✨✧ Deep PurpleDeep Purple ... LP
Tetragrammaton, 1969. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The mighty '69 self-titled set from Deep Purple – not as metallic or hard rock radio ready as their subsequent hit LPs – a deep effort that combined walloping intensity with a far flung blend classical element, proggy changes and bluesy rock! Deep Purple moved on to a much more mainstream ready groove in the early 70s, but this is a chance to hear them at their early, most adventurous best. Titles include "Chasing Shadows", "Blind", "Lalena", "Fault Line", "The Painter", "Why Didn't Rosemary?", "Bird Has Flown" and "April". LP, Vinyl record album
(Later US pressing, with silver labels and Virtue stamp. This copy was sealed, but opened to determine pressing, and remains unplayed in shrink.)

✨✧ Purple ImagePurple Image ... LP
Tidal Waves, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A key album in the post-Hendrix tradition of funky black rock – and the only album ever recorded by Cleveland's Purple Image! The approach here follows nicely in the same territory worked by Funkadelic and Fugi in the early days – a heady, fuzzed-up blend of trippy guitars, heavy rhythms, and some nice sweeter soul touches – all in a mode that swings nicely between really messed-up tunes, and others with a lighter, more soul-based approach. Side two of the record is dominated by the great jamming track "Marching to a Different Drummer" – easily enough to rival anything on Funkadelic's Free Your Mind album – and other cuts include "Living In the Ghetto", "Why", "Lady", and "We Got To Pull Together". Purple/Cherry Red (UK), 1974. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $42.99
Roger Glover steps aside from Deep Purple – and delivers one of his strangest records of the 70s – an oddly glammy, hard rock interpretation of material from the children's book of the same name! The set actually scored a surprising hit with the very catchy "Love Is All" – which features Ronnie James Dio on vocals – and the set features Dio singing on a few other cuts, "Sitting In A Dream" and "Homeward" – then features Glover working with other singers who include Jimmy Helms on "Waiting", Eddie Hardin on "Sir Maximus Mouse", Tony Ashton on "Together Again", and Glenn Hughes on "Get Ready". Glover produced – and the whole thing is way cooler than you might expect! 2LP version features great bonus material – a full side of demos and alternate mixes of tracks from the record, plus the single-only "Little Chalk Blue" – and a second side that features selections from the Roger Glover Butterfly Ball radio special in 1974! ✨✧ Alexander O'NealHearsay (180 gram purple vinyl pressing) ... LP
Tabu (UK), 1987. New Copy (reissue)... About October 20, 2019
One of the crowning achievements of Alexander O'Neal – a set that uses cool little intro tracks to help structure the standout songs on the set – giving the whole thing a much more well-conceived approach than other mainstream soul albums of the time! Some of the cuts draw from O'Neal's own life and experience, and that feel is definitely augmented by the spontaneous, conversational feel of the intros and links – a really nice contrast to the wonderfully tight R&B production from the superteam of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis! Of course, lots of these tracks also struck big as singles for Alexander – proof that the cuts are more than strong enough to stand on their own – yet taken over the course of the whole album, with all the extra bits, the whole thing really sounds great. Titles include "Hearsay", "The Lovers", "Fake", "Criticize", "Crying Overtime", and "Sunshine". LP, Vinyl record album

The classic Halloween novelty record! You might know the classic title cut – one of those tunes that never gets old, and which really blows away all the countless imitators over the years – but there's lots more here to discover, all in Bobby Pickett's cool mix of monster movie vocals and garagey rock and roll! Production is by the legendary Gary Paxton – who almost gives a Kim Fowley twist to some numbers – and in addition to "Monster Mash", titles include "Graveyard Shift", "Blood Bank Blues", "Monster Motion", "Bella's Bash" or the hair raising "Rabian The Fiendage Idol". We can't imagine anyone being able to convince us that 2 better singles than "Little Red Corvette" and "1999" came out of the 80s, and both of those are on here – enough said. Warner, Early 80s. New Copy 2LP & CD ... $53.99 59.98
