Conference Call (Ullman/Stevens/Fonda/Ulrich)Prism ... CD
Not Two (Poland), 2016. New Copy Gatefold ... $9.99
Bold work from a group of improvisers who really know each others' strengths – maybe no surprise, as most of them have been playing together in this lineup for years – Joe Fonda on bass, Gebhard Ullman on tenor and bass clarinet, and Michael Jefry Stevens on piano – joined by relative newcomer Dieter Ulrich on drums! Ulrich fits right into the sound perfectly – bursting boldly when the others do, hanging back with more tentative sonic energy at other points – always balanced with the same sort of understanding that makes the group work so well together, as they explode out from song ideas by each of the individual members. Titles include "The Bee", "Zeit Lupe", "Sal's Song", "Listen To Dr Cornel West", "Prism", and "Variations On A Master Plan (part 2)". CD

KennelmusFolkstone Prism ... CD
Modern Harmonic, 1971. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A really great, really obscure album from the Phoenix scene at the start of the 70s – one of those underground records that's always touted by deep psych collectors – but a set that also has a lot more going on as well! Kennelmus aren't just some tripped-out guys exploring the range of their guitar skills in the studio – as there's a much more expansive, almost cinematic quality to this record – almost as if all the late 50s Arizona studio experiments had blossomed out through a whole inspiration through the 60s – to come up with this incredible blend of eerie guitar parts, subtle sonic elements, and occasional moody vocals – very out of time, and almost more a first chapter to some of the psych explorations of the 80s Brit scene. Titles include "The Raven", "Dancing Doris", "Black Sunshine", "Think For Yourself", "The Bug The Goat & The Hearse", "Shapes Of Sleep", "Mother Of My Children", "Sylvan shores", and "Goodbye Pamela Ann". ✨✧ Joanne BrackeenPrism (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Choice/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Joanne Brackeen's at the top of her game here – working in a unique set of duets with bassist Eddie Gomez – at a level that matches the fire and fury of any of her work with a larger group! Brackeen's got this tremendous command of the keyboard right from the start – a wide sweep that has the notes cascading wonderfully – in rich melodies with a very deep sound, but still lots of sharp edges, and this sense of freedom that makes you think she's always just about to go outside – before pulling it back a bit. Gomez is sublime, as always – and his bass work adapts perfectly to each individual moment – stating itself strongly, but never in a way that's gimmicky at all – and always balanced between a sense of melody and timekeeping too. Titles include "Lost Or Found", "International Festival", "Evanescent", "If You Dare", and "Prism". CD features three bonus tracks – alternate takes of "International Festival" and "Habitat". CD

MatadorsMatadors (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Supraphon/Sony (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... $32.99
Czech rock from the end of the 60s – played by a groovy group with strong beat-heavy tendencies! Although they hail from behind the iron curtain, The Matadors sing in English – working with instrumentation that's heavy on the Hammond, and clearly influenced by mod work from the UK a few years before – especially given that there's a bit of a subcurrent of 60s soul than runs through some of these tunes! There's a near-perfect British sound going on here – but one that has some slightly odd twists and turns too – like seeing the Brit beat group years through a strange sort of prism, one that further abstracts their own interpretation of American musical influences. Titles include "Bad Bad Bird"," My Girl", "Get Down From The Tree", "Shotgun", "You'll Be Mine", "I Just Hope", and "Hate Everything Except Of Hatter". CD features four more bonus tracks too! CD

