrade – and titles include a great cover of Stevie Wonder's "Overjoyed", plus "Enigma", "Diariamente", "The Midnighter (live bar mix)", "Lovin U", "The Secret", "Link", "Made In Bahia", and "Que Pena". George DuningMe & The Colonel ... LP
RCA (Spain), 1958. Very Good+ ... $6.99
A relatively dramatic score by George Duning – composer of a number of fine Hollywood soundtracks from the 50s, like Pal Joey, Picnic, and From Here To Eternity. The film's a slightly whimsical one with Danny Kaye in the lead, but Duning's approach is more somber, and more focused on emotive passages. Titles include "Amorous Colonel", "Best Of Enemies", "Colonel Kurt", "Jacobowsky", and "Like A Princess". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ EnchantmentIf You're Ready – The Best Of Enchantment ... CD
United Artists/EMI, Late 70s. Used ... $4.99
A great collection of the first wave of work from late 70s Detroit harmony group Enchantment – the best of their recordings for United Artists, and a set that's put together with a real focus on the group's mellower tracks! Like The Dramatics at the time, Enchantment had a newly sophisticated approach to vocal group harmonies – able to work with smoother, tighter arrangements, but not in a way that took away the focus on the sublime vocal work that made the group so great in the first place. The tracks here are a wonderful blend of the personal and professional – and even when a bit of a groove sneaks into a few of the tunes, there's still a warmly crackling vocal approach that's just as great as indie soul work from a few years back. Titles include "Gloria", "Silly Love Song", "Trying To Get Over", "Where Do We Go From Here/Journey", "Thank You Girl For Loving Me", "If You're Ready Here It Comes", "It's You That I Need", "Sunshine", "Dance To The Music", and "Come On & Ride". A straight dramatic score for this 60s western that starred Sean Connery and Brigitte Bardot. The style is dramatic and sweeping, and the only slightly groovy number is the vocal theme "Shalako". ✨✧ FlaviolaFlaviola E O Bando Do Sol ... CD
Solar/World Psychedelia, 1974. Used ... $4.99
A gem of a record from the same Pernambuco early 70s scene that gave us Lula Cortes, Ze Ramalho, Geraldo Azevedo, and Alceu Valenca! This obscure little set has lots of the earthier tones that showed up in work by the above artists – a style that mixes folksy touches with bits of psychedelia – kind of a north east answer to the growing sound from the Minas Geraes generation around Milton Nascimento. Many of the tunes here are fairly mellow – building slowly with an honest, earthy integrity – and mostly relying on acoustic instrumentation to carry the gentle poetry of the lyrics, but still coming across with enough of an edge to appeal to fans of stronger South American rock. Titles include "Canto Funebre", "O Tempo", "Noite", "Desespero", "Cancao De Outono", "Do Amigo", and "Romance Da Lua Lua". CD

Hugo FriedhoferBarbarian & The Geisha (Gemini) ... LP
Gemini, 1955. Sealed ... $14.99
A drama that features John Wayne in Japan – and Friedhofer's soundtrack has that "epic" feel that he did so well at the time – serious orchestral sounds with a great depth of feeling – often through compressed horn passages over strings, with occasional touches of the exotic to signify the locale of the story! Titles include "The Palace", "The Road To Edo", "Awareness", "The Strange House", "Flag Raising", "Orders From Edo", and "Declaration". LP, Vinyl record album

Jerry GoldsmithJustine ... LP
Monument, 1966. Sealed ... $9.99
A dreamy Jerry Goldsmith score for this late George Cukor film that starred Amouk Aimee, Dirk Bogarde, and Robert Forster. The film's got an exotic setting, and the best tunes really make use of this by adding in some action-based Egyptian-sounding numbers. Overall, the soundtrack's mostly mellow and dramatic, but the best numbers have a sound that's almost in a 60s spy spoof mode. Titles include "Alexandria", "Carnival Happening", "Ambush", "Samba Chica", "The Beach", and "The Farm". LP, Vinyl record album

Jerry GoldsmithQB VII ... LP
ABC, 1974. Near Mint- ... $1.99
A richly dramatic score by Jerry Goldsmith – originally penned for an early TV mini-series in the 70s, but re-recorded here in a bold new version! The music has a bit more grandeur at times than some of Goldsmith's other soundtracks – still a hint of the action themes that we love in his best records, but also some more stately elements that correspond with the legal drama behind the story. Gogi GrantWelcome To My Heart ... LP
RCA, 1957. Near Mint- ... $6.99
Gogi Grant sang a fair bit of dramatic pop material in the 50s, but she's nicely laidback and mellow here – working with lush backings from Dennis Farnon, in a moody set of love songs and ballads! The music is filled with plenty of dark corners and indigo hues – and Gogi's vocals have traded some of their previous drama for a sad-tinged approach that really fits Farnons arrangements nicely. Titles include "At Last At Last", "Love Letters", "With All My Heart", "But Beautiful", "So Do I", "They Didn't Believe Me", and "Welcome To My Heart". LP, Vinyl record album

Barry GraySpace 1999 ... LP
RCA, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $14.99
One of Barry Gray's greatest moments – the ultra groovy soundtrack for Space 1999, the short-lived but well-remembered mainstream sci-fi show from the 70s! The title theme has a nice bit of a dancefloor bounce to it – pre-guessing the disco-copy mode that other space soundtracks were facing in the 70s by turning out its own original hit – and other tunes in the set follow a sometimes similar mode that makes the record far funkier than you'd guess for a soundtrack of this type! Some tracks are certainly more straightforward and dramatic, but there's plenty here in that funky Brit Easy mode of the mid 70s – lots of compressed instrumentation and some slight electronic touches – and often rhythms that are a lot harder than you'd expect! Highlights include "Breakaway", "Death's Other Dominion", "Black Sun", and a reprise of the theme. LP, Vinyl record album

Manos HadjidakisBlue ... LP
Dot, Late 60s. Sealed ... $9.99
Although Manos Hadjidakis' soundtrack work of the 60s is mostly in the Greek-sounding mode, this one features him hitting a bit of a western soundtrack feel – to back a drama starring Terence Stamp, Ricardo Montalban, and Karl Malden. About half the tracks are instrumentals with an orchestral feel, and the others are similar, but have slight "westerny" touches – although not as much so as work for Italian films of the same time. Laurindo Almeida plays a bit of acoustic guitar on the album – and titles include "Blue's Solitude", "The Mexicans Are Coming", "Death Of Blue", "Nocturne", "Scherzo", and "Morning After Love". ✨✧ John Handy/Ali Akbar KhanRainbow ... LP
MPS (Germany), 1980. Near Mint- ... $11.99
The second, and lesser-known collaboration between reedman John Handy and sarod player Ali Akbar Khan – and a record that's almost more freewheeling and open-ended than the first! The session's relatively spare – mostly just alto sax, sarod, and violin from L Subramaniam – plus additional tabla and tanpura to set up a hypnotically rhythmic groove. Tunes build slowly, and beautifully – and Handy's saxophone is light years away from his crossover recordings for ABC a few years before – filled with the depth of soul we'd come to love in his classic sides of the 60s. Titles include "Kali Dance", "Garland Of Flowers", "Rajashik", "Indian Boogie Shoes", and "Rainbow Serenade". LP, Vinyl record album