A fantastic collection of unreleased material from Prince – not spare demos or home recordings, or studio snippets either – but instead some fully-formed songs that come right from the glory days of the singer's career! Almost all the material here is from the early 80s – and most tracks were later recorded by other artists in the Prince spectrum – including The Time, Apollonia 6, Mazarti, The Family, Jill Jones, and Sheila E – but are done here by the man himself, with all of the slinky, funky qualities that he brought to his own music at the time – qualities that are especially well-noted on some of the other cuts that were recorded by The Bangles and Kenny Rogers – which really feel different in the hands of Prince. Titles include "Love Thy Will Be Done", "Nothing Compares 2 U", "Baby You're A Trip", "Manic Monday", "Jungle Love", "Sex Shooter", "Noon Rendezvous", "Make Up", "The Glamorous Life", "Holly Rock", "You're My Love", "100 MPH", "Dear Michaelangelo", "Wouldn't You Love To Love Me", and "Gigolos Get Lonely Too". Beautiful package – comes in an LP-size hardcover book, with 24 pages of notes, handwritten lyrics, and photos – and a bonus CD too! LP, Vinyl record album

Essential stuff, whether you're a fan of roots reggae, Jamaican soul or the otherworldly antics of the Upsetter! Though you might not know it from some of the bitter rebukes Scratch later laid to wax against him, Romeo was clearly his favorite son when it came to vocalists, and got the prodigal treatment when it came to the choice of rhythms to voice. A monumental effort on both their parts, this album continues to amaze us with every spin, Romeo's soulful inflections matched perfectly to the dark, swampy Black Ark grooves. Independent soul supernova YahZarah's first proper full length in 7 years – she teased us with a very promising EP and some guest singing with Foreign Exchange in the interim – finally bringing us The Ballad Of Purple Saint James in 2010, a record that's doubtlessly going down as one of our favorite modern soul albums of the year! Speaking of Foreign Exchange, she's working here with Nicolay and Phonte as producers and it's a perfect fit, elevating the games of all involved. It's this excellent meld of classic and cosmic influences that they just nail, the songs are great, and YahZarah's voice has never sounded more beautiful. Laidback numbers and straight up anthems, it's all excellent. We can't recommend this one any higher, folks. Congrats to YahZarah & team Foreign Exchange for raising the bar! These guys really take the analog in their name seriously – as the sound here is awash in vintage funk elements, all played live, and given some great direction in the studio from Eddie Roberts of the New Mastersounds! The group's a larger ensemble than most funk combos – thanks to a strong horn section – but they manage to make everything come down right on the money, with a groove that's sharp, but nice and warm too! Vocals on some tracks are by Devon Parker and Ashley Niven Fairman – but the group also have their instrumental chops very firmly in place. RPM (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest groups going on the New Zealand scene of the late 60s – killer at covers, and even stronger with their own compositions too! There's a definite Brit invasion feel to the material, especially at the start – as you might guess from the overall look of the package – but like some of the best acts from farther-flung scenes of the 60s, these guys really start to drop some of their copycat modes ones they get moving forward enough to find their own sound. The basslines get bolder, the vocals nastier, and the overall groove hits this tight, garagey fire that really has the quintet taking off – and the CD features great notes, and a total of 25 titles that include "Painter Man", "I Feel God", "So Much In Love With You", "I'll Make You Happy", "Shakin Up Some Soul", "Everybody's Girl", "Coloured Flowers", "Fantasy", "Let's Think Of Something", and "My Son John". ✨✧ Barry GrayUFO – The Original Television Series Soundtrack Music (purple vinyl pressing) ... LP
Silva Screen (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An incredible collection of space age soundtrack music – tunes taken from the British TV show UFO, scored by Barry Gray, who'd also done work for Thunderbirds! The style here is a mix of the mod dramatic modes used by Gray in his more famous work, and some of the 60s future/sci fi styles that show up in the work of Peter Thomas at the time – an amazingly inventive use of organ, woodwinds, and other more traditional instrumentation – to create eerie sounds and themes that almost sound electronic! There's a few nice grooves on the set, but the real charm is in the overall soundtrack work – a beautiful retro/future vision that's finally seeing the light of day in this limited vinyl-only collection! Titles include "ESP", "Flasback", "SHADO", "Taken", "Crash Landing/Dreambox", "Who Are You/John's Death", "UFO Main Titles", and "The Affair". LP, Vinyl record album