Rob Mazurek Exploding Star OrchestraDimensional Stardust ... LP
International Anthem/Nonesuch, 2020. New Copy Gatefold ... $23.99 24.98
One of the most ambitious albums ever from Rob Mazurek – and a set that really continues the legacy of community building and world healing that's become such an important part of his music! Rob's a player who was great at the start – a hell of a trumpeter, and a great experimentalist with electronics – but in recent years, he's matured to become a real messenger for the farther, future reaches of jazz – with an energy that makes a collaborative project like this come off in a way that might never have occurred in the hands of any other musician! Mazurek is at the head – director, composer, arranger, and instrumentalist too – and the large lineup is filled with heavyweights from the Chicago scene that Rob helped shape over the past few decades – plus others as well – players who include Damon Locks on voice and electronics, Nicole Mitchell on flutes, Tomeka Reid on cello, Joel Ross on vibes, Jaimi Branch on trumpet, Jeff Parker on guitar, Ingebrigit Haker Flate on bass, and Chad Taylor, John Herndon, and Mikel Patrick Avery on a variety of drums and percussion. There's a richness here that tops other Exploding Star Orchestra performances – and more of a focus, too – so that the whole thing comes together as even more than the sum of its mighty parts, as one of the best International Anthem releases to date. Titles include "Galaxy 1000", "Parable Of Inclusion", "Autumn Pleiades", "Minerals Bionic Stereo", "Dimensional Stardust", "Abstract Dark Energy", and "The Careening Prism Within". OrgoneKillion Floor ... CD
Ubiquity, 2007. Used ... $9.99
A monstrous debut from one of the heaviest acts we've heard in years – LA's Orgone, easily one of the most up-and-coming funky combos around! Although Orgone share a bit with some of the leaner deep funk groups who've cropped up in the past decade or so, they've also got a sound that's a bit more advanced overall – sort of that second-generation approach to funk that hit the scene by the mid 70s, as some of the bigger funk acts like Black Heat or War moved out of the indie scene and really started to hit a wider audience! That doesn't mean that Orgone's commercial at all – because they've got a sound that's still as sharp-edged as any smaller group – but with a lineup that's quite large, they're able to encompass a very wide range of soulful styles – gritty 45 riffing, slinky Chicano-styled grooves, Afro Funk, tighter soul tracks, and lots lots more – all carried off with perfection throughout. The album feels like some lost masterpiece on Fantasy, or possibly some overlooked early 70s major label funk set on WEA or United Artists – and titles include "Who Knows Who", "I Get Lifted", "Funky Nassau", "Lone Ranger", "Prism Break", "Crabby Ali", "Duck & Cover", "Dialed Up", "Said & Done", "Hambone", "It's What You Do", "Do Your Thing", and "Sophisticated Honky". ✨✧ Salah Ragab & The Cairo Jazz BandEgypt Strut (with bonus tracks) (2021 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Strut (UK), 1974. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
Amazing grooves like you've never heard before – the seminal sides by Salah Ragab and his Cairo Jazz Band! As you can probably guess from their name, the ensemble was an Egyptian one – working in an incredible blend of jazz and more traditional Egyptian-styled sounds – a blend that comes across with all the exotic feel of the pyramids at dawn, but which manages to groove like some of the best funky work from America at the time! Instrumentation includes lot of percussion, heavy piano and horns, and some especially great flute on most tracks – all coming together with a sound that's unlike anything else we've heard before. This collection is the first time that this music has been brought together officially, all with the kind of top-shelf production and packaging we've come to expect from the Art Yard label! The is the definitive edition of the 1974 album – with the original record on LP1, and eight more bonus tracks from related sessions on LP2 – all presented with original artwork, and Prism Music Unit inner sleeves and booklet! Titles include "Egypt Strut", "Ramadan In Space Time", "Dawn", "Neveen", "Oriental Mood", "Kleopatra", "Mervat", "Latino In Cairo", "Tribute To Sun Ra", "Khan El Khaleely", "The Crossing (Oubour)", "Calling You", "Black Butterfly", "Upper Egypt", "A Farewell Theme" and "Kleopatra (alternate take)". VariousLet's A Go Go! – Singapore & Southeast Asian Pop 1964 to 1969 ... CD
Silver Tortoise, Mid 60s. Used ... $24.99
Weird and wonderful work from the Southeast Asian scene of the 60s – very cool grooves that show a heavy influence from American rockers of the time! The lyrics here are often sung in English, and the music is filled with the same sort of jangly guitars, driving drums, and mod-styled rhythms you'd find in US rock and roll from the mid 60s – but the overall sound is quite unusual, too – given the Asian origin of all these cuts! It's almost like hearing the 60s through some sort of odd prism that distorts the familiar – which makes for a fascinating set of tracks you'll be hard pressed to find elsewhere! Titles include "One To Nine Walkin" by Patrina, "Sudi Sudi Kah Dikau" by Ismail Haron & The Guys, "Swim Swim Swim" by The Spacemen, "Lonely Heart" by Rita Chao, "Flamingo" by The Bees, "Mr Twister" by The Crescendos, "The Second Spring" by Hai Fei, and "Just Because" by The Dee Tee's. ✨✧ Joshua Abrams & Natural Information SocietyMandatory Reality ... CD
Eremite, 2019. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really fantastic album from bassist Joshua Abrams – a set that may well be his greatest to date – and that's saying a lot, given all the other work he's given us in recent years! The double-length set has Abrams working with this lineup of improvising jazz talents, but in a way that's very rhythmic, and very organic – slow-building songs that almost seem to mix jazz with inspiration from gamelan music, but with very spiritual currents overall – music that builds slowly and flows to the cosmos – almost in a way that reminds us of the seminal "On The Beach" by Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble! Yet Abrams is very much in his own territory here – working with a lineup that features the leader on guimbri, Lisa Alvarado on harmonium and gongs, Mikel Avery on tam-tam and gongs, Ben Boye on electric autoharp and piano, Hamid Drake on tabla and tar, Ben Lamar Gay on cornet, Nick Mazzarella on alto saxophone, and Jason Stein on bass clarinet – with every member of the ensemble also performing on flutes. The sound is incredible – music to build a bridge to the heavens – and titles include "In Memory's Prism", "Finite", "Shadow Conductor", and "Agree". CD

