Butcher BrownSolar Music ... CD
Concord, 2023. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Butcher Brown move past their roots as a core funk combo here – opening the door to contributions from a whole host of guests, and moving even more strongly into the world of soul music than on their album with Triple Trey! There's an expansive sound here that seems to have the hardworking outfit finally getting their chance at more mainstream fame – not in a commercial way, but at a level that just opens up with the energies they've always had, given focus through contributions from Braxton Cook, Keyon Harrold, Jay Prince, Vanisha Gold, Julia Shuren, Nappy Nina, Pink Siifu, and others – on titles that include "This Side Of Sunshine", "Happy Hourrr", "Around For Awhile", "Pink Fur", "Run It Up", "Espionage", "I can Say To You", "Move (Ride)", "Turismo"- "Eye Never Knew", "Half Of It", "No Way Around It", and "DYKWYD". A killer collection of work from this legendary group – one who blended jungle percussion with very cool electronics – all in a funky 70s mode! The set includes three tracks from the verrrrry hard to find fourth album – "Jungle Juice", "Man from Takoradi", and "Manhunter" – as well as cuts from all three of the other albums. Bengt Frippe NordstromBengt Frippe Nordstrom (5LP set) ... LP
Ni Vu Ni Connu (Luxembourg), Late 60s. New Copy 5LP Set ... Just Sold Out!
A stunning tribute to the work of Swedish reedman Bengt Frippe Nordstrom – a player whose solo and small group improvisations arguably set the tone for countless Scandinavian recordings in years to come – presented here with both unreleased material and his legendary Natural Music record for his own Bird Notes label! The package was put together by improvising reed genius Mats Gustaffson – a player who has a strong influence from Nordstrom – and the set features four 12" albums, one 10" disc, and an EP too – all with digital downloads of the music, in a very limited box set with a bonus set of notes and a discography too! Given how rare any of the Bird Notes material is – and even was, back in the day – the package is something of a steal, even with a high price tag – and the work is augmented here by some exclusive tribute tracks for the set as well. Titles include "Bird Notes & Fok Tunes" and "Reality" by Nordstrom – plus "When Will The Blues Leave", which has Frippe with the Ornette Coleman Quintet – plus the tracks "Flickorna I Smaland" by Sven Ake Johhansson, "Shrot 1" by Dror Feiler, "Cellar Fright 3" by Jorgen Adolfsson, "Vacker Men Kort Alltsa" by Isak Hedtjarn, and "Rrrhhmmmmrrrrrrrhhhmmmmm" by Mats Gustafsson. Patrick WilliamsTheme ... LP
PA USA, 1977. Near Mint- ... $4.99
A groovy album of slick LA jazz – put together by the great Pat Williams, who did some great arranging work for Verve and MPS in earlier years! The record features a lot of studio jazz players – like Dave Grusin, Toots Thielemans, Gerrry Niewood, Marvin Stamm, and Jerome Richardson – and the tracks are short with kind of an uptempo funky style. Titles include "Barrio", "Blue Light", "Sail On", and versions of the "Bob Newhart" and "Lou Grant" TV Themes! LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 80s US pressing. Cover is bent a bit at the top left corner.)

✨✧ VariousGuerilla Girls – She-Punks & Beyond 1975 to 2016 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 70s/1980s/1990s/2000s/2010s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Not girl pop, not chart hits, and instead a whole host of hard-burning tracks from the underground – a well-done collection that showcases a huge range of positive, powerful female musical expressions from the mid 70s onward! The set begins during the heyday of the early punk years, and focuses on a few key acts who were offering a great antidote to some of the more testosterone-fueled work of the time – then picks up some especially great pos-punk tracks, before making a brief stop in the early 90s, and ending up with a few key grrrl power cuts from the current century! As always with Ace records, the presentation is as great as the music – very detailed notes that tell as much of a store as the songs themselves – in support of a set list that includes "Survive" by The Bags, "Iama Poseur" by X-Ray Spex, "Kray Twins" by Mo-Dettes, "Popcorn Boy" by Essential Logic, "It's About Time" by The Pandoras, "Shakedown" by Au Pairs, "Das Ah Riot" by Bush Tetras, "Earthbeat" by The Slits, "Come On Now" by The Pussywillows, "Rules & Regulations" by We've Got A Fuzzbox, "What's Wrong With You" by Bratmobile, "Rebel Girl" by Bikini Kill, "I Gave My Punk Jacket To Rickie" by Mary Monday & The Bitches, "You're A Million" by The Raincoats, and "Expert" by Pragvec. ✨✧ Aleuda featuring Hermeto PascoalOferenda ... CD
Carmo/Far Out (UK), Mid 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful album – one that takes us back to the early 70s sound of Hermeto, Airto, and Flora Purim! Hermeto Pascoal arrranged and produced the record, and it's based around the jazzy vocals of Brazilian singer Aleuda, who reminds us a bit of Flora in her early days, but with a tone that's a bit higher and sharper. The backing is performed by a crack group of Brazilian jazz and fusion players that includes Mauro Senise, Zeca Assumpcao, Robertinho Silva, and Hermeto himself – and the album feels like a rare lost session that might have been cut for Milestone during the heyday of the West Coast Latin scene of the mid 70s. Titles include "Ceara", "Oferenda", "Galope", "Jurema", "Passarinho", "Rede", and "Fofoca". CD

✨✧ Jimmy Giuffre1961 (Fusion/Thesis) ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1961. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
2 amazing albums from the 2nd version of the Jimmy Giuffre 3! After working with his first combo of Bob Brookmeyer and Jim Hall during the late 50s, Giuffre hooked up with a pair of younger modernists – Paul Bley and Steve Swallow – reintroducing the piano and bass to his trio format, instruments that had been previously missing because Giuffre wanted to explore the possibilities of melodic composition freed from rhythmic constraints. With this trio, Giuffre was still working in that mode – as you'll hear on Bley and Swallow's incredibly free playing. The group's performances are not free jazz by any means, but they're a key link in that tradition – as Giuffre and crew do an excellent job of creating unconventional compositions, most of which feel like little sculptures in sound. There's a total of 20 tracks on 2CDs – and titles include "Cry, Want", "Trudgin", "Jesus Maria", "Ictus", "Sonic", "Whirrrrr", "The Gamut", "Herb & Ictus", and "Flight". Both records originally available on Verve, now repackaged by ECM. CD

✨✧ FoxyParty Boys ... CD
Dash/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Ish and the Foxy crew still going strong at the end of the 80s – although here, they seem to have dropped some of their Miami disco approach and are going for a sound that's got more of a New York new wave influence overall! There's almost some Ze Records touches on a few numbers – including some harder guitars and percussion – and a number of tunes move towards more of a quirky style than a soulful one. Titles include "Girls", "I Can't Stand The Heat", "Let's Be Bad", "Tonight", "Sambambe Rio", "I Belong To You", "She's So Cool", and "Rrrrock". CD