"You & Me" is a tremendous little tune – very spare and sweet, with a completely catchy hook – all put together with a roughness that reminds us of the earliest days of doo wop recording, even though the track is a soul tune all the way through! The unearthed cut first appeared on Numero's Prix label compilation – and in the film Blue Valentine – and it's backed here by the never-heard "You Are Giving Me Some Other Love" – an equally great mellow soul tune, with wonderful slow-moving harmonies! 7-inch, Vinyl record

One of the most amazing jazz vocalists of our generation returns here with an incredible group – a majestic combo to match all the spiritual inclinations in his music – with work from Kamasi Washington on tenor, Mark De Clive-Lowe on piano, Miguel Atwood Ferguson on viola, and both Carlos Nino and Derf Reklaw on percussion! Dwight Trible on his own is already more than enough to get us to run out and buy a record – but here, the combination of his unique voice with these musicians makes for an album that's an instant masterpiece – and one that even has lots of new colors and styles compared to some of Dwight's previous work! Songs include numbers by older west coast spiritual jazz heavyweights – like Horace Tapscott, Linda Hill, Nate Morgan, James Leary, and Jesse Sharps – mixed with some of Trible's own songs, and versions of work by Carmen Lundy, Oscar Brown Jr, and Donny Hathaway. From top to bottom, start to stop, the album's a treasure – with tracks that include "It's All About Love", "Thank You Master", "Song For My Mother", "Brother Where Are You", "Some Other Time", "These Things You Are To Me", "Desert Fairy Princess", and "Mothership". A very nice set of electric guitar groovers from a young Harvey Mandel! The record has less of the trippy dippy feel of Harvey's later albums – and instead has some nice tight jazzy arrangements with his soulful guitar soloing over the top. There's a lot going on stylistically here without it ever going too far all over the map, getting off to a great start with the psych-blues-jazz groove of the title track, followed by a nice cover of Nat Adderley's "Jive Samba", and stays on a high level from there. and Abe "Voco" Kesh produced the record and it features horn & string arrangements by Shorty Rogers. Prestige, Mid 50s. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Ahhhh . . . The Jam Session years of Gene Ammons! This album was one of a number that Jug cut for Prestige during the mid 50s, all excellent examples of how perfectly the label's "blowing session" style could work when it wanted to. The set takes Ammons' tenor, and groups it with an all-star cast that includes Art Farmer and Donald Byrd on trumpets, Jackie McLean on alto, Mal Waldron on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. All the horn players are given free reign to solo – and as most of the tracks go on and on and on, they really get room to open up, blowing with the kind of competitive creativity you'd hear in a live set at the same time. Includes three long tracks: "Not Really The Blues", "Jammin With Gene", and "We'll Be Together Again". LP, Vinyl record album

Take these guys out of the Ashkan, because they can really rock their arses off! Ashkan have a heady, bass-y groove that rocks out with the power of early Deep Purple at their best – stretching out over longish tunes that have a freewheeling quality that's clearly driven by its own demons, and which falls together beautifully on this album – making an instant sort of sense, and coming across with an energy that should have made this one a classic. Guitarist Bob Weston has some incredibly dark tones on the record, matched nicely by bluesy vocals of Steve Bailey – and propelled to the depths by some massive bass by Ron Bending. Titles include "Practically Never Happens", "Stop", "Going Home", "Take These Chains", and "Darkness". LP, Vinyl record album

Bessie Smith by LaVern Baker – a great blend of modes that really comes off great! Instead of sounding like a throwback blues album, the set comes across with a nice degree of contemporary class – thanks in part to a jazzy presentation that's a bit different than some of Baker's other music of the time – and which sports reeds from Sahib Shihab, tenor from Paul Quinichette, trumpet from Buck Clayton, and trombone from Jimmy Cleveland! Baker's voice is in fine form in this comfortable setting – and really works magic with tracks that include "After You've Gone", "Preaching The Blues", "Empty Bed Blues", "Back Water Blues", and "Gimme A Pigfoot". Art Blakey/Modern Jazz QuartetArt Blakey's Jazz Messengers With Thelonious Monk/Blues At Carnegie Hall ... CD