DimlitePrismic Tops ... CD
Now Again, 2010. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
Abstract beats with a depth of global influences from Dimlite – the Swiss beatmaker/producer's debut for the Now Again/Stones Throw – and far reaching effort that covers a lot of aural atmosphere over its running time! Dimlite's work for Sonar Kollectiv was among the most forward looking on the roster, and that unpredictable approach is well served here. Glitchy synth sounds and bubbling electronic errata mix with more earthy rhythms and hazy melodies – with vocals that also give it a more grounded feel in spots, but this is adventurous and unpredictable in all the right ways. Titles include "Kalimba Sewathswamp/Kurt Feelings", "On The Same Picture" featuring vocals by Elan Tamara, "Firevomit (ODN)", "Elbow Flood", "Can't Get Used To Those (Afterlude)" and more. CD features the bonus "Elbow Flood" instrumental. CD

Sun RaSunrise In Different Dimensions ... CD
Hatology (Switzerland), 1980. Used ... $16.99
The "Sunrise" in the title here is especially well-placed – because this live performance by Sun Ra has a beautifully glowing quality – one that unfolds musically as the set rolls on, moving through a day's course of music in different moods and dimensions! Ra initiates the proceedings with some gentler inside piano, but as the set gets moving, the other group members leap into the fray – pushing a tremendous energy into some of Ra's original compositions – then stepping back for a more peaceful, contemplative exploration of older themes in jazz – played in that "across the 20th century" mode that took hold of The Arkestra strongly during this decade. Group members here include Marshall Allen, John Gilmore, Noel Scott, Michael Ray, and Danny Thomas – and the concert is very well recorded, with numbers that include "Cocktails For Two", "Lightnin", "Light From A Hidden Sun", "Pin Points Of Spiral Prisms", "Silhouettes Of The Shadow World", "Queer Notions", "Big John's Special", and "A Helio-Hello & Goodbye Too". ✨✧ Sun RaMonorails & Satellites Vols 1 to 3 – Works For Solo Piano (3LP set) ... LP
Saturn/Cosmic Myth, 1966. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic material from the legendary Sun Ra – groundbreaking solo piano material, which shows a completely different side of his genius away from his work with the Arkestra! The package presents all volumes of Ra's seminal sides from 1966 – including a third volume, which has never been released at all – making for the most comprehensive package to ever document this side of his work in a more intimate manner! There's a sensitivity to these tracks that's really amazing – still moments of freedom that reflect Ra's connection to the avant garde of the time – but also echoes of Art Tatum and other stylists who influenced his initial vision in the early days – interwoven with his own sense of cosmic creation, in ways that are similar to his later solo projects – but which didn't often show up in other Saturn material of the time. Some tracks are altered standards, but many others are really great originals – and titles include the unreleased "Soundscapes", "The Eternal Tomorrow", "The Changing Wind", "World Island Festival", "Today Is Not Yesterday", "How Am I To Know", and "Yesterdays" – plus "Caloundronius", "Perspective Prismis Of Is", "Solar Boats", "The Ninth Eye", "Space Towers", "Cognition", "The Galaxy Way", "The Alter Destiny", and "Blue Differentials".