Collectables, 1958/1967. Used ... $7.99
An unlikely pairing of albums, but another nice 2-fer of classic Atlantic sides. The Jazz Messengers album is a great one – and features the firey hardbop of Blakey's late 50's Messengers (with Johnny Griffin and Bill Hardman) meeting the modernist piano playing of Monk, who was really hitting his stride at this point on his own Riverside recordings. The session's an interesting one, and if it lacks the groove of the usual Blakey album, Monk more than makes up for any lack of soulfulness by throwing in some nice complicated piano lines. We still prefer Bobby Timmons to Monk with Blakey – but the album's worth having, and includes nice Monk tracks like "Evidence", "Blue Monk", "I Mean You", and "Purple Shades". The MJQ session's a live one, and features the usual tightly arranged chamber jazz approach. Tracks on that one include "Bag's Groove", "Blues Milanese", "Pyramid", and "The Cylinder". CD

Atco, 1967. Very Good+ ... $11.99
Sonny without Cher – and sounding pretty darn amazing! The album's a really unique solo effort from the man on the LA scene – and as you might guess from the title, one that's a lot more cerebral than the jangly pop he was better known for at the time – almost psychedelic at times, with some really "right on" lyrics that kind of take off where "The Beat Goes On" ended – offering up some commentary on the times, with tripped-out arrangements that definitely fit the flavor of the lyrics! The leadoff track – "I Just Sit There" – is a stunning twelve minutes long – and the whole album hangs together line a suite of similarly-themed tunes – with other titles that include "I Just Told My Girl To Go Away", "I Would Marry You Today", "My Best Friend's Girl Is Out Of Sight", and the ultra-groovy drug song "Pammie's On A Bummer". Bobby CallenderRainbow ... LP
MGM, 1968. Very Good ... $24.99
A weird one. The album's sort of a trippy mix of psychedlia, soul, and jazziness – with production by Alan Lorber in a similar style to other projects of his from the same time (like the Lotus Palace album on Verve.) Bobby Callender sings in a style that's infused with a sense of knowledge and righteousness, but which is also a bit more devoid of soul than you'd expect from the cool cover of the album. Still, he's got some nice musicians backing him up, and a blend of instruments that includes organ, funky drums, and even sitar – so the overall sound's pretty cool. Titles include "Rainbow", "Symphonic Pictures", "A Man", "Mother Superior", and "Purple". LP, Vinyl record album

Decca/Third Man, Early 60s. New Copy 3LP ... On November 29, 2019
Classic work from Patsy Cline – a complete collection of her legendary work for Decca Records from the early 60s – a set that's sadly complete in the space of just 3LPs, because of Cline's untimely early death! But that tragedy aside, the music is amazing – and perhaps we could even say that the brevity of the package makes it that much more appealing – a really sharp focus on Patsy's genius, laid out in the short space of 51 songs – all recorded at a time when Decca Records could really do country music right, with a poise and clarity that Cline never could have reached a few short years before. Titles include a wonderful mix of hits and lesser-known gems – and the beautiful package features a good history of Patsy's career during this time, plus full notes on each recording session too. Titles include "Shoes", "I Fall To Pieces", "San Antonio Rose", "Lonely Street", "Anytime", "Half As Much", "You're Stronger Than Me", "South Of The Border", "Crazy", "Who Can I Count On", "Foolin Around", "Your Kinda Love", "Why Can't He Be You", "I Can't Help It", "You're Stronger Than Me", "You Were Only Foolin", Always", "Love Letters In The Sand", "Blue Moon Of Kentucky", and "Crazy Arms". Wonderful wonderful wonderful work from the legendary John Coltrane – and even though it's probably one of his best-selling albums of all time, it's still a treasure – and has an essential place in just about any jazz collection! We've heard the original title version of "My Favorite Things" a million times – but it still blows our mind the way Coltrane hits this incredibly soulful modal groove, twisting and turning on soprano sax, always keeping things interesting, so that we're surprised that the cut's 13 minutes have gone by so quickly! The rest of the record's equally great – and the 3 other long cuts are "Everytime We Say Goodbye", "Summertime" and "But Not for Me". As great today as when it was cut, and still one of Coltrane's most revelatory albums! With McCoy Tyner on piano, Steve Davis on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. LP, Vinyl record album

DriftersI'll Take You Where The Music's Playing ... LP
Atlantic, 1965. Very Good+ ... $14.99
The Drifters' last full album for Atlantic Records – and a rock-solid set that may well be one of their best for the label in the 60s! The album's heavy on those lightly loping tunes that the group virtually invented a few years before – that slightly-sweetened approach to soul that became known as the uptown sound and which still had The Drifters as one of its key proponents at the time of this set. Production is by the great Bert Berns, who really knows how to balance all elements perfectly – and many of the lead vocals are by Johnny Moore, whose crackling vocals bring in a nice sense of feeling, even when the tunes are pretty darn catchy. But possibly the best thing about the record is the songs – as they're mostly pretty fresh tracks that move past some of the overplayed Drifters hits – but which still resonate with similar themes about live and life in the big city. Titles include "I'll Take You Where The Music's Playing", "I've Got Sand In My Shoes", "At The Club", "He's Just A Playboy", "Follow Me", "Far From The Maddening Crowd", and "Come On Over To My Place". Rick James makes the move away from Motown here – heading over to Warner/Reprise, in the Prince side of the spectrum – along with a cover image that has him wearing a paisley costume on top of a purple background – in a way that could well make the buyer think that Rick's working with Prince! But despite these Prince-like trappings (which also include some more Purple Rain-ish costumes on the inside cover), Rick's still writing, producing, and arranging himself – hitting a groove that clearly inspired by the success of his Paisley Park competition, but which is also kind of a natural extension of the Rick James funk sound into the end of the 80s. Roxanne Shante and Big Daddy Kane make some guest appearances on the album – and titles include "Loosey's Rap", "Hypnotize", "I Believe In U", "In The Girl's Room", "Sherry Baby", "Love's Fire", "Wonderful", "So Tight", and "Sexual Luv Affair". The album's filled with lots of King's sharp-edged guitar lines – searing with a bit more soul than your usual bluesman, possibly in part because the backing group's so tight! At times, there's almost a bit of funk in the mix – given that the rhythm section romps it up pretty strongly – and the record stands nicely apart from some of the blues cliches that were creeping into the mix at the time. King Curtis brings the sound of Memphis up to the New York studios of Atlantic Records – working here in an all-instrumental mode that serves up his own sax-heavy takes on the big 60s hits of Stax Records! The album's maybe a bit telling – given the way that a year later, Atlantic took most what Stax had built themselves – but it also illustrates the strong power the southern scene had on the style of New York soul at the time – as the album's easily one of the most hard-hitting full length sets from Curtis – done with much deeper vibes overall, and less of the ballads that showed up on some of his previous records. Prestige, 1957/1961. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $16.99
2 LP set originally released as Eastern Sounds and The Sounds Of Yusef Lateef. On The first LP, Lateef works in that wonderful mixture of hardbop, soul jazz, and Eastern stylings that he brought to all of his best early sessions as a leader. Lateef himself is playing tenor, flute, and oboe – which he uses to craft these eerie snake charmer lines that work perfectly with the modal grooves of the tracks. The rest of the group features pianist Barry Harris, drummer Lex Humphries, and bassist Ernie Farrow, who also plays a strange instrument called a rabat. Titles include "Plum Blossom", "Purple Flower", "Three Faces Of Balal", and "Chinq Miau". The second LP is a beautifully haunting set that marked his move to Prestige, and a sophistication of the Eastern-tinged jazz style that he developed during his years with Savoy. The tracks on here feature Yusef playing tenor, flute, and argol – with backing by a group of Detroit musicians that includes Hugh Lawson, Wilbur Harden, and Oliver Jackson, all frequent bandmates of Lateef. The tracks have a beautiful quality to them that mixes soulful jazz playing with Eastern approaches to arrangements. Titles include "Meditation", "Love & Humor", and "Buckingham". A very unusual little record, cut at the height of fame for the team of Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller! The session's a rare jazz one from the duo – put together to feature different versions of tunes they'd been penning for acts on Atlantic and some of the other big labels of the late 50s. Work here is all done in a mode that's a bit like the Ray Charles jazz style of the time – big band, but with plenty of R&B influences – and searing horn work from a batch of players who include Al Grey, Frank Foster, Ernie Royal, Thad Jones, Frank Rehak, and Benny Powell. Lieber & Stoller don't play on the record, but direct the tunes with the mentioned flair – although in a way that's a bit looser than their usual work. Lenoir's tone is a pitch or two up from most of his contemporaries – not as gritty and deep, and with inflections that almost point the way towards soul singers in the generation to come. The album's a key collaboration with Detroit producer Ollie McLaughlin – who keeps things in a different mode from the usual Motor City style – balancing out the rhythms a bit more, going for some great mellow and midtempo numbers that really help unlock the best qualities in Barbara's amazing voice! She's got a style that's high, yet never "little girl" – as might be said of some of her contemporaries – and this approach is heard to great effect on the album's two classics "Baby I'm Yours" and "Hello Stranger". And amidst this all, Morgen's actually got some compelling ideas in his songwriting – a sense of brightness that sparkles out amidst the void. Titles include "Eternity In Between", "Purple", "Love", "She's The Nitetime", and "Welcome To The Void". CD also include 2 bonus tracks "Of Dreams (single version)" and "She's The Nitetime (single version)". CD

✨✧ Shuggie OtisFreedom Flight (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Epic, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
The second album from Shuggie Otis – a wild and wooly batch of grooves that really stretches out the sound from the first! Shuggie's got much more of a hand in the arrangements here – and the tunes are grooving in a sweet blend of funk, rock, and soul – really drenched in the best cross-cultural influences going down on the west coast scene of the time – a kind of color-blind quest for the groove that comes across with a really righteous power! Tracks include the original version of "Strawberry Letter 23" – plus the cuts "Ice Cold Daydream", "Freedom Flight", "Sweet Thang", "Purple", and "Me & My Woman". LP, Vinyl record album

Wilson PickettWicked Pickett ... LP
Atlantic, 1966. Very Good- ... $14.99
A breakout record that forever put Wilson Pickett at the top of the heap for mainstream 60s soul – thanks to the oft-covered, endlessly played "Mustang Sally" single that leads off the set! And although the groove established by that track helped Pickett establish an audience on both sides of the fence, the full album itself is much deeper stuff – a searing album of southern-styled soul recorded with some great Muscle Shoals production – Rick Hall and Tom Dowd at the helm – and key session players who include Charlie Chalmers, Chips Moman, Tommy Cogbill, Spooner Oldham, and Roger Hawkins – all of whom help give the record the intimate, earthy feeling that helped Pickett step out with a stronger sound than earlier recordings. (And in fact, this album's perhaps a key pre-Aretha Franklin example of the way that Atlantic's vision could majestically change the sound of an already-known soul artist – bringing them far deeper than ever before.) Titles include "Mustang Sally", "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love", "Nothing You Can Do", "Three Time Loser", "Sunny", "She Ain't Gonna Do Right", "Knock On Wood", "Time Is On My Side", and "You Left The Water Running". ✨✧ PrinceAround The World In A Day ... LP
Paisley Park, 1985. Very Good Gatefold ... $9.99
A mad bit of soul psychedelia from Prince – a record that sounds better and better over the years, and which stands out from most of his 80s work thanks to some really unique production and songwriting! After Purple Rain, Prince did anything but wince in the face of living up to such a massive crossover smash – and if Around The World didn't move nearly as many units, it stands pretty tall these days. A mix of Revolution pop funk & soul, with a more swirling, self consciously psychedelic pop. Titles include the hit "Raspberry Beret", "Paisley Park" (with melody so strong, no wonder Prince held onto the name for other ventures) plus "Around The World In A Day", "America", "Temptation", "Pop Life", and "Condition Of The Heart". Warner, 1983. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
A fantastic musical gift from beyond – early 80s recordings by Prince, and the sort of work that might have been a huge revelation if it were issued during his too-short career! As the title implies, the set just features the man himself at the piano – singing and playing with a very intimate vibe – completely unlike any of his 80s material at all, even though some of the songs are the same! Prince is fantastic at the keys – really compelling and inspirational – with a sense of feeling that opens up some of his jazz chops in a way we never would have expected – and which is then matched by a more freewheeling sense of vocalization – with these fantastic inflections that leave us breathless, but again in a completely different way than his other music. The first half of the set features Prince flowing through songs that include "17 Days", "Purple Rain", "Mary Don't You Weep", "A Case Of You", "International Lover", "Wednesday", and "Strange Relationship" – and the second half features the songs "Why The Butterflies" and "Cold Coffee & Cocaine". Sun RaGreat Lost Sun Ra Albums – Cymbals & Crystal Spears ... CD
Evidence, 1973. Used 2 CDs ... $11.99
2CDs worth of previously unissued material! Both records – Cymbals and Crystal Spears – were originally due to be released on Impulse during the same stretch that the label was repackaging older Saturn albums, but were never issued because of all the messed up relations that quickly terminated what should have been a much longer deal. (Some of this is nicely outlined in the good set of notes that go with the set.) Cymbals features 3 tracks that did appear on a Saturn album called Deep Purple, plus 2 titles that were never issued before – and the set features Ra on organ Rocksichord, vibes, and organ – playing very out and raucously with a group that includes Danny Davis, John Gilmore, and Akh Tal Ebah. Crystal Spears is a lot more introspective, and takes us back to earlier years of the Arkestra. Ra's on organ, marimba, mini moog, and vibes – and the rest of the group's playing a variety of horns and percussion. Tracks include "Crystal Spears", "Sunrise In The Western Sky", "The Embassy Of The Living God", "Thoughts Under A Dark Blue Light", and "The Mystery Of Two". CD

A wicked batch of Latin groovers from Willie Rosario – one that takes all the energy of his rare indie sides from the 60s, and fuses it with the tight approach to Latin Soul being hipped up by Atlantic at the time! The whole thing's great, and has a vibe that's very lively overall – with tracks that run the gamut from mambo jazz to boogaloo – and titles that include "Mi Chamaco", "Viento En Popa", "Cuca La Loca", "Light & Sweet", "Stop & Go", and "Watusi Boogaloo". Raymond ScottRaymond Scott Conducts The Rock N Roll Symphony ... LP
Everest, 1958. Near Mint- ... $4.99
An odd one for Raymond Scott – and a sweet one, too! First, this "rock n roll symphony" isn't really rock, so much as it is a set of standards and 50s pop instrumentals – mostly non-rock – all performed in a mellow easy style. Second, even though Scott's at the head of the group, the sound is pretty straightforward – quite nice for 50s instrumental work, but not nearly as crazy as some of Scott's more groundbreaking albums. One treasure of the album, though (and this is perhaps the "rock" element), is that it includes loads of tenor solos by Sam Taylor – snaking through the mist with a good soulful quality. Titles that include "Stardust", "True Love", "All The Things You Are", "How High The Moon", "Summertime", "Deep Purple", "La Cumparsita", "Amor" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Percy SledgePercy Sledge Way ... LP
Atlantic, 1967. Near Mint- ... $39.99
In case you're not hip, the Percy Sledge Way is a deeply soulful one – rooted in the best 60s southern soul traditions, and carried off to perfection on this near-lost Atlantic set! The album's better even than Percy's debut for the label – recorded by Quin Ivy at his legendary Quinvy studios – with session players that include Muscle Shoals legends Spooner Oldham, Roger Hawkins, and Jimmy Johnson. The style is prime Muscle Shoals at its best – pure, simple, and uncomplicated – served up in a full sound that features backing vocals on a number of tracks, and a great set list that includes the tracks "Dark End Of The Street", "I Had A Talk With My Woman", "My Special Prayer", "Drown In My Own Tears", "You Don't Miss Your Water", and "What Am I Living For" – all redone nicely by Percy. Johnny Hammond SmithHere It Tis ... LP
Prestige, 1970. Very Good+ ... $24.99
One of the few Johnny Hammond Smith albums to get really funky during his years with Prestige – a record cut in that cusp of the 70s Prestige funk mode with longer tracks than usual, and a lean, mean electric groove! Bernard Purdie's on drums, playing with a feel that's nicely loose, and which brings in some more complicated rhythms than the usual Idris Muhammad break approach from this time. Other players include James Clark on guitar, Houston Person on tenor, and Jimmy Lewis on Fender bass – bringing a strong rolling bottom groove to the set. Tracks have an open-ended gliding groove, like some of Charles Earland's work for the label – and titles include "Here It Tis", "The Nubs", "Gina D", and "You Made Me So Very Happy". An unreleased set of solo performances from trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith – one that we'd rank right up there with his most adventurous work of the 70s! Smith comes across wonderfully on the record – full of soul and imagination, and easily as impressive on his solo instruments as scenemate Roscoe Mitchell could be in a similar setting – always moving around with thoughtful shifts in timing and purpose, in ways that always make the whole performance feel very organic, especially as Smith moves between other instruments that include flute, percussion, gongs, and steelophone. Titles include "Jupiter's Astro Waves", "Blue Green Gardens Of The Indigenous People", and "Pan Sonic Fire Rhythms/Red Chrysanthemums/Dark Purple Night On Crater Lake With A Clear View Of Saturn's Rings & Moons". Spotnicks/Russ Garcia/Ron GoodwinOut Of This World (Music In Orbit/Fantastica) ... CD
El (UK), Mid 50s. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
Space age pop galore – from a trio of very groovy sources! The Spotnicks start out the set with three cool guitar instrumentals – "Telstar", "Moonshot", and "Rocket Man" – done in their great blend of Ventures guitar modes and offbeat Joe Meek production styles – with a sound that's years ahead of its time! Next is the excellent album Out Of This World – from Brit arranger Ron Goodwin, with production by the legendary George Martin! The album was billed as Music In Orbit here in the US – and is a wonderful album of space-age easy listening! The album features no electronics, but Goodwin's use of soaring strings is somewhere between the Fantastic Planet soundtrack and some of the later moogy albums in the 60s. Scoring is richly sophisticated, with a complicated approach to the material that would befit a high-end 50s sci-fi soundtrack – made even better by the excellent cover, which features a beautiful purple painting of a rocket blasting off of a planet in space. The whole thing's perhaps a bit more romantic than spooky, but the mood changes nicely from track to track to keep things fresh. Titles include "The Moon", "The Venus Waltz", "Mercury Gets The Message", "The Sun", "Jumping Jupiter", and "Martians On Parade". Last up is Russ Garcia's Fantastica – one of the space-age bachelor pad electronic classics! Russ Garcia was mostly a jazz arranger in his day – but he does a good job of scoring some moody sci-fi tracks for this set – mixing full orchestrations with some great electronics handled by Ted Keep, all in a format that replicates a journey through the universe – with stops at lots of unusual galaxies along the way! The album's got a great mix of complicated strings and woodwinds, which offset the spooky electronics nicely – and although playful, the record also represents some of Garcia's most serious scoring on record. Titles include "Into Space", "Nova", "Monster's Of Jupiter", "Red Sands Of Mars", and "Moon Rise". CD

Edwin Starr25 Miles ... LP
Gordy, 1969. Very Good ... $11.99
Socking soul, and a key album in the career of Detroit powerhouse Edwin Starr – one that had him stepping forth with a proud, loud groove all the way through! Starr's work was always a bit harder than the regular Motown bag – no doubts because of his more indie soul roots – and on this set, Edwin comes clean with a punched-up style that's heard to famous effect on the anthemic title hit "25 Miles", and which is nicely followed up by a great batch of tracks that includes "Gonna Keep on Tryin", "You Beat Me To The Punch", "Soul City", "Strugglin' Man", "Mighty Good Lovin", and "Backyard Lovin Man".
